Jesús enseña en Nazaret

6 (A)Jesús se marchó de allí y llegó* a Su pueblo(B), y Sus discípulos lo siguieron*. 2 Cuando llegó el día de reposo, comenzó a enseñar en la sinagoga(C); y muchos que escuchaban se asombraban(D), diciendo: «¿Dónde obtuvo Este tales[a] cosas, y cuál es esta sabiduría que le ha sido dada, y estos milagros[b] que hace con Sus manos? 3 ¿No es Este el carpintero, el hijo de María, y hermano(E) de Jacobo[c], José, Judas y Simón(F)? ¿No están Sus hermanas(G) aquí con nosotros?». Y se escandalizaban a causa de Él(H). 4 Y Jesús les dijo: «No hay profeta sin honra sino en su propia tierra(I), y entre sus parientes y en su casa(J)».

5 Y no pudo hacer allí ningún milagro[d]; solo sanó a unos pocos enfermos sobre los cuales puso Sus manos(K). 6 Estaba maravillado de la incredulidad de ellos.

Y recorría las aldeas de alrededor enseñando(L).

Jesús envía a los doce

7 (M)Entonces Jesús llamó* a los doce(N) y comenzó a enviarlos de dos en dos(O), dándoles autoridad[e] sobre los espíritus inmundos; 8 y les ordenó que no llevaran nada para el camino(P), sino solo un bordón; ni pan, ni alforja[f], ni dinero en el cinto; 9 sino calzados con sandalias. «No lleven dos túnicas[g]», les dijo. 10 Y añadió: «Dondequiera que entren en una casa, quédense en ella hasta que salgan de la población[h]. 11 En cualquier lugar que no los reciban ni los escuchen, al salir de allí, sacúdanse el polvo de la planta[i]de los pies(Q)en testimonio contra ellos».

12 Saliendo los doce, predicaban[j](R) que todos se arrepintieran. 13 También echaban fuera muchos demonios, y ungían con aceite a muchos enfermos y los sanaban(S).

Muerte de Juan el Bautista

14 (T)El rey Herodes se enteró[k] de esto, pues el nombre de Jesús[l] se había hecho célebre, y la gente decía: «Juan el Bautista(U) ha resucitado de entre los muertos, por eso es que estos poderes milagrosos actúan en él». 15 Pero otros decían: «Es Elías». Y decían otros: «Es un profeta, como uno de los profetas antiguos(V)». 16 Al oír esto, Herodes decía: «Juan, a quien yo decapité, ha resucitado». 17 Porque Herodes mismo había enviado a prender a Juan y lo había encadenado en la cárcel por causa de Herodías, mujer de su hermano Felipe(W), pues Herodes se había casado con ella. 18 Y Juan le decía a Herodes: «No te es lícito tener la mujer de tu hermano(X)».

19 Herodías(Y) le tenía rencor y deseaba matarlo, pero no podía, 20 porque Herodes temía a Juan, sabiendo que era un hombre justo y santo(Z), y lo mantenía protegido. Cuando le oía se quedaba muy perplejo, pero le gustaba escucharlo[m].

21 Llegó un día oportuno, cuando Herodes, siendo su cumpleaños, ofreció un banquete(AA) a sus nobles y comandantes[n] y a los principales de Galilea(AB); 22 y cuando la hija de Herodías[o](AC) entró y danzó, agradó a Herodes y a los que se sentaban[p] a la mesa con él; y el rey dijo a la muchacha: «Pídeme lo que quieras y te lo daré».

23 Y le juró: «Te daré lo que me pidas, hasta la mitad de mi reino(AD)». 24 Ella salió y dijo a su madre: «¿Qué pediré?». «La cabeza de Juan el Bautista», le respondió ella. 25 Enseguida ella se presentó apresuradamente ante el rey con su petición[q], diciendo: «Quiero que me des ahora mismo la cabeza de Juan el Bautista en una bandeja».

26 Aunque el rey se puso muy triste, sin embargo a causa de sus juramentos y de los que se sentaban[r] con él a la mesa, no quiso contradecirla. 27 Al instante el rey envió a un verdugo y le ordenó que trajera la cabeza de Juan[s]. Y él fue y lo decapitó en la cárcel, 28 y trajo su cabeza en una bandeja, y se la dio a la muchacha, y la muchacha se la dio a su madre. 29 Cuando los discípulos de Juan oyeron esto, fueron y se llevaron el cuerpo y le dieron sepultura[t].

Alimentación de los cinco mil

30 Los apóstoles(AE) se reunieron* con Jesús, y le informaron sobre todo lo que habían hecho y enseñado(AF). 31 Y Él les dijo*: «Vengan, apártense de los demás a un lugar solitario y descansen un poco». Porque había muchos que iban y venían, y ellos no tenían tiempo ni siquiera para comer(AG). 32 (AH)Y se fueron en la barca a un lugar solitario, apartado(AI). 33 Pero la gente los vio salir, y muchos los reconocieron y juntos corrieron allá a pie de todas las ciudades, y llegaron antes que ellos.

34 Al desembarcar[u], Jesús vio una gran multitud, y tuvo compasión de ellos, porque eran como ovejas sin pastor(AJ); y comenzó a enseñarles muchas cosas. 35 Y cuando ya era muy tarde, Sus discípulos se acercaron a Él, diciendo: «El lugar está desierto y ya es muy tarde; 36 despídelos para que vayan a los campos y aldeas de alrededor, y se compren algo de comer[v]».

37 «Denles ustedes de comer», les contestó Jesús. Y ellos le dijeron*: «¿Quieres que vayamos y compremos 200 denarios[w](AK) de pan y les demos de comer(AL)?». 38 Jesús les dijo*: «¿Cuántos panes tienen ustedes? Vayan y vean». Y cuando se cercioraron le dijeron*: «Cinco panes y dos peces».

39 Y les mandó que todos se recostaran por grupos sobre la hierba verde. 40 Y se recostaron por grupos de cien y de cincuenta. 41 Entonces Él tomó los cinco panes y los dos peces, y levantando los ojos al cielo, los bendijo; partió los panes y los iba dando a los discípulos para que se los sirvieran[x](AM); también repartió los dos peces entre todos.

42 Todos comieron y se saciaron. 43 Recogieron doce cestas llenas de los pedazos(AN), y también de los peces. 44 Los que comieron los panes eran 5,000 hombres(AO).

Jesús anda sobre el mar

45 (AP)Enseguida Jesús hizo que Sus discípulos subieran a la barca(AQ) y fueran delante de Él al otro lado, a Betsaida(AR), mientras Él despedía a la multitud. 46 Después de despedirse de ellos(AS), se fue al monte a orar(AT). 47 Al anochecer, la barca estaba en medio del mar, y Él estaba solo en tierra. 48 Y al verlos remar fatigados, porque el viento les era contrario, como a la cuarta vigilia de la noche(AU)[y], fue* hacia ellos andando sobre el mar, y quería pasarlos de largo.

49 Pero cuando ellos lo vieron andando sobre el mar, pensaron que era un fantasma y se pusieron a gritar; 50 porque todos lo vieron y se turbaron. Pero enseguida Él habló con ellos y les dijo*: «¡Tengan ánimo(AV); soy Yo, no teman(AW)!». 51 Subió con ellos a la barca(AX), y el viento se calmó; y ellos estaban asombrados en gran manera, 52 porque no habían entendido lo de[z] los panes, sino que su mente estaba embotada[aa](AY).

Jesús en Genesaret

53 (AZ)Terminada la travesía, llegaron a tierra en Genesaret, y atracaron en la orilla. 54 Cuando salieron de la barca, la gente enseguida reconoció a Jesús, 55 y recorrieron apresuradamente toda aquella región, y comenzaron a traer a los enfermos en sus camillas adonde oían decir que Él estaba. 56 Dondequiera que Él entraba en aldeas, ciudades o campos, ponían a los enfermos en las plazas, y le rogaban que les permitiera tocar(BA) siquiera el borde de Su manto(BB); y todos los que lo tocaban quedaban curados[ab].

6 Poi uscí di là e venne nella sua patria, e i suoi discepoli lo seguirono.

2 E, venuto il sabato, si mise ad insegnare nella sinagoga. E molti, udendolo, stupivano e dicevano: «Da dove vengono a costui queste cose? Che sapienza è mai questa che gli è data? E come mai si compiono tali potenti opere per mano sua?

3 Non è costui il falegname, il figlio di Maria, il fratello di Giacomo, di Iose, di Giuda e di Simone? E le sue sorelle non sono qui fra noi?». Ed erano scandalizzati a causa di lui.

4 Ma Gesú disse loro: «Nessun profeta è disonorato, se non nella sua patria, fra i suoi parenti e in casa sua».

5 E non potè fare lí alcuna opera potente, salvo che guarire pochi infermi, imponendo loro le mani.

6 E si meravigliava della loro incredulità; e andava in giro per i villaggi, insegnando.

7 Poi egli chiamò a sé i dodici e cominciò a mandarli a due a due; e diede loro potere sugli spiriti immondi.

8 E ordinò loro che non prendessero nulla per il viaggio, eccetto un bastone soltanto: né sacca né pane né denaro nella cintura;

9 e che fossero calzati di sandali e non indossassero due tuniche.

10 Disse loro ancora: «Dovunque entrate in una casa, fermatevi lí, finché non partiate da quel luogo.

11 Se poi alcuni non vi ricevono e non vi ascoltano, andando via di là, scuotete la polvere dai vostri piedi in testimonianza contro di loro. In verità vi dico che nel giorno del giudizio Sodoma e Gomorra saranno trattate con piú tolleranza che quella città».

12 Cosí partiti, predicavano che la gente si doveva ravvedere;

13 e scacciavano molti demoni e ungevano con olio molti infermi, e li guarivano.

14 Ora il re Erode sentí parlare di Gesú, perché il suo nome era diventato celebre, e diceva: «Quel Giovanni che battezzava è risuscitato dai morti; e perciò le potenze miracolose operano in lui».

15 Altri dicevano: «E' Elia»; ed altri: «E' un profeta, o come uno dei profeti».

16 Ma Erode, udito questo, diceva: «Quel Giovanni, che io ho fatto decapitare, è risorto dai morti!».

17 Erode stesso infatti aveva fatto arrestare Giovanni e l'aveva tenuto legato in carcere a causa di Erodiade, moglie di Filippo suo fratello, perché egli l'aveva presa per moglie.

18 Giovanni infatti diceva ad Erode: «Non ti è lecito di avere la moglie di tuo fratello».

19 Ed Erodiade gli portava rancore e volentieri l'avrebbe fatto uccidere, ma non poteva.

20 Erode infatti temeva Giovanni, sapendolo uomo giusto e santo, e lo proteggeva; e, dopo averlo udito, faceva molte cose e lo ascoltava volentieri.

21 Ora, venuto un giorno propizio, Erode per il suo compleanno offrí un banchetto ai suoi grandi, ai comandanti e ai notabili della Galilea.

22 La figlia di Erodiade stessa entrò e danzò, e piacque ad Erode e a coloro che erano a tavola con lui; allora il re disse alla fanciulla: «Domandami tutto ciò che vuoi e io te lo darò».

23 E le giurò: «Qualsiasi cosa mi chiederai, te la darò, fino alla metà del mio regno!».

24 Ella uscí, e disse a sua madre: «Che cosa devo chiedere?». Quella rispose: «La testa di Giovanni Battista».

25 Ed ella, ritornata subito dal re, gli fece in fretta la richiesta, dicendo: «Io desidero che tu mi dia immediatamente, su un piatto, la testa di Giovanni Battista».

26 E il re, sebbene ne fosse molto rattristato, a motivo del giuramento e per rispetto dei convitati, non volle opporle un rifiuto.

27 Cosí il re mandò subito una guardia, con l'ordine di portargli la testa di Giovanni.

28 E quegli andò, lo decapitò in prigione e portò la sua testa su un piatto e la diede alla fanciulla, e la fanciulla la diede a sua madre.

29 E quando i suoi discepoli udirono ciò, vennero, presero il suo corpo e lo posero in un sepolcro.

30 Ora gli apostoli si radunarono intorno a Gesú, e gli riferirono tutto quello che avevano fatto ed insegnato.

31 Ed egli disse loro: «Venite in disparte in un luogo solitario e riposatevi un po'». Poichè era tanta la gente che andava e veniva, che essi non avevano neppure il tempo di mangiare.

32 Partirono quindi in barca verso un luogo solitario e appartato.

33 La folla però li vide partire, e molti lo riconobbero, e da tutte le città accorsero là a piedi ed arrivarono prima di loro, e si strinsero intorno a lui.

34 E Gesú, sbarcato, vide una grande folla e ne ebbe compassione, perché erano come pecore senza pastore, e prese a insegnare loro molte cose.

35 Ed essendo già tardi, i suoi discepoli gli si avvicinarono e gli dissero: «Questo luogo è deserto, ed è già tardi.

36 Licenzia questa gente perché se ne vada nelle campagne e nei villaggi all'intorno a comprarsi del pane, perché non ha nulla da mangiare».

37 Ma egli, rispondendo, disse loro: «Date voi a loro da mangiare». Ed essi gli dissero: «Dobbiamo andare noi a comperare del pane per duecento denari e dare loro da mangiare?».

38 Ed egli disse loro: «Quanti pani avete? Andate a vedere». Ed essi, accertatisi, dissero: «Cinque pani e due pesci».

39 Allora egli ordinò loro di farli accomodare tutti, per gruppi, sull'erba verde.

40 Cosí essi si sedettero in gruppi di cento e di cinquanta.

41 Poi egli prese i cinque pani e i due pesci e, alzati gli occhi al cielo, li benedisse, quindi spezzò i pani e li diede ai suoi discepoli, perché li distribuissero loro; e divise pure i due pesci fra tutti.

42 Mangiarono tutti a sazietà.

43 E raccolsero dodici ceste piene di pezzi di pane e di resti dei pesci.

44 Or coloro che avevano mangiato di quei pani erano cinquemila uomini.

45 Subito dopo Gesú costrinse i suoi discepoli a salire nella barca e precederlo all'altra riva verso Betsaida, mentre egli licenziava la folla.

46 Appena l'ebbe congedata, salí sul monte a pregare.

47 Fattosi sera, la barca era in mezzo al mare ed egli era a terra tutto solo.

48 E, vedendo i discepoli affaticarsi a remare, perché avevano il vento contrario, verso la quarta vigilia della notte, egli andò verso loro camminando sul mare, e voleva oltrepassarli.

49 Ma essi, vedendolo camminare sul mare, pensavano che fosse un fantasma e si misero a gridare

50 perché lo avevano visto tutti e si erano spaventati, ma egli subito parlò loro e disse: «Fatevi animo, sono io, non temete!».

51 Poi salí con loro sulla barca e il vento si calmò, ed essi erano enormemente stupiti in se stessi e si meravigliarono,

52 perché non avevano capito il fatto dei pani, essendo il loro cuore indurito.

53 Compiuta la traversata, giunsero nella contrada di Gennesaret e vi approdarono.

54 E, scesi dalla barca, subito la gente lo riconobbe;

55 e, percorrendo per tutta quella regione all'intorno, incominciò a portare i malati sui lettucci, ovunque sentiva che si trovasse

56 e dovunque egli giungeva, in villaggi, città o borgate, la gente metteva gli infermi sulle piazze e lo pregava di poter toccare almeno il lembo del suo vestito, e tutti quelli che lo toccavano erano guariti.

A Prophet Without Honor(A)

6 Jesus left there and went to his hometown,(B) accompanied by his disciples. 2 When the Sabbath came,(C) he began to teach in the synagogue,(D) and many who heard him were amazed.(E)

“Where did this man get these things?” they asked. “What’s this wisdom that has been given him? What are these remarkable miracles he is performing? 3 Isn’t this the carpenter? Isn’t this Mary’s son and the brother of James, Joseph,[a] Judas and Simon?(F) Aren’t his sisters here with us?” And they took offense at him.(G)

4 Jesus said to them, “A prophet is not without honor except in his own town, among his relatives and in his own home.”(H) 5 He could not do any miracles there, except lay his hands on(I) a few sick people and heal them. 6 He was amazed at their lack of faith.

Jesus Sends Out the Twelve(J)

Then Jesus went around teaching from village to village.(K) 7 Calling the Twelve to him,(L) he began to send them out two by two(M) and gave them authority over impure spirits.(N)

8 These were his instructions: “Take nothing for the journey except a staff—no bread, no bag, no money in your belts. 9 Wear sandals but not an extra shirt. 10 Whenever you enter a house, stay there until you leave that town. 11 And if any place will not welcome you or listen to you, leave that place and shake the dust off your feet(O) as a testimony against them.”

12 They went out and preached that people should repent.(P) 13 They drove out many demons and anointed many sick people with oil(Q) and healed them.

John the Baptist Beheaded(R)(S)

14 King Herod heard about this, for Jesus’ name had become well known. Some were saying,[b] “John the Baptist(T) has been raised from the dead, and that is why miraculous powers are at work in him.”

15 Others said, “He is Elijah.”(U)

And still others claimed, “He is a prophet,(V) like one of the prophets of long ago.”(W)

16 But when Herod heard this, he said, “John, whom I beheaded, has been raised from the dead!”

17 For Herod himself had given orders to have John arrested, and he had him bound and put in prison.(X) He did this because of Herodias, his brother Philip’s wife, whom he had married. 18 For John had been saying to Herod, “It is not lawful for you to have your brother’s wife.”(Y) 19 So Herodias nursed a grudge against John and wanted to kill him. But she was not able to, 20 because Herod feared John and protected him, knowing him to be a righteous and holy man.(Z) When Herod heard John, he was greatly puzzled[c]; yet he liked to listen to him.

21 Finally the opportune time came. On his birthday Herod gave a banquet(AA) for his high officials and military commanders and the leading men of Galilee.(AB) 22 When the daughter of[d] Herodias came in and danced, she pleased Herod and his dinner guests.

The king said to the girl, “Ask me for anything you want, and I’ll give it to you.” 23 And he promised her with an oath, “Whatever you ask I will give you, up to half my kingdom.”(AC)

24 She went out and said to her mother, “What shall I ask for?”

“The head of John the Baptist,” she answered.

25 At once the girl hurried in to the king with the request: “I want you to give me right now the head of John the Baptist on a platter.”

26 The king was greatly distressed, but because of his oaths and his dinner guests, he did not want to refuse her. 27 So he immediately sent an executioner with orders to bring John’s head. The man went, beheaded John in the prison, 28 and brought back his head on a platter. He presented it to the girl, and she gave it to her mother. 29 On hearing of this, John’s disciples came and took his body and laid it in a tomb.

Jesus Feeds the Five Thousand(AD)(AE)

30 The apostles(AF) gathered around Jesus and reported to him all they had done and taught.(AG) 31 Then, because so many people were coming and going that they did not even have a chance to eat,(AH) he said to them, “Come with me by yourselves to a quiet place and get some rest.”

32 So they went away by themselves in a boat(AI) to a solitary place. 33 But many who saw them leaving recognized them and ran on foot from all the towns and got there ahead of them. 34 When Jesus landed and saw a large crowd, he had compassion on them, because they were like sheep without a shepherd.(AJ) So he began teaching them many things.

35 By this time it was late in the day, so his disciples came to him. “This is a remote place,” they said, “and it’s already very late. 36 Send the people away so that they can go to the surrounding countryside and villages and buy themselves something to eat.”

37 But he answered, “You give them something to eat.”(AK)

They said to him, “That would take more than half a year’s wages[e]! Are we to go and spend that much on bread and give it to them to eat?”

38 “How many loaves do you have?” he asked. “Go and see.”

When they found out, they said, “Five—and two fish.”(AL)

39 Then Jesus directed them to have all the people sit down in groups on the green grass. 40 So they sat down in groups of hundreds and fifties. 41 Taking the five loaves and the two fish and looking up to heaven, he gave thanks and broke the loaves.(AM) Then he gave them to his disciples to distribute to the people. He also divided the two fish among them all. 42 They all ate and were satisfied, 43 and the disciples picked up twelve basketfuls of broken pieces of bread and fish. 44 The number of the men who had eaten was five thousand.

Jesus Walks on the Water(AN)(AO)

45 Immediately Jesus made his disciples get into the boat(AP) and go on ahead of him to Bethsaida,(AQ) while he dismissed the crowd. 46 After leaving them, he went up on a mountainside to pray.(AR)

47 Later that night, the boat was in the middle of the lake, and he was alone on land. 48 He saw the disciples straining at the oars, because the wind was against them. Shortly before dawn he went out to them, walking on the lake. He was about to pass by them, 49 but when they saw him walking on the lake, they thought he was a ghost.(AS) They cried out, 50 because they all saw him and were terrified.

Immediately he spoke to them and said, “Take courage! It is I. Don’t be afraid.”(AT) 51 Then he climbed into the boat(AU) with them, and the wind died down.(AV) They were completely amazed, 52 for they had not understood about the loaves; their hearts were hardened.(AW)

53 When they had crossed over, they landed at Gennesaret and anchored there.(AX) 54 As soon as they got out of the boat, people recognized Jesus. 55 They ran throughout that whole region and carried the sick on mats to wherever they heard he was. 56 And wherever he went—into villages, towns or countryside—they placed the sick in the marketplaces. They begged him to let them touch even the edge of his cloak,(AY) and all who touched it were healed.

And many hearing Him were (C)astonished, saying, (D)“Where did this Man get these things? And what wisdom is this which is given to Him, that such mighty works are performed by His hands! 3 Is this not the carpenter, the Son of Mary, and (E)brother of James, Joses, Judas, and Simon? And are not His sisters here with us?” So they (F)were offended at Him.

4 But Jesus said to them, (G)“A prophet is not without honor except in his own country, among his own relatives, and in his own house.” 5 (H)Now He could do no mighty work there, except that He laid His hands on a few sick people and healed them. 6 And (I)He marveled because of their unbelief. (J)Then He went about the villages in a circuit, teaching.

Sending Out the Twelve(K)

7 (L)And He called the twelve to Himself, and began to send them out (M)two by two, and gave them power over unclean spirits. 8 He commanded them to take nothing for the journey except a staff—no bag, no bread, no copper in their money belts— 9 but (N)to wear sandals, and not to put on two tunics.

10 (O)Also He said to them, “In whatever place you enter a house, stay there till you depart from that place. 11 (P)And [a]whoever will not receive you nor hear you, when you depart from there, (Q)shake off the dust under your feet as a testimony against them. [b]Assuredly, I say to you, it will be more tolerable for Sodom and Gomorrah in the day of judgment than for that city!”

12 So they went out and preached that people should repent. 13 And they cast out many demons, (R)and anointed with oil many who were sick, and healed them.

John the Baptist Beheaded(S)

14 (T)Now King Herod heard of Him, for His name had become well known. And he said, “John the Baptist is risen from the dead, and therefore (U)these powers are at work in him.”

15 (V)Others said, “It is Elijah.”

And others said, “It is [c]the Prophet, (W)or like one of the prophets.”

16 (X)But when Herod heard, he said, “This is John, whom I beheaded; he has been raised from the dead!” 17 For Herod himself had sent and laid hold of John, and bound him in prison for the sake of Herodias, his brother Philip’s wife; for he had married her. 18 Because John had said to Herod, (Y)“It is not lawful for you to have your brother’s wife.”

19 Therefore Herodias [d]held it against him and wanted to kill him, but she could not; 20 for Herod (Z)feared John, knowing that he was a just and holy man, and he protected him. And when he heard him, he [e]did many things, and heard him gladly.

21 (AA)Then an opportune day came when Herod (AB)on his birthday gave a feast for his nobles, the high officers, and the chief men of Galilee. 22 And when Herodias’ daughter herself came in and danced, and pleased Herod and those who sat with him, the king said to the girl, “Ask me whatever you want, and I will give it to you.” 23 He also swore to her, (AC)“Whatever you ask me, I will give you, up to half my kingdom.”

24 So she went out and said to her mother, “What shall I ask?”

And she said, “The head of John the Baptist!”

25 Immediately she came in with haste to the king and asked, saying, “I want you to give me at once the head of John the Baptist on a platter.”

26 (AD)And the king was exceedingly sorry; yet, because of the oaths and because of those who sat with him, he did not want to refuse her. 27 Immediately the king sent an executioner and commanded his head to be brought. And he went and beheaded him in prison, 28 brought his head on a platter, and gave it to the girl; and the girl gave it to her mother. 29 When his disciples heard of it, they came and (AE)took away his corpse and laid it in a tomb.

Feeding the Five Thousand(AF)

30 (AG)Then the apostles gathered to Jesus and told Him all things, both what they had done and what they had taught. 31 (AH)And He said to them, “Come aside by yourselves to a deserted place and rest a while.” For (AI)there were many coming and going, and they did not even have time to eat. 32 (AJ)So they departed to a deserted place in the boat by themselves.

33 But [f]the multitudes saw them departing, and many (AK)knew Him and ran there on foot from all the cities. They arrived before them and came together to Him. 34 (AL)And Jesus, when He came out, saw a great multitude and was moved with compassion for them, because they were like (AM)sheep not having a shepherd. So (AN)He began to teach them many things. 35 (AO)When the day was now far spent, His disciples came to Him and said, “This is a deserted place, and already the hour is late. 36 Send them away, that they may go into the surrounding country and villages and buy themselves [g]bread; for they have nothing to eat.”

37 But He answered and said to them, “You give them something to eat.”

And they said to Him, (AP)“Shall we go and buy two hundred denarii worth of bread and give them something to eat?”

38 But He said to them, “How many loaves do you have? Go and see.”

And when they found out they said, (AQ)“Five, and two fish.”

39 Then He (AR)commanded them to make them all sit down in groups on the green grass. 40 So they sat down in ranks, in hundreds and in fifties. 41 And when He had taken the five loaves and the two fish, He (AS)looked up to heaven, (AT)blessed and broke the loaves, and gave them to His disciples to set before them; and the two fish He divided among them all. 42 So they all ate and were filled. 43 And they took up twelve baskets full of fragments and of the fish. 44 Now those who had eaten the loaves were [h]about five thousand men.

Jesus Walks on the Sea(AU)

45 (AV)Immediately He [i]made His disciples get into the boat and go before Him to the other side, to Bethsaida, while He sent the multitude away. 46 And when He had sent them away, He (AW)departed to the mountain to pray. 47 Now when evening came, the boat was in the middle of the sea; and He was alone on the land. 48 Then He saw them straining at rowing, for the wind was against them. Now about the fourth watch of the night He came to them, walking on the sea, and (AX)would have passed them by. 49 And when they saw Him walking on the sea, they supposed it was a (AY)ghost, and cried out; 50 for they all saw Him and were troubled. But immediately He talked with them and said to them, (AZ)“Be[j] of good cheer! It is I; do not be (BA)afraid.” 51 Then He went up into the boat to them, and the wind (BB)ceased. And they were greatly (BC)amazed in themselves beyond measure, and marveled. 52 For (BD)they had not understood about the loaves, because their (BE)heart was hardened.

Many Touch Him and Are Made Well(BF)

53 (BG)When they had crossed over, they came to the land of Gennesaret and anchored there. 54 And when they came out of the boat, immediately [k]the people recognized Him, 55 ran through that whole surrounding region, and began to carry about on beds those who were sick to wherever they heard He was. 56 Wherever He entered, into villages, cities, or the country, they laid the sick in the marketplaces, and begged Him that (BH)they might just touch the (BI)hem of His garment. And as many as touched Him were made well.
