Um profeta sem honra
(Mt 13.54-58; Lc 4.16-30)
6 Logo depois disto, Jesus saiu daquela parte do país e voltou com os discípulos para a sua terra. 2 No sábado seguinte, foi à sinagoga e começou a ensinar. Ao ouvirem-no, muitos ficaram admirados com a sua sabedoria e milagres. E diziam: “De onde lhe veio toda esta sabedoria? Como pode realizar tais milagres com as próprias mãos? 3 Não é ele o carpinteiro, filho de Maria? Não é irmão de Tiago, José, Judas e Simão? E as suas irmãs não moram aqui mesmo, nesta localidade?” E estavam escandalizados com ele. 4 Então Jesus disse-lhes: “Um profeta é honrado em qualquer lugar menos na sua terra, entre o seus parentes e no meio da própria casa.” 5 Por não acreditarem nele, Jesus não pôde fazer ali nenhum grande milagre, a não ser colocar as mãos sobre alguns doentes e curá-los. 6 Jesus estava admirado por causa da falta de fé deles.
Jesus envia os doze discípulos
(Mt 10.1, 9-14; Lc 9.1-6)
E andava pelas aldeias em redor a ensinar. 7 Chamou os doze discípulos, começou a enviá-los dois a dois e deu-lhes autoridade sobre os espíritos impuros. 8 Disse-lhes: “Nada levem convosco a não ser o bordão; nem comida, nem saco de viagem, nem dinheiro de cobre à cintura; 9 sandálias, só as que tiverem nos pés, e nem mesmo uma muda de roupa.” 10 E acrescentou: “Sempre que entrarem numa casa, fiquem nela até à vossa partida. 11 Se uma qualquer localidade não vos receber nem ouvir, sacudam a poeira dos vossos pés, quando saírem, como testemunho de que abandonaram essa terra à sua própria sorte.”
12 Então os discípulos partiram, incitando todos os que encontravam a abandonarem o pecado. 13 Expulsaram muitos demónios e curaram muitos doentes, ungindo-os com azeite.
João Batista é degolado
(Mt 14.1-12; Lc 9.7-9)
14 Não tardou que o rei Herodes ouvisse falar de Jesus, cujos milagres eram contados com espanto em toda a parte. Algumas pessoas declaravam que era João Batista que tinha voltado à vida. Por isso, diziam: “Não admira que possa fazer tais milagres!”
15 Havia gente também que pensava que Jesus fosse Elias; outros, ainda, afirmavam que era um novo profeta igual aos do passado. 16 Herodes, ao tomar conhecimento destes factos, disse: “Não! É João, a quem degolei. Ressuscitou dentre os mortos!”
17-19 Porque Herodes mandara soldados meter João no cárcere, por andar sempre a dizer que não estava certo este casar-se com Herodíade, mulher de Filipe, irmão do próprio rei. Para se vingar, Herodíade queria que João fosse morto; mas sem a aprovação de Herodes nada podia fazer. 20 Porque Herodes respeitava João, sabendo que era um homem justo e santo e protegia-o. Sempre que falava com João, Herodes ficava preocupado, mas gostava de ouvi-lo.
21 Até que, por fim, chegou a oportunidade que Herodíade esperava. Herodes fazia anos e dera uma festa para a gente do palácio, para os oficiais do exército e para as pessoas importantes da Galileia. 22 A certa altura, entrou a filha de Herodíade que dançou na presença dos convidados e agradou a todos. 23 “Pede-me o que quiseres”, prometeu o rei, “que eu dou-te nem que seja metade do meu reino.”
24 Ouvindo isto, ela saiu para se aconselhar junto da mãe, que lhe disse: “Pede-lhe a cabeça de João Batista!”
25 Então voltou à presença do rei: “Dá-me a cabeça de João Batista numa bandeja!”
26 O rei ficou muito triste com o pedido, mas teve vergonha de quebrar o juramento diante dos convidados. 27 Mandou então um membro da sua guarda pessoal à prisão cortar a cabeça de João e trazê-la. O soldado matou João no cárcere 28 e trouxe a sua cabeça numa bandeja, entregando-a à jovem, que a levou à mãe. 29 Quando os discípulos de João souberam o que tinha acontecido, foram buscar o corpo e sepultaram-no num túmulo.
Jesus alimenta 5000 homens
(Mt 14.13-21; Lc 9.10-17; Jo 6.1-13)
30 Por fim, os apóstolos voltaram da sua viagem. Foram ter com Jesus e contaram-lhe tudo o que tinham feito e como tinham falado às populações visitadas.
31 Jesus disse-lhes: “Saiamos por um pouco do meio do povo para descansar.” Pois era tanta a gente que ia e vinha que mal tinham tempo para comer. 32 E saíram de barco para um sítio mais sossegado. 33 Contudo, muitos aperceberam-se disso e, correndo pela praia, foram esperá-los no ponto de desembarque. 34 Quando Jesus saiu do barco, já lá se encontrava uma enorme multidão; teve compaixão deles, porque eram como ovelhas sem pastor e ensinou-lhes muitas coisas que precisavam de saber.
35 Como a hora já fosse bastante avançada, os discípulos foram ter com Jesus e disseram: 36 “Este lugar é deserto e a hora já vai avançada. Manda o povo retirar-se, para ir às aldeias e campos dos arredores comprar alguma coisa para comer.”
37 Jesus respondeu: “Deem-lhes vocês de comer.” Responderam: “Como? Seria preciso duzentas moedas de prata[a] para comprar comida para tanta gente!”
38 “Quanta comida temos? Vão ver.” Eles voltaram, dizendo que havia cinco pães e dois peixes. 39 Então Jesus disse à multidão que se sentasse. E sentaram-se, na erva verde, 40 em grupos de cinquenta ou cem. 41 E tomando os cinco pães e os dois peixes, Jesus ergueu os olhos para o céu e abençoou-os. Depois, partiu os pães em pedaços e deu-os aos discípulos, para que os oferecessem ao povo. E distribuiu também os dois peixes entre todos. 42 Todos comeram até ficarem satisfeitos. 43 E quando os sobejos foram recolhidos, as sobras dos peixes enchiam doze cestos. 44 O número de homens que comeu foi de 5000.
Jesus anda sobre as águas
45 Logo a seguir, Jesus mandou os discípulos voltar para o barco e partir à sua frente, atravessando o lago até Betsaida, enquanto ele tratava de mandar a multidão embora. 46 Depois disto, Jesus subiu à montanha para orar.
47 Caiu a noite, o barco já estava no meio do lago e ele ainda se encontrava sozinho em terra. 48 Jesus viu que remavam com dificuldades, pois o vento soprava em sentido contrário. Por volta das quatro horas da madrugada, foi ter com eles, a caminhar sobre a água, e ia passar-lhes adiante. 49 Ao verem-no caminhar sobre a água, gritaram de terror, pensando que fosse um fantasma. 50 Todos o viam e ficaram inquietos. Imediatamente ele lhes disse: “Está tudo bem, sou eu, não tenham medo!” 51 Então subiu para o barco e o vento cessou.
Os discípulos ficaram ali sentados, de boca aberta, sem compreender o que se passara. 52 Porque ainda não tinham percebido quem Jesus realmente era, nem mesmo depois do milagre da tarde anterior. Os seus corações estavam endurecidos.
53 Quando chegaram a Genezaré, do outro lado do lago, amarraram o barco. 54 Mal desembarcaram, os habitantes reconheceram-no logo. 55 Percorriam toda a região, começando a trazer-lhe os doentes em esteiras e padiolas. 56 Aonde quer que fosse, aldeias, cidades e campo, punham os doentes nas praças e ruas, pedindo que os deixasse ao menos tocar na borda da sua roupa. E todos os que lhe tocavam ficavam curados.

A Prophet Without Honor(A)
6 Jesus left there and went to his hometown,(B) accompanied by his disciples. 2 When the Sabbath came,(C) he began to teach in the synagogue,(D) and many who heard him were amazed.(E)
“Where did this man get these things?” they asked. “What’s this wisdom that has been given him? What are these remarkable miracles he is performing? 3 Isn’t this the carpenter? Isn’t this Mary’s son and the brother of James, Joseph,[a] Judas and Simon?(F) Aren’t his sisters here with us?” And they took offense at him.(G)
4 Jesus said to them, “A prophet is not without honor except in his own town, among his relatives and in his own home.”(H) 5 He could not do any miracles there, except lay his hands on(I) a few sick people and heal them. 6 He was amazed at their lack of faith.
Jesus Sends Out the Twelve(J)
Then Jesus went around teaching from village to village.(K) 7 Calling the Twelve to him,(L) he began to send them out two by two(M) and gave them authority over impure spirits.(N)
8 These were his instructions: “Take nothing for the journey except a staff—no bread, no bag, no money in your belts. 9 Wear sandals but not an extra shirt. 10 Whenever you enter a house, stay there until you leave that town. 11 And if any place will not welcome you or listen to you, leave that place and shake the dust off your feet(O) as a testimony against them.”
12 They went out and preached that people should repent.(P) 13 They drove out many demons and anointed many sick people with oil(Q) and healed them.
John the Baptist Beheaded(R)(S)
14 King Herod heard about this, for Jesus’ name had become well known. Some were saying,[b] “John the Baptist(T) has been raised from the dead, and that is why miraculous powers are at work in him.”
15 Others said, “He is Elijah.”(U)
And still others claimed, “He is a prophet,(V) like one of the prophets of long ago.”(W)
16 But when Herod heard this, he said, “John, whom I beheaded, has been raised from the dead!”
17 For Herod himself had given orders to have John arrested, and he had him bound and put in prison.(X) He did this because of Herodias, his brother Philip’s wife, whom he had married. 18 For John had been saying to Herod, “It is not lawful for you to have your brother’s wife.”(Y) 19 So Herodias nursed a grudge against John and wanted to kill him. But she was not able to, 20 because Herod feared John and protected him, knowing him to be a righteous and holy man.(Z) When Herod heard John, he was greatly puzzled[c]; yet he liked to listen to him.
21 Finally the opportune time came. On his birthday Herod gave a banquet(AA) for his high officials and military commanders and the leading men of Galilee.(AB) 22 When the daughter of[d] Herodias came in and danced, she pleased Herod and his dinner guests.
The king said to the girl, “Ask me for anything you want, and I’ll give it to you.” 23 And he promised her with an oath, “Whatever you ask I will give you, up to half my kingdom.”(AC)
24 She went out and said to her mother, “What shall I ask for?”
“The head of John the Baptist,” she answered.
25 At once the girl hurried in to the king with the request: “I want you to give me right now the head of John the Baptist on a platter.”
26 The king was greatly distressed, but because of his oaths and his dinner guests, he did not want to refuse her. 27 So he immediately sent an executioner with orders to bring John’s head. The man went, beheaded John in the prison, 28 and brought back his head on a platter. He presented it to the girl, and she gave it to her mother. 29 On hearing of this, John’s disciples came and took his body and laid it in a tomb.
Jesus Feeds the Five Thousand(AD)(AE)
30 The apostles(AF) gathered around Jesus and reported to him all they had done and taught.(AG) 31 Then, because so many people were coming and going that they did not even have a chance to eat,(AH) he said to them, “Come with me by yourselves to a quiet place and get some rest.”
32 So they went away by themselves in a boat(AI) to a solitary place. 33 But many who saw them leaving recognized them and ran on foot from all the towns and got there ahead of them. 34 When Jesus landed and saw a large crowd, he had compassion on them, because they were like sheep without a shepherd.(AJ) So he began teaching them many things.
35 By this time it was late in the day, so his disciples came to him. “This is a remote place,” they said, “and it’s already very late. 36 Send the people away so that they can go to the surrounding countryside and villages and buy themselves something to eat.”
37 But he answered, “You give them something to eat.”(AK)
They said to him, “That would take more than half a year’s wages[e]! Are we to go and spend that much on bread and give it to them to eat?”
38 “How many loaves do you have?” he asked. “Go and see.”
When they found out, they said, “Five—and two fish.”(AL)
39 Then Jesus directed them to have all the people sit down in groups on the green grass. 40 So they sat down in groups of hundreds and fifties. 41 Taking the five loaves and the two fish and looking up to heaven, he gave thanks and broke the loaves.(AM) Then he gave them to his disciples to distribute to the people. He also divided the two fish among them all. 42 They all ate and were satisfied, 43 and the disciples picked up twelve basketfuls of broken pieces of bread and fish. 44 The number of the men who had eaten was five thousand.
Jesus Walks on the Water(AN)(AO)
45 Immediately Jesus made his disciples get into the boat(AP) and go on ahead of him to Bethsaida,(AQ) while he dismissed the crowd. 46 After leaving them, he went up on a mountainside to pray.(AR)
47 Later that night, the boat was in the middle of the lake, and he was alone on land. 48 He saw the disciples straining at the oars, because the wind was against them. Shortly before dawn he went out to them, walking on the lake. He was about to pass by them, 49 but when they saw him walking on the lake, they thought he was a ghost.(AS) They cried out, 50 because they all saw him and were terrified.
Immediately he spoke to them and said, “Take courage! It is I. Don’t be afraid.”(AT) 51 Then he climbed into the boat(AU) with them, and the wind died down.(AV) They were completely amazed, 52 for they had not understood about the loaves; their hearts were hardened.(AW)
53 When they had crossed over, they landed at Gennesaret and anchored there.(AX) 54 As soon as they got out of the boat, people recognized Jesus. 55 They ran throughout that whole region and carried the sick on mats to wherever they heard he was. 56 And wherever he went—into villages, towns or countryside—they placed the sick in the marketplaces. They begged him to let them touch even the edge of his cloak,(AY) and all who touched it were healed.

6 Jésus partit de là, et se rendit dans sa patrie. Ses disciples le suivirent.
2 Quand le sabbat fut venu, il se mit à enseigner dans la synagogue. Beaucoup de gens qui l'entendirent étaient étonnés et disaient: D'où lui viennent ces choses? Quelle est cette sagesse qui lui a été donnée, et comment de tels miracles se font-ils par ses mains?
3 N'est-ce pas le charpentier, le fils de Marie, le frère de Jacques, de Joses, de Jude et de Simon? et ses soeurs ne sont-elles pas ici parmi nous? Et il était pour eux une occasion de chute.
4 Mais Jésus leur dit: Un prophète n'est méprisé que dans sa patrie, parmi ses parents, et dans sa maison.
5 Il ne put faire là aucun miracle, si ce n'est qu'il imposa les mains à quelques malades et les guérit.
6 Et il s'étonnait de leur incrédulité. Jésus parcourait les villages d'alentour, en enseignant.
7 Alors il appela les douze, et il commença à les envoyer deux à deux, en leur donnant pouvoir sur les esprits impurs.
8 Il leur prescrivit de ne rien prendre pour le voyage, si ce n'est un bâton; de n'avoir ni pain, ni sac, ni monnaie dans la ceinture;
9 de chausser des sandales, et de ne pas revêtir deux tuniques.
10 Puis il leur dit: Dans quelque maison que vous entriez, restez-y jusqu'à ce que vous partiez de ce lieu.
11 Et, s'il y a quelque part des gens qui ne vous reçoivent ni ne vous écoutent, retirez-vous de là, et secouez la poussière de vos pieds, afin que cela leur serve de témoignage.
12 Ils partirent, et ils prêchèrent la repentance.
13 Ils chassaient beaucoup de démons, et ils oignaient d'huile beaucoup de malades et les guérissaient.
14 Le roi Hérode entendit parler de Jésus, dont le nom était devenu célèbre, et il dit: Jean Baptiste est ressuscité des morts, et c'est pour cela qu'il se fait par lui des miracles.
15 D'autres disaient: C'est Élie. Et d'autres disaient: C'est un prophète comme l'un des prophètes.
16 Mais Hérode, en apprenant cela, disait: Ce Jean que j'ai fait décapiter, c'est lui qui est ressuscité.
17 Car Hérode lui-même avait fait arrêter Jean, et l'avait fait lier en prison, à cause d'Hérodias, femme de Philippe, son frère, parce qu'il l'avait épousée,
18 et que Jean lui disait: Il ne t'est pas permis d'avoir la femme de ton frère.
19 Hérodias était irritée contre Jean, et voulait le faire mourir.
20 Mais elle ne le pouvait; car Hérode craignait Jean, le connaissant pour un homme juste et saint; il le protégeait, et, après l'avoir entendu, il était souvent perplexe, et l'écoutait avec plaisir.
21 Cependant, un jour propice arriva, lorsque Hérode, à l'anniversaire de sa naissance, donna un festin à ses grands, aux chefs militaires et aux principaux de la Galilée.
22 La fille d'Hérodias entra dans la salle; elle dansa, et plut à Hérode et à ses convives. Le roi dit à la jeune fille: Demande-moi ce que tu voudras, et je te le donnerai.
23 Il ajouta avec serment: Ce que tu me demanderas, je te le donnerai, fût-ce la moitié de mon royaume.
24 Étant sortie, elle dit à sa mère: Que demanderais-je? Et sa mère répondit: La tête de Jean Baptiste.
25 Elle s'empressa de rentrer aussitôt vers le roi, et lui fit cette demande: Je veux que tu me donnes à l'instant, sur un plat, la tête de Jean Baptiste.
26 Le roi fut attristé; mais, à cause de ses serments et des convives, il ne voulut pas lui faire un refus.
27 Il envoya sur-le-champ un garde, avec ordre d'apporter la tête de Jean Baptiste.
28 Le garde alla décapiter Jean dans la prison, et apporta la tête sur un plat. Il la donna à la jeune fille, et la jeune fille la donna à sa mère.
29 Les disciples de Jean, ayant appris cela, vinrent prendre son corps, et le mirent dans un sépulcre.
30 Les apôtres, s'étant rassemblés auprès de Jésus, lui racontèrent tout ce qu'ils avaient fait et tout ce qu'ils avaient enseigné.
31 Jésus leur dit: Venez à l'écart dans un lieu désert, et reposez-vous un peu. Car il y avait beaucoup d'allants et de venants, et ils n'avaient même pas le temps de manger.
32 Ils partirent donc dans une barque, pour aller à l'écart dans un lieu désert.
33 Beaucoup de gens les virent s'en aller et les reconnurent, et de toutes les villes on accourut à pied et on les devança au lieu où ils se rendaient.
34 Quand il sortit de la barque, Jésus vit une grande foule, et fut ému de compassion pour eux, parce qu'ils étaient comme des brebis qui n'ont point de berger; et il se mit à leur enseigner beaucoup de choses.
35 Comme l'heure était déjà avancée, ses disciples s'approchèrent de lui, et dirent: Ce lieu est désert, et l'heure est déjà avancée;
36 renvoie-les, afin qu'ils aillent dans les campagnes et dans les villages des environs, pour s'acheter de quoi manger.
37 Jésus leur répondit: Donnez-leur vous-mêmes à manger. Mais ils lui dirent: Irions-nous acheter des pains pour deux cents deniers, et leur donnerions-nous à manger?
38 Et il leur dit: Combien avez-vous de pains? Allez voir. Ils s'en assurèrent, et répondirent: Cinq, et deux poissons.
39 Alors il leur commanda de les faire tous asseoir par groupes sur l'herbe verte,
40 et ils s'assirent par rangées de cent et de cinquante.
41 Il prit les cinq pains et les deux poissons et, levant les yeux vers le ciel, il rendit grâces. Puis, il rompit les pains, et les donna aux disciples, afin qu'ils les distribuassent à la foule. Il partagea aussi les deux poissons entre tous.
42 Tous mangèrent et furent rassasiés,
43 et l'on emporta douze paniers pleins de morceaux de pain et de ce qui restait des poissons.
44 Ceux qui avaient mangé les pains étaient cinq mille hommes.
45 Aussitôt après, il obligea ses disciples à monter dans la barque et à passer avant lui de l'autre côté, vers Bethsaïda, pendant que lui-même renverrait la foule.
46 Quand il l'eut renvoyée, il s'en alla sur la montagne, pour prier.
47 Le soir étant venu, la barque était au milieu de la mer, et Jésus était seul à terre.
48 Il vit qu'ils avaient beaucoup de peine à ramer; car le vent leur était contraire. A la quatrième veille de la nuit environ, il alla vers eux, marchant sur la mer, et il voulait les dépasser.
49 Quand ils le virent marcher sur la mer, ils crurent que c'étaient un fantôme, et ils poussèrent des cris;
50 car ils le voyaient tous, et ils étaient troublés. Aussitôt Jésus leur parla, et leur dit: Rassurez-vous, c'est moi, n'ayez pas peur!
51 Puis il monta vers eux dans la barque, et le vent cessa. Ils furent en eux-même tout stupéfaits et remplis d'étonnement;
52 car ils n'avaient pas compris le miracle des pains, parce que leur coeur était endurci.
53 Après avoir traversé la mer, ils vinrent dans le pays de Génésareth, et ils abordèrent.
54 Quand ils furent sortis de la barque, les gens, ayant aussitôt reconnu Jésus,
55 parcoururent tous les environs, et l'on se mit à apporter les malades sur des lits, partout où l'on apprenait qu'il était.
56 En quelque lieu qu'il arrivât, dans les villages, dans les villes ou dans les campagnes, on mettait les malades sur les places publiques, et on le priait de leur permettre seulement de toucher le bord de son vêtement. Et tous ceux qui le touchaient étaient guéris.

30 (AG)Then the apostles gathered to Jesus and told Him all things, both what they had done and what they had taught. 31 (AH)And He said to them, “Come aside by yourselves to a deserted place and rest a while.” For (AI)there were many coming and going, and they did not even have time to eat. 32 (AJ)So they departed to a deserted place in the boat by themselves.
33 But [f]the multitudes saw them departing, and many (AK)knew Him and ran there on foot from all the cities. They arrived before them and came together to Him. 34 (AL)And Jesus, when He came out, saw a great multitude and was moved with compassion for them, because they were like (AM)sheep not having a shepherd. So (AN)He began to teach them many things. 35 (AO)When the day was now far spent, His disciples came to Him and said, “This is a deserted place, and already the hour is late. 36 Send them away, that they may go into the surrounding country and villages and buy themselves [g]bread; for they have nothing to eat.”
37 But He answered and said to them, “You give them something to eat.”
And they said to Him, (AP)“Shall we go and buy two hundred denarii worth of bread and give them something to eat?”
38 But He said to them, “How many loaves do you have? Go and see.”
And when they found out they said, (AQ)“Five, and two fish.”
39 Then He (AR)commanded them to make them all sit down in groups on the green grass. 40 So they sat down in ranks, in hundreds and in fifties. 41 And when He had taken the five loaves and the two fish, He (AS)looked up to heaven, (AT)blessed and broke the loaves, and gave them to His disciples to set before them; and the two fish He divided among them all. 42 So they all ate and were filled. 43 And they took up twelve baskets full of fragments and of the fish. 44 Now those who had eaten the loaves were [h]about five thousand men.
Jesus Walks on the Sea(AU)
45 (AV)Immediately He [i]made His disciples get into the boat and go before Him to the other side, to Bethsaida, while He sent the multitude away. 46 And when He had sent them away, He (AW)departed to the mountain to pray. 47 Now when evening came, the boat was in the middle of the sea; and He was alone on the land. 48 Then He saw them straining at rowing, for the wind was against them. Now about the fourth watch of the night He came to them, walking on the sea, and (AX)would have passed them by. 49 And when they saw Him walking on the sea, they supposed it was a (AY)ghost, and cried out; 50 for they all saw Him and were troubled. But immediately He talked with them and said to them, (AZ)“Be[j] of good cheer! It is I; do not be (BA)afraid.” 51 Then He went up into the boat to them, and the wind (BB)ceased. And they were greatly (BC)amazed in themselves beyond measure, and marveled. 52 For (BD)they had not understood about the loaves, because their (BE)heart was hardened.
Many Touch Him and Are Made Well(BF)
53 (BG)When they had crossed over, they came to the land of Gennesaret and anchored there. 54 And when they came out of the boat, immediately [k]the people recognized Him, 55 ran through that whole surrounding region, and began to carry about on beds those who were sick to wherever they heard He was. 56 Wherever He entered, into villages, cities, or the country, they laid the sick in the marketplaces, and begged Him that (BH)they might just touch the (BI)hem of His garment. And as many as touched Him were made well.
