8 EN aquellos días, como hubo gran gentío, y no tenían qué comer, Jesús llamó á sus discípulos, y les dijo:
2 Tengo compasión de la multitud, porque ya hace tres días que están conmigo, y no tienen qué comer:
3 Y si los enviare en ayunas á sus casas, desmayarán en el camino; porque algunos de ellos han venido de lejos.
4 Y sus discípulos le respondieron: ¿De dónde podrá alguien hartar á estos de pan aquí en el desierto?
5 Y les pregunto: ¿Cuántos panes tenéis? Y ellos dijeron: Siete.
6 Entonces mandó á la multitud que se recostase en tierra; y tomando los siete panes, habiendo dado gracias, partió, y dió á sus discípulos que los pusiesen delante: y los pusieron delante á la multitud.
7 Tenían también unos pocos pececillos: y los bendijo, y mandó que también los pusiesen delante.
8 Y comieron, y se hartaron: y levantaron de los pedazos que habían sobrado, siete espuertas.
9 Y eran los que comieron, como cuatro mil: y los despidió.
10 Y luego entrando en el barco con sus discípulos, vino á las partes de Dalmanutha.
11 Y vinieron los Fariseos, y comenzaron á altercar con él, pidiéndole señal del cielo, tentándole.
12 Y gimiendo en su espíritu, dice: ¿Por qué pide señal esta generación? De cierto os digo que no se dará señal á esta generación.
13 Y dejándolos, volvió á entrar en el barco, y se fué de la otra parte.
14 Y se habían olvidado de tomar pan, y no tenían sino un pan consigo en el barco.
15 Y les mandó, diciendo: Mirad, guardaos de la levadura de los Fariseos, y de la levadura de Herodes.
16 Y altercaban los unos con los otros diciendo: Pan no tenemos.
17 Y como Jesús lo entendió, les dice: ¿Qué altercáis, porque no tenéis pan? ¿no consideráis ni entendéis? ¿aun tenéis endurecido vuestro corazón?
18 ¿Teniendo ojos no veis, y teniendo oídos no oís? ¿y no os acordáis?
19 Cuando partí los cinco panes entre cinco mil, ¿cuántas espuertas llenas de los pedazos alzasteis? Y ellos dijeron: Doce.
20 Y cuando los siete panes entre cuatro mil, ¿cuántas espuertas llenas de los pedazos alzasteis? Y ellos dijeron: Siete.
21 Y les dijo: ¿Cómo aún no entendéis?
22 Y vino á Bethsaida; y le traen un ciego, y le ruegan que le tocase.
23 Entonces, tomando la mano del ciego, le sacó fuera de la aldea; y escupiendo en sus ojos, y poniéndole las manos encima, le preguntó si veía algo.
24 Y él mirando, dijo: Veo los hombres, pues veo que andan como árboles.
25 Luego le puso otra vez las manos sobre sus ojos, y le hizo que mirase; y fué restablecido, y vió de lejos y claramente á todos.
26 Y envióle á su casa, diciendo: No entres en la aldea, ni lo digas á nadie en la aldea.
27 Y salió Jesús y sus discípulos por las aldeas de Cesarea de Filipo. Y en el camino preguntó á sus discípulos, diciéndoles: ¿Quién dicen los hombres que soy yo?
28 Y ellos respondieron: Juan Bautista; y otros, Elías; y otros, Alguno de los profetas.
29 Entonces él les dice: Y vosotros, ¿quién decís que soy yo? Y respondiendo Pedro, le dice: Tú eres el Cristo.
30 Y les apercibió que no hablasen de él á ninguno.
31 Y comenzó á enseñarles, que convenía que el Hijo del hombre padeciese mucho, y ser reprobado de los ancianos, y de los príncipes de los sacerdotes, y de los escribas, y ser muerto, y resucitar después de tres días.
32 Y claramente decía esta palabra. Entonces Pedro le tomó, y le comenzó á reprender.
33 Y él, volviéndose y mirando á sus discípulos, riñó á Pedro, diciendo: Apártate de mí, Satanás; porque no sabes las cosas que son de Dios, sino las que son de los hombres.
34 Y llamando á la gente con sus discípulos, les dijo: Cualquiera que quisiere venir en pos de mí, niéguese á sí mismo, y tome su cruz, y sígame.
35 Porque el que quisiere salvar su vida, la perderá; y el que perdiere su vida por causa de mí y del evangelio, la salvará.
36 Porque ¿qué aprovechará al hombre, si granjeare todo el mundo, y pierde su alma?
37 ¿O qué recompensa dará el hombre por su alma?
38 Porque el que se avergonzare de mí y de mis palabras en esta generación adulterina y pecadora, el Hijo del hombre se avergonzará también de él, cuando vendrá en la gloria de su Padre con los santos ángeles.

Jesús da de comer a una multitud(A)
8 Un día en que de nuevo se había juntado mucha gente y no tenían nada que comer, Jesús llamó a sus discípulos y les dijo:
2 —Siento compasión de esta gente, porque ya hace tres días que están aquí conmigo y no tienen nada que comer. 3 Y si los mando sin comer a sus casas, pueden desmayarse por el camino, porque algunos han venido de lejos.
4 Sus discípulos le contestaron:
—¿Pero cómo se les puede dar de comer en un lugar como éste, donde no vive nadie?
5 Jesús les preguntó:
—¿Cuántos panes tienen ustedes?
—Siete —contestaron ellos.
6 Entonces mandó que la gente se sentara en el suelo, tomó en sus manos los siete panes y, habiendo dado gracias a Dios, los partió y se los iba dando a sus discípulos, para que ellos los repartieran entre la gente, y así lo hicieron. 7 Tenían también unos cuantos pescaditos; Jesús pronunció sobre ellos la bendición, y también mandó repartirlos. 8 Todos comieron hasta quedar satisfechos, y recogieron los pedazos sobrantes en siete canastas. 9 Los que comieron eran cerca de cuatro mil. Luego Jesús los despidió, 10 subió a la barca con sus discípulos y se fue a la región de Dalmanuta.
Los fariseos piden una señal milagrosa(B)
11 Llegaron los fariseos y comenzaron a discutir con Jesús. Y para tenderle una trampa, le pidieron que hiciera alguna señal milagrosa que probara que él venía de parte de Dios. 12 Jesús suspiró profundamente y dijo:
—¿Por qué pide esta gente una señal milagrosa? Les aseguro que no se les dará ninguna señal.
13 Entonces los dejó, y volviendo a entrar en la barca se fue al otro lado del lago.
La levadura de los fariseos(C)
14 Se habían olvidado de llevar algo de comer, y solamente tenían un pan en la barca. 15 Jesús les advirtió:
—Miren, cuídense de la levadura de los fariseos y de la levadura de Herodes.
16 Los discípulos comentaban entre sí que no tenían pan.
17 Jesús se dio cuenta, y les dijo:
—¿Por qué dicen que no tienen pan? ¿Todavía no entienden ni se dan cuenta? ¿Tienen tan cerrado el entendimiento? 18 ¿Tienen ojos y no ven, y oídos y no oyen? ¿No se acuerdan? 19 Cuando repartí los cinco panes entre cinco mil hombres, ¿cuántas canastas llenas de pedazos recogieron?
Ellos contestaron:
—Doce.
20 —Y cuando repartí los siete panes entre cuatro mil, ¿cuántas canastas llenas recogieron?
Contestaron:
—Siete.
21 Entonces les dijo:
—¿Todavía no entienden?
Jesús sana a un ciego en Betsaida
22 Después llegaron a Betsaida, y llevaron un ciego a Jesús, y le rogaron que lo tocara. 23 Jesús tomó de la mano al ciego y lo sacó fuera del pueblo. Le mojó los ojos con saliva, puso las manos sobre él y le preguntó si podía ver algo. 24 El ciego comenzó a ver, y dijo:
—Veo a los hombres. Me parecen como árboles que andan.
25 Jesús le puso otra vez las manos sobre los ojos, y el hombre miró con atención y quedó sano. Ya todo lo veía claramente. 26 Entonces Jesús lo mandó a su casa, y le dijo:
—No vuelvas al pueblo.
Pedro declara que Jesús es el Mesías(D)
27 Después de esto, Jesús y sus discípulos fueron a las aldeas de la región de Cesarea de Filipo. En el camino, Jesús preguntó a sus discípulos:
—¿Quién dice la gente que soy yo?
28 Ellos contestaron:
—Algunos dicen que eres Juan el Bautista, otros dicen que eres Elías, y otros dicen que eres uno de los profetas.
29 —Y ustedes, ¿quién dicen que soy? —les preguntó.
Pedro le respondió:
—Tú eres el Mesías.
30 Pero Jesús les ordenó que no hablaran de él a nadie.
31 Jesús comenzó a enseñarles que el Hijo del hombre tendría que sufrir mucho, y que sería rechazado por los ancianos, por los jefes de los sacerdotes y por los maestros de la ley. Les dijo que lo iban a matar, pero que resucitaría a los tres días. 32 Esto se lo advirtió claramente. Entonces Pedro lo llevó aparte y comenzó a reprenderlo. 33 Pero Jesús se volvió, miró a los discípulos y reprendió a Pedro, diciéndole:
—¡Apártate de mí, Satanás! Tú no ves las cosas como las ve Dios, sino como las ven los hombres.
34 Luego Jesús llamó a sus discípulos y a la gente, y dijo:
—Si alguno quiere ser discípulo mío, olvídese de sí mismo, cargue con su cruz y sígame. 35 Porque el que quiera salvar su vida, la perderá; pero el que pierda la vida por causa mía y por aceptar el evangelio, la salvará. 36 ¿De qué le sirve al hombre ganar el mundo entero, si pierde la vida? 37 O también, ¿cuánto podrá pagar el hombre por su vida? 38 Pues si alguno se avergüenza de mí y de mi mensaje delante de esta gente infiel y pecadora, también el Hijo del hombre se avergonzará de él cuando venga con la gloria de su Padre y con los santos ángeles.

Jesus feeds four thousand people
8 In those days there was another large crowd with nothing to eat. Jesus called his disciples and told them, 2 “I feel sorry for the crowd because they have been with me for three days and have nothing to eat. 3 If I send them away hungry to their homes, they won’t have enough strength to travel, for some have come a long distance.”
4 His disciples responded, “How can anyone get enough food in this wilderness to satisfy these people?”
5 Jesus asked, “How much bread do you have?”
They said, “Seven loaves.”
6 He told the crowd to sit on the ground. He took the seven loaves, gave thanks, broke them apart, and gave them to his disciples to distribute; and they gave the bread to the crowd. 7 They also had a few fish. He said a blessing over them, then gave them to the disciples to hand out also. 8 They ate until they were full. They collected seven baskets full of leftovers. 9 This was a crowd of about four thousand people! Jesus sent them away, 10 then got into a boat with his disciples and went over to the region of Dalmanutha.
Looking for proof
11 The Pharisees showed up and began to argue with Jesus. To test him, they asked for a sign from heaven. 12 With an impatient sigh, Jesus said, “Why does this generation look for a sign? I assure you that no sign will be given to it.” 13 Leaving them, he got back in the boat and crossed to the other side of the lake.
Understanding about the bread
14 Jesus’ disciples had forgotten to bring any bread, so they had only one loaf with them in the boat. 15 He gave them strict orders: “Watch out and be on your guard for the yeast of the Pharisees as well as the yeast of Herod.”
16 The disciples discussed this among themselves, “He said this because we have no bread.”
17 Jesus knew what they were discussing and said, “Why are you talking about the fact that you don’t have any bread? Don’t you grasp what has happened? Don’t you understand? Are your hearts so resistant to what God is doing? 18 Don’t you have eyes? Why can’t you see? Don’t you have ears? Why can’t you hear? Don’t you remember? 19 When I broke five loaves of bread for those five thousand people, how many baskets full of leftovers did you gather?”
They answered, “Twelve.”
20 “And when I broke seven loaves of bread for those four thousand people, how many baskets full of leftovers did you gather?”
They answered, “Seven.”
21 Jesus said to them, “And you still don’t understand?”
A blind man is healed
22 Jesus and his disciples came to Bethsaida. Some people brought a blind man to Jesus and begged him to touch and heal him. 23 Taking the blind man’s hand, Jesus led him out of the village. After spitting on his eyes and laying his hands on the man, he asked him, “Do you see anything?”
24 The man looked up and said, “I see people. They look like trees, only they are walking around.”
25 Then Jesus placed his hands on the man’s eyes again. He looked with his eyes wide open, his sight was restored, and he could see everything clearly. 26 Then Jesus sent him home, saying, “Don’t go into the village!”
Jesus predicts his death
27 Jesus and his disciples went into the villages near Caesarea Philippi. On the way he asked his disciples, “Who do people say that I am?”
28 They told him, “Some say John the Baptist, others Elijah, and still others one of the prophets.”
29 He asked them, “And what about you? Who do you say that I am?”
Peter answered, “You are the Christ.” 30 Jesus ordered them not to tell anyone about him.
31 Then Jesus began to teach his disciples: “The Human One[a] must suffer many things and be rejected by the elders, chief priests, and the legal experts, and be killed, and then, after three days, rise from the dead.” 32 He said this plainly. But Peter took hold of Jesus and, scolding him, began to correct him. 33 Jesus turned and looked at his disciples, then sternly corrected Peter: “Get behind me, Satan. You are not thinking God’s thoughts but human thoughts.”
34 After calling the crowd together with his disciples, Jesus said to them, “All who want to come after me must say no to themselves, take up their cross, and follow me. 35 All who want to save their lives will lose them. But all who lose their lives because of me and because of the good news will save them. 36 Why would people gain the whole world but lose their lives? 37 What will people give in exchange for their lives? 38 Whoever is ashamed of me and my words in this unfaithful and sinful generation, the Human One[b] will be ashamed of that person when he comes in the Father’s glory with the holy angels.”

Jesus Feeds the Four Thousand(A)(B)(C)
8 During those days another large crowd gathered. Since they had nothing to eat, Jesus called his disciples to him and said, 2 “I have compassion for these people;(D) they have already been with me three days and have nothing to eat. 3 If I send them home hungry, they will collapse on the way, because some of them have come a long distance.”
4 His disciples answered, “But where in this remote place can anyone get enough bread to feed them?”
5 “How many loaves do you have?” Jesus asked.
“Seven,” they replied.
6 He told the crowd to sit down on the ground. When he had taken the seven loaves and given thanks, he broke them and gave them to his disciples to distribute to the people, and they did so. 7 They had a few small fish as well; he gave thanks for them also and told the disciples to distribute them.(E) 8 The people ate and were satisfied. Afterward the disciples picked up seven basketfuls of broken pieces that were left over.(F) 9 About four thousand were present. After he had sent them away, 10 he got into the boat with his disciples and went to the region of Dalmanutha.
11 The Pharisees came and began to question Jesus. To test him, they asked him for a sign from heaven.(G) 12 He sighed deeply(H) and said, “Why does this generation ask for a sign? Truly I tell you, no sign will be given to it.” 13 Then he left them, got back into the boat and crossed to the other side.
The Yeast of the Pharisees and Herod
14 The disciples had forgotten to bring bread, except for one loaf they had with them in the boat. 15 “Be careful,” Jesus warned them. “Watch out for the yeast(I) of the Pharisees(J) and that of Herod.”(K)
16 They discussed this with one another and said, “It is because we have no bread.”
17 Aware of their discussion, Jesus asked them: “Why are you talking about having no bread? Do you still not see or understand? Are your hearts hardened?(L) 18 Do you have eyes but fail to see, and ears but fail to hear? And don’t you remember? 19 When I broke the five loaves for the five thousand, how many basketfuls of pieces did you pick up?”
“Twelve,”(M) they replied.
20 “And when I broke the seven loaves for the four thousand, how many basketfuls of pieces did you pick up?”
They answered, “Seven.”(N)
21 He said to them, “Do you still not understand?”(O)
Jesus Heals a Blind Man at Bethsaida
22 They came to Bethsaida,(P) and some people brought a blind man(Q) and begged Jesus to touch him. 23 He took the blind man by the hand and led him outside the village. When he had spit(R) on the man’s eyes and put his hands on(S) him, Jesus asked, “Do you see anything?”
24 He looked up and said, “I see people; they look like trees walking around.”
25 Once more Jesus put his hands on the man’s eyes. Then his eyes were opened, his sight was restored, and he saw everything clearly. 26 Jesus sent him home, saying, “Don’t even go into[a] the village.”
Peter Declares That Jesus Is the Messiah(T)
27 Jesus and his disciples went on to the villages around Caesarea Philippi. On the way he asked them, “Who do people say I am?”
28 They replied, “Some say John the Baptist;(U) others say Elijah;(V) and still others, one of the prophets.”
29 “But what about you?” he asked. “Who do you say I am?”
Peter answered, “You are the Messiah.”(W)
30 Jesus warned them not to tell anyone about him.(X)
Jesus Predicts His Death(Y)
31 He then began to teach them that the Son of Man(Z) must suffer many things(AA) and be rejected by the elders, the chief priests and the teachers of the law,(AB) and that he must be killed(AC) and after three days(AD) rise again.(AE) 32 He spoke plainly(AF) about this, and Peter took him aside and began to rebuke him.
33 But when Jesus turned and looked at his disciples, he rebuked Peter. “Get behind me, Satan!”(AG) he said. “You do not have in mind the concerns of God, but merely human concerns.”
The Way of the Cross
34 Then he called the crowd to him along with his disciples and said: “Whoever wants to be my disciple must deny themselves and take up their cross and follow me.(AH) 35 For whoever wants to save their life[b] will lose it, but whoever loses their life for me and for the gospel will save it.(AI) 36 What good is it for someone to gain the whole world, yet forfeit their soul? 37 Or what can anyone give in exchange for their soul? 38 If anyone is ashamed of me and my words in this adulterous and sinful generation, the Son of Man(AJ) will be ashamed of them(AK) when he comes(AL) in his Father’s glory with the holy angels.”
