La entrada triunfal
11 Ya se acercaban a Jerusalén; y cuando estaban cerca de Betfagué y de Betania, frente al Monte de los Olivos, Jesús envió a dos de sus discípulos con este encargo: 2 «Vayan al pueblecito que está enfrente. Al entrar verán un burro atado, en el que nadie ha montado. Desátenlo y tráiganmelo. 3 Y si alguien les pregunta por qué lo hacen, díganle que el Señor lo necesita y que pronto lo devolverá».
4 Los dos discípulos obedecieron y hallaron al burrito en la calle, atado junto a una puerta. Y lo desataron. 5 Unos que estaban allí les preguntaron: «¿Por qué lo desatan?».
6 Ellos les respondieron lo que Jesús les había dicho; y los dejaron ir. 7 Y le llevaron, pues, el burro a Jesús.
Los discípulos pusieron sus mantos sobre el burro, y Jesús se montó.
8 Y muchos tendían por el camino sus mantos o ramas de árboles. 9 Y los que iban delante y los que iban detrás gritaban:
―¡Hosanna! ¡Bendito el que viene en el nombre del Señor! 10 ¡Bendito el reino que viene, que es el reino de nuestro padre David! ¡Hosanna en las alturas!
11 Ya en Jerusalén, Jesús entró al templo, miró detenidamente a su alrededor y salió. Como ya estaba avanzada la tarde, se marchó a Betania con los doce.
Jesús purifica el templo
12 A la siguiente mañana, al salir de Betania, tuvo hambre, 13 por lo que se acercó a una frondosa higuera. Esperaba hallar algunos higos, pero al hallar sólo hojas, porque no era la temporada de higos, 14 dijo al árbol: «¡Nadie más va a volver a comer jamás de tu fruto!».
Y lo oyeron los discípulos.
15 Al llegar a Jerusalén, se dirigió al templo. Allí echó fuera a los que vendían y compraban, y volcó las mesas de los que cambiaban dinero y las sillas de los que vendían palomas. 16 Y no permitía que nadie entrara al templo cargando mercancías.
17 Y se puso a enseñar. Les decía: «Las Escrituras dicen que mi templo ha de ser “casa de oración de todas las naciones”, pero ustedes lo han convertido en “cueva de ladrones”».
18 Cuando los jefes de los sacerdotes y los maestros de la ley oyeron esto, comenzaron a urdir un plan para matar a Jesús. Le tenían miedo a Jesús porque toda la gente estaba maravillada con su enseñanza.
19 Y cuando se hizo de noche, Jesús y sus discípulos salieron de la ciudad.
La higuera seca
20 A la siguiente mañana, al pasar junto a la higuera, los discípulos vieron que se había secado hasta las raíces. 21 Pedro, recordando lo que había pasado, exclamó:
―¡Maestro, mira! La higuera que maldijiste está seca.
22 Jesús respondió:
―Tengan fe en Dios. 23 Les aseguro que si alguien le dice a este monte que se mueva y se arroje al mar, y no duda que va a suceder, el monte lo obedecerá. 24 Por eso les digo que todo lo que pidan en oración, crean que lo recibirán, y así será. 25 Pero cuando oren, perdonen a los que les hayan hecho algo, para que el Padre que está en el cielo les perdone a ustedes sus pecados. 26 Pero si no perdonan, nuestro Padre que está en los cielos no les perdonará sus pecados.
La autoridad de Jesús puesta en duda
27 Vinieron nuevamente a Jerusalén. Andaba Jesús caminando por el templo cuando los jefes de los sacerdotes, los maestros de la ley y los ancianos 28 le preguntaron:
―¿Quién te dio autoridad para hacer lo que haces?
29 ―Les diré con qué autoridad hago esto —les contestó Jesús—, si ustedes me responden a otra pregunta. 30 El bautismo que Juan practicaba, ¿era de Dios o de los hombres? ¡Contéstenme!
31 Ellos deliberaron en voz baja y se decían:
―Si le respondemos que era de Dios, nos preguntará por qué no le creímos. 32 Y si decimos que era de los hombres, el pueblo se rebelará contra nosotros, porque creía que Juan era un profeta.
33 Por fin respondieron:
―No lo sabemos.
Y Jesús les contestó:
―Pues yo tampoco les diré quién me dio autoridad para hacer estas cosas.

The Triumphal Entry(A)
11 Now (B)when they drew near Jerusalem, to [a]Bethphage and Bethany, at the Mount of Olives, He sent two of His disciples; 2 and He said to them, “Go into the village opposite you; and as soon as you have entered it you will find a colt tied, on which no one has sat. Loose it and bring it. 3 And if anyone says to you, ‘Why are you doing this?’ say, ‘The Lord has need of it,’ and immediately he will send it here.”
4 So they went their way, and found [b]the colt tied by the door outside on the street, and they loosed it. 5 But some of those who stood there said to them, “What are you doing, loosing the colt?”
6 And they spoke to them just as Jesus had commanded. So they let them go. 7 Then they brought the colt to Jesus and threw their clothes on it, and He sat on it. 8 (C)And many spread their clothes on the road, and others cut down leafy branches from the trees and spread them on the road. 9 Then those who went before and those who followed cried out, saying:
“Hosanna!
(D)‘Blessed is He who comes in the name of the Lord!’
10 Blessed is the kingdom of our father David
That comes [c]in the name of the Lord!
(E)Hosanna in the highest!”
11 (F)And Jesus went into Jerusalem and into the temple. So when He had looked around at all things, as the hour was already late, He went out to Bethany with the twelve.
The Fig Tree Withered(G)
12 (H)Now the next day, when they had come out from Bethany, He was hungry. 13 (I)And seeing from afar a fig tree having leaves, He went to see if perhaps He would find something on it. When He came to it, He found nothing but leaves, for it was not the season for figs. 14 In response Jesus said to it, “Let no one eat fruit from you ever again.”
And His disciples heard it.
Jesus Cleanses the Temple(J)
15 (K)So they came to Jerusalem. Then Jesus went into the temple and began to drive out those who bought and sold in the temple, and overturned the tables of the money changers and the seats of those who sold (L)doves. 16 And He would not allow anyone to carry wares through the temple. 17 Then He taught, saying to them, “Is it not written, (M)‘My house shall be called a house of prayer for all nations’? But you have made it a (N)‘den of thieves.’ ”
18 And (O)the scribes and chief priests heard it and sought how they might destroy Him; for they feared Him, because (P)all the people were astonished at His teaching. 19 When evening had come, He went out of the city.
The Lesson of the Withered Fig Tree(Q)
20 (R)Now in the morning, as they passed by, they saw the fig tree dried up from the roots. 21 And Peter, remembering, said to Him, “Rabbi, look! The fig tree which You cursed has withered away.”
22 So Jesus answered and said to them, “Have faith in God. 23 For (S)assuredly, I say to you, whoever says to this mountain, ‘Be removed and be cast into the sea,’ and does not doubt in his heart, but believes that those things he says will be done, he will have whatever he says. 24 Therefore I say to you, (T)whatever things you ask when you pray, believe that you receive them, and you will have them.
Forgiveness and Prayer(U)
25 “And whenever you stand praying, (V)if you have anything against anyone, forgive him, that your Father in heaven may also forgive you your trespasses. 26 [d]But (W)if you do not forgive, neither will your Father in heaven forgive your trespasses.”
Jesus’ Authority Questioned(X)
27 Then they came again to Jerusalem. (Y)And as He was walking in the temple, the chief priests, the scribes, and the elders came to Him. 28 And they said to Him, “By what (Z)authority are You doing these things? And who gave You this authority to do these things?”
29 But Jesus answered and said to them, “I also will ask you one question; then answer Me, and I will tell you by what authority I do these things: 30 The (AA)baptism of John—was it from heaven or from men? Answer Me.”
31 And they reasoned among themselves, saying, “If we say, ‘From heaven,’ He will say, ‘Why then did you not believe him?’ 32 But if we say, ‘From men’ ”—they feared the people, for (AB)all counted John to have been a prophet indeed. 33 So they answered and said to Jesus, “We do not know.”
And Jesus answered and said to them, “Neither will I tell you by what authority I do these things.”

11 Cuando se acercaban a Jerusalén y llegaron a Betfagué y a Betania, junto al monte de los Olivos, Jesús envió a dos de sus discípulos 2 con este encargo: «Vayan a la aldea que tienen enfrente. Tan pronto como entren en ella, encontrarán atado un burrito, en el que nunca se ha montado nadie. Desátenlo y tráiganlo acá. 3 Y si alguien pregunta: “¿Por qué hacen eso?”, díganle: “El Señor lo necesita y enseguida lo devolverá”».
4 Fueron, encontraron un burrito afuera, en la calle, atado a un portón y lo desataron. 5 Entonces algunos de los que estaban allí preguntaron: «¿Qué hacen desatando el burrito?». 6 Ellos contestaron como Jesús había dicho y dejaron que lo desatara. 7 Llevaron, pues, el burrito a Jesús. Luego pusieron encima sus mantos y él se montó. 8 Muchos tendieron sus mantos sobre el camino; otros usaron ramas que habían cortado en los campos. 9 Tanto los que iban delante como los que iban detrás gritaban:
—¡Hosanna![a]
—¡Bendito el que viene en el nombre del Señor![b]
10 —¡Bendito el reino venidero de nuestro padre David!
—¡Hosanna en las alturas!
11 Jesús entró en Jerusalén y fue al Templo. Después de observarlo todo, como ya era tarde, salió para Betania con los doce.

12 Al día siguiente, cuando salían de Betania, Jesús tuvo hambre. 13 Viendo a lo lejos una higuera que tenía hojas, fue a ver si hallaba algún fruto. Cuando llegó a ella solo encontró hojas, porque no era tiempo de higos. 14 «¡Nadie vuelva jamás a comer fruto de ti!», dijo a la higuera. Y lo oyeron sus discípulos.
15 Llegaron, pues, a Jerusalén. Jesús entró en el Templo[c] y comenzó a echar de allí a los que compraban y vendían. Volcó las mesas de los que cambiaban dinero y los puestos de los que vendían palomas, 16 y no permitía que nadie atravesara el Templo llevando mercancías. 17 También les enseñaba con estas palabras: «¿No está escrito:
»“Mi casa será llamada
casa de oración para todos los pueblos”?[d]
Pero ustedes la han convertido en “cueva de ladrones”».[e]
18 Los jefes de los sacerdotes y los maestros de la Ley lo oyeron y comenzaron a buscar la manera de matarlo, pues le temían, ya que toda la gente se maravillaba de sus enseñanzas.
19 Cuando cayó la tarde, salieron[f] de la ciudad.

20 Por la mañana, al pasar junto a la higuera, vieron que se había secado de raíz. 21 Pedro, acordándose, dijo a Jesús:
—¡Rabí, mira, se ha secado la higuera que maldijiste!
22 —Tengan fe en Dios —respondió Jesús—. 23 Les aseguro[g] que si alguno dice a este monte: “Quítate de ahí y tírate al mar”, creyendo, sin abrigar la menor duda en el corazón de que lo que dice sucederá, lo obtendrá. 24 Por eso les digo: Crean que ya han recibido todo lo que estén pidiendo en oración y lo obtendrán. 25 Y cuando estén orando, si tienen algo contra alguien, perdónenlo, para que también su Padre que está en el cielo perdone a ustedes sus ofensas. 26 [h]
La autoridad de Jesús puesta en duda(F)
27 Llegaron de nuevo a Jerusalén y, mientras Jesús andaba por el Templo, se acercaron los jefes de los sacerdotes, los maestros de la Ley y los líderes religiosos.
28 —¿Con qué autoridad haces esto? —lo interrogaron—. ¿Quién te dio autoridad para actuar así?
29 —Yo voy a hacerles una pregunta a ustedes —respondió él—. Contéstenmela y les diré con qué autoridad hago esto: 30 El bautismo de Juan, ¿procedía del cielo o de los hombres? Respóndanme.
31 Ellos comenzaron a discutir entre sí: «Si respondemos “del cielo”, nos dirá “entonces, ¿por qué no le creyeron?”. 32 Pero si decimos “de los hombres…”». Es que temían al pueblo, porque todos consideraban que Juan era realmente un profeta. 33 Así que respondieron a Jesús:
—No lo sabemos.
Jesús dijo:
—Pues yo tampoco les voy a decir con qué autoridad hago esto.

Jesus Comes to Jerusalem as King(A)(B)
11 As they approached Jerusalem and came to Bethphage and Bethany(C) at the Mount of Olives,(D) Jesus sent two of his disciples, 2 saying to them, “Go to the village ahead of you, and just as you enter it, you will find a colt tied there, which no one has ever ridden.(E) Untie it and bring it here. 3 If anyone asks you, ‘Why are you doing this?’ say, ‘The Lord needs it and will send it back here shortly.’”
4 They went and found a colt outside in the street, tied at a doorway.(F) As they untied it, 5 some people standing there asked, “What are you doing, untying that colt?” 6 They answered as Jesus had told them to, and the people let them go. 7 When they brought the colt to Jesus and threw their cloaks over it, he sat on it. 8 Many people spread their cloaks on the road, while others spread branches they had cut in the fields. 9 Those who went ahead and those who followed shouted,
“Hosanna![a]”
10 “Blessed is the coming kingdom of our father David!”
“Hosanna in the highest heaven!”(H)
11 Jesus entered Jerusalem and went into the temple courts. He looked around at everything, but since it was already late, he went out to Bethany with the Twelve.(I)
Jesus Curses a Fig Tree and Clears the Temple Courts(J)(K)(L)
12 The next day as they were leaving Bethany, Jesus was hungry. 13 Seeing in the distance a fig tree in leaf, he went to find out if it had any fruit. When he reached it, he found nothing but leaves, because it was not the season for figs.(M) 14 Then he said to the tree, “May no one ever eat fruit from you again.” And his disciples heard him say it.
15 On reaching Jerusalem, Jesus entered the temple courts and began driving out those who were buying and selling there. He overturned the tables of the money changers and the benches of those selling doves, 16 and would not allow anyone to carry merchandise through the temple courts. 17 And as he taught them, he said, “Is it not written: ‘My house will be called a house of prayer for all nations’[c]?(N) But you have made it ‘a den of robbers.’[d]”(O)
18 The chief priests and the teachers of the law heard this and began looking for a way to kill him, for they feared him,(P) because the whole crowd was amazed at his teaching.(Q)
19 When evening came, Jesus and his disciples[e] went out of the city.(R)
20 In the morning, as they went along, they saw the fig tree withered from the roots. 21 Peter remembered and said to Jesus, “Rabbi,(S) look! The fig tree you cursed has withered!”
22 “Have faith in God,” Jesus answered. 23 “Truly[f] I tell you, if anyone says to this mountain, ‘Go, throw yourself into the sea,’ and does not doubt in their heart but believes that what they say will happen, it will be done for them.(T) 24 Therefore I tell you, whatever you ask for in prayer, believe that you have received it, and it will be yours.(U) 25 And when you stand praying, if you hold anything against anyone, forgive them, so that your Father in heaven may forgive you your sins.”(V) [26] [g]
The Authority of Jesus Questioned(W)
27 They arrived again in Jerusalem, and while Jesus was walking in the temple courts, the chief priests, the teachers of the law and the elders came to him. 28 “By what authority are you doing these things?” they asked. “And who gave you authority to do this?”
29 Jesus replied, “I will ask you one question. Answer me, and I will tell you by what authority I am doing these things. 30 John’s baptism—was it from heaven, or of human origin? Tell me!”
31 They discussed it among themselves and said, “If we say, ‘From heaven,’ he will ask, ‘Then why didn’t you believe him?’ 32 But if we say, ‘Of human origin’ …” (They feared the people, for everyone held that John really was a prophet.)(X)
33 So they answered Jesus, “We don’t know.”
Jesus said, “Neither will I tell you by what authority I am doing these things.”
