2 Quelques jours après, Jésus revint à Capernaüm. On apprit qu'il était à la maison,
2 et il s'assembla un si grand nombre de personnes que l'espace devant la porte ne pouvait plus les contenir. Il leur annonçait la parole.
3 Des gens vinrent à lui, amenant un paralytique porté par quatre hommes.
4 Comme ils ne pouvaient l'aborder, à cause de la foule, ils découvrirent le toit de la maison où il était, et ils descendirent par cette ouverture le lit sur lequel le paralytique était couché.
5 Jésus, voyant leur foi, dit au paralytique: Mon enfant, tes péchés sont pardonnés.
6 Il y avait là quelques scribes, qui étaient assis, et qui se disaient au dedans d'eux:
7 Comment cet homme parle-t-il ainsi? Il blasphème. Qui peut pardonner les péchés, si ce n'est Dieu seul?
8 Jésus, ayant aussitôt connu par son esprit ce qu'ils pensaient au dedans d'eux, leur dit: Pourquoi avez-vous de telles pensées dans vos coeurs?
9 Lequel est le plus aisé, de dire au paralytique: Tes péchés sont pardonnés, ou de dire: Lève-toi, prends ton lit, et marche?
10 Or, afin que vous sachiez que le Fils de l'homme a sur la terre le pouvoir de pardonner les péchés:
11 Je te l'ordonne, dit-il au paralytique, lève-toi, prends ton lit, et va dans ta maison.
12 Et, à l'instant, il se leva, prit son lit, et sortit en présence de tout le monde, de sorte qu'ils étaient tous dans l'étonnement et glorifiaient Dieu, disant: Nous n'avons jamais rien vu de pareil.
13 Jésus sortit de nouveau du côté de la mer. Toute la foule venait à lui, et il les enseignait.
14 En passant, il vit Lévi, fils d'Alphée, assis au bureau des péages. Il lui dit: Suis-moi. Lévi se leva, et le suivit.
15 Comme Jésus était à table dans la maison de Lévi, beaucoup de publicains et de gens de mauvaise vie se mirent aussi à table avec lui et avec ses disciples; car ils étaient nombreux, et l'avaient suivi.
16 Les scribes et les pharisiens, le voyant manger avec les publicains et les gens de mauvaise vie, dirent à ses disciples: Pourquoi mange-t-il et boit-il avec les publicains et les gens de mauvaise vie?
17 Ce que Jésus ayant entendu, il leur dit: Ce ne sont pas ceux qui se portent bien qui ont besoin de médecin, mais les malades. Je ne suis pas venu appeler des justes, mais des pécheurs.
18 Les disciples de Jean et les pharisiens jeûnaient. Ils vinrent dire à Jésus: Pourquoi les disciples de Jean et ceux des pharisiens jeûnent-ils, tandis que tes disciples ne jeûnent point?
19 Jésus leur répondit: Les amis de l'époux peuvent-ils jeûner pendant que l'époux est avec eux? Aussi longtemps qu'ils ont avec eux l'époux, ils ne peuvent jeûner.
20 Les jours viendront où l'époux leur sera enlevé, et alors ils jeûneront en ce jour-là.
21 Personne ne coud une pièce de drap neuf à un vieil habit; autrement, la pièce de drap neuf emporterait une partie du vieux, et la déchirure serait pire.
22 Et personne ne met du vin nouveau dans de vieilles outres; autrement, le vin fait rompre les outres, et le vin et les outres sont perdus; mais il faut mettre le vin nouveau dans des outres neuves.
23 Il arriva, un jour de sabbat, que Jésus traversa des champs de blé. Ses disciples, chemin faisant, se mirent à arracher des épis.
24 Les pharisiens lui dirent: Voici, pourquoi font-ils ce qui n'est pas permis pendant le sabbat?
25 Jésus leur répondit: N'avez-vous jamais lu ce que fit David, lorsqu'il fut dans la nécessité et qu'il eut faim, lui et ceux qui étaient avec lui;
26 comment il entra dans la maison de Dieu, du temps du souverain sacrificateur Abiathar, et mangea les pains de proposition, qu'il n'est permis qu'aux sacrificateurs de manger, et en donna même à ceux qui étaient avec lui!
27 Puis il leur dit: Le sabbat a été fait pour l'homme, et non l'homme pour le sabbat,
28 de sorte que le Fils de l'homme est maître même du sabbat.

2 Several days later he returned to Capernaum, and the news of his arrival spread quickly through the city. 2 Soon the house where he was staying was so packed with visitors that there wasn’t room for a single person more, not even outside the door. And he preached the Word to them. 3 Four men arrived carrying a paralyzed man on a stretcher. 4 They couldn’t get to Jesus through the crowd, so they dug through the clay roof above his head and lowered the sick man on his stretcher, right down in front of Jesus.[a]
5 When Jesus saw how strongly they believed that he would help, Jesus said to the sick man, “Son, your sins are forgiven!”
6 But some of the Jewish religious leaders[b] said to themselves as they sat there, 7 “What? This is blasphemy! Does he think he is God? For only God can forgive sins.”
8 Jesus could read their minds and said to them at once, “Why does this bother you? 9-11 I, the Messiah,[c] have the authority on earth to forgive sins. But talk is cheap—anybody could say that. So I’ll prove it to you by healing this man.” Then, turning to the paralyzed man, he commanded, “Pick up your stretcher and go on home, for you are healed!”
12 The man jumped up, took the stretcher, and pushed his way through the stunned onlookers! Then how they praised God. “We’ve never seen anything like this before!” they all exclaimed.
13 Then Jesus went out to the seashore again and preached to the crowds that gathered around him. 14 As he was walking up the beach he saw Levi, the son of Alphaeus, sitting at his tax collection booth. “Come with me,” Jesus told him. “Come be my disciple.”
And Levi jumped to his feet and went along.
15 That night Levi invited his fellow tax collectors and many other notorious sinners to be his dinner guests so that they could meet Jesus and his disciples. (There were many men of this type among the crowds that followed him.) 16 But when some of the Jewish religious leaders[d] saw him eating with these men of ill repute, they said to his disciples, “How can he stand it, to eat with such scum?”
17 When Jesus heard what they were saying, he told them, “Sick people need the doctor, not healthy ones! I haven’t come to tell good people to repent, but the bad ones.”
18 John’s disciples and the Jewish leaders sometimes fasted, that is, went without food as part of their religion. One day some people came to Jesus and asked why his disciples didn’t do this too.
19 Jesus replied, “Do friends of the bridegroom refuse to eat at the wedding feast? Should they be sad while he is with them? 20 But some day he will be taken away from them, and then they will mourn. 21 Besides, going without food is part of the old way of doing things.[e] It is like patching an old garment with unshrunk cloth! What happens? The patch pulls away and leaves the hole worse than before. 22 You know better than to put new wine into old wineskins. They would burst. The wine would be spilled out and the wineskins ruined. New wine needs fresh wineskins.”
23 Another time, on a Sabbath day as Jesus and his disciples were walking through the fields, the disciples were breaking off heads of wheat and eating the grain.[f]
24 Some of the Jewish religious leaders said to Jesus, “They shouldn’t be doing that! It’s against our laws to work by harvesting grain on the Sabbath.”
25-26 But Jesus replied, “Didn’t you ever hear about the time King David and his companions were hungry, and he went into the house of God—Abiathar was high priest then—and they ate the special bread[g] only priests were allowed to eat? That was against the law too. 27 But the Sabbath was made to benefit man, and not man to benefit the Sabbath. 28 And I, the Messiah,[h] have authority even to decide what men can do on Sabbath days!”

Jesus Forgives and Heals a Paralyzed Man(A)
2 A few days later, when Jesus again entered Capernaum, the people heard that he had come home. 2 They gathered in such large numbers(B) that there was no room left, not even outside the door, and he preached the word to them. 3 Some men came, bringing to him a paralyzed man,(C) carried by four of them. 4 Since they could not get him to Jesus because of the crowd, they made an opening in the roof above Jesus by digging through it and then lowered the mat the man was lying on. 5 When Jesus saw their faith, he said to the paralyzed man, “Son, your sins are forgiven.”(D)
6 Now some teachers of the law were sitting there, thinking to themselves, 7 “Why does this fellow talk like that? He’s blaspheming! Who can forgive sins but God alone?”(E)
8 Immediately Jesus knew in his spirit that this was what they were thinking in their hearts, and he said to them, “Why are you thinking these things? 9 Which is easier: to say to this paralyzed man, ‘Your sins are forgiven,’ or to say, ‘Get up, take your mat and walk’? 10 But I want you to know that the Son of Man(F) has authority on earth to forgive sins.” So he said to the man, 11 “I tell you, get up, take your mat and go home.” 12 He got up, took his mat and walked out in full view of them all. This amazed everyone and they praised God,(G) saying, “We have never seen anything like this!”(H)
Jesus Calls Levi and Eats With Sinners(I)
13 Once again Jesus went out beside the lake. A large crowd came to him,(J) and he began to teach them. 14 As he walked along, he saw Levi son of Alphaeus sitting at the tax collector’s booth. “Follow me,”(K) Jesus told him, and Levi got up and followed him.
15 While Jesus was having dinner at Levi’s house, many tax collectors and sinners were eating with him and his disciples, for there were many who followed him. 16 When the teachers of the law who were Pharisees(L) saw him eating with the sinners and tax collectors, they asked his disciples: “Why does he eat with tax collectors and sinners?”(M)
17 On hearing this, Jesus said to them, “It is not the healthy who need a doctor, but the sick. I have not come to call the righteous, but sinners.”(N)
Jesus Questioned About Fasting(O)
18 Now John’s disciples and the Pharisees were fasting.(P) Some people came and asked Jesus, “How is it that John’s disciples and the disciples of the Pharisees are fasting, but yours are not?”
19 Jesus answered, “How can the guests of the bridegroom fast while he is with them? They cannot, so long as they have him with them. 20 But the time will come when the bridegroom will be taken from them,(Q) and on that day they will fast.
21 “No one sews a patch of unshrunk cloth on an old garment. Otherwise, the new piece will pull away from the old, making the tear worse. 22 And no one pours new wine into old wineskins. Otherwise, the wine will burst the skins, and both the wine and the wineskins will be ruined. No, they pour new wine into new wineskins.”
Jesus Is Lord of the Sabbath(R)(S)
23 One Sabbath Jesus was going through the grainfields, and as his disciples walked along, they began to pick some heads of grain.(T) 24 The Pharisees said to him, “Look, why are they doing what is unlawful on the Sabbath?”(U)
25 He answered, “Have you never read what David did when he and his companions were hungry and in need? 26 In the days of Abiathar the high priest,(V) he entered the house of God and ate the consecrated bread, which is lawful only for priests to eat.(W) And he also gave some to his companions.”(X)
27 Then he said to them, “The Sabbath was made for man,(Y) not man for the Sabbath.(Z) 28 So the Son of Man(AA) is Lord even of the Sabbath.”

8 But immediately, when Jesus perceived in His spirit that they reasoned thus within themselves, He said to them, “Why do you reason about these things in your hearts? 9 (E)Which is easier, to say to the paralytic, ‘Your sins are forgiven you,’ or to say, ‘Arise, take up your bed and walk’? 10 But that you may know that the Son of Man has [b]power on earth to forgive sins”—He said to the paralytic, 11 “I say to you, arise, take up your bed, and go to your house.” 12 Immediately he arose, took up the bed, and went out in the presence of them all, so that all were amazed and (F)glorified God, saying, “We never saw anything like this!”

15 (L)Now it happened, as He was dining in Levi’s house, that many tax collectors and sinners also sat together with Jesus and His disciples; for there were many, and they followed Him. 16 And when the scribes [c]and Pharisees saw Him eating with the tax collectors and sinners, they said to His disciples, “How is it that He eats and drinks with tax collectors and sinners?”
17 When Jesus heard it, He said to them, (M)“Those who are well have no need of a physician, but those who are sick. I did not come to call the righteous, but sinners, [d]to repentance.”
Jesus Is Questioned About Fasting(N)
18 (O)The disciples of John and of the Pharisees were fasting. Then they came and said to Him, “Why do the disciples of John and of the Pharisees fast, but Your disciples do not fast?”
19 And Jesus said to them, “Can the [e]friends of the bridegroom fast while the bridegroom is with them? As long as they have the bridegroom with them they cannot fast. 20 But the days will come when the bridegroom will be (P)taken away from them, and then they will fast in those days. 21 No one sews a piece of unshrunk cloth on an old garment; or else the new piece pulls away from the old, and the tear is made worse. 22 And no one puts new wine into old wineskins; or else the new wine bursts the wineskins, the wine is spilled, and the wineskins are ruined. But new wine must be put into new wineskins.”

Jésus guérit un malade et pardonne ses péchés(A)
2 Quelques jours plus tard, Jésus se rendit de nouveau à Capernaüm. On apprit qu’il était à la maison[a]. 2 Une foule s’y rassembla si nombreuse qu’il ne restait plus de place, pas même devant la porte ; et Jésus leur annonçait la Parole de Dieu. 3 On lui amena un paralysé porté par quatre hommes. 4 Mais ils ne purent pas le transporter jusqu’à Jésus, à cause de la foule. Alors ils montèrent sur le toit, défirent la toiture de la maison au-dessus de l’endroit où se trouvait Jésus et, par cette ouverture, firent glisser le brancard sur lequel le paralysé était couché[b].
5 Lorsqu’il vit la foi de ces gens, Jésus dit au paralysé : Mon enfant, tes péchés te sont pardonnés.
6 Or, il y avait, assis là, quelques spécialistes de la Loi qui raisonnaient ainsi en eux-mêmes : 7 Comment cet homme ose-t-il parler ainsi ? Il blasphème ! Qui peut pardonner les péchés si ce n’est Dieu seul ?
8 Jésus sut aussitôt, en son esprit, les raisonnements qu’ils se faisaient en eux-mêmes ; il leur dit : Pourquoi raisonnez-vous ainsi en vous-mêmes ? 9 Qu’est-ce qui est le plus facile ? Dire au paralysé : « Tes péchés te sont pardonnés », ou dire : « Lève-toi, prends ton brancard et marche » ? 10 Eh bien, vous saurez que le Fils de l’homme a, sur la terre, le pouvoir de pardonner les péchés.
11 Alors il déclara au paralysé : Je te l’ordonne : lève-toi, prends ton brancard, et rentre chez toi !
12 Aussitôt, cet homme se leva, prit son brancard, et sortit devant tout le monde.
Tous en furent stupéfaits et rendirent gloire à Dieu en disant : Nous n’avons jamais rien vu de pareil !
Jésus est contesté(B)
13 Une nouvelle fois, Jésus s’en alla du côté du lac. Les foules venaient à sa rencontre et il les enseignait. 14 En passant, il vit Lévi, fils d’Alphée, installé à son poste de péage, et il lui dit : Suis-moi !
Lévi se leva et le suivit.
15 Comme Jésus était reçu pour un repas dans la maison de Lévi, beaucoup de collecteurs d’impôts et de pécheurs notoires prirent place à table avec ses disciples et avec lui. Car ils étaient nombreux à le suivre.
16 En voyant qu’il mangeait avec ces pécheurs notoires et ces collecteurs d’impôts, les spécialistes de la Loi qui appartenaient au parti des pharisiens interpellèrent ses disciples : Comment votre maître peut-il manger de la sorte avec des collecteurs d’impôts et des pécheurs notoires ?
17 Jésus, qui les avait entendus, leur dit : Les bien-portants n’ont pas besoin de médecin ; ce sont les malades qui en ont besoin. Je ne suis pas venu appeler des justes, mais des pécheurs.
18 Un jour que les disciples de Jean et les pharisiens étaient en train de jeûner, ils vinrent trouver Jésus et lui demandèrent : Comment se fait-il que tes disciples ne jeûnent pas, alors que les disciples de Jean et les pharisiens le font ?
19 Jésus leur répondit : Comment les invités d’une noce pourraient-ils jeûner pendant que le marié est avec eux ? Aussi longtemps que le marié se trouve parmi eux, ils ne peuvent pas jeûner ! 20 Le temps viendra où il leur sera enlevé. Alors, ce jour-là, ils jeûneront.
21 Personne ne raccommode un vieux vêtement avec un morceau d’étoffe neuve. Sinon, la pièce rapportée tire sur la vieille étoffe et en arrache une partie. Finalement, la déchirure est pire qu’avant. 22 De même, personne ne verse du vin nouveau dans de vieilles outres, sinon le vin nouveau les fait éclater, et voilà le vin perdu, et les outres aussi. A vin nouveau, outres neuves !
Jésus, maître du sabbat(C)
23 Un jour de sabbat, Jésus traversait des champs de blé, et ses disciples, tout en marchant, cueillaient des épis.
24 Les pharisiens le firent remarquer à Jésus : Regarde ! Pourquoi tes disciples font-ils le jour du sabbat ce qui est interdit ce jour-là ?
25 Il leur répondit : N’avez-vous jamais lu ce qu’a fait David lorsque lui et ses compagnons ont eu faim et qu’ils n’avaient rien à manger ? 26 Il est entré dans le sanctuaire de Dieu (ce récit se trouve dans la section où il est question du grand-prêtre Abiatar)[c], il a mangé les pains exposés devant Dieu que seuls les prêtres ont le droit de manger, et il en a donné aussi à ses hommes.
27 Et il ajouta : Le sabbat a été fait pour l’homme, et non pas l’homme pour le sabbat. 28 C’est pourquoi le Fils de l’homme est aussi maître du sabbat.
