Conspiración para arrestar a Jesús(A)
14 Faltaban dos días para la fiesta de la Pascua, cuando se come el pan sin levadura. Los jefes de los sacerdotes y los maestros de la ley buscaban la manera de arrestar a Jesús por medio de algún engaño, y matarlo. 2 Pues algunos decían:
—No durante la fiesta, para que la gente no se alborote.
Una mujer derrama perfume sobre Jesús(B)
3 Jesús había ido a Betania, a casa de Simón, al que llamaban el leproso. Mientras estaba sentado a la mesa, llegó una mujer que llevaba un frasco de alabastro lleno de perfume de nardo puro, de mucho valor. Rompió el frasco y derramó el perfume sobre la cabeza de Jesús. 4 Algunos de los presentes se enojaron, y se dijeron unos a otros:
—¿Por qué se ha desperdiciado este perfume? 5 Podía haberse vendido por el equivalente al salario de trescientos días, para ayudar a los pobres.
Y criticaban a aquella mujer.
6 Pero Jesús dijo:
—Déjenla; ¿por qué la molestan? Ha hecho una obra buena conmigo. 7 Pues a los pobres siempre los tendrán entre ustedes, y pueden hacerles bien cuando quieran; pero a mí no siempre me van a tener. 8 Esta mujer ha hecho lo que ha podido: ha perfumado mi cuerpo de antemano para mi entierro. 9 Les aseguro que en cualquier lugar del mundo donde se anuncie la buena noticia, se hablará también de lo que hizo esta mujer, y así será recordada.
Judas traiciona a Jesús(C)
10 Judas Iscariote, uno de los doce discípulos, fue a ver a los jefes de los sacerdotes para entregarles a Jesús. 11 Al oírlo, se alegraron y prometieron darle dinero a Judas, que comenzó a buscar el momento más oportuno de entregar a Jesús.
La Cena del Señor(D)
12 El primer día de la fiesta en que se comía el pan sin levadura, cuando se sacrificaba el cordero de Pascua, los discípulos de Jesús le preguntaron:
—¿Dónde quieres que vayamos a prepararte la cena de Pascua?
13 Entonces envió a dos de sus discípulos, diciéndoles:
—Vayan a la ciudad. Allí encontrarán a un hombre que lleva un cántaro de agua; síganlo, 14 y donde entre, digan al dueño de la casa: “El Maestro pregunta: ¿Cuál es el cuarto donde voy a comer con mis discípulos la cena de Pascua?” 15 Él les mostrará en el piso alto un cuarto grande, arreglado y ya listo para la cena. Prepárennos allí lo necesario.
16 Los discípulos salieron y fueron a la ciudad. Lo encontraron todo como Jesús les había dicho, y prepararon la cena de Pascua.
17 Al anochecer llegó Jesús con los doce discípulos. 18 Mientras estaban a la mesa, comiendo, Jesús les dijo:
—Les aseguro que uno de ustedes, que está comiendo conmigo, me va a traicionar.
19 Ellos se pusieron tristes, y comenzaron a preguntarle uno por uno:
—¿Acaso seré yo?
20 Jesús les contestó:
—Es uno de los doce, que está mojando el pan en el mismo plato que yo. 21 El Hijo del hombre ha de recorrer el camino que dicen las Escrituras; pero ¡ay de aquel que lo traiciona! Hubiera sido mejor para él no haber nacido.
22 Mientras comían, Jesús tomó en sus manos el pan y, habiendo pronunciado la bendición, lo partió y se lo dio a ellos, diciendo:
—Tomen, esto es mi cuerpo.
23 Luego tomó en sus manos una copa y, habiendo dado gracias a Dios, se la pasó a ellos, y todos bebieron. 24 Les dijo:
—Esto es mi sangre, con la que se confirma la alianza, sangre que es derramada en favor de muchos. 25 Les aseguro que no volveré a beber del producto de la vid, hasta el día en que beba el vino nuevo en el reino de Dios.
Jesús anuncia que Pedro lo negará(E)
26 Después de cantar los salmos, se fueron al Monte de los Olivos. 27 Jesús les dijo:
—Todos ustedes van a perder su fe en mí. Así lo dicen las Escrituras: “Mataré al pastor, y las ovejas se dispersarán.” 28 Pero cuando yo resucite, los volveré a reunir en Galilea.
29 Pedro le dijo:
—Aunque todos pierdan su fe, yo no.
30 Jesús le contestó:
—Te aseguro que esta misma noche, antes que cante el gallo por segunda vez, me negarás tres veces.
31 Pero él insistía:
—Aunque tenga que morir contigo, no te negaré.
Y todos decían lo mismo.
Jesús ora en Getsemaní(F)
32 Luego fueron a un lugar llamado Getsemaní. Jesús dijo a sus discípulos:
—Siéntense aquí, mientras yo voy a orar.
33 Y se llevó a Pedro, a Santiago y a Juan, y comenzó a sentirse muy afligido y angustiado. 34 Les dijo:
—Siento en mi alma una tristeza de muerte. Quédense ustedes aquí, y permanezcan despiertos.
35 En seguida Jesús se fue un poco más adelante, se inclinó hasta tocar el suelo con la frente, y pidió a Dios que, de ser posible, no le llegara ese momento. 36 En su oración decía: «Abbá, Padre, para ti todo es posible: líbrame de este trago amargo; pero que no se haga lo que yo quiero, sino lo que quieres tú.»
37 Luego volvió a donde ellos estaban, y los encontró dormidos. Le dijo a Pedro:
—Simón, ¿estás durmiendo? ¿Ni siquiera una hora pudiste mantenerte despierto? 38 Manténganse despiertos y oren, para que no caigan en tentación. Ustedes tienen buena voluntad, pero son débiles.
39 Se fue otra vez, y oró repitiendo las mismas palabras. 40 Cuando volvió, encontró otra vez dormidos a los discípulos, porque sus ojos se les cerraban de sueño. Y no sabían qué contestarle. 41 Volvió por tercera vez, y les dijo:
—¿Siguen ustedes durmiendo y descansando? Ya basta, ha llegado la hora en que el Hijo del hombre va a ser entregado en manos de los pecadores. 42 Levántense, vámonos; ya se acerca el que me traiciona.
Arrestan a Jesús(G)
43 Todavía estaba hablando Jesús cuando Judas, uno de los doce discípulos, llegó acompañado de mucha gente armada con espadas y con palos. Iban de parte de los jefes de los sacerdotes, de los maestros de la ley y de los ancianos. 44 Judas, el traidor, les había dado una contraseña, diciéndoles: «Al que yo bese, ése es; arréstenlo y llévenselo bien sujeto.» 45 Así que se acercó a Jesús y le dijo:
—¡Maestro!
Y lo besó. 46 Entonces le echaron mano a Jesús y lo arrestaron.
47 Pero uno de los que estaban allí sacó su espada y le cortó una oreja al criado del sumo sacerdote. 48 Y Jesús preguntó a la gente:
—¿Por qué han venido ustedes con espadas y con palos a arrestarme, como si yo fuera un bandido? 49 Todos los días he estado entre ustedes enseñando en el templo, y nunca me arrestaron. Pero esto sucede para que se cumplan las Escrituras.
50 Todos los discípulos dejaron solo a Jesús, y huyeron. 51 Pero un joven lo seguía, cubierto sólo con una sábana. A éste lo agarraron, 52 pero él soltó la sábana y escapó desnudo.
Jesús ante la Junta Suprema(H)
53 Llevaron entonces a Jesús ante el sumo sacerdote, y se juntaron todos los jefes de los sacerdotes, los ancianos y los maestros de la ley. 54 Pedro lo siguió de lejos hasta dentro del patio de la casa del sumo sacerdote, y se quedó sentado con los guardianes del templo, calentándose junto al fuego.
55 Los jefes de los sacerdotes y toda la Junta Suprema buscaban alguna prueba para condenar a muerte a Jesús; pero no la encontraban. 56 Porque aunque muchos presentaban falsos testimonios contra él, se contradecían unos a otros. 57 Algunos se levantaron y lo acusaron falsamente, diciendo:
58 —Nosotros lo hemos oído decir: “Yo voy a destruir este templo que hicieron los hombres, y en tres días levantaré otro no hecho por los hombres.”
59 Pero ni aun así estaban de acuerdo en lo que decían.
60 Entonces el sumo sacerdote se levantó en medio de todos, y preguntó a Jesús:
—¿No contestas nada? ¿Qué es esto que están diciendo contra ti?
61 Pero Jesús se quedó callado, sin contestar nada. El sumo sacerdote volvió a preguntarle:
—¿Eres tú el Mesías, el Hijo del Dios bendito?
62 Jesús le dijo:
—Sí, yo soy. Y ustedes verán al Hijo del hombre sentado a la derecha del Todopoderoso, y viniendo en las nubes del cielo.
63 Entonces el sumo sacerdote se rasgó las ropas en señal de indignación, y dijo:
—¿Qué necesidad tenemos de más testigos? 64 Ustedes lo han oído decir palabras ofensivas contra Dios. ¿Qué les parece?
Todos estuvieron de acuerdo en que era culpable y debía morir.
65 Algunos comenzaron a escupirlo, y a taparle los ojos y golpearlo, diciéndole:
—¡Adivina quién te pegó!
Y los guardianes del templo le pegaron en la cara.
Pedro niega conocer a Jesús(I)
66 Pedro estaba abajo, en el patio. En esto llegó una de las sirvientas del sumo sacerdote; 67 y al ver a Pedro, que se estaba calentando junto al fuego, se quedó mirándolo y le dijo:
—Tú también andabas con Jesús, el de Nazaret.
68 Pedro lo negó, diciendo:
—No lo conozco, ni sé de qué estás hablando.
Y salió fuera, a la entrada. Entonces cantó un gallo. 69 La sirvienta vio otra vez a Pedro y comenzó a decir a los demás:
—Éste es uno de ellos.
70 Pero él volvió a negarlo. Poco después, los que estaban allí dijeron de nuevo a Pedro:
—Seguro que tú eres uno de ellos, pues también eres de Galilea.
71 Entonces Pedro comenzó a jurar y perjurar, diciendo:
—¡No conozco a ese hombre de quien ustedes están hablando!
72 En aquel mismo momento cantó el gallo por segunda vez, y Pedro se acordó de que Jesús le había dicho: «Antes que cante el gallo por segunda vez, me negarás tres veces.» Y se echó a llorar.

Una mujer unge a Jesús en Betania(A)(B)
14 Faltaban solo dos días para la Pascua y para la fiesta de los Panes sin levadura. Los jefes de los sacerdotes y los maestros de la Ley buscaban con artimañas cómo arrestar a Jesús para matarlo. 2 Por eso decían: «No durante la fiesta, no sea que se amotine el pueblo».
3 En Betania, mientras estaba él sentado a la mesa en casa de Simón, el que había tenido una enfermedad en la piel, llegó una mujer con un frasco de alabastro lleno de un perfume muy costoso, hecho de nardo puro. Rompió el frasco y derramó el perfume sobre la cabeza de Jesús.
4 Algunos de los presentes comentaban indignados:
—¿Para qué este desperdicio de perfume? 5 Podía haberse vendido por el salario de más de un año de trabajo[a] para dárselo a los pobres.
Y la reprendían con severidad.
6 —Déjenla en paz —dijo Jesús—. ¿Por qué la molestan? Ella ha hecho una obra hermosa conmigo. 7 A los pobres siempre los tendrán con ustedes, y podrán ayudarlos cuando quieran; pero a mí no me van a tener siempre. 8 Ella hizo lo que pudo. Ungió mi cuerpo de antemano, preparándolo para la sepultura. 9 Les aseguro que en cualquier parte del mundo donde se predique el evangelio, se contará también, en memoria de esta mujer, lo que ella hizo.
10 Judas Iscariote, uno de los doce, fue a los jefes de los sacerdotes para entregarles a Jesús. 11 Ellos se alegraron al oírlo y prometieron darle dinero. Así que él buscaba la ocasión propicia para entregarlo.

12 El primer día de la fiesta de los Panes sin levadura, cuando se acostumbraba a sacrificar el cordero de la Pascua, los discípulos preguntaron a Jesús:
—¿Dónde quieres que vayamos a hacer los preparativos para que comas la Pascua?
13 Él envió a dos de sus discípulos con este encargo: «Vayan a la ciudad y les saldrá al encuentro un hombre que lleva un cántaro de agua. Síganlo, 14 y allí donde entre díganle al dueño: “El Maestro pregunta: ¿dónde está mi sala en la que voy a comer la Pascua con mis discípulos?”». 15 Él les mostrará en la planta alta una sala amplia, amueblada y arreglada. Preparen allí nuestra cena.
16 Los discípulos salieron, entraron en la ciudad y encontraron todo tal y como les había dicho Jesús. Así que prepararon la Pascua.
17 Al anochecer, llegó Jesús con los doce. 18 Mientras estaban sentados a la mesa comiendo, dijo:
—Les aseguro que uno de ustedes, que está comiendo conmigo, me va a traicionar.
19 Ellos se pusieron tristes y uno tras otro empezaron a preguntarle:
—¿Acaso seré yo?
20 —Es uno de los doce —contestó—, uno que moja el pan conmigo en el plato. 21 El Hijo del hombre se irá, tal como está escrito de él, pero ¡ay de aquel que lo traiciona! Más le valdría a ese hombre no haber nacido.
22 Mientras comían, Jesús tomó pan y lo bendijo. Luego lo partió y se lo dio a ellos, diciéndoles:
—Tomen; esto es mi cuerpo.
23 Después tomó una copa, dio gracias, se la pasó a ellos y todos bebieron de ella.
24 —Esto es mi sangre del pacto[b] que es derramada por muchos —dijo—. 25 Les aseguro que no volveré a beber del fruto de la vid hasta aquel día en que beba el vino nuevo en el reino de Dios.
26 Después de cantar los salmos, salieron al monte de los Olivos.
Jesús predice la negación de Pedro(E)
27 —Todos ustedes me abandonarán —dijo Jesús—, porque está escrito:
»“Heriré al pastor
y se dispersarán las ovejas”.[c]
28 Pero después de que yo resucite, iré delante de ustedes a Galilea.
29 —Aunque todos te abandonen, yo no —declaró Pedro.
30 —Te aseguro —le contestó Jesús— que hoy, esta misma noche, antes de que el gallo cante por segunda vez,[d] me negarás tres veces.
31 —Aunque tenga que morir contigo —insistió Pedro con vehemencia—, jamás te negaré.
Y los demás dijeron lo mismo.
Getsemaní(F)
32 Fueron a un lugar llamado Getsemaní y Jesús dijo a sus discípulos: «Siéntense aquí mientras yo oro». 33 Se llevó a Pedro, a Santiago y a Juan, y comenzó a sentir temor y angustia. 34 «Es tal la angustia que me invade que me siento morir —dijo—. Quédense aquí y manténganse despiertos».
35 Yendo un poco más allá, se postró en tierra y empezó a orar que, de ser posible, no tuviera él que pasar por aquella hora. 36 Decía: «Abba, Padre, todo es posible para ti. No me hagas beber este trago amargo;[e] pero no sea lo que yo quiero, sino lo que quieres tú».
37 Luego volvió a sus discípulos y los encontró dormidos. «Simón —dijo a Pedro—, ¿estás dormido? ¿No pudiste mantenerte despierto ni una hora? 38 Permanezcan despiertos y oren para que no caigan en tentación. El espíritu está dispuesto, pero el cuerpo es débil».
39 Una vez más se retiró e hizo la misma oración. 40 Cuando volvió, otra vez los encontró dormidos, porque se les cerraban los ojos de sueño. No sabían qué decirle. 41 Al volver por tercera vez, les dijo: «¿Siguen durmiendo y descansando? ¡Se acabó! Ha llegado la hora. Miren, el Hijo del hombre va a ser entregado en manos de pecadores. 42 ¡Levántense! ¡Vámonos! ¡Ahí viene el que me traiciona!».
Arresto de Jesús(G)
43 Todavía estaba hablando Jesús cuando apareció Judas, uno de los doce. Lo acompañaba una turba armada con espadas y palos, enviada por los jefes de los sacerdotes, los maestros de la Ley y los líderes religiosos.
44 El traidor había dado esta contraseña: «Al que le dé un beso, ese es; arréstenlo y llévenselo bien asegurado». 45 Tan pronto como llegó, Judas se acercó a Jesús y dijo:
—¡Rabí!
Y lo besó.
46 Entonces los hombres prendieron a Jesús. 47 Pero uno de los que estaban ahí desenfundó la espada e hirió al siervo del sumo sacerdote, cortándole una oreja.
48 —¿Acaso soy un bandido[f] —dijo Jesús—, para que vengan con espadas y palos a arrestarme? 49 Todos los días estaba con ustedes, enseñando en el Templo, y no me arrestaron. Pero es preciso que se cumplan las Escrituras.
50 Entonces todos lo abandonaron y huyeron. 51 Cierto joven que se cubría con solo una sábana iba siguiendo a Jesús. Lo detuvieron, 52 pero él soltó la sábana y escapó desnudo.
Jesús ante el Consejo(H)(I)
53 Llevaron a Jesús ante el sumo sacerdote y se reunieron allí todos los jefes de los sacerdotes, los líderes religiosos y los maestros de la Ley. 54 Pedro lo siguió de lejos hasta dentro del patio del sumo sacerdote. Allí se sentó con los guardias y se calentó junto al fuego.
55 Los jefes de los sacerdotes y el Consejo en pleno buscaban alguna prueba contra Jesús para poder condenarlo a muerte, pero no la encontraban. 56 Muchos testificaban falsamente contra él, pero sus declaraciones no coincidían. 57 Entonces unos decidieron dar este falso testimonio contra él:
58 —Nosotros le oímos decir: “Destruiré este Templo hecho por hombres y en tres días construiré otro, no hecho por hombres”.
59 Pero ni aun así concordaban sus declaraciones.
60 Poniéndose en pie en el medio, el sumo sacerdote interrogó a Jesús:
—¿No vas a responder? ¿Qué significan estas denuncias en tu contra?
61 Pero Jesús se quedó callado y no contestó nada.
—¿Eres el Cristo, el Hijo del Bendito? —preguntó de nuevo el sumo sacerdote.
62 —Sí, yo soy —dijo Jesús—. Y ustedes verán al Hijo del hombre sentado a la derecha del Todopoderoso y viniendo en las nubes del cielo.
63 —¿Para qué necesitamos más testigos? —dijo el sumo sacerdote, rasgándose las vestiduras—. 64 ¡Ustedes han oído la blasfemia! ¿Qué les parece?
Todos ellos lo condenaron como digno de muerte. 65 Algunos comenzaron a escupirlo y, luego de vendarle sus ojos, le daban puñetazos.
—¡Profetiza! —gritaban.
Los guardias también lo abofeteaban.
Pedro niega a Jesús(J)
66 Mientras Pedro estaba abajo en el patio, pasó una de las criadas del sumo sacerdote. 67 Cuando vio a Pedro calentándose, se fijó en él.
—Tú también estabas con ese Nazareno, con Jesús —le dijo ella.
68 Pero él lo negó:
—No lo conozco. Ni siquiera sé de qué estás hablando.
Y salió a la entrada; en ese momento el gallo cantó.
69 Cuando la criada lo vio allí, dijo de nuevo a los presentes:
—Este es uno de ellos.
70 Él lo volvió a negar.
Poco después, los que estaban allí dijeron a Pedro:
—Seguro que eres uno de ellos, pues eres galileo.
71 Él comenzó a echarse maldiciones.
—¡No conozco a ese hombre del que hablan! —juró.
72 Al instante, el gallo cantó por segunda vez. Pedro se acordó de lo que Jesús le había dicho: «Antes de que el gallo cante por segunda vez, me negarás tres veces». Y se echó a llorar.

14 It was now two days before the Passover and the Feast of Unleavened Bread, and the chief priests and the scribes were all the while seeking to arrest [Jesus] by secrecy and deceit and put [Him] to death,
2 For they kept saying, It must not be during the Feast, for fear that there might be a riot of the people.
3 And while He was in Bethany, [a guest] in the house of Simon the leper, as He was reclining [at table], a woman came with an alabaster jar of ointment ([a]perfume) of pure nard, very costly and precious; and she broke the jar and poured [the perfume] over His head.
4 But there were some who were moved with indignation and said to themselves, To what purpose was the ointment ([b]perfume) thus wasted?
5 For it was possible to have sold this [perfume] for more than 300 denarii [a laboring man’s wages for a year] and to have given [the money] to the poor. And they censured and reproved her.
6 But Jesus said, Let her alone; why are you troubling her? She has done a good and beautiful thing to Me [praiseworthy and noble].
7 For you always have the poor with you, and whenever you wish you can do good to them; but you will not always have Me.(A)
8 She has done what she could; she came beforehand to anoint My body for the burial.
9 And surely I tell you, wherever the good news (the Gospel) is proclaimed in the entire world, what she has done will be told in memory of her.
10 Then Judas Iscariot, who was one of the Twelve [apostles], went off to the chief priests in order to betray and hand Him over to them.
11 And when they heard it, they rejoiced and were delighted, and they promised to give him money. And he [busying himself continually] sought an opportunity to betray Him.
12 On the first day [of the Feast] of Unleavened Bread, when [as was customary] they killed the Passover lamb, [Jesus’] disciples said to Him, Where do You wish us to go [and] prepare the Passover [supper] for You to eat?
13 And He sent two of His disciples and said to them, Go into the city, and a man carrying an [earthen] jar or pitcher of water will meet you; follow him.
14 And whatever [house] he enters, say to the master of the house, The Teacher says: Where is My guest room, where I may eat the Passover [supper] with My disciples?
15 And he will [himself] show you a large upper room, furnished [with carpets and with dining couches properly spread] and ready; there prepare for us.
16 Then the disciples set out and came to the city and found [everything] just as He had told them; and they prepared the Passover.
17 And when it was evening, He came with the Twelve [apostles].
18 And while they were at the table eating, Jesus said, Surely I say to you, one of you will betray Me, [one] who is eating [here] with Me.(B)
19 And they began to show that they were sad and hurt, and to say to Him one after another, Is it I? or, It is not I, is it?
20 He replied to them, It is one of the Twelve [apostles], one who is dipping [bread] into the [same deep] dish with Me.
21 For the Son of Man is going as it stands written concerning Him; but woe to that man by whom the Son of Man is betrayed! It would have been good (profitable and wholesome) for that man if he had never been born.(C)
22 And while they were eating, He took a loaf [of bread], praised God and gave thanks and asked Him to bless it to their use. [Then] He broke [it] and gave to them and said, Take. Eat. This is My body.
23 He also took a cup [of the juice of grapes], and when He had given thanks, He gave [it] to them, and they all drank of it.
24 And He said to them, This is My blood [which ratifies] the new covenant, [the blood] which is being poured out for (on account of) many.(D)
25 Solemnly and surely I tell you, I shall not again drink of the fruit of the vine till that day when I drink it [c]of a new and a higher quality in God’s kingdom.
26 And when they had sung a hymn, they went out to the Mount of Olives.
27 And Jesus said to them, You will all fall away this night [that is, you will be caused to stumble and will begin to distrust and desert Me], for it stands written, I will strike the Shepherd, and the sheep will be scattered.(E)
28 But after I am raised [to life], I will go before you into Galilee.
29 But Peter said to Him, Even if they all fall away and are caused to stumble and distrust and desert You, yet I will not [do so]!
30 And Jesus said to him, Truly I tell you, this very night, before a cock crows twice, you will utterly deny Me [disclaiming all connection with Me] three times.
31 But [Peter] said more vehemently and repeatedly, [Even] if it should be necessary for me to die with You, I will not deny or disown You! And they all kept saying the same thing.
32 Then they went to a place called Gethsemane, and He said to His disciples, Sit down here while I pray.
33 And He took with Him Peter and James and John, and began to be [d]struck with terror and amazement and deeply troubled and depressed.
34 And He said to them, My soul is exceedingly sad (overwhelmed with grief) so that it almost kills Me! Remain here and keep awake and be watching.
35 And going a little farther, He fell on the ground and kept praying that if it were possible the [[e]fatal] hour might pass from Him.
36 And He was saying, Abba, [which means] Father, everything is possible for You. Take away this cup from Me; yet not what I will, but what You [will].
37 And He came back and found them sleeping, and He said to Peter, Simon, are you asleep? Have you not the strength to keep awake and watch [with Me for] one hour?
38 Keep awake and watch and pray [constantly], that you may not enter into temptation; the spirit indeed is willing, but the flesh is weak.
39 He went away again and prayed, saying the same words.
40 And again He came back and found them sleeping, for their eyes were very heavy; and they did not know what answer to give Him.
41 And He came back a third time and said to them, Are you still sleeping and resting? It is enough [of that]! The hour has come. The Son of Man is betrayed into the hands of sinful men (men [f]whose way or nature is to act in opposition to God).
42 Get up, let us be going! See, My betrayer is at hand!
43 And at once, while He was still speaking, Judas came, one of the Twelve [apostles], and with him a crowd of men with swords and clubs, [who came] from the chief priests and the scribes and the elders [of the Sanhedrin].
44 Now the betrayer had given them a signal, saying, The One I shall kiss is [the Man]; seize Him and lead [Him] away safely [so as to prevent His escape].
45 And when he came, he went up to Jesus immediately and said, Master! Master! and he [g]embraced Him and kissed Him fervently.
46 And they threw their hands on Him and arrested Him.
47 But one of the bystanders drew his sword and struck the bond servant of the high priest and cut off his ear.
48 And Jesus said to them, Have you come out with swords and clubs as [you would] against a robber to capture Me?
49 I was with you daily in the temple [[h]porches and courts] teaching, and you did not seize Me; but [this has happened] that the Scriptures might be fulfilled.
50 Then [His disciples], forsaking Him, fled, all [of them].
51 And a young man was following Him, with nothing but a linen cloth ([i]sheet) thrown about [his] naked [body]; and they laid hold of him,
52 But, leaving behind the linen cloth ([j]sheet), he fled from them naked.
53 And they led Jesus away to the high priest, and all the chief priests and the elders and the scribes were gathered together.
54 And Peter followed Him at a distance, even right into the courtyard of the high priest. And he was sitting [[k]in the firelight] with the guards and warming himself at the fire.
55 Now the chief priests and the entire council (the Sanhedrin) were constantly seeking [to get] testimony against Jesus with a view to condemning Him and putting Him to death, but they did not find any.
56 For many were repeatedly bearing false witness against Him, but their testimonies did not agree.
57 And some stood up and were bearing false witness against Him, saying,
58 We heard Him say, I will destroy this temple (sanctuary) which is made with hands, and in three days I will build another, made without hands.
59 Still not even [in this] did their testimony agree.
60 And the high priest stood up in the midst and asked Jesus, Have You not even one answer to make? What [about this which] these [men] are testifying against You?
61 But He kept still and did not answer at all. Again the high priest asked Him, Are You the Christ (the Messiah, the Anointed One), the Son of the Blessed?
62 And Jesus said, I Am; and you will [all] see the Son of Man seated at the right hand of Power ([l]the Almighty) and coming on the clouds of heaven.(F)
63 Then the high priest tore his garments and said, What need have we for more witnesses?(G)
64 You have heard His blasphemy. What is your decision? And they all condemned Him as being guilty and deserving of death.(H)
65 And some of them began to spit on Him and to blindfold Him and to strike Him with their fists, saying to Him, Prophesy! And the guards received Him with blows and by slapping Him.
66 While Peter was down below in the courtyard, one of the [serving] maids of the high priest came;
67 And when she saw Peter warming himself, she gazed intently at him and said, You were with Jesus of Nazareth too.
68 But he denied it [m]falsely and disowned Him, saying, I neither know nor understand what you say. Then he went outside [the courtyard and was] into the [n]vestibule. [o]And a cock crowed.
69 And the maidservant saw him, and began again to say to the bystanders, This [man] is [one] of them.
70 But again he denied it [p]falsely and disowned Him. And after a short while, again the bystanders said to Peter, [q]Really, you are one of them, for you are a Galilean [r]and your dialect shows it.
71 Then he commenced invoking a curse on himself [should he not be telling the truth] and swearing, I do not know the Man about Whom you are talking!
72 And at once for the second time a cock crowed. And Peter remembered how Jesus said to him, Before a cock crows twice, you will [s]utterly deny Me [disclaiming all connection with Me] three times. And [t]having put his thought upon it [and remembering], he broke down and wept aloud and [u]lamented.

Jesus Anointed at Bethany(A)(B)(C)
14 Now the Passover(D) and the Festival of Unleavened Bread were only two days away, and the chief priests and the teachers of the law were scheming to arrest Jesus secretly and kill him.(E) 2 “But not during the festival,” they said, “or the people may riot.”
3 While he was in Bethany,(F) reclining at the table in the home of Simon the Leper, a woman came with an alabaster jar of very expensive perfume, made of pure nard. She broke the jar and poured the perfume on his head.(G)
4 Some of those present were saying indignantly to one another, “Why this waste of perfume? 5 It could have been sold for more than a year’s wages[a] and the money given to the poor.” And they rebuked her harshly.
6 “Leave her alone,” said Jesus. “Why are you bothering her? She has done a beautiful thing to me. 7 The poor you will always have with you,[b] and you can help them any time you want.(H) But you will not always have me. 8 She did what she could. She poured perfume on my body beforehand to prepare for my burial.(I) 9 Truly I tell you, wherever the gospel is preached throughout the world,(J) what she has done will also be told, in memory of her.”
10 Then Judas Iscariot, one of the Twelve,(K) went to the chief priests to betray Jesus to them.(L) 11 They were delighted to hear this and promised to give him money. So he watched for an opportunity to hand him over.
The Last Supper(M)(N)
12 On the first day of the Festival of Unleavened Bread, when it was customary to sacrifice the Passover lamb,(O) Jesus’ disciples asked him, “Where do you want us to go and make preparations for you to eat the Passover?”
13 So he sent two of his disciples, telling them, “Go into the city, and a man carrying a jar of water will meet you. Follow him. 14 Say to the owner of the house he enters, ‘The Teacher asks: Where is my guest room, where I may eat the Passover with my disciples?’ 15 He will show you a large room upstairs,(P) furnished and ready. Make preparations for us there.”
16 The disciples left, went into the city and found things just as Jesus had told them. So they prepared the Passover.
17 When evening came, Jesus arrived with the Twelve. 18 While they were reclining at the table eating, he said, “Truly I tell you, one of you will betray me—one who is eating with me.”
19 They were saddened, and one by one they said to him, “Surely you don’t mean me?”
20 “It is one of the Twelve,” he replied, “one who dips bread into the bowl with me.(Q) 21 The Son of Man(R) will go just as it is written about him. But woe to that man who betrays the Son of Man! It would be better for him if he had not been born.”
22 While they were eating, Jesus took bread, and when he had given thanks, he broke it(S) and gave it to his disciples, saying, “Take it; this is my body.”
23 Then he took a cup, and when he had given thanks, he gave it to them, and they all drank from it.(T)
24 “This is my blood of the[c] covenant,(U) which is poured out for many,” he said to them. 25 “Truly I tell you, I will not drink again from the fruit of the vine until that day when I drink it new in the kingdom of God.”(V)
26 When they had sung a hymn, they went out to the Mount of Olives.(W)
Jesus Predicts Peter’s Denial(X)
27 “You will all fall away,” Jesus told them, “for it is written:
28 But after I have risen, I will go ahead of you into Galilee.”(Z)
29 Peter declared, “Even if all fall away, I will not.”
30 “Truly I tell you,” Jesus answered, “today—yes, tonight—before the rooster crows twice[e] you yourself will disown me three times.”(AA)
31 But Peter insisted emphatically, “Even if I have to die with you,(AB) I will never disown you.” And all the others said the same.
Gethsemane(AC)
32 They went to a place called Gethsemane, and Jesus said to his disciples, “Sit here while I pray.” 33 He took Peter, James and John(AD) along with him, and he began to be deeply distressed and troubled. 34 “My soul is overwhelmed with sorrow to the point of death,”(AE) he said to them. “Stay here and keep watch.”
35 Going a little farther, he fell to the ground and prayed that if possible the hour(AF) might pass from him. 36 “Abba,[f] Father,”(AG) he said, “everything is possible for you. Take this cup(AH) from me. Yet not what I will, but what you will.”(AI)
37 Then he returned to his disciples and found them sleeping. “Simon,” he said to Peter, “are you asleep? Couldn’t you keep watch for one hour? 38 Watch and pray so that you will not fall into temptation.(AJ) The spirit is willing, but the flesh is weak.”(AK)
39 Once more he went away and prayed the same thing. 40 When he came back, he again found them sleeping, because their eyes were heavy. They did not know what to say to him.
41 Returning the third time, he said to them, “Are you still sleeping and resting? Enough! The hour(AL) has come. Look, the Son of Man is delivered into the hands of sinners. 42 Rise! Let us go! Here comes my betrayer!”
Jesus Arrested(AM)
43 Just as he was speaking, Judas,(AN) one of the Twelve, appeared. With him was a crowd armed with swords and clubs, sent from the chief priests, the teachers of the law, and the elders.
44 Now the betrayer had arranged a signal with them: “The one I kiss is the man; arrest him and lead him away under guard.” 45 Going at once to Jesus, Judas said, “Rabbi!”(AO) and kissed him. 46 The men seized Jesus and arrested him. 47 Then one of those standing near drew his sword and struck the servant of the high priest, cutting off his ear.
48 “Am I leading a rebellion,” said Jesus, “that you have come out with swords and clubs to capture me? 49 Every day I was with you, teaching in the temple courts,(AP) and you did not arrest me. But the Scriptures must be fulfilled.”(AQ) 50 Then everyone deserted him and fled.(AR)
51 A young man, wearing nothing but a linen garment, was following Jesus. When they seized him, 52 he fled naked, leaving his garment behind.
Jesus Before the Sanhedrin(AS)(AT)
53 They took Jesus to the high priest, and all the chief priests, the elders and the teachers of the law came together. 54 Peter followed him at a distance, right into the courtyard of the high priest.(AU) There he sat with the guards and warmed himself at the fire.(AV)
55 The chief priests and the whole Sanhedrin(AW) were looking for evidence against Jesus so that they could put him to death, but they did not find any. 56 Many testified falsely against him, but their statements did not agree.
57 Then some stood up and gave this false testimony against him: 58 “We heard him say, ‘I will destroy this temple made with human hands and in three days will build another,(AX) not made with hands.’” 59 Yet even then their testimony did not agree.
60 Then the high priest stood up before them and asked Jesus, “Are you not going to answer? What is this testimony that these men are bringing against you?” 61 But Jesus remained silent and gave no answer.(AY)
Again the high priest asked him, “Are you the Messiah, the Son of the Blessed One?”(AZ)
62 “I am,” said Jesus. “And you will see the Son of Man sitting at the right hand of the Mighty One and coming on the clouds of heaven.”(BA)
63 The high priest tore his clothes.(BB) “Why do we need any more witnesses?” he asked. 64 “You have heard the blasphemy. What do you think?”
They all condemned him as worthy of death.(BC) 65 Then some began to spit at him; they blindfolded him, struck him with their fists, and said, “Prophesy!” And the guards took him and beat him.(BD)
Peter Disowns Jesus(BE)
66 While Peter was below in the courtyard,(BF) one of the servant girls of the high priest came by. 67 When she saw Peter warming himself,(BG) she looked closely at him.
“You also were with that Nazarene, Jesus,”(BH) she said.
68 But he denied it. “I don’t know or understand what you’re talking about,”(BI) he said, and went out into the entryway.[g]
69 When the servant girl saw him there, she said again to those standing around, “This fellow is one of them.” 70 Again he denied it.(BJ)
After a little while, those standing near said to Peter, “Surely you are one of them, for you are a Galilean.”(BK)
71 He began to call down curses, and he swore to them, “I don’t know this man you’re talking about.”(BL)
72 Immediately the rooster crowed the second time.[h] Then Peter remembered the word Jesus had spoken to him: “Before the rooster crows twice[i] you will disown me three times.”(BM) And he broke down and wept.
