9 TAMBIÉN les dijo: De cierto os digo que hay algunos de los que están aquí, que no gustarán la muerte hasta que hayan visto el reino de Dios que viene con potencia.
2 Y seis días después tomó Jesús á Pedro, y á Jacobo, y á Juan, y los sacó aparte solos á un monte alto; y fué transfigurado delante de ellos.
3 Y sus vestidos se volvieron resplandecientes, muy blancos, como la nieve; tanto que ningún lavador en la tierra los puede hacer tan blancos.
4 Y les apareció Elías con Moisés, que hablaban con Jesús.
5 Entonces respondiendo Pedro, dice á Jesús: Maestro, bien será que nos quedemos aquí, y hagamos tres pabellones: para ti uno, y para Moisés otro, y para Elías otro;
6 Porque no sabía lo que hablaba; que estaban espantados.
7 Y vino una nube que les hizo sombra, y una voz de la nube, que decía: Este es mi Hijo amado: á él oíd.
8 Y luego, como miraron, no vieron más á nadie consigo, sino á Jesús solo.
9 Y descendiendo ellos del monte, les mandó que á nadie dijesen lo que habían visto, sino cuando el Hijo del hombre hubiese resucitado de los muertos.
10 Y retuvieron la palabra en sí, altercando qué sería aquéllo: Resucitar de los muertos.
11 Y le preguntaron, diciendo: ¿Qué es lo que los escribas dicen, que es necesario que Elías venga antes?
12 Y respondiendo él, les dijo: Elías á la verdad, viniendo antes, restituirá todas las cosas: y como está escrito del Hijo del hombre, que padezca mucho y sea tenido en nada.
13 Empero os digo que Elías ya vino, y le hicieron todo lo que quisieron, como está escrito de él.
14 Y como vino á los discípulos, vió grande compañía alrededor de ellos, y escribas que disputaban con ellos.
15 Y luego toda la gente, viéndole, se espantó, y corriendo á él, le saludaron.
16 Y preguntóles: ¿Qué disputáis con ellos?
17 Y respondiendo uno de la compañía, dijo: Maestro, traje á ti mi hijo, que tiene un espíritu mudo,
18 El cual, donde quiera que le toma, le despedaza; y echa espumarajos, y cruje los dientes, y se va secando: y dije á tus discípulos que le echasen fuera, y no pudieron.
19 Y respondiendo él, les dijo: Oh generación infiel! ¿hasta cuándo estaré con vosotros? ¿hasta cuándo os tengo de sufrir? Traédmele.
20 Y se le trajeron: y como le vió, luego el espíritu le desgarraba; y cayendo en tierra, se revolcaba, echando espumarajos.
21 Y Jesús preguntó á su padre: ¿Cuánto tiempo há que le aconteció esto? Y él dijo: Desde niño:
22 Y muchas veces le echa en el fuego y en aguas, para matarle; mas, si puedes algo, ayúdanos, teniendo misericordia de nosotros.
23 Y Jesús le dijo: Si puedes creer, al que cree todo es posible.
24 Y luego el padre del muchacho dijo clamando: Creo, ayuda mi incredulidad.
25 Y como Jesús vió que la multitud se agolpaba, reprendió al espíritu inmundo, diciéndole: Espíritu mudo y sordo, yo te mando, sal de él, y no entres más en él.
26 Entonces el espíritu clamando y desgarrándole mucho, salió; y él quedó como muerto, de modo que muchos decían: Está muerto.
27 Mas Jesús tomándole de la mano, enderezóle; y se levantó.
28 Y como él entró en casa, sus discípulos le preguntaron aparte: ¿Por qué nosotros no pudimos echarle fuera?
29 Y les dijo: Este género con nada puede salir, sino con oración y ayuno.
30 Y habiendo salido de allí, caminaron por Galilea; y no quería que nadie lo supiese.
31 Porque enseñaba á sus discípulos, y les decía: El Hijo del hombre será entregado en manos de hombres, y le matarán; mas muerto él, resucitará al tercer día.
32 Pero ellos no entendían esta palabra, y tenían miedo de preguntarle.
33 Y llegó á Capernaum; y así que estuvo en casa, les preguntó: ¿Qué disputabais entre vosotros en el camino?
34 Mas ellos callaron; porque los unos con los otros habían disputado en el camino quién había de ser el mayor.
35 Entonces sentándose, llamó á los doce, y les dice: Si alguno quiere ser el primero, será el postrero de todos, y el servidor de todos.
36 Y tomando un niño, púsolo en medio de ellos; y tomándole en sus brazos, les dice:
37 El que recibiere en mi nombre uno de los tales niños, á mí recibe; y el que á mí recibe, no recibe á mí, mas al que me envió.
38 Y respondióle Juan, diciendo: Maestro, hemos visto á uno que en tu nombre echaba fuera los demonios, el cual no nos sigue; y se lo prohibimos, porque no nos sigue.
39 Y Jesús dijo: No se lo prohibáis; porque ninguno hay que haga milagro en mi nombre que luego pueda decir mal de mí.
40 Porque el que no es contra nosotros, por nosotros es.
41 Y cualquiera que os diere un vaso de agua en mi nombre, porque sois de Cristo, de cierto os digo que no perderá su recompensa.
42 Y cualquiera que escandalizare á uno de estos pequeñitos que creen en mí, mejor le fuera si se le atase una piedra de molino al cuello, y fuera echado en la mar.
43 Y si tu mano te escandalizare, córtala: mejor te es entrar á la vida manco, que teniendo dos manos ir á la Gehenna, al fuego que no puede ser apagado;
44 Donde su gusano no muere, y el fuego nunca se apaga.
45 Y si tu pie te fuere ocasión de caer, córtalo: mejor te es entrar á la vida cojo, que teniendo dos pies ser echado en la Gehenna, al fuego que no puede ser apagado;
46 Donde el gusano de ellos no muere, y el fuego nunca se apaga.
47 Y si tu ojo te fuere ocasión de caer, sácalo: mejor te es entrar al reino de Dios con un ojo, que teniendo dos ojos ser echado á la Gehenna;
48 Donde el gusano de ellos no muere, y el fuego nunca se apaga.
49 Porque todos serán salados con fuego, y todo sacrificio será salado con sal.
50 Buena es la sal; mas si la sal fuere desabrida, ¿con qué la adobaréis? Tened en vosotros mismos sal; y tened paz los unos con los otros.

9 Then Jesus said to the people, “I tell you the truth, some people standing here will not ·die [L taste death] before they see the kingdom of God ·come [arrive] with power.” [C “Seeing the kingdom of God” may refer to the Transfiguration that follows (9:1–8), Jesus’ resurrection, or the destruction of Jerusalem in ad 70.]
The Transfiguration on the Mountain(A)
2 Six days later, Jesus took Peter, James, and John [L and led them] up on a high mountain by themselves. ·While they watched [In their presence; In front of them], Jesus’ appearance was ·changed [transformed; T transfigured]. 3 His clothes became shining white, whiter than any ·person [launderer on earth] could ·make them [bleach them]. 4 Then Elijah and Moses appeared to them, talking with Jesus. [C God had given the Law through Moses, and Elijah was an important prophet (see 6:1); together they signify that Jesus fulfills the OT.]
5 Peter said to Jesus, “·Teacher [L Rabbi], it is good that we are here. Let us make three ·tents [shelters; shrines; tabernacles; Lev. 23:42]—one for you, one for Moses, and one for Elijah.” [C Perhaps Peter wanted to prolong their stay or to commemorate their visit.] 6 Peter did not know what to say, because he and the others were so frightened.
7 Then a cloud came and ·covered [overshadowed; Ex. 24:15] them, and a voice came from the cloud, saying, “This is my ·Son, whom I love [dearly loved Son; Ps. 2:7; Gen. 22:2; Mark 1:11]. Listen to him [Deut. 18:15; Acts 3:22]!”
8 Suddenly Peter, James, and John looked around, but they saw only Jesus there alone with them.
9 As they were coming down the mountain, Jesus ·commanded [instructed] them not to tell anyone about what they had seen until the Son of Man had risen from the dead.
10 So they ·obeyed Jesus [kept this statement/matter to themselves], but they discussed what he meant about rising from the dead.
11 Then they asked Jesus, “Why do the ·teachers of the law [scribes] say that Elijah must come first [Mal. 3:1; 4:5]?”
12 Jesus answered, “·They are right to say that Elijah must come first and [L Elijah is indeed coming, and he will] ·make everything the way it should be [restore/prepare everything]. But why does the Scripture say that the Son of Man will suffer much and ·that people will treat him as if he were nothing [be despised; be treated with contempt; be rejected; Is. 52:13—53:12]? 13 [L But] I tell you that Elijah has already come. And ·people [L they] did to him whatever they wanted to do, just as ·the Scriptures said it would happen [it is written about him].”
Jesus Heals a Sick Boy(B)
14 When Jesus, Peter, James, and John came back to the other ·followers [disciples], they saw a great crowd around them and the ·teachers of the law [scribes] arguing with them. 15 But as soon as the crowd saw Jesus, the people were ·surprised [amazed] and ran to welcome him.
16 Jesus asked, “What are you arguing about?”
17 A man [in the crowd] answered, “Teacher, I brought my son to you. He has an evil spirit in him that ·stops him from talking [makes him mute]. 18 When the spirit attacks him, it throws him on the ground. Then my son foams at the mouth, grinds his teeth, and becomes ·very stiff [rigid]. I asked your ·followers [disciples] to ·force [drive; cast] the evil spirit out, but they couldn’t.”
19 Jesus answered, “You ·people have no faith [unbelieving/faithless generation]. How long must I stay with you? How long must I put up with you? Bring the boy to me.”
20 So ·the followers [L they] brought him to Jesus. As soon as the evil spirit saw Jesus, it ·made the boy lose control of himself [threw the boy into convulsions], and he fell down and rolled on the ground, foaming at the mouth.
21 Jesus asked the boy’s father, “How long has this been happening?”
The father answered, “Since ·he was very young [childhood]. 22 The spirit often throws him into a fire or into water to ·kill [destroy] him. If you can do anything for him, please have ·pity [compassion] on us and help us.”
23 Jesus said to the father, “You said, ‘If you can!’ All things are possible for the one who believes.”
24 Immediately the father cried out, “I do believe! Help ·me to believe more [me not to doubt; me overcome my unbelief; L my unbelief]!”
25 When Jesus saw that a crowd was quickly gathering, he ·ordered [rebuked] the ·evil [defiling; L unclean] spirit, saying, “You deaf and mute spirit, I command you to come out of this boy and never enter him again!”
26 The evil spirit screamed and ·caused the boy to fall on the ground again [convulsed him violently]. Then the spirit came out. The boy looked as if he were dead, and many people said, “He is dead!” 27 But Jesus took hold of the boy’s hand and helped him to stand up.
28 When Jesus went into the house, his ·followers [disciples] began asking him privately, “Why couldn’t we ·force [drive; cast] that evil spirit out?”
29 Jesus answered, “That kind of spirit can only be forced out by prayer.”[a]
Jesus Again Talks About His Death(C)
30 Then Jesus and his ·followers [disciples] left that place and went through Galilee. He didn’t want anyone to know where he was, 31 because he was teaching his ·followers [disciples]. He said to them, “The Son of Man will be ·handed over [delivered over; betrayed] to ·people [L human hands], and they will kill him [C the “handing over” may be Judas’ betrayal or God’s actions in “giving up” his Son to accomplish salvation; Rom. 4:25]. After three days, he will rise from the dead.” 32 But they did not understand what Jesus meant, and they were afraid to ask him.
Who Is the Greatest?(D)
33 Jesus and his ·followers [disciples] went to Capernaum. When they went into a house there, he asked them, “What were you ·arguing about [discussing] on the road?” 34 But they did not answer, because their ·argument [discussion] on the road was about which one of them was the greatest.
35 Jesus sat down and called ·the twelve apostles [the Twelve] to him. He said, “Whoever wants to be ·the most important [first] must be last of all and servant of all.”
36 Then Jesus took a small child and had ·him [or her; C the Greek here does not specify gender] stand among them. Taking the child in his arms, he said, 37 “Whoever ·accepts [welcomes; receives] a child like this in my name [C as a representative or follower of Jesus] accepts me. And whoever ·accepts [welcomes; receives] me accepts [not only me, but] the One who sent me.” [C Children had low social status, so the saying indicates concern for the lowly.]
Anyone Not Against Us Is for Us(E)
38 Then John said, “Teacher, we saw someone using your name [C invoking your authority] to ·force [drive; cast] demons out of a person. We told him to stop, because he does not belong to our group.”
39 But Jesus said, “Don’t stop him, because anyone who uses my name to do powerful things will not ·easily [quickly] say evil things about me. 40 Whoever is not against us is ·with [for] us. 41 I tell you the truth, whoever gives you a drink of water because you belong to the ·Christ [Messiah] will ·truly get [L certainly not lose] his reward.
42 “If someone causes one of these little children who believes in me to ·sin [lose faith; stumble], it would be better for that person to have a ·large stone [large millstone; L millstone of a donkey] tied around his neck and be ·drowned [L thrown] in the sea. 43 If your hand causes you ·to sin [lose faith; stumble], cut it off. It is better for you ·to lose part of your body and live forever [L to enter life maimed] than to have two hands and go to ·hell [L Gehenna; C a valley outside of Jerusalem where in the OT period children were sacrificed to a pagan god; later used as a burning trash heap; a metaphor for hell], where the fire never goes out. |44 In hell the worm does not die; the fire is never put out.|[b] 45 If your foot causes you to ·sin [lose faith; stumble], cut it off. It is better for you ·to lose part of your body and to live forever [L to enter life crippled] than to have two feet and be thrown into ·hell [Gehenna; v. 43]. |46 In hell the worm does not die; the fire is never put out.|[c] 47 If your eye causes you to ·sin [lose faith; stumble], take it out. 50 “Salt is good, but if the salt loses its salty taste, you cannot make it salty again. So, ·be full of salt [L have salt in/among yourselves; C salt here may symbolize fellowship within the covenant], and have peace with each other.”

La transfiguración
2 (B)Seis días después, Jesús tomó* con Él a Pedro, a Jacobo[a] y a Juan(C), y los llevó* a ellos solos a un monte alto; y se transfiguró delante de ellos. 3 Sus vestiduras se volvieron resplandecientes, muy blancas(D), tal como ningún lavandero sobre la tierra las puede blanquear. 4 Y se les apareció Elías junto con Moisés, y estaban hablando con Jesús. 5 Entonces Pedro dijo* a Jesús: «Rabí[b](E), bueno es que estemos aquí; hagamos tres enramadas[c], una para Ti, otra para Moisés y otra para Elías(F)».

La venida de Elías
9 (I)Cuando bajaban del monte, Jesús les ordenó que no contaran a nadie(J) lo que habían visto, hasta que[h] el Hijo del Hombre resucitara de entre los muertos. 10 Y se guardaron para sí lo que fue dicho, discutiendo entre sí qué significaría[i] eso de resucitar de entre los muertos. 11 Le preguntaron a Jesús: «¿Por qué dicen los escribas que Elías debe venir primero(K)?».
12 «Es cierto que Elías, al venir primero, restaurará[j] todas las cosas», les dijo. «Y, sin embargo, ¿cómo está escrito del Hijo del Hombre(L)que ha de padecer mucho(M)y ser despreciado? 13 Pero Yo les digo que Elías ya[k]ha venido, y le hicieron cuanto quisieron, tal como está escrito de él».
Jesús sana a un muchacho endemoniado
14 (N)Cuando regresaron adonde estaban los otros discípulos, vieron una gran multitud que los rodeaba, y a unos escribas que discutían con ellos. 15 Enseguida, cuando toda la multitud vio a Jesús, quedó sorprendida(O), y corriendo hacia Él, lo saludaban. 16 «¿Qué discuten con ellos?», les preguntó.
17 Y uno de la multitud le respondió: «Maestro, te he traído a mi hijo que tiene un espíritu mudo, 18 y siempre[l] que se apodera de él, lo derriba, y echa espumarajos, cruje los dientes y se va consumiendo[m]. Dije a Tus discípulos que expulsaran al espíritu, pero no pudieron».
19 Jesús les dijo*: «¡Oh generación incrédula! ¿Hasta cuándo estaré con ustedes? ¿Hasta cuándo los tendré que soportar? ¡Traigan al muchacho!». 20 Y lo llevaron ante Él. Cuando el espíritu vio a Jesús, al instante sacudió con violencia al muchacho[n], y este, cayendo a tierra, se revolcaba echando espumarajos. 21 Jesús preguntó al padre: «¿Cuánto tiempo hace que le sucede esto?». «Desde su niñez», respondió. 22 «Muchas veces ese espíritu lo ha echado en el fuego y también en el agua para destruirlo. Pero si Tú puedes hacer algo, ten misericordia de nosotros y ayúdanos».
23 «¿Cómo “si Tú puedes?”», le dijo Jesús. «Todas las cosas son posibles para el que cree(P)». 24 Al instante el padre del muchacho gritó y dijo: «Creo; ayúdame en mi incredulidad». 25 Cuando Jesús vio que la gente corría a reunirse(Q), reprendió al espíritu inmundo, diciéndole: «Espíritu mudo y sordo, Yo te ordeno: sal de él y no vuelvas a entrar en él».
26 Después de gritar y de sacudirlo con terribles convulsiones, el espíritu salió: y el muchacho quedó como muerto, tanto, que la mayoría de ellos decían: «¡Está muerto!». 27 Pero Jesús, tomándolo de la mano, lo levantó, y él se puso en pie. 28 Cuando Jesús entro en casa(R), Sus discípulos le preguntaban en privado: «¿Por qué nosotros no pudimos expulsarlo?». 29 Jesús les dijo: «Esta clase con nada puede salir, sino con oración[o]».
Jesús anuncia otra vez Su muerte
30 (S)Saliendo de allí, iban pasando por Galilea, y Él no quería que nadie lo supiera. 31 Porque enseñaba a Sus discípulos, y les decía: «El Hijo del Hombre será entregado en manos de los hombres y lo matarán; y después de muerto, a los tres días resucitará(T)». 32 Pero ellos no entendían lo que les decía[p](U), y tenían miedo de preguntar a Jesús.
El mayor en el reino de los cielos
33 (V)Llegaron a Capernaúm; y estando ya en la casa, Jesús les preguntaba: «¿Qué discutían por el camino?». 34 Pero ellos guardaron silencio, porque en el camino habían discutido entre sí quién de ellos era el mayor(W). 35 Jesús se sentó, llamó a los doce discípulos y les dijo*: «Si alguien desea ser el primero, será[q]el último de todos y el servidor de todos(X)». 36 Tomando a un niño, lo puso en medio de ellos; y tomándolo en los brazos les dijo: 37 «El que reciba a un niño como este[r]en Mi nombre, me recibe a Mí; y el que me recibe a Mí, no me recibe a Mí, sino a Aquel que me envió(Y)».
Recompensas y advertencias
38 «(Z)Maestro», dijo Juan, «vimos a uno echando fuera demonios en Tu nombre, y tratamos de impedírselo, porque no nos seguía». 39 Pero Jesús dijo: «No se lo impidan, porque no hay nadie que haga un milagro en Mi nombre, y que pueda enseguida hablar mal de Mí. 40 Pues el que no está contra nosotros, por nosotros[s]está(AA). 41 Porque cualquiera que les dé a ustedes a beber un vaso de agua, por razón de[t]su nombre como seguidores de Cristo, en verdad les digo que no perderá su recompensa(AB). 42 Cualquiera que haga pecar[u]a uno de estos pequeñitos que creen en Mí, mejor le fuera si le hubieran atado[v]al cuello una piedra de molino de las que mueve un asno, y lo hubieran echado al mar(AC).
43 »Si tu mano te es ocasión de pecar[w] , córtala; te es mejor entrar en la vida manco, que teniendo las dos manos ir al infierno[x](AD) , al fuego que no se apaga(AE) , 44 [y]donde el gusano de ellos no muere, y el fuego no se apaga. 45 Y si tu pie te es ocasión de pecar, córtalo; te es mejor entrar cojo a la vida, que teniendo los dos pies ser echado al infierno[z](AF), 46 [aa]donde el gusano de ellos no muere, y el fuego no se apaga. 47 Y si tu ojo te es ocasión de pecar, sácatelo; te es mejor entrar al reino de Dios con un solo ojo, que teniendo dos ojos ser echado al infierno[ab](AG), 48 donde el gusano de ellos no muere(AH), y el fuego no se apaga(AI). 49 Porque todos serán salados con fuego[ac]. 50 La sal es buena; pero si la sal se vuelve insípida, ¿con qué la sazonarán(AJ)? Tengan sal en ustedes(AK)y estén en paz los unos con los otros(AL)».
