Jesús y el paralítico
2 Después de varios días, Jesús regresó al pueblo de Cafarnaúm. Apenas se supo que Jesús estaba en casa, 2 mucha gente fue a verlo. Era tanta la gente que ya no cabía nadie más frente a la entrada. Entonces Jesús comenzó a anunciarles las buenas noticias.
3 De pronto, llegaron a la casa cuatro personas. Llevaban en una camilla a un hombre que nunca había podido caminar. 4 Como había tanta gente, subieron al techo[a] y abrieron un agujero. Por allí bajaron al enfermo en la camilla donde estaba acostado.
5 Cuando Jesús vio la gran confianza que aquellos hombres tenían en él, le dijo al paralítico: «Amigo, te perdono tus pecados.»
6 Al oír lo que Jesús le dijo al paralítico, unos maestros de la Ley que allí estaban pensaron: 7 «¿Cómo se atreve éste a hablar así? ¡Lo que dice es una ofensa contra Dios! Sólo Dios puede perdonar pecados.»
8 Pero Jesús se dio cuenta de lo que estaban pensando, y les dijo: «¿Por qué piensan así? 9 Díganme, ¿qué es más fácil? ¿Perdonar a este enfermo, o sanarlo? 10 Pues voy a demostrarles que yo, el Hijo del hombre, tengo autoridad aquí en la tierra para perdonar pecados.»
Entonces le dijo al que no podía caminar: 11 «Levántate, toma tu camilla y vete a tu casa.»
12 En ese mismo instante, y ante la mirada de todos, aquel hombre se levantó, tomó la camilla y salió de allí. Al verlo, todos se quedaron admirados y comenzaron a alabar a Dios diciendo: «¡Nunca habíamos visto nada como esto!»
Jesús llama a Mateo
13 Después de esto, Jesús fue otra vez a la orilla del Lago de Galilea. Mucha gente se reunió a su alrededor, y él se puso a enseñarles.
14 Luego, mientras caminaban, Jesús vio a Mateo hijo de Alfeo, que estaba sentado en el lugar donde cobraba los impuestos para Roma. Jesús le dijo: «Sígueme.»
Mateo se levantó enseguida y lo siguió.
15 Más tarde, Jesús y sus discípulos estaban cenando en la casa de Mateo. Muchos de los que cobraban impuestos, y otras personas de mala fama que ahora seguían a Jesús, también fueron invitados a la cena.

17 Jesús los oyó y les contestó:
—Los que necesitan al médico son los enfermos, no los sanos. Y yo vine a invitar a los pecadores para que regresen a Dios, no a los que se creen buenos.
Jesús enseña sobre el ayuno
18 Una vez, los discípulos de Juan el Bautista y los discípulos de los fariseos estaban ayunando. Algunas personas fueron a donde estaba Jesús y le preguntaron:
—¿Por qué tus discípulos no ayunan? Los discípulos de Juan y los discípulos de los fariseos sí lo hacen.
19 Jesús les respondió:
—Los invitados a una fiesta de bodas no ayunan mientras el novio está con ellos; 20 pero llegará el momento en que se lleven al novio, y entonces los invitados ayunarán.
21 »Si un vestido viejo se rompe, nadie le pone un parche de tela nueva; porque al lavarse el vestido, la tela nueva se encoge y el hueco se hace más grande.
22 »Tampoco se echa vino nuevo en recipientes de cuero viejo; porque al fermentar el vino nuevo hace que el cuero viejo se reviente. Así el vino nuevo se pierde, y los recipientes también. Por eso hay que echar vino nuevo en recipientes nuevos.
Los discípulos arrancan espigas de trigo
23 Un sábado, mientras Jesús y sus discípulos iban por un campo sembrado de trigo, los discípulos comenzaron a arrancar espigas.[b] 24 Cuando los fariseos vieron esto, le dijeron a Jesús:
—¡Mira lo que hacen tus discípulos! ¿Acaso no saben que está prohibido arrancar espigas en el día de descanso?
25-26 Jesús les respondió:
—¿No han leído ustedes en la Biblia lo que hizo el rey David, cuando Abiatar era el jefe de los sacerdotes? David y sus compañeros sufrían gran necesidad y tenían mucha hambre. Entonces David entró en la casa de Dios y comió del pan especial, que sólo a los sacerdotes les estaba permitido comer, y lo compartió con sus compañeros.
Además les dijo:
27 —El sábado se hizo para el bien de los seres humanos, y no los seres humanos para el bien del sábado. 28 Yo, el Hijo del hombre, soy quien decide qué puede hacerse y qué no puede hacerse en el día de descanso.

Jesus helps a man who cannot walk
2 Several days after that, Jesus returned to Capernaum. People heard the news that he had come back to his home. 2 Many people came into the house. The house was so full that there was no room, even outside the door. Jesus was teaching people about the good news. 3 Four men came. They were carrying another man on a mat. That man could not move his legs. 4 They could not reach Jesus because of the crowd. So they made a hole in the roof above the place where Jesus was.[a] They helped the man to go down through the hole. He was still lying on his mat. 5 Jesus saw the man and his friends. He knew that they believed in him. So he said to the man who could not walk, ‘My friend, I forgive you for your sins.’
6 But some teachers of God's Law were sitting there. They thought about the words that Jesus had spoken to the man. 7 They thought, ‘This man Jesus should not have said that. He is speaking as if he is God. Only God can forgive people for their sins.’
8 Immediately, Jesus knew in his spirit what the teachers were thinking. He said to them, ‘You should not think these things. 9 I said to this man who cannot walk, “I forgive you for your sins.” Instead, I could have said to him, “Stand up! Pick up your mat and walk.” Which of those is easier for me to say? 10 But I want you to know this. I, the Son of Man, have authority on earth to forgive people for their sins.’[b] Then he said to the man who could not walk, 11 ‘I am saying to you, stand up! Pick up your mat and go home.’ 12 Immediately, the man stood up. He picked up his mat and he walked out of the house. Everyone watched him do this. The people were very surprised. They praised God and they said, ‘God is great. We have never seen anything like this before.’
Jesus asks Levi to be his disciple
13 Jesus went to the shore of Lake Galilee again. A large crowd came to him, and he taught them. 14 While Jesus was walking along, he saw a man called Levi. Levi was the son of Alphaeus. His job was to take taxes from people.[c] He was sitting in his office. Jesus said to him, ‘Come with me and be my disciple.’ Levi stood up and he went with Jesus.
15 Then Jesus went to eat a meal at Levi's house. Many people followed Jesus and they ate there with him and with his disciples. Many of these were bad people and also men who took taxes. 16 Some teachers of God's Law who were Pharisees saw what was happening.[d] They said to Jesus' disciples, ‘He is eating with bad people and men who take taxes. That is not right.’
17 Jesus heard what these people were saying. He said to them, ‘People who are well do not need a doctor. It is people who are ill that need a doctor. Some people think that they always obey God. I did not come to help people like that. Some people know that they have done wrong things. I am asking those people to come to me for help.’
18 At this time, the disciples of John the Baptist and the disciples of the Pharisees were fasting. Some people came to Jesus and they asked him this question: ‘The disciples of John and the disciples of the Pharisees often fast for a time. So why do your disciples never do that?’[e]
19 Jesus answered them, ‘When a man marries, his friends cannot refuse to eat. They cannot fast while he is with them. 20 But there will be a time when people will take the man away from his friends. At that time his friends will fast.’[f]
21 Then Jesus said, ‘Nobody uses a piece of new cloth to mend an old coat. If he does, the new cloth will cause the old cloth to tear again. It will make a bigger hole than before. 22 And nobody pours new wine into old wineskins. If he does that, the new wine will tear the old wineskins. He will lose the wine and the wineskins will spoil. Instead, you must put new wine into new wineskins.’[g]
Jesus answers questions about the day of rest
23 On one Jewish day of rest, Jesus and his disciples were walking through some fields where wheat was growing. While they were walking along, his disciples picked some grains of wheat. 24 Some Pharisees said to Jesus, ‘Look at what your disciples are doing. They should not do that on our day of rest. It is against God's Law.’
25 Jesus replied, ‘You have certainly read about what David did one day.[h] He and the men who were with him were very hungry. They needed food to eat. 26 David went into the temple. He ate the special bread that was there. He gave some of it to his men to eat as well. This happened during the time that Abiathar was the leader of the priests. It is against God's Law for anyone except the priests to eat that special bread.’
27 Then Jesus said to the Pharisees, ‘God wanted to help people. So he made a day for them when they should rest. He did not make people so that they could keep laws about the day of rest. 28 So you should know that the Son of Man has authority over the laws about the day of rest.’

- 2:4 Houses in Israel had flat roofs. There were steps outside the house up to the roof. The roof was made of small sticks and hard dry soil. It was easy for the men to make a big hole in the roof. Then they could tie ropes on to the mat and they could put it down through the roof.
- 2:10 Jesus often called himself the Son of Man. He may have done this so that people would remember about some messages in the Bible. See Daniel 7:13-14.
- 2:14 Levi took money on behalf of the Roman government. The Jews did not like men who did this job.
- 2:16 The Pharisees taught people the rules that God had given to Moses. They also taught many of their own ideas. They thought that it was wrong for Jesus to eat with those kinds of people. The Pharisees thought that they themselves were very good people. They thought that they obeyed all of God's rules.
- 2:18 John the Baptist and the Pharisees taught their disciples to fast (stop eating food) for a certain time. They did this to show that they were serving God.
- 2:20 Jesus often told stories to teach the people. In this story, Jesus is like the man who marries. His disciples are like the friends. While Jesus was with his disciples, they were very happy. But soon his enemies would kill him. Then the disciples would be sad.
- 2:22 Wine is a strong drink. It needs more room as it gets older. People put wine in wineskins to keep it. Wineskins become hard when they get older, so new wine would cause them to tear. The Pharisees had many rules that were not from God. Jesus was teaching the people that the old wineskins were like those rules. The new wine was like the things that Jesus was teaching them. Jesus' new teaching did not mix with the old rules.

Jesus Forgives and Heals a Paralyzed Man(A)
2 A few days later, when Jesus again entered Capernaum, the people heard that he had come home. 2 They gathered in such large numbers(B) that there was no room left, not even outside the door, and he preached the word to them. 3 Some men came, bringing to him a paralyzed man,(C) carried by four of them. 4 Since they could not get him to Jesus because of the crowd, they made an opening in the roof above Jesus by digging through it and then lowered the mat the man was lying on. 5 When Jesus saw their faith, he said to the paralyzed man, “Son, your sins are forgiven.”(D)
6 Now some teachers of the law were sitting there, thinking to themselves, 7 “Why does this fellow talk like that? He’s blaspheming! Who can forgive sins but God alone?”(E)
8 Immediately Jesus knew in his spirit that this was what they were thinking in their hearts, and he said to them, “Why are you thinking these things? 9 Which is easier: to say to this paralyzed man, ‘Your sins are forgiven,’ or to say, ‘Get up, take your mat and walk’? 10 But I want you to know that the Son of Man(F) has authority on earth to forgive sins.” So he said to the man, 11 “I tell you, get up, take your mat and go home.” 12 He got up, took his mat and walked out in full view of them all. This amazed everyone and they praised God,(G) saying, “We have never seen anything like this!”(H)
Jesus Calls Levi and Eats With Sinners(I)
13 Once again Jesus went out beside the lake. A large crowd came to him,(J) and he began to teach them. 14 As he walked along, he saw Levi son of Alphaeus sitting at the tax collector’s booth. “Follow me,”(K) Jesus told him, and Levi got up and followed him.
15 While Jesus was having dinner at Levi’s house, many tax collectors and sinners were eating with him and his disciples, for there were many who followed him. 16 When the teachers of the law who were Pharisees(L) saw him eating with the sinners and tax collectors, they asked his disciples: “Why does he eat with tax collectors and sinners?”(M)
17 On hearing this, Jesus said to them, “It is not the healthy who need a doctor, but the sick. I have not come to call the righteous, but sinners.”(N)
Jesus Questioned About Fasting(O)
18 Now John’s disciples and the Pharisees were fasting.(P) Some people came and asked Jesus, “How is it that John’s disciples and the disciples of the Pharisees are fasting, but yours are not?”
19 Jesus answered, “How can the guests of the bridegroom fast while he is with them? They cannot, so long as they have him with them. 20 But the time will come when the bridegroom will be taken from them,(Q) and on that day they will fast.
21 “No one sews a patch of unshrunk cloth on an old garment. Otherwise, the new piece will pull away from the old, making the tear worse. 22 And no one pours new wine into old wineskins. Otherwise, the wine will burst the skins, and both the wine and the wineskins will be ruined. No, they pour new wine into new wineskins.”
Jesus Is Lord of the Sabbath(R)(S)
23 One Sabbath Jesus was going through the grainfields, and as his disciples walked along, they began to pick some heads of grain.(T) 24 The Pharisees said to him, “Look, why are they doing what is unlawful on the Sabbath?”(U)
25 He answered, “Have you never read what David did when he and his companions were hungry and in need? 26 In the days of Abiathar the high priest,(V) he entered the house of God and ate the consecrated bread, which is lawful only for priests to eat.(W) And he also gave some to his companions.”(X)
27 Then he said to them, “The Sabbath was made for man,(Y) not man for the Sabbath.(Z) 28 So the Son of Man(AA) is Lord even of the Sabbath.”

Jesus förlåter synder
2 (A) Några dagar senare kom Jesus tillbaka till Kapernaum. När man fick höra att han var hemma 2 samlades så många att de inte längre fick plats ens utanför dörren. Och han förkunnade ordet för dem.
3 Då kom man till honom med en förlamad som bars av fyra män. 4 När de för folkmassans skull inte kunde komma fram med honom till Jesus, tog de bort taket över platsen där han var. De gjorde en öppning och sänkte ner bädden som den lame låg på. 5 Jesus såg deras tro och sade till den lame: "Mitt barn, dina synder är förlåtna."
6 Nu satt där några skriftlärda, och de tänkte i sina hjärtan: 7 (B) "Varför talar han så? Han hädar! Vem kan förlåta synder utom Gud?" 8 Jesus förstod genast i sin ande att de tänkte så inom sig, och han sade till dem: "Varför tänker ni så i era hjärtan? 9 Vad är lättast, att säga till den lame: Dina synder är förlåtna, eller att säga: Res dig, ta din bädd och gå? 10 Men för att ni ska veta att Människosonen[a] har makt på jorden att förlåta synder, säger jag dig" – och nu talade han till den lame: 11 "Res dig, ta din bädd[b] och gå hem!" 12 Då reste mannen sig upp, och genast tog han sin bädd och gick ut inför ögonen på dem alla. Och alla blev utom sig av häpnad och prisade Gud och sade: "Vi har aldrig sett något liknande!"
Jesus hos tullindrivare och syndare
13 Än en gång gick Jesus längs sjön. Allt folket kom till honom, och han undervisade dem. 14 När han gick vidare såg han Levi[c], Alfeus son, sitta vid tullhuset. Han sade till honom: "Följ mig!" Då reste sig Levi och följde honom.
15 (C) När Jesus sedan låg till bords[d] i hans hus, var det många tullindrivare och syndare[e] som låg till bords tillsammans med honom och hans lärjungar. Det var många som följde honom. 16 De skriftlärda bland fariseerna[f] fick se att han åt med syndare och tullindrivare, och de frågade hans lärjungar: "Varför äter han med tullindrivare och syndare?"[g] 17 (D) Jesus hörde det och sade till dem: "Det är inte de friska som behöver läkare, utan de sjuka. Jag har inte kommit för att kalla rättfärdiga, utan syndare."
Jesus och fastan
18 (E) Johannes lärjungar och fariseerna fastade[h]. Då kom några och frågade Jesus: "Varför fastar Johannes lärjungar och fariseernas lärjungar, men inte dina lärjungar?" 19 Jesus svarade: "Bröllopsgästerna kan väl inte fasta medan brudgummen är hos dem? Så länge de har brudgummen hos sig kan de inte fasta. 20 Men det ska komma dagar när brudgummen tas ifrån dem, och då, på den dagen, kommer de att fasta.
21 Ingen syr fast en lapp av okrympt tyg på en gammal mantel. I så fall river det nya tyget bort ännu mer från den gamla manteln och revan blir värre. 22 Och ingen häller nytt vin i gamla säckar[i]. I så fall spränger vinet säckarna och både vinet och säckarna förstörs. Nej, nytt vin häller man i nya säckar."
Jesus är sabbatens Herre
23 (F) En sabbat gick Jesus genom några sädesfält, och hans lärjungar började rycka av axen[j] där de gick. 24 (G) Då sade fariseerna till honom: "Se! Varför gör de sådant som inte är tillåtet på sabbaten?" 25 (H) Han svarade: "Har ni aldrig läst vad David gjorde när han och hans män var i nöd och blev hungriga? 26 (I) Han gick in i Guds hus på översteprästen Ebjatars tid[k] och åt skådebröden[l], som bara prästerna får äta, och gav dessutom till dem som var med honom."
27 Sedan sade han till dem: "Sabbaten skapades för människan och inte människan för sabbaten. 28 Alltså är Människosonen Herre också över sabbaten."

2 And straightway many were gathered together, insomuch that there was no room to receive them, no, not so much as about the door: and he preached the word unto them.
3 And they come unto him, bringing one sick of the palsy, which was borne of four.
4 And when they could not come nigh unto him for the press, they uncovered the roof where he was: and when they had broken it up, they let down the bed wherein the sick of the palsy lay.
5 When Jesus saw their faith, he said unto the sick of the palsy, Son, thy sins be forgiven thee.
6 But there was certain of the scribes sitting there, and reasoning in their hearts,
7 Why doth this man thus speak blasphemies? who can forgive sins but God only?
8 And immediately when Jesus perceived in his spirit that they so reasoned within themselves, he said unto them, Why reason ye these things in your hearts?
9 Whether is it easier to say to the sick of the palsy, Thy sins be forgiven thee; or to say, Arise, and take up thy bed, and walk?
10 But that ye may know that the Son of man hath power on earth to forgive sins, (he saith to the sick of the palsy,)
11 I say unto thee, Arise, and take up thy bed, and go thy way into thine house.
12 And immediately he arose, took up the bed, and went forth before them all; insomuch that they were all amazed, and glorified God, saying, We never saw it on this fashion.
13 And he went forth again by the sea side; and all the multitude resorted unto him, and he taught them.
14 And as he passed by, he saw Levi the son of Alphaeus sitting at the receipt of custom, and said unto him, Follow me. And he arose and followed him.
15 And it came to pass, that, as Jesus sat at meat in his house, many publicans and sinners sat also together with Jesus and his disciples: for there were many, and they followed him.
16 And when the scribes and Pharisees saw him eat with publicans and sinners, they said unto his disciples, How is it that he eateth and drinketh with publicans and sinners?
17 When Jesus heard it, he saith unto them, They that are whole have no need of the physician, but they that are sick: I came not to call the righteous, but sinners to repentance.
18 And the disciples of John and of the Pharisees used to fast: and they come and say unto him, Why do the disciples of John and of the Pharisees fast, but thy disciples fast not?
19 And Jesus said unto them, Can the children of the bridechamber fast, while the bridegroom is with them? as long as they have the bridegroom with them, they cannot fast.
20 But the days will come, when the bridegroom shall be taken away from them, and then shall they fast in those days.
21 No man also seweth a piece of new cloth on an old garment: else the new piece that filled it up taketh away from the old, and the rent is made worse.
22 And no man putteth new wine into old bottles: else the new wine doth burst the bottles, and the wine is spilled, and the bottles will be marred: but new wine must be put into new bottles.
23 And it came to pass, that he went through the corn fields on the sabbath day; and his disciples began, as they went, to pluck the ears of corn.
24 And the Pharisees said unto him, Behold, why do they on the sabbath day that which is not lawful?
25 And he said unto them, Have ye never read what David did, when he had need, and was an hungred, he, and they that were with him?
26 How he went into the house of God in the days of Abiathar the high priest, and did eat the shewbread, which is not lawful to eat but for the priests, and gave also to them which were with him?
27 And he said unto them, The sabbath was made for man, and not man for the sabbath:
28 Therefore the Son of man is Lord also of the sabbath.
