IV. IL MINISTERO DI GESU' A GERUSALEMME
Ingresso messianico in Gerusalemme
11 Quando si avvicinarono a Gerusalemme, verso Bètfage e Betània, presso il monte degli Ulivi, mandò due dei suoi discepoli 2 e disse loro: «Andate nel villaggio che vi sta di fronte, e subito entrando in esso troverete un asinello legato, sul quale nessuno è mai salito. Scioglietelo e conducetelo. 3 E se qualcuno vi dirà: Perché fate questo?, rispondete: Il Signore ne ha bisogno, ma lo rimanderà qui subito». 4 Andarono e trovarono un asinello legato vicino a una porta, fuori sulla strada, e lo sciolsero. 5 E alcuni dei presenti però dissero loro: «Che cosa fate, sciogliendo questo asinello?». 6 Ed essi risposero come aveva detto loro il Signore. E li lasciarono fare. 7 Essi condussero l'asinello da Gesù, e vi gettarono sopra i loro mantelli, ed egli vi montò sopra. 8 E molti stendevano i propri mantelli sulla strada e altri delle fronde, che avevano tagliate dai campi. 9 Quelli poi che andavano innanzi, e quelli che venivano dietro gridavano:
Osanna!
Benedetto colui che viene nel nome del Signore!
10 Benedetto il regno che viene, del nostro padre Davide!
Osanna nel più alto dei cieli!
11 Ed entrò a Gerusalemme, nel tempio. E dopo aver guardato ogni cosa attorno, essendo ormai l'ora tarda, uscì con i Dodici diretto a Betània.
Il fico sterile
12 La mattina seguente, mentre uscivano da Betània, ebbe fame. 13 E avendo visto di lontano un fico che aveva delle foglie, si avvicinò per vedere se mai vi trovasse qualche cosa; ma giuntovi sotto, non trovò altro che foglie. Non era infatti quella la stagione dei fichi. 14 E gli disse: «Nessuno possa mai più mangiare i tuoi frutti». E i discepoli l'udirono.
I venditori cacciati dal tempio
15 Andarono intanto a Gerusalemme. Ed entrato nel tempio, si mise a scacciare quelli che vendevano e comperavano nel tempio; rovesciò i tavoli dei cambiavalute e le sedie dei venditori di colombe 16 e non permetteva che si portassero cose attraverso il tempio. 17 Ed insegnava loro dicendo: «Non sta forse scritto:
La mia casa sarà chiamata
casa di preghiera per tutte le genti?
Voi invece ne avete fatto una spelonca di ladri!».
18 L'udirono i sommi sacerdoti e gli scribi e cercavano il modo di farlo morire. Avevano infatti paura di lui, perché tutto il popolo era ammirato del suo insegnamento. 19 Quando venne la sera uscirono dalla città.
Il fico seccato. Fede e preghiera
20 La mattina seguente, passando, videro il fico seccato fin dalle radici. 21 Allora Pietro, ricordatosi, gli disse: «Maestro, guarda: il fico che hai maledetto si è seccato». 22 Gesù allora disse loro: «Abbiate fede in Dio! 23 In verità vi dico: chi dicesse a questo monte: Lèvati e gettati nel mare, senza dubitare in cuor suo ma credendo che quanto dice avverrà, ciò gli sarà accordato. 24 Per questo vi dico: tutto quello che domandate nella preghiera, abbiate fede di averlo ottenuto e vi sarà accordato. 25 Quando vi mettete a pregare, se avete qualcosa contro qualcuno, perdonate, perché anche il Padre vostro che è nei cieli perdoni a voi i vostri peccati». 26 .
Obiezione dei Giudei sull'autorità di Gesù
27 Andarono di nuovo a Gerusalemme. E mentre egli si aggirava per il tempio, gli si avvicinarono i sommi sacerdoti, gli scribi e gli anziani e gli dissero: 28 «Con quale autorità fai queste cose? O chi ti ha dato l'autorità di farlo?». 29 Ma Gesù disse loro: «Vi farò anch'io una domanda e, se mi risponderete, vi dirò con quale potere lo faccio. 30 Il battesimo di Giovanni veniva dal cielo o dagli uomini? Rispondetemi». 31 Ed essi discutevano tra sé dicendo: «Se rispondiamo "dal cielo", dirà: Perché allora non gli avete creduto? 32 Diciamo dunque "dagli uomini"?». Però temevano la folla, perché tutti consideravano Giovanni come un vero profeta. 33 Allora diedero a Gesù questa risposta: «Non sappiamo». E Gesù disse loro: «Neanch'io vi dico con quale autorità faccio queste cose».

La Nuova Diodati
11 Ora quando furono giunti vicino a Gerusalemme, verso Betfage e Betania, presso il monte degli Ulivi, Gesú mandò due dei suoi discepoli,
2 dicendo loro: «Andate nel villaggio che vi sta di fronte e, appena entrati in esso, troverete un puledro d'asino legato, sul quale nessuno è ancora salito; scioglietelo e conducetelo da me.
3 E se qualcuno vi dice: "Perché fate questo?". Rispondete: "Il Signore ne ha bisogno. Lo rimanderà qui subito"».
4 Essi dunque andarono e trovarono il puledro legato vicino ad una porta, fuori sulla strada, e lo sciolsero.
5 Alcuni dei presenti dissero loro: «Cosa fate? Perché sciogliete il puledro?».
6 Ed essi risposero loro come Gesú aveva loro indicato, e quelli li lasciarono andare.
7 Allora essi condussero il puledro a Gesú, vi posero sopra i loro mantelli, ed egli vi si sedette sopra.
8 E molti stendevano i loro vestiti sulla strada, e altri tagliavano rami dagli alberi e li spargevano sulla strada.
9 E tanto quelli che precedevano come quelli che seguivano, gridando, dicevano: «Osanna! Benedetto colui che viene nel nome del Signore!
10 Benedetto il regno di Davide nostro padre, che viene nel nome del Signore. Osanna nei luoghi altissimi!».
11 Cosí Gesú entrò in Gerusalemme e nel tempio; e, dopo aver osservato bene ogni cosa, essendo ormai tardi, uscí con i dodici diretto a Betania.
12 Il giorno seguente, usciti da Betania, egli ebbe fame.
13 E, vedendo da lontano un fico che aveva delle foglie, andò a vedere se vi trovasse qualcosa; ma, avvicinatosi ad esso, non vi trovò altro che foglie, perché non era il tempo dei fichi.
14 Allora Gesú, rivolgendosi al fico, disse: «Nessuno mangi mai piú frutto da te in eterno». E i suoi discepoli l'udirono.
15 Cosí giunsero a Gerusalemme. E Gesú, entrato nel tempio, cominciò a scacciare quelli che nel tempio vendevano e compravano e rovesciò le tavole dei cambiamonete e le sedie dei venditori di colombi.
16 E non permetteva ad alcuno di portare oggetti attraverso il tempio.
17 E insegnava, dicendo loro: «Non è scritto: "La mia casa sarà chiamata casa di preghiera per tutte le genti?" Voi, invece, ne avete fatto un covo di ladroni!».
18 Ora gli scribi e i capi dei sacerdoti, avendo udito queste cose, cercavano il modo di farlo morire. Avevano infatti paura di lui, perché tutta la folla era rapita in ammirazione del suo insegnamento.
19 E, quando fu sera, Gesú uscí fuori dalla città.
20 Il mattino seguente, ripassando vicino al fico, lo videro seccato fin dalle radici.
21 E Pietro, ricordandosi, gli disse: «Maestro, ecco, il fico che tu maledicesti è seccato».
22 Allora Gesú, rispondendo, disse loro: «Abbiate la fede di Dio!
23 Perche in verità vi dico che se alcuno dirà a questo monte: "Spostati e gettati nel mare" e non dubiterà in cuor suo ma crederà che quanto dice avverrà qualunque cosa dirà, gli sarà concesso.
24 Perciò vi dico: Tutte le cose che domandate pregando, credete di riceverle e le otterrete.
25 E quando vi mettete a pregare, se avete qualcosa contro qualcuno, perdonate affinché anche il Padre vostro, che è nei cieli, perdoni i vostri peccati.
26 Ma se voi non perdonate, neanche il Padre vostro, che è nei cieli, perdonerà i vostri peccati».
27 Poi vennero di nuovo a Gerusalemme; e mentre egli passeggiava per il tempio, i capi dei sacerdoti, gli scribi e gli anziani, si accostarono a lui,
28 e gli dissero: «Con quale autorità fai queste cose? E chi ti ha dato codesta autorità per fare queste cose?».
29 E Gesú, rispondendo, disse loro: «Anch'io vi domanderò una cosa, rispondetemi dunque, ed io vi dirò con quale autorità faccio queste cose.
30 Il battesimo di Giovanni veniva dal cielo o dagli uomini? Rispondetemi».
31 Ed essi ragionavano tra di loro, dicendo: «Se diciamo dal cielo, egli dirà: "Perché dunque non gli credeste?"
32 Ma se diciamo dagli uomini, noi abbiamo paura del popolo, poiché tutti ritenevano che Giovanni fosse veramente un profeta».
33 Perciò, rispondendo, dissero a Gesú: «Non lo sappiamo». E Gesú, rispondendo, disse loro: «Neppure io vi dico con quale autorità faccio queste cose».

The King Enters Jerusalem(A)
11 When they came near Jerusalem, at Bethphage and Bethany, near the Mount of Olives, Jesus[a] sent two of his disciples on ahead 2 and told them, “Go into the village ahead of you. As soon as you go into it, you will find a colt tied up that no one has ever ridden. Untie it, and bring it along. 3 If anyone asks you, ‘Why are you doing this?,’ say, ‘The Lord needs it,’ and he will send it back here at once.”
4 So they went and found the colt outside in the street tied up next to a doorway. While they were untying it, 5 some men standing there asked them, “What are you doing untying that colt?” 6 The disciples[b] told them what Jesus had said, and the men[c] let them go.
7 They brought the colt to Jesus, threw their coats on it, and he sat on it. 8 Many people spread their coats on the road, while others spread leafy branches that they had cut in the fields. 9 Those who went ahead and those who followed him were shouting,
“Hosanna![d]
How blessed is the one who comes
in the name of the Lord![e]
10 How blessed is the coming kingdom[f]
of our ancestor David!
Hosanna in the highest heaven!”[g]
11 Then Jesus went into Jerusalem and into the Temple and looked around at everything. Since it was already late, he went out with the Twelve to Bethany.
Jesus Curses a Fig Tree(B)
12 The next day, as they were leaving Bethany, Jesus[h] became hungry. 13 Seeing in the distance a fig tree covered with leaves, he went to see if he could find anything on it. When he came to it, he found nothing except leaves because it wasn’t the season for figs. 14 So he told it, “May no one ever eat fruit from you again!” Now his disciples were listening to this.
Confrontation in the Temple over Money(C)
15 When they came to Jerusalem, he went into the Temple and began to throw out those who were selling and those who were buying in the Temple. He overturned the moneychangers’ tables and the chairs of those who sold doves. 16 He wouldn’t even let anyone carry a vessel through the Temple. 17 Then he began to teach them: “It is written, is it not, ‘My house is to be called a house of prayer for all nations’?[i] But you’ve turned it into a hideout[j] for bandits!” 18 When the high priests and elders heard this, they began to look for a way to kill him, because they were afraid of him, since the whole crowd was amazed at his teaching. 19 When evening came, Jesus and his disciples[k] would leave the city.
The Lesson from the Dried Fig Tree(D)
20 While they were walking along early the next morning, they saw the fig tree dried up to its roots. 21 Remembering what Jesus had said,[l] Peter pointed out to him, “Rabbi,[m] look! The fig tree you cursed has dried up!”
22 Jesus told his disciples,[n] “Have faith in God! 23 I tell all of you[o] with certainty, if anyone says to this mountain, ‘Be lifted up and thrown into the sea,’ if he doesn’t doubt in his heart but believes that what he says will happen, it will be done for him. 24 That is why I tell you, whatever you ask for in prayer, believe that you have received[p] it and it will be yours.
25 “Whenever you stand up to pray, forgive whatever you have against anyone, so that your Father in heaven will forgive your sins. 26 But if you do not forgive, your Father in heaven will not forgive your sins.”[q]
Jesus’ Authority is Challenged(E)
27 Then they went into Jerusalem again. While Jesus[r] was walking in the Temple, the high priests, the scribes, and the elders came to him 28 and asked him, “By what authority are you doing these things, and who gave you this authority to do them?”
29 Jesus told them, “I’ll ask you one question.[s] Answer me, and then I’ll tell you by what authority I’m doing these things. 30 Was John’s authority to baptize[t] from heaven or from humans? Answer me.”
31 They began discussing this among themselves. “If we say, ‘From heaven,’ he’ll say, ‘Then why didn’t you believe him?’ 32 But if we say, ‘From humans’…?” They were afraid of the crowd, because everyone really thought John was a prophet.
33 So they answered Jesus, “We don’t know.”
Then Jesus told them, “Then I won’t tell you by what authority I’m doing these things.”

11 And when they came nigh to Jerusalem, unto Bethphage and Bethany, at the mount of Olives, he sendeth forth two of his disciples,
2 And saith unto them, Go your way into the village over against you: and as soon as ye be entered into it, ye shall find a colt tied, whereon never man sat; loose him, and bring him.
3 And if any man say unto you, Why do ye this? say ye that the Lord hath need of him; and straightway he will send him hither.
4 And they went their way, and found the colt tied by the door without in a place where two ways met; and they loose him.
5 And certain of them that stood there said unto them, What do ye, loosing the colt?
6 And they said unto them even as Jesus had commanded: and they let them go.
7 And they brought the colt to Jesus, and cast their garments on him; and he sat upon him.

18 And the scribes and chief priests heard it, and sought how they might destroy him: for they feared him, because all the people was astonished at his doctrine.
19 And when even was come, he went out of the city.
20 And in the morning, as they passed by, they saw the fig tree dried up from the roots.
21 And Peter calling to remembrance saith unto him, Master, behold, the fig tree which thou cursedst is withered away.
22 And Jesus answering saith unto them, Have faith in God.
23 For verily I say unto you, That whosoever shall say unto this mountain, Be thou removed, and be thou cast into the sea; and shall not doubt in his heart, but shall believe that those things which he saith shall come to pass; he shall have whatsoever he saith.
24 Therefore I say unto you, What things soever ye desire, when ye pray, believe that ye receive them, and ye shall have them.
25 And when ye stand praying, forgive, if ye have ought against any: that your Father also which is in heaven may forgive you your trespasses.
26 But if ye do not forgive, neither will your Father which is in heaven forgive your trespasses.
27 And they come again to Jerusalem: and as he was walking in the temple, there come to him the chief priests, and the scribes, and the elders,
28 And say unto him, By what authority doest thou these things? and who gave thee this authority to do these things?
29 And Jesus answered and said unto them, I will also ask of you one question, and answer me, and I will tell you by what authority I do these things.
30 The baptism of John, was it from heaven, or of men? answer me.
31 And they reasoned with themselves, saying, If we shall say, From heaven; he will say, Why then did ye not believe him?
32 But if we shall say, Of men; they feared the people: for all men counted John, that he was a prophet indeed.
33 And they answered and said unto Jesus, We cannot tell. And Jesus answering saith unto them, Neither do I tell you by what authority I do these things.
