El complot para aprehender a Jesús(A)
14 Faltaban dos días para la pascua(B) y para la fiesta de los panes sin levadura. Por medio de engaños, los principales sacerdotes y los escribas buscaban la manera de arrestar a Jesús para matarlo. 2 Pero decían: «No lo haremos durante la fiesta, para que no se alborote el pueblo.»
Jesús es ungido en Betania(C)
3 Mientras Jesús estaba en Betania, sentado a la mesa en la casa de Simón el leproso, llegó una mujer. Llevaba ésta un vaso de alabastro con perfume de nardo puro, que era muy costoso. Rompió el vaso de alabastro, y derramó el perfume sobre la cabeza de Jesús.(D) 4 Algunos de los que allí estaban se enojaron internamente, y dijeron: «¿Por qué se ha desperdiciado así este perfume? 5 ¡Podría haberse vendido por más de trescientos denarios, y ese dinero habérselo dado a los pobres!» Y se enojaron mucho contra ella. 6 Pero Jesús dijo: «Déjenla tranquila. ¿Por qué la molestan? Ella ha efectuado en mí una buena obra. 7 A los pobres siempre los tendrán entre ustedes,(E) y cuando quieran podrán hacer por ellos algo bueno. Pero a mí no siempre me tendrán. 8 Esta mujer ha hecho lo que pudo. Se ha anticipado a ungir mi cuerpo para la sepultura. 9 De cierto les digo que en cualquier parte del mundo donde este evangelio sea proclamado, también se contará lo que esta mujer ha hecho, y así será recordada.»
Judas ofrece entregar a Jesús(F)
10 Judas Iscariote, que era uno de los doce, fue a hablar con los principales sacerdotes para entregarles a Jesús. 11 Cuando ellos lo oyeron, se alegraron y prometieron darle dinero. Y Judas comenzó a buscar el mejor momento de entregarlo.
Institución de la Cena del Señor(G)
12 El primer día de la fiesta de los panes sin levadura, que es cuando se sacrifica el cordero de la pascua, sus discípulos le preguntaron: «¿Dónde quieres que hagamos los preparativos para que comas la pascua?» 13 Jesús envió a dos de sus discípulos. Les dijo: «Vayan a la ciudad, y les saldrá al encuentro un hombre que lleva un cántaro de agua. Síganlo, 14 y díganle al dueño de la casa donde entre: “El Maestro pregunta: ‘¿Dónde está el aposento en donde comeré la pascua con mis discípulos?’” 15 El dueño les mostrará entonces un gran aposento alto, ya dispuesto. Hagan allí los preparativos para nosotros.» 16 Los discípulos partieron, y al entrar en la ciudad encontraron todo tal y como Jesús se lo había dicho, y prepararon la pascua.
17 Al caer la noche, llegó Jesús con los doce. 18 Ya sentados a la mesa, y mientras comían, Jesús dijo: «De cierto les digo que uno de ustedes me va a traicionar. Ahora está comiendo conmigo.» 19 Ellos se pusieron muy tristes, y uno por uno comenzaron a preguntarle: «¿Seré yo?» 20 Jesús les respondió: «Es uno de los doce, el que está mojando el pan en el plato conmigo. 21 A decir verdad, el Hijo del Hombre sigue su camino, como está escrito acerca de él,(H) ¡pero ay de aquél que lo traiciona! ¡Más le valdría no haber nacido!»
22 Mientras comían, Jesús tomó el pan y lo bendijo; luego lo partió y se lo dio, al tiempo que decía: «Tomen, esto es mi cuerpo.» 23 Después tomó la copa, y luego de dar gracias, se la dio, y todos bebieron de ella. 24 Les dijo entonces: «Esto es mi sangre(I) del pacto,(J) que por muchos es derramada. 25 De cierto les digo que no volveré a beber del fruto de la vid, hasta el día en que beba el vino nuevo en el reino de Dios.»
Jesús anuncia la negación de Pedro(K)
26 Luego de cantar el himno, fueron al monte de los Olivos. 27 Allí Jesús les dijo: «Todos ustedes se escandalizarán de mí. Está escrito: “Heriré al pastor, y las ovejas serán dispersadas.”(L) 28 Pero después de que yo haya resucitado, iré delante de ustedes a Galilea.(M)» 29 Entonces Pedro le dijo: «Aunque todos se escandalicen, yo no lo haré.» 30 Jesús le dijo: «De cierto te digo que esta misma noche, antes de que el gallo cante dos veces, tú me habrás negado tres veces.» 31 Pero Pedro insistía: «Aun si tuviera que morir contigo, no te negaré.» Y todos decían lo mismo.
Jesús ora en Getsemaní(N)
32 Al llegar a un lugar llamado Getsemaní, Jesús les dijo a sus discípulos: «Siéntense aquí, mientras yo voy a orar.» 33 Se llevó consigo a Pedro, Jacobo y Juan, y comenzó a entristecerse y angustiarse. 34 Les dijo: «Siento en el alma una tristeza de muerte. Quédense aquí, y manténganse despiertos.» 35 Se fue un poco más adelante y, postrándose en tierra, oró que, de ser posible, no tuviera que pasar por ese momento. 36 Decía: «¡Abba, Padre! Para ti, todo es posible. ¡Aparta de mí esta copa! Pero que no sea lo que yo quiero, sino lo que quieres tú.» 37 Volvió luego a donde estaban sus discípulos, y los encontró dormidos. Entonces le dijo a Pedro: «¿Duermes, Simón? ¿No has podido mantenerte despierto ni una hora? 38 Manténganse despiertos, y oren, para que no caigan en tentación. A decir verdad, el espíritu está dispuesto, pero la carne es débil.» 39 Una vez más se retiró para orar, y repitió la misma oración. 40 Cuando volvió, otra vez los encontró dormidos, porque los ojos de ellos se les cerraban de sueño, y no sabían qué responderle. 41 Cuando volvió la tercera vez, les dijo: «Sigan durmiendo y descansando. ¡Ya basta! La hora ha llegado. ¡Miren al Hijo del Hombre, que es entregado en manos de los pecadores! 42 ¡Vamos, levántense, que ya se acerca el que me traiciona!»
Arresto de Jesús(O)
43 De pronto, mientras Jesús estaba hablando, llegó Judas, que era uno de los doce. Con él venía mucha gente armada con espadas y palos, y enviada por los principales sacerdotes, los escribas y los ancianos. 44 El que lo estaba traicionando les había dado esta contraseña: «Al que yo le dé un beso, ése es. ¡Arréstenlo, y llévenselo bien asegurado!» 45 Cuando Judas llegó, se acercó a Jesús y le dijo: «¡Maestro!» Y le dio un beso. 46 Aquellos hombres le echaron mano y lo arrestaron. 47 Pero uno de los que estaban allí sacó la espada e hirió al siervo del sumo sacerdote, cortándole la oreja. 48 Jesús les dijo: «¿Han venido a arrestarme con espadas y palos, como si fuera yo un ladrón? 49 Todos los días estuve con ustedes enseñando en el templo,(P) y no me aprehendieron. Pero esto sucede para que se cumplan las Escrituras.» 50 Y todos los discípulos lo abandonaron y huyeron.
El joven que huyó
51 Cierto joven seguía a Jesús, cubierto con sólo una sábana. Cuando lo aprehendieron, 52 el joven dejó la sábana y huyó desnudo.
Jesús ante el concilio(Q)
53 Llevaron a Jesús ante el sumo sacerdote, y se reunieron todos los principales sacerdotes, los ancianos y los escribas. 54 Pedro lo siguió de lejos hasta el interior del patio del sumo sacerdote. Allí se quedó, sentado con los alguaciles y calentándose junto al fuego. 55 Los principales sacerdotes y todo el tribunal buscaban alguna prueba contra Jesús, para poder condenarlo a muerte, pero no la encontraban. 56 Muchos presentaban falsos testimonios contra él, pero sus testimonios no concordaban. 57 Entonces algunos se levantaron y presentaron un falso testimonio contra él. Dijeron: 58 «Nosotros le hemos oído decir: “Yo derribaré este templo hecho por la mano del hombre, y en tres días levantaré otro sin la intervención humana.”»(R) 59 Pero ni aun así se ponían de acuerdo en sus testimonios. 60 El sumo sacerdote se paró en medio del tribunal y le preguntó a Jesús: «¿No vas a responder? ¡Mira lo que éstos dicen contra ti!» 61 Pero Jesús guardó silencio, y no contestó nada, así que el sumo sacerdote le volvió a preguntar: «¿Eres tú el Cristo, el Hijo del Bendito?» 62 Jesús le respondió: «Yo soy. Y ustedes verán al Hijo del Hombre sentado a la derecha del Poderoso, y venir en las nubes del cielo.»(S) 63 El sumo sacerdote se rasgó entonces sus vestiduras, y dijo: «¿Qué necesidad tenemos de más testigos? 64 ¡Ustedes han oído la blasfemia! ¿Qué les parece?» Y todos ellos lo condenaron y declararon que merecía la muerte.(T) 65 Algunos comenzaron a escupirlo, y mientras le cubrían el rostro y le daban de puñetazos, le decían: «¡Profetiza!» Y también los alguaciles le daban de bofetadas.
Pedro niega a Jesús(U)
66 Mientras Pedro estaba abajo, en el patio, llegó una de las criadas del sumo sacerdote 67 y, al ver a Pedro calentándose junto al fuego, le dijo: «¡También tú estabas con Jesús el nazareno!» 68 Pero Pedro lo negó, y dijo: «No lo conozco, ni sé de qué hablas.» Y se dirigió a la entrada. En ese momento cantó el gallo. 69 Pero la criada volvió a verlo, y comenzó a decir a los que estaban allí: «¡Éste es uno de ellos!» 70 Pedro volvió a negarlo. Pero poco después los que estaban allí volvieron a decirle: «La verdad es que eres uno de ellos, pues eres galileo.» 71 Pedro comenzó entonces a maldecir y a jurar: «¡Yo no conozco a ese hombre, del que ustedes hablan!» 72 En ese mismo instante el gallo cantó por segunda vez. Entonces Pedro se acordó de lo que Jesús le había dicho: «Antes de que el gallo cante dos veces, tú me habrás negado tres veces.» Y al pensar en esto, se echó a llorar.

Una mujer unge a Jesús en Betania(A)(B)
14 Faltaban solo dos días para la Pascua y para la fiesta de los Panes sin levadura. Los jefes de los sacerdotes y los maestros de la Ley buscaban con artimañas cómo arrestar a Jesús para matarlo. 2 Por eso decían: «No durante la fiesta, no sea que se amotine el pueblo».
3 En Betania, mientras estaba él sentado a la mesa en casa de Simón, el que había tenido una enfermedad en la piel, llegó una mujer con un frasco de alabastro lleno de un perfume muy costoso, hecho de nardo puro. Rompió el frasco y derramó el perfume sobre la cabeza de Jesús.
4 Algunos de los presentes comentaban indignados:
—¿Para qué este desperdicio de perfume? 5 Podía haberse vendido por el salario de más de un año de trabajo[a] para dárselo a los pobres.
Y la reprendían con severidad.
6 —Déjenla en paz —dijo Jesús—. ¿Por qué la molestan? Ella ha hecho una obra hermosa conmigo. 7 A los pobres siempre los tendrán con ustedes, y podrán ayudarlos cuando quieran; pero a mí no me van a tener siempre. 8 Ella hizo lo que pudo. Ungió mi cuerpo de antemano, preparándolo para la sepultura. 9 Les aseguro que en cualquier parte del mundo donde se predique el evangelio, se contará también, en memoria de esta mujer, lo que ella hizo.
10 Judas Iscariote, uno de los doce, fue a los jefes de los sacerdotes para entregarles a Jesús. 11 Ellos se alegraron al oírlo y prometieron darle dinero. Así que él buscaba la ocasión propicia para entregarlo.
La Cena del Señor(C)(D)
12 El primer día de la fiesta de los Panes sin levadura, cuando se acostumbraba a sacrificar el cordero de la Pascua, los discípulos preguntaron a Jesús:
—¿Dónde quieres que vayamos a hacer los preparativos para que comas la Pascua?
13 Él envió a dos de sus discípulos con este encargo: «Vayan a la ciudad y les saldrá al encuentro un hombre que lleva un cántaro de agua. Síganlo, 14 y allí donde entre díganle al dueño: “El Maestro pregunta: ¿dónde está mi sala en la que voy a comer la Pascua con mis discípulos?”». 15 Él les mostrará en la planta alta una sala amplia, amueblada y arreglada. Preparen allí nuestra cena.
16 Los discípulos salieron, entraron en la ciudad y encontraron todo tal y como les había dicho Jesús. Así que prepararon la Pascua.
17 Al anochecer, llegó Jesús con los doce. 18 Mientras estaban sentados a la mesa comiendo, dijo:
—Les aseguro que uno de ustedes, que está comiendo conmigo, me va a traicionar.
19 Ellos se pusieron tristes y uno tras otro empezaron a preguntarle:
—¿Acaso seré yo?
20 —Es uno de los doce —contestó—, uno que moja el pan conmigo en el plato. 21 El Hijo del hombre se irá, tal como está escrito de él, pero ¡ay de aquel que lo traiciona! Más le valdría a ese hombre no haber nacido.
22 Mientras comían, Jesús tomó pan y lo bendijo. Luego lo partió y se lo dio a ellos, diciéndoles:
—Tomen; esto es mi cuerpo.
23 Después tomó una copa, dio gracias, se la pasó a ellos y todos bebieron de ella.
24 —Esto es mi sangre del pacto[b] que es derramada por muchos —dijo—. 25 Les aseguro que no volveré a beber del fruto de la vid hasta aquel día en que beba el vino nuevo en el reino de Dios.
26 Después de cantar los salmos, salieron al monte de los Olivos.
Jesús predice la negación de Pedro(E)
27 —Todos ustedes me abandonarán —dijo Jesús—, porque está escrito:
»“Heriré al pastor
y se dispersarán las ovejas”.[c]
28 Pero después de que yo resucite, iré delante de ustedes a Galilea.
29 —Aunque todos te abandonen, yo no —declaró Pedro.
30 —Te aseguro —le contestó Jesús— que hoy, esta misma noche, antes de que el gallo cante por segunda vez,[d] me negarás tres veces.
31 —Aunque tenga que morir contigo —insistió Pedro con vehemencia—, jamás te negaré.
Y los demás dijeron lo mismo.
Getsemaní(F)
32 Fueron a un lugar llamado Getsemaní y Jesús dijo a sus discípulos: «Siéntense aquí mientras yo oro». 33 Se llevó a Pedro, a Santiago y a Juan, y comenzó a sentir temor y angustia. 34 «Es tal la angustia que me invade que me siento morir —dijo—. Quédense aquí y manténganse despiertos».
35 Yendo un poco más allá, se postró en tierra y empezó a orar que, de ser posible, no tuviera él que pasar por aquella hora. 36 Decía: «Abba, Padre, todo es posible para ti. No me hagas beber este trago amargo;[e] pero no sea lo que yo quiero, sino lo que quieres tú».
37 Luego volvió a sus discípulos y los encontró dormidos. «Simón —dijo a Pedro—, ¿estás dormido? ¿No pudiste mantenerte despierto ni una hora? 38 Permanezcan despiertos y oren para que no caigan en tentación. El espíritu está dispuesto, pero el cuerpo es débil».
39 Una vez más se retiró e hizo la misma oración. 40 Cuando volvió, otra vez los encontró dormidos, porque se les cerraban los ojos de sueño. No sabían qué decirle. 41 Al volver por tercera vez, les dijo: «¿Siguen durmiendo y descansando? ¡Se acabó! Ha llegado la hora. Miren, el Hijo del hombre va a ser entregado en manos de pecadores. 42 ¡Levántense! ¡Vámonos! ¡Ahí viene el que me traiciona!».
Arresto de Jesús(G)
43 Todavía estaba hablando Jesús cuando apareció Judas, uno de los doce. Lo acompañaba una turba armada con espadas y palos, enviada por los jefes de los sacerdotes, los maestros de la Ley y los líderes religiosos.
44 El traidor había dado esta contraseña: «Al que le dé un beso, ese es; arréstenlo y llévenselo bien asegurado». 45 Tan pronto como llegó, Judas se acercó a Jesús y dijo:
—¡Rabí!
Y lo besó.
46 Entonces los hombres prendieron a Jesús. 47 Pero uno de los que estaban ahí desenfundó la espada e hirió al siervo del sumo sacerdote, cortándole una oreja.
48 —¿Acaso soy un bandido[f] —dijo Jesús—, para que vengan con espadas y palos a arrestarme? 49 Todos los días estaba con ustedes, enseñando en el Templo, y no me arrestaron. Pero es preciso que se cumplan las Escrituras.
50 Entonces todos lo abandonaron y huyeron. 51 Cierto joven que se cubría con solo una sábana iba siguiendo a Jesús. Lo detuvieron, 52 pero él soltó la sábana y escapó desnudo.
Jesús ante el Consejo(H)(I)
53 Llevaron a Jesús ante el sumo sacerdote y se reunieron allí todos los jefes de los sacerdotes, los líderes religiosos y los maestros de la Ley. 54 Pedro lo siguió de lejos hasta dentro del patio del sumo sacerdote. Allí se sentó con los guardias y se calentó junto al fuego.
55 Los jefes de los sacerdotes y el Consejo en pleno buscaban alguna prueba contra Jesús para poder condenarlo a muerte, pero no la encontraban. 56 Muchos testificaban falsamente contra él, pero sus declaraciones no coincidían. 57 Entonces unos decidieron dar este falso testimonio contra él:
58 —Nosotros le oímos decir: “Destruiré este Templo hecho por hombres y en tres días construiré otro, no hecho por hombres”.
59 Pero ni aun así concordaban sus declaraciones.
60 Poniéndose en pie en el medio, el sumo sacerdote interrogó a Jesús:
—¿No vas a responder? ¿Qué significan estas denuncias en tu contra?
61 Pero Jesús se quedó callado y no contestó nada.
—¿Eres el Cristo, el Hijo del Bendito? —preguntó de nuevo el sumo sacerdote.
62 —Sí, yo soy —dijo Jesús—. Y ustedes verán al Hijo del hombre sentado a la derecha del Todopoderoso y viniendo en las nubes del cielo.
63 —¿Para qué necesitamos más testigos? —dijo el sumo sacerdote, rasgándose las vestiduras—. 64 ¡Ustedes han oído la blasfemia! ¿Qué les parece?
Todos ellos lo condenaron como digno de muerte. 65 Algunos comenzaron a escupirlo y, luego de vendarle sus ojos, le daban puñetazos.
—¡Profetiza! —gritaban.
Los guardias también lo abofeteaban.
Pedro niega a Jesús(J)
66 Mientras Pedro estaba abajo en el patio, pasó una de las criadas del sumo sacerdote. 67 Cuando vio a Pedro calentándose, se fijó en él.
—Tú también estabas con ese Nazareno, con Jesús —le dijo ella.
68 Pero él lo negó:
—No lo conozco. Ni siquiera sé de qué estás hablando.
Y salió a la entrada; en ese momento el gallo cantó.
69 Cuando la criada lo vio allí, dijo de nuevo a los presentes:
—Este es uno de ellos.
70 Él lo volvió a negar.
Poco después, los que estaban allí dijeron a Pedro:
—Seguro que eres uno de ellos, pues eres galileo.
71 Él comenzó a echarse maldiciones.
—¡No conozco a ese hombre del que hablan! —juró.
72 Al instante, el gallo cantó por segunda vez. Pedro se acordó de lo que Jesús le había dicho: «Antes de que el gallo cante por segunda vez, me negarás tres veces». Y se echó a llorar.

The Plan to Kill Jesus
14 It was now only two days before the Passover and the Feast of Unleavened Bread. The leading priests and teachers of the law were trying to find a way to use some trick to arrest Jesus and kill him. 2 But they said, “We must not do it during the feast. The people might cause a riot.”
A Woman with Perfume for Jesus
3 Jesus was in Bethany. He was at dinner in the house of Simon, who had a harmful skin disease. While Jesus was there, a woman came to him. She had an alabaster jar filled with very expensive perfume, made of pure nard. The woman opened the jar and poured the perfume on Jesus’ head.
4 Some of those who were there saw this and became angry. They complained to each other, saying, “Why waste that perfume? 5 It was worth a full year’s work. It could be sold, and the money could be given to the poor.” They spoke to the woman sharply.
6 Jesus said, “Don’t bother the woman. Why are you troubling her? She did a beautiful thing for me. 7 You will always have the poor with you. You can help them anytime you want. But you will not always have me. 8 This woman did the only thing she could do for me. She poured perfume on my body. She did this before I die to prepare me for burial. 9 I tell you the truth. The Good News will be told to people in all the world. And in every place it is preached, what this woman has done will be told. And people will remember her.”
Judas Becomes an Enemy of Jesus
10 One of the 12 followers, Judas Iscariot, went to talk to the leading priests. Judas offered to give Jesus to them. 11 The leading priests were pleased about this. They promised to pay Judas money. So he waited for the best time to give Jesus to them.
Jesus Eats the Passover Feast
12 It was now the first day of the Feast of Unleavened Bread. This was a time when the Jews always sacrificed the Passover lambs. Jesus’ followers came to him. They said, “We will go and prepare everything for the Passover Feast. Where do you want to eat the feast?”
13 Jesus sent two of his followers and said to them, “Go into the city. A man carrying a jar of water will meet you. Follow him. 14 He will go into a house. Tell the owner of the house, ‘The Teacher asks that you show us the room where he and his followers can eat the Passover Feast.’ 15 The owner will show you a large room upstairs. This room is ready. Prepare the food for us there.”
16 So the followers left and went into the city. Everything happened as Jesus had said. So they prepared the Passover Feast.
17 In the evening, Jesus went to that house with the 12. 18 While they were all eating, Jesus said, “I tell you the truth. One of you will give me to my enemies—one of you eating with me now.”
19 The followers were very sad to hear this. Each one said to Jesus, “I am not the one, am I?”
20 Jesus answered, “The man who is against me is 1 of the 12. He is the 1 who dips his bread into the bowl with me. 21 The Son of Man must go and die. The Scriptures say this will happen. But how terrible it will be for the person who gives the Son of Man to be killed. It would be better for that person if he had never been born.”
The Lord’s Supper
22 While they were eating, Jesus took some bread. He thanked God for it and broke it. Then he gave it to his followers and said, “Take it. This bread is my body.”
23 Then Jesus took a cup. He thanked God for it and gave it to the followers. All the followers drank from the cup.
24 Then Jesus said, “This is my blood which begins the new[a] agreement that God makes with his people. This blood is poured out for many. 25 I tell you the truth. I will not drink of this fruit of the vine[b] again until that day when I drink it new in the kingdom of God.”
26 They sang a hymn and went out to the Mount of Olives.
Jesus’ Followers Will All Leave Him
27 Then Jesus told the followers, “You will all lose your faith in me. It is written in the Scriptures:
‘I will kill the shepherd,
and the sheep will scatter.’ Zechariah 13:7
28 But after I rise from death, I will go ahead of you into Galilee.”
29 Peter said, “All the other followers may lose their faith. But I will not.”
30 Jesus answered, “I tell you the truth. Tonight you will say you don’t know me. You will say this three times before the rooster crows twice.”
31 But Peter answered strongly, “I will never say that I don’t know you! I will even die with you!” And all the other followers said the same thing.
Jesus Prays Alone
32 Jesus and his followers went to a place called Gethsemane. He said to his followers, “Sit here while I pray.” 33 Jesus told Peter, James, and John to come with him. Then Jesus began to be very sad and troubled. 34 He said to them, “I am full of sorrow. My heart is breaking with sadness. Stay here and watch.”
35 Jesus walked a little farther away from them. Then he fell on the ground and prayed. He prayed that, if possible, he would not have this time of suffering. 36 He prayed, “Abba,[c] Father! You can do all things. Let me not have this cup[d] of suffering. But do what you want, not what I want.”
37 Then Jesus went back to his followers. He found them asleep. He said to Peter, “Simon, why are you sleeping? You could not stay awake with me for one hour? 38 Stay awake and pray that you will not be tempted. Your spirit wants to do what is right, but your body is weak.”
39 Again Jesus went away and prayed the same thing. 40 Then he went back to the followers. Again he found them asleep because their eyes were very heavy. And they did not know what to say to Jesus.
41 After Jesus prayed a third time, he went back to his followers. He said to them, “You are still sleeping and resting? That’s enough! The time has come for the Son of Man to be given to sinful people. 42 Get up! We must go. Here comes the man who has turned against me.”
Jesus Is Arrested
43 While Jesus was still speaking, Judas came up. Judas was 1 of the 12 followers. He had many people with him. They were sent from the leading priests, the teachers of the law, and the Jewish elders. Those with Judas had swords and clubs.
44 Judas had planned a signal for them. He had said, “The man I kiss is Jesus. Arrest him and guard him while you lead him away.” 45 So Judas went to Jesus and said, “Teacher!” and kissed him. 46 Then the men grabbed Jesus and arrested him. 47 One of the followers standing near drew his sword. He struck the servant of the high priest with the sword and cut off his ear.
48 Then Jesus said, “You came to get me with swords and clubs as if I were a criminal. 49 Every day I was with you teaching in the Temple. You did not arrest me there. But all these things have happened to make the Scriptures come true.” 50 Then all of Jesus’ followers left him and ran away.
51 A young man, wearing only a linen cloth, was following Jesus. The people also grabbed him. 52 But the cloth he was wearing came off, and he ran away naked.
Jesus Before the Leaders
53 The people who arrested Jesus led him to the house of the high priest. All the leading priests, the Jewish elders, and the teachers of the law were gathered there. 54 Peter followed far behind and entered the courtyard of the high priest’s house. There he sat with the guards, warming himself by the fire.
55 The leading priests and all the Jewish council tried to find something that Jesus had done wrong so they could kill him. But the council could find no proof against him. 56 Many people came and told false things about him. But all said different things—none of them agreed.
57 Then some men stood up and lied about Jesus. They said, 58 “We heard this man say, ‘I will destroy this Temple that men made. And three days later, I will build another Temple—a Temple not made by men.’” 59 But even the things these men said did not agree.
60 Then the high priest stood before them and said to Jesus, “Aren’t you going to answer the charges these men bring against you?” 61 But Jesus said nothing. He did not answer.
The high priest asked Jesus another question: “Are you the Christ, the Son of the blessed God?”
62 Jesus answered, “I am. And in the future you will see the Son of Man sitting at the right side of the Powerful One. And you will see the Son of Man coming on clouds in the sky.”
63 When the high priest heard this, he was very angry. He tore his clothes and said, “We don’t need any more witnesses! 64 You all heard him say these things against God. What do you think?”
They all said that Jesus was guilty and should be killed. 65 Some of the people there spit at Jesus. They covered his eyes and hit him with their fists. They said, “Prove that you are a prophet!” Then the guards led Jesus away and beat him.
Peter Says He Doesn’t Know Jesus
66 Peter was still in the courtyard when a servant girl of the high priest came there. 67 She saw Peter warming himself at the fire. She looked closely at him.
Then the girl said, “You were with Jesus, that man from Nazareth.”
68 But Peter said that he was never with Jesus. He said, “I don’t know or understand what you are talking about.” Then Peter left and went toward the entrance of the courtyard.[e]
69 The servant girl saw Peter there. Again she said to the people who were standing there, “This man is one of those who followed Jesus.” 70 Again Peter said that it was not true.
A short time later, some people were standing near Peter. They said, “We know you are one of those who followed Jesus. You are from Galilee, too.”
71 Then Peter began to curse. He said, “I swear that I don’t know this man you’re talking about!”
72 As soon as Peter said this, the rooster crowed the second time. Then Peter remembered what Jesus had told him: “Before the rooster crows twice, you will say three times that you don’t know me.” Then Peter was very sad and began to cry.
