Discorso escatologico. Introduzione
13 Mentre usciva dal tempio, un discepolo gli disse: «Maestro, guarda che pietre e che costruzioni!». 2 Gesù gli rispose: «Vedi queste grandi costruzioni? Non rimarrà qui pietra su pietra, che non sia distrutta». 3 Mentre era seduto sul monte degli Ulivi, di fronte al tempio, Pietro, Giacomo, Giovanni e Andrea lo interrogavano in disparte: 4 «Dicci, quando accadrà questo, e quale sarà il segno che tutte queste cose staranno per compiersi?».
L'inizio dei dolori
5 Gesù si mise a dire loro: «Guardate che nessuno v'inganni! 6 Molti verranno in mio nome, dicendo: "Sono io", e inganneranno molti. 7 E quando sentirete parlare di guerre, non allarmatevi; bisogna infatti che ciò avvenga, ma non sarà ancora la fine. 8 Si leverà infatti nazione contro nazione e regno contro regno; vi saranno terremoti sulla terra e vi saranno carestie. Questo sarà il principio dei dolori.
9 Ma voi badate a voi stessi! Vi consegneranno ai sinedri, sarete percossi nelle sinagoghe, comparirete davanti a governatori e re a causa mia, per render testimonianza davanti a loro. 10 Ma prima è necessario che il vangelo sia proclamato a tutte le genti. 11 E quando vi condurranno via per consegnarvi, non preoccupatevi di ciò che dovrete dire, ma dite ciò che in quell'ora vi sarà dato: poiché non siete voi a parlare, ma lo Spirito Santo. 12 Il fratello consegnerà a morte il fratello, il padre il figlio e i figli insorgeranno contro i genitori e li metteranno a morte. 13 Voi sarete odiati da tutti a causa del mio nome, ma chi avrà perseverato sino alla fine sarà salvato.
La grande tribolazione di Gerusalemme
14 Quando vedrete l'abominio della desolazione stare là dove non conviene, chi legge capisca, allora quelli che si trovano nella Giudea fuggano ai monti; 15 chi si trova sulla terrazza non scenda per entrare a prender qualcosa nella sua casa; 16 chi è nel campo non torni indietro a prendersi il mantello. 17 Guai alle donne incinte e a quelle che allatteranno in quei giorni! 18 Pregate che ciò non accada d'inverno; 19 perché quei giorni saranno una tribolazione, quale non è mai stata dall'inizio della creazione, fatta da Dio, fino al presente, né mai vi sarà. 20 Se il Signore non abbreviasse quei giorni, nessun uomo si salverebbe. Ma a motivo degli eletti che si è scelto ha abbreviato quei giorni. 21 Allora, dunque, se qualcuno vi dirà: "Ecco, il Cristo è qui, ecco è là", non ci credete; 22 perché sorgeranno falsi cristi e falsi profeti e faranno segni e portenti per ingannare, se fosse possibile, anche gli eletti. 23 Voi però state attenti! Io vi ho predetto tutto.
Manifestazione gloriosa del Figlio dell'uomo
24 In quei giorni, dopo quella tribolazione,
il sole si oscurerà
e la luna non darà più il suo splendore
25 e gli astri si metteranno a cadere dal cielo
e le potenze che sono nei cieli saranno sconvolte.
26 Allora vedranno il Figlio dell'uomo venire sulle nubi con grande potenza e gloria. 27 Ed egli manderà gli angeli e riunirà i suoi eletti dai quattro venti, dall'estremità della terra fino all'estremità del cielo.
Parabola del fico
28 Dal fico imparate questa parabola: quando gia il suo ramo si fa tenero e mette le foglie, voi sapete che l'estate è vicina; 29 così anche voi, quando vedrete accadere queste cose, sappiate che egli è vicino, alle porte. 30 In verità vi dico: non passerà questa generazione prima che tutte queste cose siano avvenute. 31 Il cielo e la terra passeranno, ma le mie parole non passeranno. 32 Quanto poi a quel giorno o a quell'ora, nessuno li conosce, neanche gli angeli nel cielo, e neppure il Figlio, ma solo il Padre.
Vegliare per non essere sorpresi
33 State attenti, vegliate, perché non sapete quando sarà il momento preciso. 34 E' come uno che è partito per un viaggio dopo aver lasciato la propria casa e dato il potere ai servi, a ciascuno il suo compito, e ha ordinato al portiere di vigilare. 35 Vigilate dunque, poiché non sapete quando il padrone di casa ritornerà, se alla sera o a mezzanotte o al canto del gallo o al mattino, 36 perché non giunga all'improvviso, trovandovi addormentati. 37 Quello che dico a voi, lo dico a tutti: Vegliate!».

13 Mentre egli usciva dal tempio, uno dei suoi discepoli gli disse: «Maestro, guarda che pietre e che costruzioni!».
2 E Gesú, rispondendo, gli disse: «Vedi questi grandi edifici? Non sarà lasciata pietra su pietra che non sarà diroccata».
3 E, come egli era seduto sul monte degli Ulivi di fronte al tempio, Pietro, Giacomo, Giovanni e Andrea gli domandarono in disparte:
4 «Dicci, quando avverranno queste cose, e quale sarà il segno del tempo in cui tutte queste cose dovranno compiersi?».
5 E Gesú, rispondendo loro, prese a dire: «Guardate che nessuno vi seduca.
6 Poiché molti verranno nel mio nome, dicendo: "sono io" e ne sedurranno molti.
7 Ora, quando udrete parlare di guerre e di rumori di guerre, non vi turbate perché bisogna che queste cose avvengano; ma non sarà ancora la fine.
8 Infatti si solleverà nazione contro nazione e regno contro regno; vi saranno terremoti in vari luoghi, carestie ed agitazioni. Queste cose non saranno altro che l'inizio delle doglie di parto.
9 Badate a voi stessi! Poiché vi consegneranno ai tribunali e sarete battuti nelle sinagoghe; sarete portati davanti ai governatori e ai re, per causa mia, in testimonianza a loro.
10 Ma prima bisogna che l'evangelo sia predicato fra tutte le genti.
11 Ora, quando vi condurranno via per consegnarvi nelle loro mani, non preoccupatevi in anticipo di ciò che dovrete dire, e non lo premeditate; ma dite ciò che vi sarà dato in quell'istante, perché non siete voi a parlare, ma lo Spirito Santo.
12 Ora, il fratello consegnerà a morte il fratello e il padre il figlio; e i figli insorgeranno contro i genitori e li faranno morire.
13 E voi sarete odiati da tutti a causa del mio nome; ma chi avrà perseverato fino alla fine sarà salvato».
14 «Or quando vedrete l'abominazione della desolazione, predetta dal profeta Daniele, posta dove non dovrebbe essere (chi legge intenda), allora coloro che saranno nella Giudea fuggano ai monti.
15 E chi sarà sul tetto di casa non scenda, né entri in casa a prendere qualcosa da casa sua.
16 E chi sarà nei campi non torni indietro a prendersi il vestito.
17 Or guai alle donne incinte e a quelle che allatteranno in quei giorni!
18 E pregate che la vostra fuga non avvenga d'inverno.
19 Perché in quei giorni vi sarà una grande tribolazione, la piú grande che sia mai venuta dall'inizio della creazione fatta da Dio fino ad oggi, né mai piú vi sarà.
20 E se il Signore non avesse abbreviato quei giorni, nessuna carne si salverebbe; ma a motivo degli eletti, che egli ha scelto, il Signore ha abbreviato quei giorni.
21 Allora, se qualcuno vi dirà: "ecco qui il Cristo" ovvero: "eccolo là", non gli credete.
22 Sorgeranno infatti falsi cristi e falsi profeti e faranno segni e prodigi da sedurre, se fosse possibile, anche gli eletti.
23 Voi però state attenti; ecco, io vi ho predetto ogni cosa».
24 «Ma in quei giorni, dopo quella tribolazione, il sole si oscurerà e la luna non darà il suo splendore;
25 le stelle del cielo cadranno e le potenze che sono nei cieli saranno scrollate.
26 Allora vedranno il Figlio dell'uomo venire nelle nuvole, con grande potenza e gloria.
27 Egli allora manderà i suoi angeli e raccoglierà i suoi eletti dai quattro venti, dall'estremità della terra fino all'estremità del cielo.
28 Or dal fico imparate questa similitudine: quando i suoi rami diventano teneri e spuntano le prime foglie, voi sapete che l'estate è vicina.
29 Cosí anche voi, quando vedrete accadere queste cose, sappiate che egli è vicino, proprio alle porte.
30 In verità vi dico che questa generazione non passerà, prima che tutte queste cose siano avvenute.
31 Il cielo e la terra passeranno, ma le mie parole non passeranno».
32 «Ma quanto a quel giorno e a quell'ora, nessuno li conosce, né gli angeli nel cielo, né il Figlio, ma solo il Padre.
33 State attenti, vegliate e pregate, perché non sapete quando sarà quel momento.
34 E come se un uomo, andando in viaggio, lasciasse la propria casa, dandone l'autorità ai suoi servi, a ciascuno il suo compito, e al portinaio ordinasse di vegliare.
35 Vegliate dunque, perché non sapete quando il padrone di casa verrà; se di sera, a mezzanotte, al cantar del gallo o al mattino;
36 perché, venendo all'improvviso, non vi trovi addormentati.
37 Ora, ciò che dico a voi, lo dico a tutti: Vegliate!».

The temple’s fate
13 As Jesus left the temple, one of his disciples said to him, “Teacher, look! What awesome stones and buildings!”
2 Jesus responded, “Do you see these enormous buildings? Not even one stone will be left upon another. All will be demolished.”
3 Jesus was sitting on the Mount of Olives across from the temple. Peter, James, John, and Andrew asked him privately, 4 “Tell us, when will these things happen? What sign will show that all these things are about to come to an end?”
Keep watch!
5 Jesus said, “Watch out that no one deceives you. 6 Many people will come in my name, saying, ‘I’m the one!’ They will deceive many people. 7 When you hear of wars and reports of wars, don’t be alarmed. These things must happen, but this isn’t the end yet. 8 Nations and kingdoms will fight against each other, and there will be earthquakes and famines in all sorts of places. These things are just the beginning of the sufferings associated with the end.
9 “Watch out for yourselves. People will hand you over to the councils. You will be beaten in the synagogues. You will stand before governors and kings because of me so that you can testify before them. 10 First, the good news must be proclaimed to all the nations. 11 When they haul you in and hand you over, don’t worry ahead of time about what to answer or say. Instead, say whatever is given to you at that moment, for you aren’t doing the speaking but the Holy Spirit is. 12 Brothers and sisters will hand each other over to death. A father will turn in his children. Children will rise up against their parents and have them executed. 13 Everyone will hate you because of my name. But whoever stands firm until the end will be saved.
14 “When you see the disgusting and destructive thing standing where it shouldn’t be (the reader should understand this), then those in Judea must escape to the mountains. 15 Those on the roof shouldn’t come down or enter their houses to grab anything. 16 Those in the field shouldn’t come back to grab their clothes. 17 How terrible it will be at that time for women who are pregnant and for women who are nursing their children. 18 Pray that it doesn’t happen in winter. 19 In those days there will be great suffering such as the world has never before seen and will never again see. 20 If the Lord hadn’t shortened that time, no one would be rescued. But for the sake of the chosen ones, the ones whom God chose, he has cut short the time.
21 “Then if someone says to you, ‘Look, here’s the Christ,’ or ‘There he is,’ don’t believe it. 22 False christs and false prophets will appear, and they will offer signs and wonders in order to deceive, if possible, those whom God has chosen. 23 But you, watch out! I’ve told you everything ahead of time.
24 “In those days, after the suffering of that time, the sun will become dark, and the moon won’t give its light. 25 The stars will fall from the sky, and the planets and other heavenly bodies will be shaken. 26 Then they will see the Human One[a] coming in the clouds with great power and splendor. 27 Then he will send the angels and gather together his chosen people from the four corners of the earth, from the end of the earth to the end of heaven.
A lesson from the fig tree
28 “Learn this parable from the fig tree. After its branch becomes tender and it sprouts new leaves, you know that summer is near. 29 In the same way, when you see these things happening, you know that he’s near, at the door. 30 I assure you that this generation won’t pass away until all these things happen. 31 Heaven and earth will pass away, but my words will certainly not pass away.
32 “But nobody knows when that day or hour will come, not the angels in heaven and not the Son. Only the Father knows. 33 Watch out! Stay alert! You don’t know when the time is coming. 34 It is as if someone took a trip, left the household behind, and put the servants in charge, giving each one a job to do, and told the doorkeeper to stay alert. 35 Therefore, stay alert! You don’t know when the head of the household will come,whether in the evening or at midnight, or when the rooster crows in the early morning or at daybreak. 36 Don’t let him show up when you weren’t expecting and find you sleeping. 37 What I say to you, I say to all: Stay alert!”

13 As he went out of the temple, one of his disciples said to him, “Teacher, see what kind of stones and what kind of buildings!”
2 Jesus said to him, “Do you see these great buildings? There will not be left here one stone on another, which will not be thrown down.”
3 As he sat on the Mount of Olives opposite the temple, Peter, James, John, and Andrew asked him privately, 4 “Tell us, when will these things be? What is the sign that these things are all about to be fulfilled?”
5 Jesus, answering, began to tell them, “Be careful that no one leads you astray. 6 For many will come in my name, saying, ‘I am he!’[a] and will lead many astray.
7 “When you hear of wars and rumors of wars, don’t be troubled. For those must happen, but the end is not yet. 8 For nation will rise against nation, and kingdom against kingdom. There will be earthquakes in various places. There will be famines and troubles. These things are the beginning of birth pains.
9 “But watch yourselves, for they will deliver you up to councils. You will be beaten in synagogues. You will stand before rulers and kings for my sake, for a testimony to them. 10 The Good News must first be preached to all the nations. 11 When they lead you away and deliver you up, don’t be anxious beforehand or premeditate what you will say, but say whatever will be given you in that hour. For it is not you who speak, but the Holy Spirit.
12 “Brother will deliver up brother to death, and the father his child. Children will rise up against parents and cause them to be put to death. 13 You will be hated by all men for my name’s sake, but he who endures to the end will be saved.
14 “But when you see the abomination of desolation,(A) spoken of by Daniel the prophet, standing where it ought not” (let the reader understand), “then let those who are in Judea flee to the mountains, 15 and let him who is on the housetop not go down, nor enter in, to take anything out of his house. 16 Let him who is in the field not return back to take his cloak. 17 But woe to those who are with child and to those who nurse babies in those days! 18 Pray that your flight won’t be in the winter. 19 For in those days there will be oppression, such as there has not been the like from the beginning of the creation which God created until now, and never will be. 20 Unless the Lord had shortened the days, no flesh would have been saved; but for the sake of the chosen ones, whom he picked out, he shortened the days. 21 Then if anyone tells you, ‘Look, here is the Christ!’ or, ‘Look, there!’ don’t believe it. 22 For false christs and false prophets will arise and will show signs and wonders, that they may lead astray, if possible, even the chosen ones. 23 But you watch.
“Behold, I have told you all things beforehand. 24 But in those days, after that oppression, the sun will be darkened, the moon will not give its light, 25 the stars will be falling from the sky, and the powers that are in the heavens will be shaken.(B) 26 Then they will see the Son of Man coming in clouds with great power and glory. 27 Then he will send out his angels, and will gather together his chosen ones from the four winds, from the ends of the earth to the ends of the sky.
28 “Now from the fig tree, learn this parable. When the branch has now become tender and produces its leaves, you know that the summer is near; 29 even so you also, when you see these things coming to pass, know that it is near, at the doors. 30 Most certainly I say to you, this generation[b] will not pass away until all these things happen. 31 Heaven and earth will pass away, but my words will not pass away.
32 “But of that day or that hour no one knows—not even the angels in heaven, nor the Son, but only the Father. 33 Watch, keep alert, and pray; for you don’t know when the time is.
34 “It is like a man traveling to another country, having left his house and given authority to his servants, and to each one his work, and also commanded the doorkeeper to keep watch. 35 Watch therefore, for you don’t know when the lord of the house is coming—whether at evening, or at midnight, or when the rooster crows, or in the morning; 36 lest, coming suddenly, he might find you sleeping. 37 What I tell you, I tell all: Watch!”
