Dios Habla Hoy

Jesús en Nazaret(A)

6 Jesús se fue de allí a su propia tierra, y sus discípulos fueron con él. 2 Cuando llegó el sábado, comenzó a enseñar en la sinagoga. Y muchos oyeron a Jesús, y se preguntaron admirados:

—¿Dónde aprendió éste tantas cosas? ¿De dónde ha sacado esa sabiduría y los milagros que hace? 3 ¿No es éste el carpintero, el hijo de María y hermano de Santiago, José, Judas y Simón? ¿Y no viven sus hermanas también aquí, entre nosotros?

Y no tenían fe en él. 4 Pero Jesús les dijo:

—En todas partes se honra a un profeta, menos en su propia tierra, entre sus parientes y en su propia casa.

5 No pudo hacer allí ningún milagro, aparte de poner las manos sobre unos pocos enfermos y sanarlos. 6 Y estaba asombrado porque aquella gente no creía en él.

Jesús envía a los discípulos a anunciar el reino de Dios(B)

Jesús recorría las aldeas cercanas, enseñando. 7 Llamó a los doce discípulos, y comenzó a enviarlos de dos en dos, dándoles autoridad sobre los espíritus impuros. 8 Les ordenó que no llevaran nada para el camino, sino solamente un bastón. No debían llevar pan ni provisiones ni dinero. 9 Podían ponerse sandalias, pero no llevar ropa de repuesto. 10 Les dijo:

—Cuando entren ustedes en una casa, quédense allí hasta que se vayan del lugar. 11 Y si en algún lugar no los reciben ni los quieren oír, salgan de allí y sacúdanse el polvo de los pies, para que les sirva a ellos de advertencia.

12 Entonces salieron los discípulos a decirle a la gente que se volviera a Dios. 13 También expulsaron muchos demonios, y curaron a muchos enfermos ungiéndolos con aceite.

La muerte de Juan el Bautista(C)

14 El rey Herodes oyó hablar de Jesús, cuya fama había corrido por todas partes. Pues unos decían: «Juan el Bautista ha resucitado, y por eso tiene este poder milagroso.»

15 Otros decían: «Es el profeta Elías.»

Y otros: «Es un profeta, como los antiguos profetas.»

16 Al oír estas cosas, Herodes decía:

—Ése es Juan. Yo mandé cortarle la cabeza y ahora ha resucitado.

17 Es que, por causa de Herodías, Herodes había mandado arrestar a Juan, y lo había hecho encadenar en la cárcel. Herodías era esposa de Filipo, hermano de Herodes, pero Herodes se había casado con ella. 18 Y Juan había dicho a Herodes: «No debes tener como tuya a la mujer de tu hermano.»

19 Herodías odiaba por eso a Juan, y quería matarlo; pero no podía, 20 porque Herodes le tenía miedo, sabiendo que era un hombre justo y santo, y lo protegía. Y aunque al oírlo se quedaba sin saber qué hacer, Herodes escuchaba a Juan de buena gana. 21 Pero Herodías vio llegar su oportunidad cuando Herodes, en su cumpleaños, dio un banquete a sus jefes y comandantes y a las personas importantes de Galilea. 22 La hija de Herodías entró en el lugar del banquete y bailó, y el baile gustó tanto a Herodes y a los que estaban cenando con él, que el rey dijo a la muchacha:

—Pídeme lo que quieras, y te lo daré.

23 Y le juró una y otra vez que le daría cualquier cosa que pidiera, aunque fuera la mitad del país que él gobernaba. 24 Ella salió, y le preguntó a su madre:

—¿Qué pediré?

Le contestó:

—Pídele la cabeza de Juan el Bautista.

25 La muchacha entró de prisa donde estaba el rey, y le dijo:

—Quiero que ahora mismo me des en un plato la cabeza de Juan el Bautista.

26 El rey se puso muy triste; pero como había hecho un juramento en presencia de sus invitados, no quiso negarle lo que le pedía. 27 Así que mandó en seguida a un soldado con la orden de llevarle la cabeza de Juan. Fue el soldado a la cárcel, le cortó la cabeza a Juan 28 y se la llevó en un plato. Se la dio a la muchacha, y ella se la entregó a su madre.

29 Cuando los seguidores de Juan lo supieron, recogieron el cuerpo y se lo llevaron a enterrar.

Jesús da de comer a una multitud(D)

30 Después de esto, los apóstoles se reunieron con Jesús y le contaron todo lo que habían hecho y enseñado. 31 Jesús les dijo:

—Vengan, vamos nosotros solos a descansar un poco en un lugar tranquilo.

Porque iba y venía tanta gente, que ellos ni siquiera tenían tiempo para comer. 32 Así que Jesús y sus apóstoles se fueron en una barca a un lugar apartado. 33 Pero muchos los vieron ir, y los reconocieron; entonces de todos los pueblos corrieron allá, y llegaron antes que ellos. 34 Al bajar Jesús de la barca, vio la multitud, y sintió compasión de ellos, porque estaban como ovejas que no tienen pastor; y comenzó a enseñarles muchas cosas. 35 Por la tarde, sus discípulos se le acercaron y le dijeron:

—Ya es tarde, y éste es un lugar solitario. 36 Despide a la gente, para que vayan por los campos y las aldeas de alrededor y se compren algo de comer.

37 Pero Jesús les contestó:

—Denles ustedes de comer.

Ellos respondieron:

—¿Quieres que vayamos a comprar pan por el equivalente al salario de doscientos días, para darles de comer?

38 Jesús les dijo:

—¿Cuántos panes tienen ustedes? Vayan a verlo.

Cuando lo averiguaron, le dijeron:

—Cinco panes y dos pescados.

39 Entonces les mandó que hicieran sentar a la gente en grupos sobre la hierba verde; 40 y se sentaron en grupos de cien y de cincuenta. 41 Luego Jesús tomó en sus manos los cinco panes y los dos pescados y, mirando al cielo, pronunció la bendición, partió los panes y se los fue dando a sus discípulos para que los repartieran entre la gente. Repartió también los dos pescados entre todos. 42 Todos comieron hasta quedar satisfechos; 43 recogieron los pedazos sobrantes de pan y de pescado, y con ellos llenaron doce canastas. 44 Los que comieron de aquellos panes fueron cinco mil hombres.

Jesús camina sobre el agua(E)

45 Después de esto, Jesús hizo que sus discípulos subieran a la barca para que cruzaran el lago antes que él, en dirección a Betsaida, mientras él despedía a la gente. 46 Y cuando la hubo despedido, se fue al cerro a orar. 47 Al llegar la noche, la barca ya estaba en medio del lago. Jesús, que se había quedado solo en tierra, 48 vio que remaban con dificultad, porque tenían el viento en contra. A la madrugada, fue Jesús hacia ellos caminando sobre el agua, y ya iba a pasar junto a ellos. 49 Cuando lo vieron andar sobre el agua, pensaron que era un fantasma, y gritaron; 50 porque todos lo vieron y se asustaron. Pero en seguida él les habló, diciéndoles:

—¡Calma! ¡Soy yo: no tengan miedo!

51 Subió a la barca, y se calmó el viento; y ellos se quedaron muy asombrados, 52 porque no habían entendido el milagro de los panes, pues tenían el entendimiento oscurecido.

Jesús sana a los enfermos de Genesaret(F)

53 Cruzaron el lago y llegaron a la tierra de Genesaret, donde amarraron la barca a la orilla. 54 Tan pronto como bajaron de la barca, la gente reconoció a Jesús. 55 Corrieron por toda aquella región, y comenzaron a llevar en camillas a los enfermos a donde oían decir que estaba Jesús. 56 Y dondequiera que él entraba, ya fuera en las aldeas, en los pueblos o en los campos, ponían a los enfermos en las calles y le rogaban que los dejara tocar siquiera el borde de su capa; y todos los que la tocaban, quedaban sanos.

Gesù a Nazaret

6 (A)Poi partì di là e andò nel suo paese e i suoi discepoli lo seguirono.

2 Venuto il sabato, si mise a insegnare nella sinagoga; molti, udendolo, si stupivano e dicevano: «Da dove gli vengono queste cose? Che sapienza è questa che gli è data? E che cosa sono queste opere potenti fatte per mano sua? 3 Non è questi il falegname, il figlio di Maria, e il fratello di Giacomo, di Iose, di Giuda e di Simone? Le sue sorelle non stanno qui da noi?» E si scandalizzavano a causa di lui.

4 Ma Gesù diceva loro: «Nessun profeta è disprezzato se non nella sua patria, fra i suoi parenti e in casa sua». 5 E non vi poté fare alcuna opera potente, ad eccezione di pochi malati a cui impose le mani e li guarì. 6 E si meravigliava della loro incredulità.

La missione dei dodici apostoli

(B)E andava in giro per i villaggi, insegnando.

7 Poi chiamò a sé i dodici e cominciò a mandarli a due a due; e diede loro potere sugli spiriti immondi. 8 Comandò loro di non prendere niente per il viaggio; né pane, né sacca, né denaro nella cintura, ma soltanto un bastone; 9 di calzare i sandali e di non indossare due tuniche.

10 Diceva loro: «Dovunque sarete entrati in una casa, trattenetevi lì finché non ve ne andiate da quel luogo; 11 e se in qualche luogo non vi ricevono[a] né vi ascoltano, andando via scuotetevi la polvere dai piedi come testimonianza contro di loro [. In verità vi dico che, nel giorno del giudizio, la sorte di Sodoma e Gomorra sarà più tollerabile di quella di tale città]».

12 E, partiti, predicavano alla gente di ravvedersi; 13 scacciavano molti demòni, ungevano d’olio molti infermi e li guarivano.

Martirio di Giovanni il battista

14 (C)Il re Erode udì parlare di Gesù, perché il suo nome era diventato ben conosciuto. Alcuni dicevano[b]: «Giovanni il battista è risuscitato dai morti; è per questo che agiscono in lui le potenze miracolose». 15 Altri invece dicevano: «È Elia!» E altri: «È un profeta come quelli di una volta[c]». 16 Ma Erode, udito ciò, diceva: «Giovanni, che io ho fatto decapitare, lui è risuscitato [dai morti]!»

17 Poiché Erode aveva fatto arrestare Giovanni e lo aveva fatto incatenare in prigione a motivo di Erodiade, moglie di Filippo suo fratello, che egli, Erode, aveva sposata. 18 Giovanni infatti gli diceva: «Non ti è lecito tenere la moglie di tuo fratello!» 19 Perciò Erodiade gli serbava rancore e voleva farlo morire, ma non poteva. 20 Infatti Erode aveva soggezione di Giovanni, sapendo che era uomo giusto e santo, e lo proteggeva; dopo averlo udito era molto perplesso[d] e lo ascoltava volentieri.

21 Ma venne un giorno opportuno quando Erode, al suo compleanno, fece un convito ai grandi della sua corte, agli ufficiali e ai notabili della Galilea. 22 La figlia della stessa Erodiade entrò e ballò, e piacque a Erode e ai commensali. Il re disse alla ragazza: «Chiedimi quello che vuoi e te lo darò». 23 E le giurò: «Ti darò quel che mi chiederai, fino alla metà del mio regno». 24 Costei, uscita, domandò a sua madre: «Che chiederò?» La madre disse: «La testa di Giovanni il battista». 25 E, ritornata in fretta dal re, gli fece questa richiesta: «Voglio che sul momento tu mi dia, su un piatto, la testa di Giovanni il battista». 26 Il re ne fu molto rattristato; ma, a motivo dei giuramenti fatti e dei commensali, non volle dirle di no; 27 e il re mandò subito una guardia con l’ordine di portargli la testa di Giovanni. 28 La guardia andò, lo decapitò nella prigione e portò la testa su un piatto; la diede alla ragazza e la ragazza la diede a sua madre. 29 I discepoli di Giovanni, udito questo, andarono, ne presero il cadavere e lo deposero in un sepolcro.

Moltiplicazione dei pani per cinquemila uomini

30 (D)Gli apostoli si riunirono attorno a Gesù e gli riferirono tutto quello che avevano fatto e insegnato. 31 Ed egli disse loro: «Venitevene ora in disparte, in un luogo solitario, e riposatevi un poco». Difatti era tanta la gente che andava e veniva, che essi non avevano neppure il tempo di mangiare.

32 Partirono dunque con la barca per andare in un luogo solitario in disparte. 33 Molti li videro partire[e] e li riconobbero[f]; e da tutte le città accorsero a piedi e giunsero là prima di loro [e si strinsero intorno a lui]. 34 Com’egli fu sbarcato[g], vide una gran folla e ne ebbe compassione, perché erano come pecore che non hanno pastore; e si mise a insegnare loro molte cose.

35 Essendo già tardi, i suoi discepoli gli si accostarono e gli dissero: «Questo luogo è deserto ed è già tardi; 36 lasciali andare, affinché vadano per le campagne e per i villaggi dei dintorni e si comprino qualcosa da mangiare[h]». 37 Ma egli rispose loro: «Date loro voi da mangiare». Ed essi a lui: «Andremo noi a comprare del pane per duecento denari e daremo loro da mangiare?» 38 Egli domandò loro: «Quanti pani avete? Andate a vedere». Essi si accertarono e risposero: «Cinque, e due pesci». 39 Allora egli comandò loro di farli accomodare tutti a gruppi sull’erba verde; 40 e si sedettero per gruppi di cento e di cinquanta. 41 Poi Gesù prese i cinque pani e i due pesci e, alzati gli occhi verso il cielo, benedisse e spezzò i pani, e li dava ai {suoi} discepoli affinché li distribuissero alla gente; e divise pure i due pesci fra tutti. 42 Tutti mangiarono e furono sazi, 43 e si raccolsero dodici ceste piene di pezzi di pane e di resti dei pesci. 44 Quelli che avevano mangiato {i pani} erano[i] cinquemila uomini.

Gesù cammina sul mare

45 (E)Subito dopo, Gesù obbligò i suoi discepoli a salire sulla barca e a precederlo sull’altra riva, verso Betsaida, mentre egli avrebbe congedato la folla. 46 Preso commiato, se ne andò sul monte a pregare.

47 Fattosi sera, la barca era in mezzo al mare ed egli era solo a terra. 48 Vedendo i discepoli che si affannavano a remare perché il vento era loro contrario, verso la quarta vigilia[j] della notte, andò incontro a loro camminando sul mare; e voleva oltrepassarli, 49 ma essi, vedendolo camminare sul mare, pensarono che fosse un fantasma e gridarono; 50 perché tutti lo videro e ne furono sconvolti. Ma subito egli parlò loro e disse: «Coraggio, sono io[k]; non abbiate paura!» 51 Salì sulla barca con loro e il vento si calmò; ed essi erano {profondamente} stupiti in se stessi [e si meravigliarono], 52 perché non avevano capito il fatto dei pani, anzi il loro cuore era indurito[l].

Gesù guarisce i malati di Gennesaret

53 (F)Passati all’altra riva, vennero a Gennesaret e scesero a terra. 54 Come furono sbarcati, subito la gente, riconosciutolo, 55 corse per tutto il paese e cominciarono a portare i malati sui lettucci, dovunque si sentiva dire che egli si trovasse. 56 Dovunque egli giungeva, in villaggi, città o campagne, portavano gli infermi nelle piazze e lo pregavano che li lasciasse toccare almeno il lembo della sua veste. E tutti quelli che lo toccavano erano guariti.

A Prophet Without Honor(A)

6 Jesus left there and went to his hometown,(B) accompanied by his disciples. 2 When the Sabbath came,(C) he began to teach in the synagogue,(D) and many who heard him were amazed.(E)

“Where did this man get these things?” they asked. “What’s this wisdom that has been given him? What are these remarkable miracles he is performing? 3 Isn’t this the carpenter? Isn’t this Mary’s son and the brother of James, Joseph,[a] Judas and Simon?(F) Aren’t his sisters here with us?” And they took offense at him.(G)

4 Jesus said to them, “A prophet is not without honor except in his own town, among his relatives and in his own home.”(H) 5 He could not do any miracles there, except lay his hands on(I) a few sick people and heal them. 6 He was amazed at their lack of faith.

Jesus Sends Out the Twelve(J)

Then Jesus went around teaching from village to village.(K) 7 Calling the Twelve to him,(L) he began to send them out two by two(M) and gave them authority over impure spirits.(N)

8 These were his instructions: “Take nothing for the journey except a staff—no bread, no bag, no money in your belts. 9 Wear sandals but not an extra shirt. 10 Whenever you enter a house, stay there until you leave that town. 11 And if any place will not welcome you or listen to you, leave that place and shake the dust off your feet(O) as a testimony against them.”

12 They went out and preached that people should repent.(P) 13 They drove out many demons and anointed many sick people with oil(Q) and healed them.

John the Baptist Beheaded(R)(S)

14 King Herod heard about this, for Jesus’ name had become well known. Some were saying,[b] “John the Baptist(T) has been raised from the dead, and that is why miraculous powers are at work in him.”

15 Others said, “He is Elijah.”(U)

And still others claimed, “He is a prophet,(V) like one of the prophets of long ago.”(W)

16 But when Herod heard this, he said, “John, whom I beheaded, has been raised from the dead!”

17 For Herod himself had given orders to have John arrested, and he had him bound and put in prison.(X) He did this because of Herodias, his brother Philip’s wife, whom he had married. 18 For John had been saying to Herod, “It is not lawful for you to have your brother’s wife.”(Y) 19 So Herodias nursed a grudge against John and wanted to kill him. But she was not able to, 20 because Herod feared John and protected him, knowing him to be a righteous and holy man.(Z) When Herod heard John, he was greatly puzzled[c]; yet he liked to listen to him.

21 Finally the opportune time came. On his birthday Herod gave a banquet(AA) for his high officials and military commanders and the leading men of Galilee.(AB) 22 When the daughter of[d] Herodias came in and danced, she pleased Herod and his dinner guests.

The king said to the girl, “Ask me for anything you want, and I’ll give it to you.” 23 And he promised her with an oath, “Whatever you ask I will give you, up to half my kingdom.”(AC)

24 She went out and said to her mother, “What shall I ask for?”

“The head of John the Baptist,” she answered.

25 At once the girl hurried in to the king with the request: “I want you to give me right now the head of John the Baptist on a platter.”

26 The king was greatly distressed, but because of his oaths and his dinner guests, he did not want to refuse her. 27 So he immediately sent an executioner with orders to bring John’s head. The man went, beheaded John in the prison, 28 and brought back his head on a platter. He presented it to the girl, and she gave it to her mother. 29 On hearing of this, John’s disciples came and took his body and laid it in a tomb.

Jesus Feeds the Five Thousand(AD)(AE)

30 The apostles(AF) gathered around Jesus and reported to him all they had done and taught.(AG) 31 Then, because so many people were coming and going that they did not even have a chance to eat,(AH) he said to them, “Come with me by yourselves to a quiet place and get some rest.”

32 So they went away by themselves in a boat(AI) to a solitary place. 33 But many who saw them leaving recognized them and ran on foot from all the towns and got there ahead of them. 34 When Jesus landed and saw a large crowd, he had compassion on them, because they were like sheep without a shepherd.(AJ) So he began teaching them many things.

35 By this time it was late in the day, so his disciples came to him. “This is a remote place,” they said, “and it’s already very late. 36 Send the people away so that they can go to the surrounding countryside and villages and buy themselves something to eat.”

37 But he answered, “You give them something to eat.”(AK)

They said to him, “That would take more than half a year’s wages[e]! Are we to go and spend that much on bread and give it to them to eat?”

38 “How many loaves do you have?” he asked. “Go and see.”

When they found out, they said, “Five—and two fish.”(AL)

39 Then Jesus directed them to have all the people sit down in groups on the green grass. 40 So they sat down in groups of hundreds and fifties. 41 Taking the five loaves and the two fish and looking up to heaven, he gave thanks and broke the loaves.(AM) Then he gave them to his disciples to distribute to the people. He also divided the two fish among them all. 42 They all ate and were satisfied, 43 and the disciples picked up twelve basketfuls of broken pieces of bread and fish. 44 The number of the men who had eaten was five thousand.

Jesus Walks on the Water(AN)(AO)

45 Immediately Jesus made his disciples get into the boat(AP) and go on ahead of him to Bethsaida,(AQ) while he dismissed the crowd. 46 After leaving them, he went up on a mountainside to pray.(AR)

47 Later that night, the boat was in the middle of the lake, and he was alone on land. 48 He saw the disciples straining at the oars, because the wind was against them. Shortly before dawn he went out to them, walking on the lake. He was about to pass by them, 49 but when they saw him walking on the lake, they thought he was a ghost.(AS) They cried out, 50 because they all saw him and were terrified.

Immediately he spoke to them and said, “Take courage! It is I. Don’t be afraid.”(AT) 51 Then he climbed into the boat(AU) with them, and the wind died down.(AV) They were completely amazed, 52 for they had not understood about the loaves; their hearts were hardened.(AW)

53 When they had crossed over, they landed at Gennesaret and anchored there.(AX) 54 As soon as they got out of the boat, people recognized Jesus. 55 They ran throughout that whole region and carried the sick on mats to wherever they heard he was. 56 And wherever he went—into villages, towns or countryside—they placed the sick in the marketplaces. They begged him to let them touch even the edge of his cloak,(AY) and all who touched it were healed.

8 And commanded them that they should take nothing for their journey, save a staff only; no scrip, no bread, no money in their purse:

9 But be shod with sandals; and not put on two coats.

10 And he said unto them, In what place soever ye enter into an house, there abide till ye depart from that place.

11 And whosoever shall not receive you, nor hear you, when ye depart thence, shake off the dust under your feet for a testimony against them. Verily I say unto you, It shall be more tolerable for Sodom and Gomorrha in the day of judgment, than for that city.

12 And they went out, and preached that men should repent.

13 And they cast out many devils, and anointed with oil many that were sick, and healed them.

14 And king Herod heard of him; (for his name was spread abroad:) and he said, That John the Baptist was risen from the dead, and therefore mighty works do shew forth themselves in him.

15 Others said, That it is Elias. And others said, That it is a prophet, or as one of the prophets.

16 But when Herod heard thereof, he said, It is John, whom I beheaded: he is risen from the dead.

17 For Herod himself had sent forth and laid hold upon John, and bound him in prison for Herodias' sake, his brother Philip's wife: for he had married her.

18 For John had said unto Herod, It is not lawful for thee to have thy brother's wife.

19 Therefore Herodias had a quarrel against him, and would have killed him; but she could not:

20 For Herod feared John, knowing that he was a just man and an holy, and observed him; and when he heard him, he did many things, and heard him gladly.

21 And when a convenient day was come, that Herod on his birthday made a supper to his lords, high captains, and chief estates of Galilee;

22 And when the daughter of the said Herodias came in, and danced, and pleased Herod and them that sat with him, the king said unto the damsel, Ask of me whatsoever thou wilt, and I will give it thee.

23 And he sware unto her, Whatsoever thou shalt ask of me, I will give it thee, unto the half of my kingdom.

24 And she went forth, and said unto her mother, What shall I ask? And she said, The head of John the Baptist.

25 And she came in straightway with haste unto the king, and asked, saying, I will that thou give me by and by in a charger the head of John the Baptist.

26 And the king was exceeding sorry; yet for his oath's sake, and for their sakes which sat with him, he would not reject her.

27 And immediately the king sent an executioner, and commanded his head to be brought: and he went and beheaded him in the prison,

28 And brought his head in a charger, and gave it to the damsel: and the damsel gave it to her mother.

29 And when his disciples heard of it, they came and took up his corpse, and laid it in a tomb.

30 And the apostles gathered themselves together unto Jesus, and told him all things, both what they had done, and what they had taught.

31 And he said unto them, Come ye yourselves apart into a desert place, and rest a while: for there were many coming and going, and they had no leisure so much as to eat.

32 And they departed into a desert place by ship privately.

33 And the people saw them departing, and many knew him, and ran afoot thither out of all cities, and outwent them, and came together unto him.

34 And Jesus, when he came out, saw much people, and was moved with compassion toward them, because they were as sheep not having a shepherd: and he began to teach them many things.

35 And when the day was now far spent, his disciples came unto him, and said, This is a desert place, and now the time is far passed:

36 Send them away, that they may go into the country round about, and into the villages, and buy themselves bread: for they have nothing to eat.

37 He answered and said unto them, Give ye them to eat. And they say unto him, Shall we go and buy two hundred pennyworth of bread, and give them to eat?

38 He saith unto them, How many loaves have ye? go and see. And when they knew, they say, Five, and two fishes.

39 And he commanded them to make all sit down by companies upon the green grass.

40 And they sat down in ranks, by hundreds, and by fifties.

41 And when he had taken the five loaves and the two fishes, he looked up to heaven, and blessed, and brake the loaves, and gave them to his disciples to set before them; and the two fishes divided he among them all.

42 And they did all eat, and were filled.

43 And they took up twelve baskets full of the fragments, and of the fishes.

44 And they that did eat of the loaves were about five thousand men.

45 And straightway he constrained his disciples to get into the ship, and to go to the other side before unto Bethsaida, while he sent away the people.

46 And when he had sent them away, he departed into a mountain to pray.

47 And when even was come, the ship was in the midst of the sea, and he alone on the land.

48 And he saw them toiling in rowing; for the wind was contrary unto them: and about the fourth watch of the night he cometh unto them, walking upon the sea, and would have passed by them.

49 But when they saw him walking upon the sea, they supposed it had been a spirit, and cried out:

50 For they all saw him, and were troubled. And immediately he talked with them, and saith unto them, Be of good cheer: it is I; be not afraid.

51 And he went up unto them into the ship; and the wind ceased: and they were sore amazed in themselves beyond measure, and wondered.

52 For they considered not the miracle of the loaves: for their heart was hardened.

53 And when they had passed over, they came into the land of Gennesaret, and drew to the shore.

54 And when they were come out of the ship, straightway they knew him,

55 And ran through that whole region round about, and began to carry about in beds those that were sick, where they heard he was.

56 And whithersoever he entered, into villages, or cities, or country, they laid the sick in the streets, and besought him that they might touch if it were but the border of his garment: and as many as touched him were made whole.

And what wisdom is this which is given to Him, that such mighty works are performed by His hands! 3 Is this not the carpenter, the Son of Mary, and (E)brother of James, Joses, Judas, and Simon? Sending Out the Twelve(K)

7 (L)And He called the twelve to Himself, and began to send them out (M)two by two, and gave them power over unclean spirits. 8 He commanded them to take nothing for the journey except a staff—no bag, no bread, no copper in their money belts— 9 but (N)to wear sandals, and not to put on two tunics.

10 (O)Also He said to them, “In whatever place you enter a house, stay there till you depart from that place. 11 (P)And [a]whoever will not receive you nor hear you, when you depart from there, (Q)shake off the dust under your feet as a testimony against them. [b]Assuredly, I say to you, it will be more tolerable for Sodom and Gomorrah in the day of judgment than for that city!”

12 So they went out and preached that people should repent. 13 And they cast out many demons, (R)and anointed with oil many who were sick, and healed them.

John the Baptist Beheaded(S)

14 (T)Now King Herod heard of Him, for His name had become well known. And he said, “John the Baptist is risen from the dead, and therefore (U)these powers are at work in him.”

15 (V)Others said, “It is Elijah.”

And others said, “It is [c]the Prophet, (W)or like one of the prophets.”

16 (X)But when Herod heard, he said, “This is John, whom I beheaded; he has been raised from the dead!” 17 For Herod himself had sent and laid hold of John, and bound him in prison for the sake of Herodias, his brother Philip’s wife; for he had married her. 18 Because John had said to Herod, (Y)“It is not lawful for you to have your brother’s wife.”

19 Therefore Herodias [d]held it against him and wanted to kill him, but she could not; 20 for Herod (Z)feared John, knowing that he was a just and holy man, and he protected him. And when he heard him, he [e]did many things, and heard him gladly.

Feeding the Five Thousand(AF)

33 But [f]the multitudes saw them departing, and many (AK)knew Him and ran there on foot from all the cities. They arrived before them and came together to Him. 34 (AL)And Jesus, when He came out, saw a great multitude and was moved with compassion for them, because they were like (AM)sheep not having a shepherd. So (AN)He began to teach them many things. 35 (AO)When the day was now far spent, His disciples came to Him and said, “This is a deserted place, and already the hour is late. 36 Send them away, that they may go into the surrounding country and villages and buy themselves [g]bread; for they have nothing to eat.”

37 But He answered and said to them, “You give them something to eat.”

And they said to Him, (AP)“Shall we go and buy two hundred denarii worth of bread and give them something to eat?”

38 But He said to them, “How many loaves do you have? Go and see.”

Jesus Walks on the Sea(AU)

45 (AV)Immediately He [i]made His disciples get into the boat and go before Him to the other side, to Bethsaida, while He sent the multitude away. 46 And when He had sent them away, He (AW)departed to the mountain to pray. 47 Now when evening came, the boat was in the middle of the sea; and He was alone on the land. 48 Then He saw them straining at rowing, for the wind was against them. Now about the fourth watch of the night He came to them, walking on the sea, and (AX)would have passed them by. 49 And when they saw Him walking on the sea, they supposed it was a (AY)ghost, and cried out; 50 for they all saw Him and were troubled. But immediately He talked with them and said to them, (AZ)“Be[j] of good cheer! It is I; do not be (BA)afraid.” 51 Then He went up into the boat to them, and the wind (BB)ceased. And they were greatly (BC)amazed in themselves beyond measure, and marveled. 52 For (BD)they had not understood about the loaves, because their (BE)heart was hardened.

Many Touch Him and Are Made Well(BF)

53 (BG)When they had crossed over, they came to the land of Gennesaret and anchored there. 54 And when they came out of the boat, immediately [k]the people recognized Him, 55 ran through that whole surrounding region, and began to carry about on beds those who were sick to wherever they heard He was. 56 Wherever He entered, into villages, cities, or the country, they laid the sick in the marketplaces, and begged Him that (BH)they might just touch the (BI)hem of His garment. And as many as touched Him were made well.
