3 Siehe, ich will meinen Engel senden, der vor mir her den Weg bereiten soll. Und bald wird kommen zu seinem Tempel der HERR, den ihr suchet; der Engel des Bundes, des ihr begehret, siehe, er kommt! spricht der HERR Zebaoth.

2 Wer wird aber den Tag seiner Zukunft erleiden können, und wer wird bestehen, wenn er wird erscheinen? Denn er ist wie das Feuer eines Goldschmieds und wie die Seifen der Wäscher.

3 Er wird sitzen und schmelzen und das Silber reinigen; er wird die Kinder Levi reinigen und läutern wie Gold und Silber. Dann werden sie dem HERRN Speisopfer bringen in Gerechtigkeit,

4 und wird dem HERRN wohl gefallen das Speisopfer Juda's und Jerusalems wie vormals und vor langen Jahren.

5 Und ich will zu euch kommen und euch strafen und will ein schneller Zeuge sein wider die Zauberer, Ehebrecher und Meineidigen und wider die, so Gewalt und Unrecht tun den Tagelöhnern, Witwen und Waisen und den Fremdling drücken und mich nicht fürchten, spricht der HERR Zebaoth.

6 Denn ich bin der HERR und wandle mich nicht; und es soll mit euch Kindern Jakobs nicht gar aus sein.

7 Ihr seid von eurer Väter Zeit immerdar abgewichen von meinen Geboten und habt sie nicht gehalten. So bekehrt euch nun zu mir, so will ich mich zu euch auch kehren, spricht der HERR Zebaoth. So sprecht ihr: "Worin sollen wir uns bekehren?"

8 Ist's recht, daß ein Mensch Gott täuscht, wie ihr mich den täuschet? So sprecht ihr: "Womit täuschen wir dich?" Am Zehnten und Hebopfer.

9 Darum seid ihr auch verflucht, daß euch alles unter den Händen zerrinnt; denn ihr täuscht mich allesamt.

10 Bringt mir den Zehnten ganz in mein Kornhaus, auf daß in meinem Hause Speise sei, und prüft mich hierin, spricht der HERR Zebaoth, ob ich euch nicht des Himmels Fenster auftun werde und Segen herabschütten die Fülle.

11 Und ich will für euch den Fresser schelten, daß er euch die Frucht auf dem Felde nicht verderben soll und der Weinstock im Acker euch nicht unfruchtbar sei, spricht der HERR Zebaoth;

12 daß euch alle Heiden sollen selig preisen, denn ihr sollt ein wertes Land sein, spricht der HERR Zebaoth.

13 Ihr redet hart wider mich, spricht der HERR. So sprecht ihr: "Was reden wir wider dich?"

14 Damit daß ihr sagt: Es ist umsonst, daß man Gott dient; und was nützt es, daß wir sein Gebot halten und ein hartes Leben vor dem HERR Zebaoth führen?

15 Darum preisen wir die Verächter; denn die Gottlosen nehmen zu; sie versuchen Gott, und alles geht ihnen wohl aus.

16 Aber die Gottesfürchtigen trösten sich untereinander also: Der HERR merkt und hört es, und vor ihm ist ein Denkzettel geschrieben für die, so den HERRN fürchten und an seinen Namen gedenken.

17 Sie sollen spricht der HERR Zebaoth, des Tages, den ich machen will, mein Eigentum sein; und ich will ihrer schonen, wie ein Mann seines Sohnes schont, der ihm dient.

18 Und ihr sollt dagegen wiederum den Unterschied sehen, was für ein Unterschied sei zwischen dem Gerechten und dem Gottlosen, und zwischen dem, der Gott dient, und dem, der ihm nicht dient.

und will ein schneller Zeuge sein wider die Zauberer und wider die Ehebrecher
und wider die Meineidigen und wider die,
welche die Tagelöhner, Witwen und Waisen übervorteilen
und die Fremdlinge unterdrücken und mich nicht fürchten,
spricht der Herr der Heerscharen.
6 Denn ich, der Herr, verändere mich nicht,
darum seid ihr, Kinder Jakobs, nicht aufgerieben worden.

Abgaben und Segnungen

7 Seit den Tagen eurer Väter seid ihr von meinen Geboten abgewichen
und habt sie nicht befolgt.
Kehret um zu mir, so will ich mich zu euch kehren,
spricht der Herr der Heerscharen;
aber ihr fragt: «Worin sollen wir umkehren?»
8 Soll ein Mensch Gott berauben, wie ihr mich beraubet?
Aber ihr fragt: «Wessen haben wir dich beraubt?»
Der Zehnten und der Abgaben!
9 Mit dem Fluch seid ihr belegt worden,
denn mich habt ihr betrogen,
ihr, das ganze Volk!
10 Bringet aber den Zehnten ganz in das Kornhaus,
auf daß Speise in meinem Hause sei,
und prüfet mich doch dadurch,
spricht der Herr der Heerscharen,
ob ich euch nicht des Himmels Fenster auftun
und euch Segen in überreicher Fülle herabschütten werde!
11 Und ich will für euch den Fresser schelten,

Der Unterschied zwischen dem Gerechten und dem Gottlosen am Tag des Herrn

13 Ihr habt harte Worte wider mich ausgestoßen, spricht der Herr.
Und ihr fragt noch: «Was haben wir untereinander wider dich geredet?»
14 Ihr habt gesagt: «Es ist umsonst, daß man Gott dient,
und was nützt es uns, seine Ordnung zu halten
und vor dem Herrn der Heerscharen in Trauer einherzugehen?
15 Und nun preisen wir die Übermütigen selig;
denn die Übeltäter stehen aufrecht
und die, welche Gott versucht haben, kommen davon!»
16 Da besprachen sich auch die Gottesfürchtigen miteinander,
und der Herr merkte darauf und hörte es,
und ein Gedenkbuch ward vor ihm geschrieben
für die, welche den Herrn fürchten
und seinen Namen hochachten.
17 Und sie werden von mir, spricht der Herr der Heerscharen,
am Tage, den ich bereite, als mein auserwähltes Eigentum behandelt werden,
und ich will ihrer schonen, wie ein Mann seines Sohnes schont, der ihm dient.
18 Da werdet ihr wiederum sehen, was für ein Unterschied besteht
zwischen dem Gerechten und dem Gottlosen,
zwischen dem, der Gott dient,
und dem, der ihm nicht dient.

Der Tag des Herrn

19 [b] (4:1) Denn siehe, der Tag kommt,
brennend wie ein Ofen!
Da werden alle Übermütigen und alle, die gottlos handeln, wie Stoppeln sein,
und der zukünftige Tag wird sie anzünden,
spricht der Herr der Heerscharen,
daß ihnen weder Wurzel noch Zweig übrigbleibt.
20 (4:2) Euch aber, die ihr meinen Namen fürchtet,
soll aufgehen die Sonne der Gerechtigkeit und Heilung unter ihren Flügeln;
und ihr werdet herauskommen und hüpfen wie Kälber aus dem Stall!
21 (4:3) Und ihr werdet die Gottlosen zertreten;
denn sie werden wie Asche sein unter euren Fußsohlen
am Tage, da ich handle,
spricht der Herr der Heerscharen.

22 (4:4) Seid eingedenk des Gesetzes Moses, meines Knechtes,
das ich ihm auf dem Horeb für ganz Israel befohlen habe,
der Pflichten und der Rechte!
23 (4:5) Siehe, ich sende euch den Propheten Elia,
ehe denn da komme der große und furchtbare Tag des Herrn;
24 (4:6) der soll das Herz der Väter den Kindern[c]
und das Herz der Kinder wieder ihren Vätern zuwenden,
damit ich bei meinem Kommen das Land nicht mit dem Banne schlagen muß!

3 1 “I am about to send my messenger,[a] who will clear the way before me. Indeed, the Lord[b] you are seeking will suddenly come to his temple, and the messenger[c] of the covenant, whom you long for, is certainly coming,” says the Lord of Heaven’s Armies.

2 Who can endure the day of his coming? Who can keep standing when he appears? For he will be like a refiner’s fire,[d] like a launderer’s soap. 3 He will act like a refiner and purifier of silver and will cleanse the Levites and refine them like gold and silver. Then they will offer the Lord a proper offering. 4 The offerings[e] of Judah and Jerusalem will be pleasing to the Lord as in former times and years past.

5 “I[f] will come to you in judgment. I will be quick to testify against those who practice divination; those who commit adultery; those who break promises;[g] and those who exploit workers, widows, and orphans,[h] who refuse to help[i] the resident foreigner[j] and in this way show they do not fear me,” says the Lord of Heaven’s Armies.

Resistance to the Lord through Selfishness

6 “Since, I, the Lord, do not go back on my promises,[k] you, sons of Jacob, have not perished. 7 From the days of your ancestors you have ignored[l] my commandments[m] and have not kept them. Return to me, and I will return to you,” says the Lord of Heaven’s Armies. “But you say, ‘How should we return?’ 8 Can a person rob[n] God? You are indeed robbing me, but you say, ‘How are we robbing you?’ In tithes and contributions![o] 9 You are bound for judgment[p] because you are robbing me—this whole nation is guilty.[q]

10 “Bring the entire tithe into the storehouse[r] so that there may be food in my temple. Test me in this matter,” says the Lord of Heaven’s Armies, “to see if I will not open for you the windows of heaven and pour out blessing for you until there is no room for it all. 11 Then I will stop the plague[s] from ruining your crops,[t] and the vine will not lose its fruit before harvest,” says the Lord of Heaven’s Armies. 12 “All nations will call you blessed, for you indeed will live in[u] a delightful land,” says the Lord of Heaven’s Armies.

Resistance to the Lord through Self-sufficiency

13 “You have criticized me sharply,”[v] says the Lord, “but you ask, ‘How have we criticized you?’ 14 You have said, ‘It is useless to serve God. How have we been helped[w] by keeping his requirements and going about like mourners before the Lord of Heaven’s Armies?[x] 15 So now we consider the arrogant to be blessed; indeed, those who practice evil are successful.[y] In fact, those who challenge[z] God escape!’”

16 Then those who respected[aa] the Lord spoke to one another, and the Lord took notice.[ab] A scroll[ac] was prepared before him in which were recorded the names of those who respected the Lord and honored his name. 17 “They will belong to me,” says the Lord of Heaven’s Armies, “in the day when I prepare my own special property.[ad] I will spare them as a man spares his son who serves him. 18 Then once more you will see that I make a distinction between[ae] the righteous and the wicked, between the one who serves God and the one who does not.

  1. Malachi 3:1 tn In Hebrew the phrase “my messenger” is מַלְאָכִי (malʾakhi), the same form as the prophet’s name (see note on the name “Malachi” in 1:1). However, here the messenger appears to be an eschatological figure who is about to appear, as the following context suggests. According to 4:5, this messenger is “Elijah the prophet,” whom the NT identifies as John the Baptist (Matt 11:10; Mark 1:2) because he came in the “spirit and power” of Elijah (Matt 11:14; 17:11-12; Lk 1:17).
  2. Malachi 3:1 tn Here the Hebrew term הָאָדוֹן (haʾadon) is used, not יְהוָה (yehvah, typically rendered Lord). Thus the focus is not on the Lord as the covenant God, but on his role as master.
  3. Malachi 3:1 sn This messenger of the covenant may be equated with my messenger (that is, Elijah) mentioned earlier in the verse, or with the Lord himself. In either case the messenger functions as an enforcer of the covenant. Note the following verses, which depict purifying judgment on a people that has violated the Lord’s covenant.
  4. Malachi 3:2 sn The refiner’s fire was used to purify metal and refine it by melting it and allowing the dross, which floated to the top, to be scooped off.

  19. Malachi 3:11 tn Heb “the eater” (אֹכֵל, ʾokhel), a general term for any kind of threat to crops and livelihood. This is understood as a reference to a locust plague by a number of English versions: NAB, NRSV “the locust”; NIV “pests”; NCV, TEV “insects.”

Breaking Covenant by Withholding Tithes

6 “I the Lord do not change.(X) So you, the descendants of Jacob, are not destroyed.(Y) 7 Ever since the time of your ancestors you have turned away(Z) from my decrees and have not kept them. Return(AA) to me, and I will return to you,”(AB) says the Lord Almighty.

“But you ask,(AC) ‘How are we to return?’

8 “Will a mere mortal rob(AD) God? Yet you rob me.

“But you ask, ‘How are we robbing you?’

“In tithes(AE) and offerings. 9 You are under a curse(AF)—your whole nation—because you are robbing me. 10 Bring the whole tithe(AG) into the storehouse,(AH) that there may be food in my house. Test me in this,” says the Lord Almighty, “and see if I will not throw open the floodgates(AI) of heaven and pour out(AJ) so much blessing(AK) that there will not be room enough to store it.(AL) 11 I will prevent pests from devouring(AM) your crops, and the vines in your fields will not drop their fruit before it is ripe,(AN)” says the Lord Almighty. 12 “Then all the nations will call you blessed,(AO) for yours will be a delightful land,”(AP) says the Lord Almighty.(AQ)

Israel Speaks Arrogantly Against God

13 “You have spoken arrogantly(AR) against me,” says the Lord.

“Yet you ask,(AS) ‘What have we said against you?’

14 “You have said, ‘It is futile(AT) to serve(AU) God. What do we gain by carrying out his requirements(AV) and going about like mourners(AW) before the Lord Almighty? 15 But now we call the arrogant(AX) blessed. Certainly evildoers(AY) prosper,(AZ) and even when they put God to the test, they get away with it.’”

The Faithful Remnant

16 Then those who feared the Lord talked with each other, and the Lord listened and heard.(BA) A scroll(BB) of remembrance was written in his presence concerning those who feared(BC) the Lord and honored his name.

17 “On the day when I act,” says the Lord Almighty, “they will be my(BD) treasured possession.(BE) I will spare(BF) them, just as a father has compassion and spares his son(BG) who serves him. 18 And you will again see the distinction between the righteous(BH) and the wicked, between those who serve God and those who do not.(BI)
