Walang Kabuluhan ang Kayamanan

Narito ang isang kawalan ng katarungan na nagaganap sa mundo: Isang tao na binigyan ng Diyos ng malaking kayamanan, maraming ari-arian, at karangalan. Sa kasawiang-palad, hindi niloob ng Diyos na tamasahin niya ang kasiyahang dulot ng mga bagay na ito; bagkus ay iba ang nakinabang. Ito man ay walang kabuluhan[a] at nagdudulot lamang ng sama ng loob. Mabuti pang di hamak ang sanggol na ipinanganak na patay kaysa isang taong nagkaanak ng 100 at nabuhay nang matagal ngunit hindi naranasan ang maging masaya at hindi pinarangalan nang siya ay ilibing. Wala ring kabuluhang[b] matatamo ang isang sanggol kahit siya ipanganak sapagkat mamamatay din siya at malilimutan. Hindi nito nakita ang araw ni natikman ang mabuhay, ngunit mayroon naman siyang ganap na kapayapaan. Kaya mabuti pa siya nang hindi hamak kaysa isang taong nabuhay nang 2,000 taon ngunit di nakaranas ng kasiyahan. Hindi ba't iisa lang ang uuwian ng lahat?

Nagpapakapagod ang tao para sa kanyang tiyan ngunit kailanma'y di siya nagkaroon ng kasiyahan. Ano ang kahigtan ng matalino sa mangmang? Ano ang mapapala ng isang mahirap kahit malaman niya ang pasikut-sikot ng buhay? Mabuti pa ay masiyahan sa anumang kalagayan kaysa mangarap nang di naman makakamtan. Ito man ay walang kabuluhan,[c] tulad ng paghahabol sa hangin.

10 Lahat ng nangyayari sa daigdig ay alam na noong una pa, at ang tao'y di makapananaig laban sa kapangyarihang higit sa kanya. 11 Habang humahaba ang pagtatalo, lalo lang nawawalan ng kabuluhan; kaya paano masasabing nakahihigit ang isang tao sa kapwa? 12 Sino ang nakaaalam kung ano ang mabuti sa taong nabubuhay sa maikling panahon at pagkatapos ay mawawalang tulad ng anino? Sino ang makakapagsabi kung ano ang mangyayari pagkamatay niya?

If a man fathers a hundred children and lives many years, so that (F)the days of his years are many, but his soul is not satisfied with life's (G)good things, and he also has no (H)burial, I say that (I)a stillborn child is better off than he. For it comes in vanity and goes in darkness, and in darkness its name is covered. Moreover, it has not (J)seen the sun or known anything, yet it finds (K)rest rather than he. Even though he should live a thousand years twice over, yet enjoy[b] no good—do not all go to the one place?

(L)All the toil of man is for his mouth, yet his appetite is not satisfied.[c] For what advantage has the wise man (M)over the fool? And what does the poor man have who knows how to conduct himself before the living? Better (N)is the sight of the eyes than the wandering of the appetite: this also is (O)vanity and a striving after wind.

10 Whatever has come to be has (P)already been named, and it is known what man is, and that he is not able to (Q)dispute with one stronger than he. 11 The more words, the more vanity, and what is the advantage to man? 12 For who knows what is good for man while he lives the few days of his (R)vain[d] life, which he passes like (S)a shadow? For who can tell man what will be (T)after him under the sun?

I have seen another evil under the sun, and it weighs heavily on mankind: God gives some people wealth, possessions and honor, so that they lack nothing their hearts desire, but God does not grant them the ability to enjoy them,(A) and strangers enjoy them instead. This is meaningless, a grievous evil.(B)

A man may have a hundred children and live many years; yet no matter how long he lives, if he cannot enjoy his prosperity and does not receive proper burial, I say that a stillborn(C) child is better off than he.(D) It comes without meaning, it departs in darkness, and in darkness its name is shrouded. Though it never saw the sun or knew anything, it has more rest than does that man— even if he lives a thousand years twice over but fails to enjoy his prosperity. Do not all go to the same place?(E)

Everyone’s toil is for their mouth,
    yet their appetite is never satisfied.(F)
What advantage have the wise over fools?(G)
What do the poor gain
    by knowing how to conduct themselves before others?
Better what the eye sees
    than the roving of the appetite.
This too is meaningless,
    a chasing after the wind.(H)

    and what humanity is has been known;
no one can contend
    with someone who is stronger.
11 The more the words,
    the less the meaning,
    and how does that profit anyone?

12 For who knows what is good for a person in life, during the few and meaningless days(J) they pass through like a shadow?(K) Who can tell them what will happen under the sun after they are gone?
