El endemoniado gadareno
(Mt. 8.28-34; Lc. 8.26-39)
5 Vinieron al otro lado del mar, a la región de los gadarenos. 2 Y cuando salió él de la barca, en seguida vino a su encuentro, de los sepulcros, un hombre con un espíritu inmundo, 3 que tenía su morada en los sepulcros, y nadie podía atarle, ni aun con cadenas. 4 Porque muchas veces había sido atado con grillos y cadenas, mas las cadenas habían sido hechas pedazos por él, y desmenuzados los grillos; y nadie le podía dominar. 5 Y siempre, de día y de noche, andaba dando voces en los montes y en los sepulcros, e hiriéndose con piedras. 6 Cuando vio, pues, a Jesús de lejos, corrió, y se arrodilló ante él. 7 Y clamando a gran voz, dijo: ¿Qué tienes conmigo, Jesús, Hijo del Dios Altísimo? Te conjuro por Dios que no me atormentes. 8 Porque le decía: Sal de este hombre, espíritu inmundo. 9 Y le preguntó: ¿Cómo te llamas? Y respondió diciendo: Legión me llamo; porque somos muchos. 10 Y le rogaba mucho que no los enviase fuera de aquella región. 11 Estaba allí cerca del monte un gran hato de cerdos paciendo. 12 Y le rogaron todos los demonios, diciendo: Envíanos a los cerdos para que entremos en ellos. 13 Y luego Jesús les dio permiso. Y saliendo aquellos espíritus inmundos, entraron en los cerdos, los cuales eran como dos mil; y el hato se precipitó en el mar por un despeñadero, y en el mar se ahogaron.
14 Y los que apacentaban los cerdos huyeron, y dieron aviso en la ciudad y en los campos. Y salieron a ver qué era aquello que había sucedido. 15 Vienen a Jesús, y ven al que había sido atormentado del demonio, y que había tenido la legión, sentado, vestido y en su juicio cabal; y tuvieron miedo. 16 Y les contaron los que lo habían visto, cómo le había acontecido al que había tenido el demonio, y lo de los cerdos. 17 Y comenzaron a rogarle que se fuera de sus contornos. 18 Al entrar él en la barca, el que había estado endemoniado le rogaba que le dejase estar con él. 19 Mas Jesús no se lo permitió, sino que le dijo: Vete a tu casa, a los tuyos, y cuéntales cuán grandes cosas el Señor ha hecho contigo, y cómo ha tenido misericordia de ti. 20 Y se fue, y comenzó a publicar en Decápolis cuán grandes cosas había hecho Jesús con él; y todos se maravillaban.
La hija de Jairo, y la mujer que tocó el manto de Jesús

21 Pasando otra vez Jesús en una barca a la otra orilla, se reunió alrededor de él una gran multitud; y él estaba junto al mar. 22 Y vino uno de los principales de la sinagoga, llamado Jairo; y luego que le vio, se postró a sus pies, 23 y le rogaba mucho, diciendo: Mi hija está agonizando; ven y pon las manos sobre ella para que sea salva, y vivirá.
24 Fue, pues, con él; y le seguía una gran multitud, y le apretaban. 25 Pero una mujer que desde hacía doce años padecía de flujo de sangre, 26 y había sufrido mucho de muchos médicos, y gastado todo lo que tenía, y nada había aprovechado, antes le iba peor, 27 cuando oyó hablar de Jesús, vino por detrás entre la multitud, y tocó su manto. 28 Porque decía: Si tocare tan solamente su manto, seré salva. 29 Y en seguida la fuente de su sangre se secó; y sintió en el cuerpo que estaba sana de aquel azote. 30 Luego Jesús, conociendo en sí mismo el poder que había salido de él, volviéndose a la multitud, dijo: ¿Quién ha tocado mis vestidos? 31 Sus discípulos le dijeron: Ves que la multitud te aprieta, y dices: ¿Quién me ha tocado? 32 Pero él miraba alrededor para ver quién había hecho esto. 33 Entonces la mujer, temiendo y temblando, sabiendo lo que en ella había sido hecho, vino y se postró delante de él, y le dijo toda la verdad. 34 Y él le dijo: Hija, tu fe te ha hecho salva; ve en paz, y queda sana de tu azote.
35 Mientras él aún hablaba, vinieron de casa del principal de la sinagoga, diciendo: Tu hija ha muerto; ¿para qué molestas más al Maestro? 36 Pero Jesús, luego que oyó lo que se decía, dijo al principal de la sinagoga: No temas, cree solamente. 37 Y no permitió que le siguiese nadie sino Pedro, Jacobo, y Juan hermano de Jacobo. 38 Y vino a casa del principal de la sinagoga, y vio el alboroto y a los que lloraban y lamentaban mucho. 39 Y entrando, les dijo: ¿Por qué alborotáis y lloráis? La niña no está muerta, sino duerme. 40 Y se burlaban de él. Mas él, echando fuera a todos, tomó al padre y a la madre de la niña, y a los que estaban con él, y entró donde estaba la niña. 41 Y tomando la mano de la niña, le dijo: Talita cumi; que traducido es: Niña, a ti te digo, levántate. 42 Y luego la niña se levantó y andaba, pues tenía doce años. Y se espantaron grandemente. 43 Pero él les mandó mucho que nadie lo supiese, y dijo que se le diese de comer.

Liberación de un endemoniado(A)(B)
5 Cruzaron el lago hasta llegar a la región de los gerasenos.[a] 2 Tan pronto como desembarcó Jesús, un hombre poseído por un espíritu maligno salió a su encuentro de entre los sepulcros. 3 Este hombre vivía en los sepulcros y ya nadie podía sujetarlo, ni siquiera con cadenas. 4 Muchas veces lo habían atado con cadenas y grilletes, pero él los destrozaba y nadie tenía fuerza para dominarlo. 5 Noche y día andaba por los sepulcros y por las colinas, gritando y golpeándose con piedras.
6 Cuando vio a Jesús desde lejos, corrió y se postró delante de él.
7 —¿Por qué te entrometes, Jesús, Hijo del Dios Altísimo? —gritó con fuerza—. ¡Te ruego por Dios que no me atormentes!
8 Es que Jesús le había dicho: «¡Sal de este hombre, espíritu maligno!».
9 —¿Cómo te llamas? —le preguntó Jesús.
—Me llamo Legión —respondió—, porque somos muchos.
10 Y con insistencia suplicaba a Jesús que no los expulsara de aquella región.
11 En una colina estaba alimentándose una manada de muchos cerdos. 12 Entonces los demonios rogaron a Jesús:
—Mándanos a los cerdos; déjanos entrar en ellos.
13 Así que él les dio permiso. Cuando los espíritus malignos salieron del hombre, entraron en los cerdos, que eran unos dos mil; entonces la manada se precipitó al lago por el despeñadero y allí se ahogó.
14 Los que cuidaban los cerdos salieron huyendo y avisaron en el pueblo y por los campos, y la gente fue a ver lo que había pasado. 15 Llegaron adonde estaba Jesús y, cuando vieron al que había estado poseído por la legión de demonios, sentado, vestido y en su sano juicio, tuvieron miedo. 16 Los que habían presenciado estas cosas contaron a la gente lo que había sucedido con el endemoniado y con los cerdos. 17 Entonces la gente comenzó a suplicarle a Jesús que se fuera de la región.
18 Mientras subía Jesús a la barca, el que había estado endemoniado rogaba que le permitiera acompañarlo. 19 Jesús no lo permitió, sino que le dijo:
—Vete a tu casa, a los de tu familia, y diles todo lo que el Señor ha hecho por ti y cómo te ha tenido compasión.
20 Así que el hombre se fue y comenzó a proclamar en Decápolis lo mucho que Jesús había hecho por él. Y toda la gente se quedó asombrada.
Una niña muerta y una mujer enferma(C)
21 Después de que Jesús regresó en la barca al otro lado del lago, se reunió alrededor de él una gran multitud, por lo que él se quedó en la orilla. 22 Llegó entonces uno de los jefes de la sinagoga llamado Jairo. Al ver a Jesús, se arrojó a sus pies 23 y le suplicó con insistencia:
—Mi hijita se está muriendo. Ven, pon tus manos sobre ella para que se sane y viva.
24 Jesús se fue con él y lo seguía una gran multitud, la cual se agolpaba sobre él. 25 Había entre la gente una mujer que hacía doce años padecía de hemorragias. 26 Había sufrido mucho a manos de varios médicos, y se había gastado todo lo que tenía sin que le hubiera servido de nada, pues, en vez de mejorar, iba de mal en peor. 27 Cuando oyó hablar de Jesús, se acercó a él por detrás entre la gente y tocó su manto. 28 Pensaba: «Si logro tocar siquiera su manto, quedaré sana». 29 Al instante, cesó su hemorragia y se dio cuenta de que su cuerpo había quedado libre de esa aflicción.
30 Al momento, Jesús se dio cuenta de que había salido poder de sí mismo, así que se volvió hacia la gente y preguntó:
—¿Quién ha tocado mi manto?
31 —Ves que te apretuja la gente —le contestaron sus discípulos—, y aun así preguntas: “¿Quién me ha tocado?”.
32 Pero Jesús seguía mirando a su alrededor para ver quién lo había hecho. 33 La mujer, sabiendo lo que había sucedido, se acercó temblando de miedo y, arrojándose a sus pies, confesó toda la verdad.
34 —¡Hija, tu fe te ha sanado! —dijo Jesús—. Vete en paz y queda sana de tu aflicción.
35 Todavía estaba hablando Jesús cuando llegaron unos hombres de la casa de Jairo, jefe de la sinagoga, para decirle:
—Tu hija ha muerto. ¿Para qué sigues molestando al Maestro?
36 Sin hacer caso de la noticia, Jesús dijo al jefe de la sinagoga:
—No tengas miedo; nada más cree.
37 No dejó que nadie lo acompañara, excepto Pedro, Santiago y Juan, el hermano de Santiago. 38 Cuando llegaron a la casa del jefe de la sinagoga, Jesús notó el alboroto, y que la gente lloraba y daba grandes alaridos. 39 Entró y dijo:
—¿Por qué tanto alboroto y llanto? La niña no está muerta, sino dormida.
40 Entonces empezaron a burlarse de él, pero él los sacó a todos, tomó consigo al padre y a la madre de la niña y a los discípulos que estaban con él, y entró adonde estaba la niña. 41 La tomó de la mano y le dijo: «Talita cum»,[b] que significa «Niña, a ti te digo, ¡levántate!».
42 La niña, que tenía doce años, se levantó enseguida y comenzó a andar. Ante este hecho todos se llenaron de asombro. 43 Él dio órdenes estrictas de que nadie se enterara de lo ocurrido y les mandó que dieran de comer a la niña.

A Man with Demons Inside Him
5 Jesus and his followers went across the lake to the region of the Gerasene[a] people. 2 When Jesus got out of the boat, a man came to him from the caves where dead people were buried. This man, who lived in the caves, had an evil spirit living in him. 3 No one could tie him up, not even with a chain. 4 Many times people had used chains to tie the man’s hands and feet. But he always broke the chains off. No one was strong enough to control him. 5 Day and night he would wander around the burial caves and on the hills, screaming and cutting himself with stones. 6 While Jesus was still far away, the man saw him. He ran to Jesus and knelt down before him. 7-8 Jesus said to the man, “You evil spirit, come out of that man.”
But the man shouted in a loud voice, “What do you want with me, Jesus, Son of the Most High God? I beg you, promise God that you will not punish me!”
9 Then Jesus asked the man, “What is your name?”
The man answered, “My name is Legion,[b] because I have many spirits in me.” 10 The man begged Jesus again and again not to send the spirits out of that area.
11 A large herd of pigs was eating on a hill near there. 12 The evil spirits begged Jesus, “Send us to the pigs. Let us go into them.” 13 So Jesus allowed them to do this. The evil spirits left the man and went into the pigs. Then the herd of pigs rushed down the hill into the lake and were drowned. There were about 2,000 pigs in that herd.
14 The men who took care of the pigs ran away. They went to the town and to the countryside, telling everyone about this. So people went out to see what had happened. 15 They came to Jesus and saw the man who had had the many evil spirits. The man was sitting there, clothed and in his right mind. The people were frightened. 16 Some people were there who saw what Jesus had done. They told the others what had happened to the man who had the demons living in him. And they also told about the pigs. 17 Then the people began to beg Jesus to leave their area.
18 Jesus was getting ready to leave in the boat. The man who was freed from the demons begged to go with him.
19 But Jesus would not allow the man to go. Jesus said, “Go home to your family and friends. Tell them how much the Lord has done for you and how he has had mercy on you.” 20 So the man left and told the people in the Ten Towns[c] about the great things Jesus had done for him. All the people were amazed.
Jesus Gives Life to a Dead Girl and Heals A Sick Woman
21 Jesus went in the boat back to the other side of the lake. There, a large crowd gathered around him. 22 A ruler from the synagogue, named Jairus, came to that place. Jairus saw Jesus and bowed before him. 23 The ruler begged Jesus again and again. He said, “My little daughter is dying. Please come and put your hands on her. Then she will be healed and will live.” 24 So Jesus went with the ruler, and many people followed Jesus. They were pushing very close around him.
25 A woman was there who had been bleeding for the past 12 years. 26 She had suffered very much. Many doctors had tried to help her. She had spent all the money she had, but she was not improving. She was getting worse. 27 When the woman heard about Jesus, she followed him with the people and touched his coat. 28 The woman thought, “If I can even touch his coat, that will be enough to heal me.” 29 When she touched his coat, her bleeding stopped. She could feel in her body that she was healed.
30 At once Jesus felt power go out from him. So he stopped and turned around. Then he asked, “Who touched my clothes?”
31 The followers said, “There are so many people pushing against you! And you ask, ‘Who touched me?’”
32 But Jesus continued looking around to see who had touched him. 33 The woman knew that she was healed. So she came and bowed at Jesus’ feet. Shaking with fear, she told him the whole story. 34 Jesus said to the woman, “Dear woman, you are made well because you believed. Go in peace. You will have no more suffering.”
35 Jesus was still speaking to her when some men came from the house of Jairus, the synagogue ruler. The men said, “Your daughter is dead. There is now no need to bother the teacher.”
36 But Jesus paid no attention to what the men said. He said to the synagogue ruler, “Don’t be afraid; only believe.”
37 Jesus let only Peter, James, and John the brother of James go with him to Jairus’s house. 38 They came to the house of the synagogue ruler, and Jesus found many people there crying loudly. There was much confusion. 39 Jesus entered the house and said to the people, “Why are you crying and making so much noise? This child is not dead. She is only asleep.” 40 But they only laughed at Jesus. He told all the people to leave. Then he went into the room where the child was. He took the child’s father and mother and his three followers into the room with him. 41 Then he took hold of the girl’s hand and said to her, “Talitha, koum!” (This means, “Little girl, I tell you to stand up!”) 42 The girl stood right up and began walking. (She was 12 years old.) The father and mother and the followers were amazed. 43 Jesus gave the father and mother strict orders not to tell people about this. Then he told them to give the girl some food.

- 5:1 Gerasene From Gerasa, an area southeast of Lake Galilee. The exact location is uncertain and some Greek copies read, “Gergesene”; others read “Gadarene.”
- 5:9 Legion Means very many. A legion was about 5,000 men in the Roman army.
- 5:20 Ten Towns In Greek, called “Decapolis.” It was an area east of Lake Galilee that once had ten main towns.

3 Who had his dwelling among the tombs; and no man could bind him, no, not with chains:
4 Because that he had been often bound with fetters and chains, and the chains had been plucked asunder by him, and the fetters broken in pieces: neither could any man tame him.
5 And always, night and day, he was in the mountains, and in the tombs, crying, and cutting himself with stones.
6 But when he saw Jesus afar off, he ran and worshipped him,
7 And cried with a loud voice, and said, What have I to do with thee, Jesus, thou Son of the most high God? I adjure thee by God, that thou torment me not.
8 For he said unto him, Come out of the man, thou unclean spirit.
9 And he asked him, What is thy name? And he answered, saying, My name is Legion: for we are many.
10 And he besought him much that he would not send them away out of the country.
11 Now there was there nigh unto the mountains a great herd of swine feeding.
12 And all the devils besought him, saying, Send us into the swine, that we may enter into them.
13 And forthwith Jesus gave them leave. And the unclean spirits went out, and entered into the swine: and the herd ran violently down a steep place into the sea, (they were about two thousand;) and were choked in the sea.
14 And they that fed the swine fled, and told it in the city, and in the country. And they went out to see what it was that was done.
15 And they come to Jesus, and see him that was possessed with the devil, and had the legion, sitting, and clothed, and in his right mind: and they were afraid.
16 And they that saw it told them how it befell to him that was possessed with the devil, and also concerning the swine.
17 And they began to pray him to depart out of their coasts.
18 And when he was come into the ship, he that had been possessed with the devil prayed him that he might be with him.
19 Howbeit Jesus suffered him not, but saith unto him, Go home to thy friends, and tell them how great things the Lord hath done for thee, and hath had compassion on thee.
20 And he departed, and began to publish in Decapolis how great things Jesus had done for him: and all men did marvel.
21 And when Jesus was passed over again by ship unto the other side, much people gathered unto him: and he was nigh unto the sea.
22 And, behold, there cometh one of the rulers of the synagogue, Jairus by name; and when he saw him, he fell at his feet,
23 And besought him greatly, saying, My little daughter lieth at the point of death: I pray thee, come and lay thy hands on her, that she may be healed; and she shall live.
24 And Jesus went with him; and much people followed him, and thronged him.
25 And a certain woman, which had an issue of blood twelve years,
26 And had suffered many things of many physicians, and had spent all that she had, and was nothing bettered, but rather grew worse,
27 When she had heard of Jesus, came in the press behind, and touched his garment.
28 For she said, If I may touch but his clothes, I shall be whole.
29 And straightway the fountain of her blood was dried up; and she felt in her body that she was healed of that plague.
30 And Jesus, immediately knowing in himself that virtue had gone out of him, turned him about in the press, and said, Who touched my clothes?
31 And his disciples said unto him, Thou seest the multitude thronging thee, and sayest thou, Who touched me?
32 And he looked round about to see her that had done this thing.
33 But the woman fearing and trembling, knowing what was done in her, came and fell down before him, and told him all the truth.
34 And he said unto her, Daughter, thy faith hath made thee whole; go in peace, and be whole of thy plague.
35 While he yet spake, there came from the ruler of the synagogue's house certain which said, Thy daughter is dead: why troublest thou the Master any further?
36 As soon as Jesus heard the word that was spoken, he saith unto the ruler of the synagogue, Be not afraid, only believe.
37 And he suffered no man to follow him, save Peter, and James, and John the brother of James.
38 And he cometh to the house of the ruler of the synagogue, and seeth the tumult, and them that wept and wailed greatly.
39 And when he was come in, he saith unto them, Why make ye this ado, and weep? the damsel is not dead, but sleepeth.
40 And they laughed him to scorn. But when he had put them all out, he taketh the father and the mother of the damsel, and them that were with him, and entereth in where the damsel was lying.
41 And he took the damsel by the hand, and said unto her, Talitha cumi; which is, being interpreted, Damsel, I say unto thee, arise.
42 And straightway the damsel arose, and walked; for she was of the age of twelve years. And they were astonished with a great astonishment.
43 And he charged them straitly that no man should know it; and commanded that something should be given her to eat.
