Jesús sana a un paralítico
(Mt. 9.1-8; Lc. 5.17-26)
2 Entró Jesús otra vez en Capernaum después de algunos días; y se oyó que estaba en casa. 2 E inmediatamente se juntaron muchos, de manera que ya no cabían ni aun a la puerta; y les predicaba la palabra. 3 Entonces vinieron a él unos trayendo un paralítico, que era cargado por cuatro. 4 Y como no podían acercarse a él a causa de la multitud, descubrieron el techo de donde estaba, y haciendo una abertura, bajaron el lecho en que yacía el paralítico. 5 Al ver Jesús la fe de ellos, dijo al paralítico: Hijo, tus pecados te son perdonados. 6 Estaban allí sentados algunos de los escribas, los cuales cavilaban en sus corazones: 7 ¿Por qué habla este así? Blasfemias dice. ¿Quién puede perdonar pecados, sino solo Dios? 8 Y conociendo luego Jesús en su espíritu que cavilaban de esta manera dentro de sí mismos, les dijo: ¿Por qué caviláis así en vuestros corazones? 9 ¿Qué es más fácil, decir al paralítico: Tus pecados te son perdonados, o decirle: Levántate, toma tu lecho y anda? 10 Pues para que sepáis que el Hijo del Hombre tiene potestad en la tierra para perdonar pecados (dijo al paralítico): 11 A ti te digo: Levántate, toma tu lecho, y vete a tu casa. 12 Entonces él se levantó en seguida, y tomando su lecho, salió delante de todos, de manera que todos se asombraron, y glorificaron a Dios, diciendo: Nunca hemos visto tal cosa.
Llamamiento de Leví
(Mt. 9.9-13; Lc. 5.27-32)
13 Después volvió a salir al mar; y toda la gente venía a él, y les enseñaba. 14 Y al pasar, vio a Leví hijo de Alfeo, sentado al banco de los tributos públicos, y le dijo: Sígueme. Y levantándose, le siguió. 15 Aconteció que estando Jesús a la mesa en casa de él, muchos publicanos y pecadores estaban también a la mesa juntamente con Jesús y sus discípulos; porque había muchos que le habían seguido. 16 Y los escribas y los fariseos, viéndole comer con los publicanos y con los pecadores, dijeron a los discípulos: ¿Qué es esto, que él come y bebe con los publicanos y pecadores? 17 Al oír esto Jesús, les dijo: Los sanos no tienen necesidad de médico, sino los enfermos. No he venido a llamar a justos, sino a pecadores.
La pregunta sobre el ayuno
(Mt. 9.14-17; Lc. 5.33-39)
18 Y los discípulos de Juan y los de los fariseos ayunaban; y vinieron, y le dijeron: ¿Por qué los discípulos de Juan y los de los fariseos ayunan, y tus discípulos no ayunan? 19 Jesús les dijo: ¿Acaso pueden los que están de bodas ayunar mientras está con ellos el esposo? Entre tanto que tienen consigo al esposo, no pueden ayunar. 20 Pero vendrán días cuando el esposo les será quitado, y entonces en aquellos días ayunarán. 21 Nadie pone remiendo de paño nuevo en vestido viejo; de otra manera, el mismo remiendo nuevo tira de lo viejo, y se hace peor la rotura. 22 Y nadie echa vino nuevo en odres viejos; de otra manera, el vino nuevo rompe los odres, y el vino se derrama, y los odres se pierden; pero el vino nuevo en odres nuevos se ha de echar.
Los discípulos recogen espigas en el día de reposo
(Mt. 12.1-8; Lc. 6.1-5)
23 Aconteció que al pasar él por los sembrados un día de reposo,[a] sus discípulos, andando, comenzaron a arrancar espigas.(A) 24 Entonces los fariseos le dijeron: Mira, ¿por qué hacen en el día de reposo[b] lo que no es lícito? 25 Pero él les dijo: ¿Nunca leísteis lo que hizo David cuando tuvo necesidad, y sintió hambre, él y los que con él estaban; 26 cómo entró en la casa de Dios, siendo Abiatar sumo sacerdote, y comió los panes de la proposición, de los cuales no es lícito comer sino a los sacerdotes,(B) y aun dio a los que con él estaban?(C) 27 También les dijo: El día de reposo[c] fue hecho por causa del hombre, y no el hombre por causa del día de reposo.[d] 28 Por tanto, el Hijo del Hombre es Señor aun del día de reposo.[e]

Jesús sana a un paralítico(A)
2 Unos días después, cuando Jesús entró de nuevo en Capernaúm, corrió la voz de que estaba en casa. 2 Se aglomeraron tantos que ya no quedaba sitio ni siquiera frente a la puerta, mientras él les predicaba. 3 Entonces llegaron cuatro hombres que llevaban un paralítico. 4 Como no podían acercarlo a Jesús por causa de la multitud, quitaron parte del techo encima de donde estaba Jesús y, luego de hacer una abertura, bajaron la camilla en la que estaba acostado el paralítico. 5 Al ver la fe de ellos Jesús dijo al paralítico:
—¡Hijo, tus pecados quedan perdonados!
6 Algunos maestros de la Ley estaban sentados allí y pensaban: 7 «¿Por qué habla este así? ¡Está blasfemando! ¿Quién puede perdonar pecados sino solo Dios?».
8 En ese mismo instante supo Jesús en su espíritu que esto era lo que estaban pensando.
—¿Por qué razonan así? —dijo—. 9 ¿Qué es más fácil, decir al paralítico: “Tus pecados quedan perdonados” o decirle: “Levántate, toma tu camilla y anda”? 10 Pues, para que sepan que el Hijo del hombre tiene autoridad en la tierra para perdonar pecados —se dirigió entonces al paralítico—: 11 A ti te digo, levántate, toma tu camilla y vete a tu casa.
12 Y el hombre se levantó, tomó su camilla enseguida y salió caminando a la vista de todos. Ellos se quedaron asombrados y comenzaron a alabar a Dios.
—Jamás habíamos visto cosa igual —decían.
Llamamiento de Leví(B)
13 De nuevo salió Jesús a la orilla del lago. Toda la gente acudía a él y él les enseñaba. 14 Al pasar vio a Leví, hijo de Alfeo, sentado a la mesa de recaudación de impuestos.
«Sígueme» —dijo Jesús.
Y Leví se levantó y lo siguió.
15 Mientras Jesús estaba a la mesa en casa de Leví, muchos recaudadores de impuestos y pecadores comieron con él y sus discípulos, pues ya eran muchos los que lo seguían. 16 Cuando los maestros de la Ley, que eran fariseos, vieron con quién comía, preguntaron a sus discípulos:
—¿Por qué come con recaudadores de impuestos y con pecadores?
17 Al oír esto, Jesús contestó:
—No son los sanos los que necesitan médico, sino los enfermos. Y yo no he venido a llamar a justos, sino a pecadores.
Le preguntan a Jesús sobre el ayuno(C)
18 Al ver que los discípulos de Juan y los fariseos ayunaban, algunos se acercaron a Jesús y le preguntaron:
—¿Cómo es que los discípulos de Juan y de los fariseos ayunan, pero los tuyos no?
19 Jesús contestó:
—¿Acaso pueden ayunar los invitados del novio mientras él está con ellos? No pueden hacerlo mientras lo tienen con ellos. 20 Pero llegará el día en que se les quitará el novio y ese día sí ayunarán. 21 Nadie remienda un vestido viejo con un retazo de tela nueva. De hacerlo así, el remiendo fruncirá el vestido y la rotura se hará peor. 22 Ni echa nadie vino nuevo en recipientes de cuero viejo. De hacerlo así, el vino hará reventar el cuero y se arruinarán tanto el vino como los recipientes. Más bien, el vino nuevo se echa en recipientes de cuero nuevo.
Señor del sábado(D)(E)
23 Un sábado, al pasar Jesús por los sembrados, sus discípulos comenzaron a arrancar a su paso unas espigas de trigo.
24 —Mira —le preguntaron los fariseos—, ¿por qué hacen ellos lo que está prohibido hacer en día sábado?
25 Él contestó:
—¿Nunca han leído lo que hizo David en aquella ocasión en que él y sus compañeros tuvieron hambre y pasaron necesidad? 26 Entró en la casa de Dios cuando Abiatar era el sumo sacerdote y comió los panes consagrados a Dios, que solo a los sacerdotes les es permitido comer. Y dio también a sus compañeros.
27 »El sábado se hizo para el ser humano y no el ser humano para el sábado —añadió—. 28 Así que el Hijo del hombre es Señor incluso del sábado.

2 And Jesus having returned to Capernaum, after some days it was rumored about that He was in the house [probably Peter’s].
2 And so many people gathered together there that there was no longer room [for them], not even around the door; and He was discussing the Word.
3 Then they came, bringing a paralytic to Him, who had been picked up and was being carried by four men.
4 And when they could not get him to a place in front of Jesus because of the throng, they dug through the roof above Him; and when they had [a]scooped out an opening, they let down the [[b]thickly padded] quilt or mat upon which the paralyzed man lay.
5 And when Jesus saw their faith [their confidence in God through Him], He said to the paralyzed man, Son, your sins are forgiven [you] and put away [that is, the [c]penalty is remitted, the sense of guilt removed, and you are made upright and in right standing with God].
6 Now some of the scribes were sitting there, holding a dialogue with themselves as they questioned in their hearts,
7 Why does this [d]Man talk like this? He is blaspheming! Who can forgive sins [[e]remove guilt, remit the penalty, and bestow righteousness instead] except God alone?
8 And at once Jesus, becoming fully aware in His spirit that they thus debated within themselves, said to them, Why do you argue (debate, reason) about all this in your hearts?
9 Which is easier: to say to the paralyzed man, Your sins are forgiven and [f]put away, or to say, Rise, take up your sleeping pad or mat, and start walking about [and [g]keep on walking]?
10 But that you may know positively and beyond a doubt that the Son of Man has right and authority and power on earth to forgive sins—He said to the paralyzed man,
11 I say to you, arise, pick up and carry your sleeping pad or mat, and be going on home.
12 And he arose at once and picked up the sleeping pad or mat and went out before them all, so that they were all amazed and [h] recognized and praised and thanked God, saying, We have never seen anything like this before!
13 [Jesus] went out again along the seashore; and all the multitude kept gathering about Him, and He kept teaching them.
14 And as He was passing by, He saw Levi (Matthew) son of Alphaeus sitting at the tax office, and He said to him, Follow Me! [Be [i]joined to Me as a disciple, side with My party!] And he arose and joined Him as His disciple and sided with His party and accompanied Him.
15 And as Jesus, together with His disciples, sat at table in his [Levi’s] house, many tax collectors and persons [[j]definitely stained] with sin were dining with Him, for there were many who walked the same road (followed) with Him.
16 And the scribes [belonging to the party] of the Pharisees, when they saw that He was eating with [those [k]definitely known to be especially wicked] sinners and tax collectors, said to His disciples, Why does He eat and drink with tax collectors and [notorious] sinners?
17 And when Jesus heard it, He said to them, Those who are strong and well have no need of a physician, but those who are weak and sick; I came not to call the righteous ones to repentance, but sinners (the [l]erring ones and [m]all those not free from sin).
18 Now John’s disciples and the Pharisees were observing a fast; and [some people] came and asked Jesus, Why are John’s disciples and the disciples of the Pharisees fasting, but Your disciples are not doing so?
19 Jesus answered them, Can the wedding guests fast (abstain from food and drink) while the bridegroom is with them? As long as they have the bridegroom with them, they cannot fast.
20 But the days will come when the bridegroom will be taken away from them, and they will fast in that day.
21 No one sews a patch of unshrunken (new) goods on an old garment; if he does, the patch tears away from it, the new from the old, and the rent (tear) becomes bigger and worse [than it was before].
22 And no one puts new wine into old wineskins; if he does, the wine will burst the skins, and the wine is lost and the bottles destroyed; but new wine is to be put in new (fresh) wineskins.
23 One Sabbath He was going along beside the fields of standing grain, and as they made their way, His disciples began to [n]pick off the grains.(A)
24 And the Pharisees said to Him, Look! Why are they doing what is not permitted or lawful on the Sabbath?
25 And He said to them, Have you never [even] read what David did when he was in need and was hungry, he and those who were accompanying him?—
26 How he went into the house of God when Abiathar was the high priest, and ate the sacred loaves set forth [before God], which it is not permitted or lawful for any but the priests to eat, and [how he] also gave [them] to those who were with him?(B)
27 And Jesus said to them, The Sabbath was made on account and for the sake of man, not man for the Sabbath;(C)
28 So the Son of Man is Lord even of the Sabbath.

Jesus Forgives and Heals a Paralyzed Man(A)
2 A few days later, when Jesus again entered Capernaum, the people heard that he had come home. 2 They gathered in such large numbers(B) that there was no room left, not even outside the door, and he preached the word to them. 3 Some men came, bringing to him a paralyzed man,(C) carried by four of them. 4 Since they could not get him to Jesus because of the crowd, they made an opening in the roof above Jesus by digging through it and then lowered the mat the man was lying on. 5 When Jesus saw their faith, he said to the paralyzed man, “Son, your sins are forgiven.”(D)
6 Now some teachers of the law were sitting there, thinking to themselves, 7 “Why does this fellow talk like that? He’s blaspheming! Who can forgive sins but God alone?”(E)
8 Immediately Jesus knew in his spirit that this was what they were thinking in their hearts, and he said to them, “Why are you thinking these things? 9 Which is easier: to say to this paralyzed man, ‘Your sins are forgiven,’ or to say, ‘Get up, take your mat and walk’? 10 But I want you to know that the Son of Man(F) has authority on earth to forgive sins.” So he said to the man, 11 “I tell you, get up, take your mat and go home.” 12 He got up, took his mat and walked out in full view of them all. This amazed everyone and they praised God,(G) saying, “We have never seen anything like this!”(H)
Jesus Calls Levi and Eats With Sinners(I)
13 Once again Jesus went out beside the lake. A large crowd came to him,(J) and he began to teach them. 14 As he walked along, he saw Levi son of Alphaeus sitting at the tax collector’s booth. “Follow me,”(K) Jesus told him, and Levi got up and followed him.
15 While Jesus was having dinner at Levi’s house, many tax collectors and sinners were eating with him and his disciples, for there were many who followed him. 16 When the teachers of the law who were Pharisees(L) saw him eating with the sinners and tax collectors, they asked his disciples: “Why does he eat with tax collectors and sinners?”(M)
17 On hearing this, Jesus said to them, “It is not the healthy who need a doctor, but the sick. I have not come to call the righteous, but sinners.”(N)
Jesus Questioned About Fasting(O)
18 Now John’s disciples and the Pharisees were fasting.(P) Some people came and asked Jesus, “How is it that John’s disciples and the disciples of the Pharisees are fasting, but yours are not?”
19 Jesus answered, “How can the guests of the bridegroom fast while he is with them? They cannot, so long as they have him with them. 20 But the time will come when the bridegroom will be taken from them,(Q) and on that day they will fast.
21 “No one sews a patch of unshrunk cloth on an old garment. Otherwise, the new piece will pull away from the old, making the tear worse. 22 And no one pours new wine into old wineskins. Otherwise, the wine will burst the skins, and both the wine and the wineskins will be ruined. No, they pour new wine into new wineskins.”
Jesus Is Lord of the Sabbath(R)(S)
23 One Sabbath Jesus was going through the grainfields, and as his disciples walked along, they began to pick some heads of grain.(T) 24 The Pharisees said to him, “Look, why are they doing what is unlawful on the Sabbath?”(U)
25 He answered, “Have you never read what David did when he and his companions were hungry and in need? 26 In the days of Abiathar the high priest,(V) he entered the house of God and ate the consecrated bread, which is lawful only for priests to eat.(W) And he also gave some to his companions.”(X)
27 Then he said to them, “The Sabbath was made for man,(Y) not man for the Sabbath.(Z) 28 So the Son of Man(AA) is Lord even of the Sabbath.”

6 But there was certain of the scribes sitting there, and reasoning in their hearts,
7 Why doth this man thus speak blasphemies? who can forgive sins but God only?
8 And immediately when Jesus perceived in his spirit that they so reasoned within themselves, he said unto them, Why reason ye these things in your hearts?
9 Whether is it easier to say to the sick of the palsy, Thy sins be forgiven thee; or to say, Arise, and take up thy bed, and walk?
10 But that ye may know that the Son of man hath power on earth to forgive sins, (he saith to the sick of the palsy,)
11 I say unto thee, Arise, and take up thy bed, and go thy way into thine house.
12 And immediately he arose, took up the bed, and went forth before them all; insomuch that they were all amazed, and glorified God, saying, We never saw it on this fashion.
13 And he went forth again by the sea side; and all the multitude resorted unto him, and he taught them.
14 And as he passed by, he saw Levi the son of Alphaeus sitting at the receipt of custom, and said unto him, Follow me. And he arose and followed him.
15 And it came to pass, that, as Jesus sat at meat in his house, many publicans and sinners sat also together with Jesus and his disciples: for there were many, and they followed him.
16 And when the scribes and Pharisees saw him eat with publicans and sinners, they said unto his disciples, How is it that he eateth and drinketh with publicans and sinners?
17 When Jesus heard it, he saith unto them, They that are whole have no need of the physician, but they that are sick: I came not to call the righteous, but sinners to repentance.
18 And the disciples of John and of the Pharisees used to fast: and they come and say unto him, Why do the disciples of John and of the Pharisees fast, but thy disciples fast not?
19 And Jesus said unto them, Can the children of the bridechamber fast, while the bridegroom is with them? as long as they have the bridegroom with them, they cannot fast.
20 But the days will come, when the bridegroom shall be taken away from them, and then shall they fast in those days.
21 No man also seweth a piece of new cloth on an old garment: else the new piece that filled it up taketh away from the old, and the rent is made worse.
22 And no man putteth new wine into old bottles: else the new wine doth burst the bottles, and the wine is spilled, and the bottles will be marred: but new wine must be put into new bottles.
23 And it came to pass, that he went through the corn fields on the sabbath day; and his disciples began, as they went, to pluck the ears of corn.
24 And the Pharisees said unto him, Behold, why do they on the sabbath day that which is not lawful?
25 And he said unto them, Have ye never read what David did, when he had need, and was an hungred, he, and they that were with him?
26 How he went into the house of God in the days of Abiathar the high priest, and did eat the shewbread, which is not lawful to eat but for the priests, and gave also to them which were with him?
27 And he said unto them, The sabbath was made for man, and not man for the sabbath:
28 Therefore the Son of man is Lord also of the sabbath.
