15 And straightway in the morning the chief priests held a consultation with the elders and scribes and the whole council, and bound Jesus, and carried him away, and delivered him to Pilate.
2 And Pilate asked him, Art thou the King of the Jews? And he answering said unto them, Thou sayest it.
3 And the chief priests accused him of many things: but he answered nothing.
4 And Pilate asked him again, saying, Answerest thou nothing? behold how many things they witness against thee.
5 But Jesus yet answered nothing; so that Pilate marvelled.
6 Now at that feast he released unto them one prisoner, whomsoever they desired.
7 And there was one named Barabbas, which lay bound with them that had made insurrection with him, who had committed murder in the insurrection.
8 And the multitude crying aloud began to desire him to do as he had ever done unto them.
9 But Pilate answered them, saying, Will ye that I release unto you the King of the Jews?
10 For he knew that the chief priests had delivered him for envy.
11 But the chief priests moved the people, that he should rather release Barabbas unto them.
12 And Pilate answered and said again unto them, What will ye then that I shall do unto him whom ye call the King of the Jews?
13 And they cried out again, Crucify him.
14 Then Pilate said unto them, Why, what evil hath he done? And they cried out the more exceedingly, Crucify him.
15 And so Pilate, willing to content the people, released Barabbas unto them, and delivered Jesus, when he had scourged him, to be crucified.
16 And the soldiers led him away into the hall, called Praetorium; and they call together the whole band.
17 And they clothed him with purple, and platted a crown of thorns, and put it about his head,
18 And began to salute him, Hail, King of the Jews!
19 And they smote him on the head with a reed, and did spit upon him, and bowing their knees worshipped him.
20 And when they had mocked him, they took off the purple from him, and put his own clothes on him, and led him out to crucify him.
21 And they compel one Simon a Cyrenian, who passed by, coming out of the country, the father of Alexander and Rufus, to bear his cross.
22 And they bring him unto the place Golgotha, which is, being interpreted, The place of a skull.
23 And they gave him to drink wine mingled with myrrh: but he received it not.
24 And when they had crucified him, they parted his garments, casting lots upon them, what every man should take.
25 And it was the third hour, and they crucified him.
26 And the superscription of his accusation was written over, The King Of The Jews.
27 And with him they crucify two thieves; the one on his right hand, and the other on his left.
28 And the scripture was fulfilled, which saith, And he was numbered with the transgressors.
29 And they that passed by railed on him, wagging their heads, and saying, Ah, thou that destroyest the temple, and buildest it in three days,
30 Save thyself, and come down from the cross.
31 Likewise also the chief priests mocking said among themselves with the scribes, He saved others; himself he cannot save.
32 Let Christ the King of Israel descend now from the cross, that we may see and believe. And they that were crucified with him reviled him.
33 And when the sixth hour was come, there was darkness over the whole land until the ninth hour.
34 And at the ninth hour Jesus cried with a loud voice, saying, Eloi, Eloi, lama sabachthani? which is, being interpreted, My God, my God, why hast thou forsaken me?
35 And some of them that stood by, when they heard it, said, Behold, he calleth Elias.
36 And one ran and filled a spunge full of vinegar, and put it on a reed, and gave him to drink, saying, Let alone; let us see whether Elias will come to take him down.
37 And Jesus cried with a loud voice, and gave up the ghost.
38 And the veil of the temple was rent in twain from the top to the bottom.
39 And when the centurion, which stood over against him, saw that he so cried out, and gave up the ghost, he said, Truly this man was the Son of God.
40 There were also women looking on afar off: among whom was Mary Magdalene, and Mary the mother of James the less and of Joses, and Salome;
41 (Who also, when he was in Galilee, followed him, and ministered unto him;) and many other women which came up with him unto Jerusalem.
42 And now when the even was come, because it was the preparation, that is, the day before the sabbath,
43 Joseph of Arimathaea, an honourable counsellor, which also waited for the kingdom of God, came, and went in boldly unto Pilate, and craved the body of Jesus.
44 And Pilate marvelled if he were already dead: and calling unto him the centurion, he asked him whether he had been any while dead.
45 And when he knew it of the centurion, he gave the body to Joseph.
46 And he bought fine linen, and took him down, and wrapped him in the linen, and laid him in a sepulchre which was hewn out of a rock, and rolled a stone unto the door of the sepulchre.
47 And Mary Magdalene and Mary the mother of Joses beheld where he was laid.

3 Conducătorii preoţilor Îl acuzau de multe lucruri. 4 Pilat L-a întrebat din nou:
– Nu răspunzi nimic? Uite de câte lucruri Te acuză ei!
5 Dar, spre mirarea lui Pilat, Isus n-a mai răspuns nimic.
6 Pilat le elibera la fiecare sărbătoare un prizonier pe care-l cereau ei. 7 Era unul numit Baraba, închis împreună cu răsculaţii care săvârşiseră o crimă în timpul răscoalei. 8 Mulţimea a venit şi a început să-i ceară lui Pilat să facă ceea ce făcea de obicei. 9 Pilat i-a întrebat:
– Vreţi să vi-L eliberez pe Împăratul iudeilor?
10 Căci el înţelesese că din invidie Îl dăduseră conducătorii preoţilor pe mâna lui.
11 Însă conducătorii preoţilor au stârnit mulţimea să ceară să le elibereze mai bine pe Baraba. 12 Pilat i-a întrebat iarăşi:
– Şi atunci ce (doriţi)[c] să fac cu (Cel pe Care-L numiţi)[d] Împăratul iudeilor?
13 Ei au strigat din nou:
– Răstigneşte-L!
14 Pilat i-a întrebat:
– Dar ce rău a făcut?
Însă ei strigau şi mai tare:
– Răstigneşte-L!
15 Şi astfel, Pilat, vrând să facă pe placul mulţimii, le-a eliberat pe Baraba, iar pe Isus, după ce a pus să-L biciuiască,[e] L-a dat să fie răstignit.
Isus, batjocorit de soldaţi
16 Soldaţii L-au dus în curtea palatului, adică în pretoriu[f], şi au chemat toată cohorta[g]. 17 L-au îmbrăcat cu o mantie purpurie, au împletit o coroană de spini şi I-au aşezat-o pe cap. 18 Şi au început să-L salute zicând: „Salutare, Împărate al iudeilor!“[h] 19 Ei Îl loveau peste cap cu o trestie, Îl scuipau şi se puneau în genunchi, închinându-I-se. 20 După ce şi-au bătut joc de El astfel, L-au dezbrăcat de mantia purpurie, L-au îmbrăcat cu hainele Lui şi L-au dus afară să-L răstignească.
Răstignirea
21 Au obligat un trecător, un om care venea de la câmp, şi anume pe Simon din Cirena, tatăl lui Alexandru şi al lui Rufus, să ducă crucea lui Isus. 22 L-au adus la locul numit Golgota, care tradus înseamnă „Locul Craniului“[i]. 23 I-au dat să bea vin amestecat cu smirnă,[j] dar El nu l-a luat.[k] 24 După ce L-au răstignit, şi-au împărţit hainele Lui între ei, trăgând la sorţi pentru ele,[l] ca să ştie cine ce să ia.
25 Era ceasul al treilea[m] când L-au răstignit. 26 Au pus o inscripţie cu următoarea acuzaţie împotriva Lui: „Împăratul iudeilor“. 27 Au răstignit cu El şi doi tâlhari, unul la dreapta şi unul la stânga Lui. 28 (Astfel a fost împlinită Scriptura, care zice: „A fost numărat alături de cei nelegiuiţi.“)[n] 29 Cei ce treceau pe acolo Îl insultau, dădeau din cap şi ziceau: „Ha! Tu, Cel Care dărâmi Templul şi-l reconstruieşti în trei zile, 30 salvează-Te pe Tine Însuţi şi dă-Te jos de pe cruce!“
31 Tot aşa Îl batjocoreau între ei şi conducătorii preoţilor împreună cu cărturarii, zicând: „Pe alţii i-a salvat, dar pe Sine Însuşi nu Se poate salva! 32 «Cristosul»! «Împăratul lui Israel»! Să se coboare acum de pe cruce, ca să vedem şi să credem!“ Cei care erau răstigniţi împreună cu El Îl batjocoreau şi ei.
Moartea lui Isus
33 Când a venit ceasul al şaselea, s-a făcut întuneric peste toată ţara până la ceasul al nouălea.[o] 34 Şi la ceasul al nouălea Isus a strigat cu glas tare: „Eloi, Eloi, lema sabactani?“, care tradus înseamnă „Dumnezeul Meu, Dumnezeul Meu, de ce M-ai părăsit?“[p]
35 Unii din cei ce stăteau acolo L-au auzit şi au zis: „Iată că-l strigă pe Ilie!“
36 Cineva a alergat şi a umplut un burete cu vin acru[q], l-a pus într-o trestie şi I l-a dat să-l bea, zicând: „Lăsaţi să vedem dacă va veni Ilie să-L dea jos!“
37 Isus a scos un strigăt puternic şi Şi-a dat suflarea.
38 Atunci draperia[r] Templului a fost despicată în două, de sus până jos. 39 Când centurionul[s] care se afla în faţa lui Isus a văzut cum[t] Şi-a dat suflarea, a zis: „Într-adevăr, Omul Acesta era Fiul lui[u] Dumnezeu!“
40 Acolo erau şi nişte femei care priveau de departe. Printre ele erau şi Maria Magdalena, Maria – mama lui Iacov cel tânăr şi a lui Iose[v] – şi Salome, 41 care Îl urmaseră pe Isus şi-I slujiseră atunci când se afla în Galileea. Şi mai erau încă multe altele care veniseră cu El la Ierusalim.
Înmormântarea lui Isus
42 Când s-a făcut deja seară, pentru că era Ziua Pregătirii, adică ziua de dinaintea Sabatului, 43 Iosif din Arimateea, un sfetnic distins din Sinedriu[w], care şi el aştepta Împărăţia lui Dumnezeu, a îndrăznit să se ducă la Pilat şi să-i ceară trupul lui Isus. 44 Pilat s-a mirat că murise deja şi l-a chemat pe centurion ca să-l întrebe dacă a murit de mult timp. 45 El s-a lămurit de la centurion de lucrul aceasta şi apoi i-a dăruit lui Iosif trupul lui Isus. 46 Iosif a cumpărat o pânză de in, apoi I-a dat jos trupul, L-a înfăşurat în pânza de in, L-a pus într-un mormânt săpat în stâncă şi a rostogolit o piatră la intrarea mormântului. 47 Maria Magdalena şi Maria, mama lui Iose, au văzut unde fusese pus.

Jesus Before Pilate(A)
15 Very early in the morning, the chief priests, with the elders, the teachers of the law(B) and the whole Sanhedrin,(C) made their plans. So they bound Jesus, led him away and handed him over to Pilate.(D)
2 “Are you the king of the Jews?”(E) asked Pilate.
“You have said so,” Jesus replied.
3 The chief priests accused him of many things. 4 So again Pilate asked him, “Aren’t you going to answer? See how many things they are accusing you of.”
5 But Jesus still made no reply,(F) and Pilate was amazed.
6 Now it was the custom at the festival to release a prisoner whom the people requested. 7 A man called Barabbas was in prison with the insurrectionists who had committed murder in the uprising. 8 The crowd came up and asked Pilate to do for them what he usually did.
9 “Do you want me to release to you the king of the Jews?”(G) asked Pilate, 10 knowing it was out of self-interest that the chief priests had handed Jesus over to him. 11 But the chief priests stirred up the crowd to have Pilate release Barabbas(H) instead.
12 “What shall I do, then, with the one you call the king of the Jews?” Pilate asked them.
13 “Crucify him!” they shouted.
14 “Why? What crime has he committed?” asked Pilate.
But they shouted all the louder, “Crucify him!”
15 Wanting to satisfy the crowd, Pilate released Barabbas to them. He had Jesus flogged,(I) and handed him over to be crucified.
The Soldiers Mock Jesus(J)
16 The soldiers led Jesus away into the palace(K) (that is, the Praetorium) and called together the whole company of soldiers. 17 They put a purple robe on him, then twisted together a crown of thorns and set it on him. 18 And they began to call out to him, “Hail, king of the Jews!”(L) 19 Again and again they struck him on the head with a staff and spit on him. Falling on their knees, they paid homage to him. 20 And when they had mocked him, they took off the purple robe and put his own clothes on him. Then they led him out(M) to crucify him.
The Crucifixion of Jesus(N)
21 A certain man from Cyrene,(O) Simon, the father of Alexander and Rufus,(P) was passing by on his way in from the country, and they forced him to carry the cross.(Q) 22 They brought Jesus to the place called Golgotha (which means “the place of the skull”). 23 Then they offered him wine mixed with myrrh,(R) but he did not take it. 24 And they crucified him. Dividing up his clothes, they cast lots(S) to see what each would get.
25 It was nine in the morning when they crucified him. 26 The written notice of the charge against him read: the king of the jews.(T)
27 They crucified two rebels with him, one on his right and one on his left. [28] [a] 29 Those who passed by hurled insults at him, shaking their heads(U) and saying, “So! You who are going to destroy the temple and build it in three days,(V) 30 come down from the cross and save yourself!” 31 In the same way the chief priests and the teachers of the law mocked him(W) among themselves. “He saved others,” they said, “but he can’t save himself! 32 Let this Messiah,(X) this king of Israel,(Y) come down now from the cross, that we may see and believe.” Those crucified with him also heaped insults on him.
The Death of Jesus(Z)
33 At noon, darkness came over the whole land until three in the afternoon.(AA) 34 And at three in the afternoon Jesus cried out in a loud voice, “Eloi, Eloi, lema sabachthani?” (which means “My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?”).[b](AB)
35 When some of those standing near heard this, they said, “Listen, he’s calling Elijah.”
36 Someone ran, filled a sponge with wine vinegar,(AC) put it on a staff, and offered it to Jesus to drink. “Now leave him alone. Let’s see if Elijah comes to take him down,” he said.
37 With a loud cry, Jesus breathed his last.(AD)
38 The curtain of the temple was torn in two from top to bottom.(AE) 39 And when the centurion,(AF) who stood there in front of Jesus, saw how he died,[c] he said, “Surely this man was the Son of God!”(AG)
40 Some women were watching from a distance.(AH) Among them were Mary Magdalene, Mary the mother of James the younger and of Joseph,[d] and Salome.(AI) 41 In Galilee these women had followed him and cared for his needs. Many other women who had come up with him to Jerusalem were also there.(AJ)
The Burial of Jesus(AK)
42 It was Preparation Day (that is, the day before the Sabbath).(AL) So as evening approached, 43 Joseph of Arimathea, a prominent member of the Council,(AM) who was himself waiting for the kingdom of God,(AN) went boldly to Pilate and asked for Jesus’ body. 44 Pilate was surprised to hear that he was already dead. Summoning the centurion, he asked him if Jesus had already died. 45 When he learned from the centurion(AO) that it was so, he gave the body to Joseph. 46 So Joseph bought some linen cloth, took down the body, wrapped it in the linen, and placed it in a tomb cut out of rock. Then he rolled a stone against the entrance of the tomb.(AP) 47 Mary Magdalene and Mary the mother of Joseph(AQ) saw where he was laid.
