2 Und nun, ihr Priester, dies Gebot gilt euch.
2 Wo ihr's nicht hört noch zu Herzen nehmen werdet, daß ihr meinem Namen die Ehre gebt, spricht der HERR Zebaoth, so werde ich den Fluch unter euch schicken und euren Segen verfluchen, ja verfluchen werde ich ihn, weil ihr's nicht wolltet zu Herzen nehmen.
3 Siehe, ich will schelten euch samt der Saat und den Kot eurer Festopfer euch ins Angesicht werfen, und er soll an euch kleben bleiben.
4 So werdet ihr dann erfahren, daß ich solches Gebot zu euch gesandt habe, daß es mein Bund sein sollte mit Levi, spricht der HERR Zebaoth.
5 Denn mein Bund war mit ihm zum Leben und Frieden, und ich gab ihm die Furcht, daß er mich fürchtete und meinen Namen scheute.
6 Das Gesetz der Wahrheit war in seinem Munde, und ward kein Böses in seinen Lippen gefunden. Er wandelte vor mir friedsam und aufrichtig und bekehrte viele von Sünden.
7 Denn des Priesters Lippen sollen die Lehre bewahren, daß man aus seinem Munde das Gesetz suche; denn er ist ein Engel des HERRN Zebaoth.
8 Ihr aber seid von dem Wege abgetreten und ärgert viele im Gesetz und habt den Bund Levis gebrochen, spricht der HERR Zebaoth.
9 Darum habe ich auch euch gemacht, daß ihr verachtet und unwert seid vor dem ganzen Volk, weil ihr meine Wege nicht haltet und seht Personen an im Gesetz.
10 Haben nicht alle einen Vater? Hat uns nicht ein Gott geschaffen? Warum verachten wir denn einer den andern und entheilgen den Bund, mit unsern Vätern gemacht?
11 Denn Juda ist ein Verräter geworden, und in Israel und zu Jerusalem geschehen Greuel. Denn Juda entheiligt, was dem HERRN heilig ist und was er liebhat, und buhlt mit eines fremden Gottes Tochter.
12 Aber der HERR wird den, so solches tut, ausrotten aus der Hütte Jakobs, beide, Meister und Schüler, samt dem, der dem HERRN Zebaoth Speisopfer bringt.
13 Weiter tut ihr auch das: ihr bedeckt den Altar des HERRN mit Tränen und Weinen und Seufzen, daß ich nicht mehr mag das Speisopfer ansehen noch etwas Angenehmes von euren Händen empfangen.
14 Und so sprecht ihr: "Warum das?" Darum daß der HERR zwischen dir und dem Weibe deiner Jugend Zeuge war, die du verachtest, so sie doch deine Gesellin und ein Weib deines Bundes ist.
15 Also tat der Eine nicht, und war doch großen Geistes. Was tat aber der Eine? Er suchte den Samen, von Gott verheißen. Darum so sehet euch vor vor eurem Geist und verachte keiner das Weib seiner Jugend.
16 Wer ihr aber gram ist und verstößt sie, spricht der HERR, der Gott Israels, der bedeckt mit Frevel sein Kleid, spricht der HERR Zebaoth. Darum so seht euch vor vor eurem Geist und verachtet sie nicht.
17 Ihr macht den HERRN unwillig durch eure Reden. So sprecht ihr: "Womit machen wir ihn unwillig?" damit daß ihr sprecht: "Wer Böses tut, der gefällt dem HERRN, und zu solchen hat er Lust", oder: "Wo ist der Gott, der da strafe?"

Warnung an die Priester
2 Und nun, ihr Priester, dieses Gebot gilt euch!
2 Wenn ihr nicht hören wollt und es euch nicht von Herzen angelegen sein lasset,
meinem Namen die Ehre zu geben, spricht der Herr der Heerscharen,
so schleudere ich den Fluch wider euch und verfluche eure Segenssprüche;
und ich habe sie auch schon verflucht; denn ihr nehmt es nicht zu Herzen!
3 Siehe, ich schelte euch die Saat
und will euch Kot ins Angesicht streuen,
den Kot eurer Feste,
und man wird euch zu ihm hintragen;
4 und ihr sollt erfahren, daß ich euch diesen Befehl gesandt habe,
auf daß mein Bund mit Levi bestehe,
spricht der Herr der Heerscharen.
5 Mein Bund mit ihm war Leben und Friede,
und ich verlieh ihm beides, damit er mich fürchtete,
und er fürchtete mich auch
und hatte Ehrfurcht vor meinem Namen.
6 Das Gesetz der Wahrheit war in seinem Munde,
und nichts Verkehrtes wurde auf seinen Lippen erfunden;
er wandelte mit mir friedsam und rechtschaffen,
und viele brachte er zur Umkehr von der Missetat.
7 Denn des Priesters Lippen sollen die Erkenntnis bewahren,
und aus seinem Munde soll man das Gesetz erfragen;
denn er ist ein Bote des Herrn der Heerscharen.
8 Ihr aber seid vom Wege abgewichen,
ihr seid schuld, daß viele am Gesetz Anstoß genommen haben,
ihr habt den Bund mit Levi mißbraucht,
spricht der Herr der Heerscharen.
9 Darum habe auch ich euch
beim ganzen Volk verachtet und unwert gemacht,
weil ihr meine Wege nicht bewahrt,
sondern bei Anwendung des Gesetzes die Person ansehet.
Vorwürfe an das treulose Volk
10 Haben wir nicht alle einen Vater?
Hat uns nicht ein Gott erschaffen?
Warum sind wir denn so treulos, einer gegen den andern,
und entweihen den Bund unsrer Väter?
11 Juda hat treulos gehandelt
und einen Greuel verübt in Israel und Jerusalem;
denn Juda hat das Heiligtum des Herrn entweiht, welches er liebte,
und hat die Tochter eines fremden Gottes gefreit.
12 Der Herr wolle dem Manne, der solches tut,
Zeugen und Verteidiger ausrotten aus den Zelten Jakobs,
und jeden,der dem Herrn der Heerscharen Speisopfer darbringt!
13 Und zum andern tut ihr auch das:
Ihr bedeckt den Altar des Herrn mit Tränen,
mit Weinen und Seufzen,
so daß er sich nicht mehr zum Speisopfer wenden
und es nicht mit Wohlgefallen aus euren Händen annehmen mag.
14 Und ihr fragt: «Warum?»
Weil der Herr Zeuge war zwischen dir und der Frau deiner Jugend,
welcher du nun untreu geworden bist,
obschon sie deine Gefährtin und die Frau deines Bundes ist!
15 Und hat er sie nicht eins gemacht und geistesverwandt mit ihm?
Und wonach soll das eine trachten?
Nach göttlichem Samen!
So hütet euch denn in eurem Geiste,
und niemand werde dem Weibe seiner Jugend untreu!
16 Denn ich hasse die Ehescheidung,
spricht der Herr, der Gott Israels,
und daß man sein Kleid mit Frevel zudeckt,
spricht der Herr der Heerscharen;
darum hütet euch in eurem Geist
und seid nicht treulos!
Der Tag des Gerichtes
17 Ihr habt den Herrn bemüht mit euren Reden;
und ihr fragt noch: «Womit haben wir ihn bemüht?»
Damit, daß ihr sagt: «Wer Böses tut, der ist gut in den Augen des Herrn,
und an solchen hat er ein Wohlgefallen!»
oder «Wo ist der Gott des Gerichts?»

Additional Warning to the Priests
2 “And now, you priests, this warning is for you.(A) 2 If you do not listen,(B) and if you do not resolve to honor(C) my name,” says the Lord Almighty, “I will send a curse(D) on you, and I will curse your blessings.(E) Yes, I have already cursed them, because you have not resolved to honor me.
3 “Because of you I will rebuke your descendants[a]; I will smear on your faces the dung(F) from your festival sacrifices, and you will be carried off with it.(G) 4 And you will know that I have sent you this warning so that my covenant with Levi(H) may continue,” says the Lord Almighty. 5 “My covenant was with him, a covenant(I) of life and peace,(J) and I gave them to him; this called for reverence(K) and he revered me and stood in awe of my name. 6 True instruction(L) was in his mouth and nothing false was found on his lips. He walked(M) with me in peace(N) and uprightness,(O) and turned many from sin.(P)
7 “For the lips of a priest(Q) ought to preserve knowledge, because he is the messenger(R) of the Lord Almighty and people seek instruction from his mouth.(S) 8 But you have turned from the way(T) and by your teaching have caused many to stumble;(U) you have violated the covenant(V) with Levi,”(W) says the Lord Almighty. 9 “So I have caused you to be despised(X) and humiliated(Y) before all the people, because you have not followed my ways but have shown partiality(Z) in matters of the law.”(AA)
Breaking Covenant Through Divorce
10 Do we not all have one Father[b]?(AB) Did not one God create us?(AC) Why do we profane the covenant(AD) of our ancestors by being unfaithful(AE) to one another?
11 Judah has been unfaithful. A detestable(AF) thing has been committed in Israel and in Jerusalem: Judah has desecrated the sanctuary the Lord loves(AG) by marrying(AH) women who worship a foreign god.(AI) 12 As for the man who does this, whoever he may be, may the Lord remove(AJ) him from the tents of Jacob[c](AK)—even though he brings an offering(AL) to the Lord Almighty.
13 Another thing you do: You flood the Lord’s altar with tears.(AM) You weep and wail(AN) because he no longer looks with favor(AO) on your offerings or accepts them with pleasure from your hands.(AP) 14 You ask,(AQ) “Why?” It is because the Lord is the witness(AR) between you and the wife of your youth.(AS) You have been unfaithful to her, though she is your partner, the wife of your marriage covenant.(AT)
15 Has not the one God made you?(AU) You belong to him in body and spirit. And what does the one God seek? Godly offspring.[d](AV) So be on your guard,(AW) and do not be unfaithful(AX) to the wife of your youth.
16 “The man who hates and divorces his wife,(AY)” says the Lord, the God of Israel, “does violence to the one he should protect,”[e](AZ) says the Lord Almighty.
So be on your guard,(BA) and do not be unfaithful.
Breaking Covenant Through Injustice
17 You have wearied(BB) the Lord with your words.
“How have we wearied him?” you ask.(BC)
By saying, “All who do evil are good in the eyes of the Lord, and he is pleased(BD) with them” or “Where is the God of justice?(BE)”

2 And now, O ye priests, this commandment is for you.
2 If ye will not hear, and if ye will not lay it to heart, to give glory unto my name, saith the Lord of hosts, I will even send a curse upon you, and I will curse your blessings: yea, I have cursed them already, because ye do not lay it to heart.
3 Behold, I will corrupt your seed, and spread dung upon your faces, even the dung of your solemn feasts; and one shall take you away with it.
4 And ye shall know that I have sent this commandment unto you, that my covenant might be with Levi, saith the Lord of hosts.
5 My covenant was with him of life and peace; and I gave them to him for the fear wherewith he feared me, and was afraid before my name.
6 The law of truth was in his mouth, and iniquity was not found in his lips: he walked with me in peace and equity, and did turn many away from iniquity.
7 For the priest's lips should keep knowledge, and they should seek the law at his mouth: for he is the messenger of the Lord of hosts.
8 But ye are departed out of the way; ye have caused many to stumble at the law; ye have corrupted the covenant of Levi, saith the Lord of hosts.
9 Therefore have I also made you contemptible and base before all the people, according as ye have not kept my ways, but have been partial in the law.
10 Have we not all one father? hath not one God created us? why do we deal treacherously every man against his brother, by profaning the covenant of our fathers?
11 Judah hath dealt treacherously, and an abomination is committed in Israel and in Jerusalem; for Judah hath profaned the holiness of the Lord which he loved, and hath married the daughter of a strange god.
12 The Lord will cut off the man that doeth this, the master and the scholar, out of the tabernacles of Jacob, and him that offereth an offering unto the Lord of hosts.
13 And this have ye done again, covering the altar of the Lord with tears, with weeping, and with crying out, insomuch that he regardeth not the offering any more, or receiveth it with good will at your hand.
14 Yet ye say, Wherefore? Because the Lord hath been witness between thee and the wife of thy youth, against whom thou hast dealt treacherously: yet is she thy companion, and the wife of thy covenant.
15 And did not he make one? Yet had he the residue of the spirit. And wherefore one? That he might seek a godly seed. Therefore take heed to your spirit, and let none deal treacherously against the wife of his youth.
16 For the Lord, the God of Israel, saith that he hateth putting away: for one covereth violence with his garment, saith the Lord of hosts: therefore take heed to your spirit, that ye deal not treacherously.
17 Ye have wearied the Lord with your words. Yet ye say, Wherein have we wearied him? When ye say, Every one that doeth evil is good in the sight of the Lord, and he delighteth in them; or, Where is the God of judgment?
