A ingratidão do povo. O formalismo dos sacerdotes
1 Peso da palavra do Senhor contra Israel, pelo ministério de Malaquias. 2 Eu vos amei, diz o Senhor; mas vós dizeis: Em que nos amaste? Não foi Esaú irmão de Jacó? — disse o Senhor; todavia amei a Jacó 3 e aborreci a Esaú; e fiz dos seus montes uma assolação e dei a sua herança aos dragões do deserto. 4 Ainda que Edom diga: Empobrecidos somos, porém tornaremos a edificar os lugares desertos, assim diz o Senhor dos Exércitos: Eles edificarão, e eu destruirei, e lhes chamarão Termo-de-Impiedade e Povo-Contra-Quem-O-Senhor-Está-Irado-Para-Sempre. 5 E os vossos olhos o verão, e direis: O Senhor seja engrandecido desde os termos de Israel.
6 O filho honrará o pai, e o servo, ao seu senhor; e, se eu sou Pai, onde está a minha honra? E, se eu sou Senhor, onde está o meu temor? — diz o Senhor dos Exércitos a vós, ó sacerdotes, que desprezais o meu nome e dizeis: Em que desprezamos nós o teu nome? 7 Ofereceis sobre o meu altar pão imundo e dizeis: Em que te havemos profanado? Nisto, que dizeis: A mesa do Senhor é desprezível. 8 Porque, quando trazeis animal cego para o sacrificardes, não faz mal! E, quando ofereceis o coxo ou o enfermo, não faz mal! Ora, apresenta-o ao teu príncipe; terá ele agrado em ti? Ou aceitará ele a tua pessoa? — diz o Senhor dos Exércitos. 9 Agora, pois, suplicai o favor de Deus, e ele terá piedade de nós; isto veio da vossa mão; aceitará ele a vossa pessoa? — diz o Senhor dos Exércitos. 10 Quem há também entre vós que feche as portas e não acenda debalde o fogo do meu altar? Eu não tenho prazer em vós, diz o Senhor dos Exércitos, nem aceitarei da vossa mão a oblação. 11 Mas, desde o nascente do sol até ao poente, será grande entre as nações o meu nome; e, em todo lugar, se oferecerá ao meu nome incenso e uma oblação pura; porque o meu nome será grande entre as nações, diz o Senhor dos Exércitos. 12 Mas vós o profanais, quando dizeis: A mesa do Senhor é impura, e o seu produto, a sua comida, é desprezível. 13 E dizeis: Eis aqui, que canseira! E o lançastes ao desprezo, diz o Senhor dos Exércitos: vós ofereceis o roubado, e o coxo, e o enfermo; assim fazeis a oferta; ser-me-á aceito isto de vossa mão? — diz o Senhor. 14 Pois maldito seja o enganador, que, tendo animal no seu rebanho, promete e oferece ao Senhor uma coisa vil; porque eu sou grande Rei, diz o Senhor dos Exércitos, o meu nome será tremendo entre as nações.

1 Esta é a mensagem que o Senhor anunciou a Israel por meio do profeta Malaquias.[a]
O amor de Deus por Israel
2 “Eu sempre amei vocês”, diz o Senhor.
Mas vocês perguntam: “De que maneira nos amou?”.
E o Senhor responde: “Foi desta maneira: amei seu antepassado Jacó, 3 mas rejeitei o irmão dele, Esaú, e devastei sua região montanhosa. Transformei a propriedade de Esaú num deserto para chacais”.
4 O povo de Edom talvez diga: “Fomos arrasados, mas reconstruiremos as ruínas”.
O Senhor dos Exércitos, porém, declara: “Podem reconstruir, mas eu demolirei tudo outra vez. Seu país ficará conhecido como ‘Terra da Maldade’, e seu povo será chamado de ‘Povo Contra o Qual o Senhor Está Irado Para Sempre’. 5 Quando vocês virem a destruição com os próprios olhos, dirão: ‘A grandeza do Senhor vai muito além das fronteiras de Israel!’”.
Sacrifícios indignos
6 O Senhor dos Exércitos diz aos sacerdotes: “O filho honra seu pai, e o servo respeita seu senhor. Se eu sou seu pai e seu senhor, onde estão a honra e o respeito que mereço? Vocês desprezam meu nome!
“Mas vocês perguntam: ‘De que maneira desprezamos teu nome?’.
7 “Vocês o desprezam oferecendo sacrifícios contaminados sobre meu altar.
“E vocês perguntam: ‘De que maneira contaminamos os sacrifícios?’.[b] “Vocês os contaminam dizendo que a mesa do Senhor não merece respeito. 8 Acaso não é errado sacrificarem animais cegos? Não é errado oferecerem animais aleijados e doentes? Apresentem ofertas como essas a seu governador e vejam se ele ficará satisfeito e se agradará de vocês!”, diz o Senhor dos Exércitos.
9 “Vão em frente, supliquem a Deus para que tenha compaixão de vocês. Mas por que ele atenderia, uma vez que apresentam esse tipo de oferta?”, diz o Senhor dos Exércitos.
10 “Quem dera um de vocês fechasse as portas do templo para que não se acendesse em vão o fogo do meu altar! Não me agrado de vocês”, diz o Senhor dos Exércitos, “e não aceitarei suas ofertas. 11 Contudo, meu nome é honrado[c] de manhã até a noite por pessoas de outras nações. Em todo o mundo oferecem[d] incenso e sacrifícios puros em minha honra, pois meu nome é grande entre as nações”, diz o Senhor dos Exércitos.
12 “Mas vocês, com suas ações, desonram meu nome. Ao trazer alimentos desprezíveis, declaram que não há nada de errado em contaminar a mesa do Senhor. 13 Dizem: ‘É difícil demais servir ao Senhor!’ e desprezam minhas ordens”, diz o Senhor dos Exércitos. “Vocês trazem como ofertas animais roubados,[e] aleijados e doentes! Acaso devo aceitar de suas mãos esse tipo de oferta?”, diz o Senhor.
14 “Maldito seja o trapaceiro que promete um carneiro forte de seu rebanho, mas depois sacrifica ao Senhor um animal defeituoso. Pois eu sou o grande Rei”, diz o Senhor dos Exércitos, “e meu nome é temido entre as nações!”

Israel Doubts God’s Love
2 “I have loved(C) you,” says the Lord.
“But you ask,(D) ‘How have you loved us?’
“Was not Esau Jacob’s brother?” declares the Lord. “Yet I have loved Jacob,(E) 3 but Esau I have hated,(F) and I have turned his hill country into a wasteland(G) and left his inheritance to the desert jackals.(H)”
4 Edom(I) may say, “Though we have been crushed, we will rebuild(J) the ruins.”
But this is what the Lord Almighty says: “They may build, but I will demolish.(K) They will be called the Wicked Land, a people always under the wrath of the Lord.(L) 5 You will see it with your own eyes and say, ‘Great(M) is the Lord—even beyond the borders of Israel!’(N)
Breaking Covenant Through Blemished Sacrifices
6 “A son honors his father,(O) and a slave his master.(P) If I am a father, where is the honor due me? If I am a master, where is the respect(Q) due me?” says the Lord Almighty.(R)
“It is you priests who show contempt for my name.
“But you ask,(S) ‘How have we shown contempt for your name?’
7 “By offering defiled food(T) on my altar.
“But you ask,(U) ‘How have we defiled you?’
“By saying that the Lord’s table(V) is contemptible. 8 When you offer blind animals for sacrifice, is that not wrong? When you sacrifice lame or diseased animals,(W) is that not wrong? Try offering them to your governor! Would he be pleased(X) with you? Would he accept you?” says the Lord Almighty.(Y)
9 “Now plead with God to be gracious to us. With such offerings(Z) from your hands, will he accept(AA) you?”—says the Lord Almighty.
10 “Oh, that one of you would shut the temple doors,(AB) so that you would not light useless fires on my altar! I am not pleased(AC) with you,” says the Lord Almighty, “and I will accept(AD) no offering(AE) from your hands. 11 My name will be great(AF) among the nations,(AG) from where the sun rises to where it sets.(AH) In every place incense(AI) and pure offerings(AJ) will be brought to me, because my name will be great among the nations,” says the Lord Almighty.
12 “But you profane it by saying, ‘The Lord’s table(AK) is defiled,’ and, ‘Its food(AL) is contemptible.’ 13 And you say, ‘What a burden!’(AM) and you sniff at it contemptuously,(AN)” says the Lord Almighty.
“When you bring injured, lame or diseased animals and offer them as sacrifices,(AO) should I accept them from your hands?”(AP) says the Lord. 14 “Cursed is the cheat who has an acceptable male in his flock and vows to give it, but then sacrifices a blemished animal(AQ) to the Lord. For I am a great king,(AR)” says the Lord Almighty,(AS) “and my name is to be feared(AT) among the nations.(AU)

Israel Doubts God’s Love
2 “Israel, I have loved you,” says the Lord.
“But you ask, ‘How have you loved us?’
“Wasn’t Esau Jacob’s brother?” says the Lord. “But I chose Jacob 3 instead of Esau. I have turned Esau’s hill country into a dry and empty land. I left that land of Edom to the wild dogs in the desert.”
4 Edom might say, “We have been crushed. But we’ll rebuild our cities.”
The Lord who rules over all says, “They might rebuild their cities. But I will destroy them. They will be called the Evil Land. My anger will always remain on them. 5 You will see it with your own eyes. You will say, ‘The Lord is great! He rules even beyond the borders of Israel!’
Give Your Best to the Lord
6 “A son honors his father. A slave honors his master. If I am a father, where is the honor I should have? If I am a master, where is the respect you should give me?” says the Lord who rules over all.
“You priests look down on me.
“But you ask, ‘How have we looked down on you?’
7 “You sacrifice ‘unclean’ food on my altar.
“But you ask, ‘How have we made you “unclean”?’
“You do it by looking down on my altar. 8 You sacrifice blind animals to me. Isn’t that wrong? You sacrifice disabled or sick animals. Isn’t that wrong? Try offering them to your governor! Would he be pleased with you? Would he accept you?” says the Lord who rules over all.
9 “Now plead with God to be gracious to us! But as long as you give offerings like those, how can he accept you?” says the Lord.
10 “You might as well shut the temple doors! Then you would not light useless fires on my altar. I am not pleased with you,” says the Lord. “I will not accept any of the offerings you bring. 11 My name will be great among the nations. They will worship me from where the sun rises in the east to where it sets in the west. In every place, incense and pure offerings will be brought to me. That’s because my name will be great among the nations,” says the Lord.
12 “But you treat my name as if it were not holy. You say the Lord’s altar is ‘unclean.’ And you look down on its food. 13 You say, ‘What a heavy load our work is!’ And you turn up your nose. You act as if you hate working for me,” says the Lord who rules over all.
“You bring animals that have been hurt. Or you bring disabled or sick animals. Then you dare to offer them to me as sacrifices! Should I accept them from you?” says the Lord. 14 “Suppose you have a male sheep or goat that does not have any flaws. And you promise to offer it to me. But then you sacrifice an animal that has flaws. When you do that, you cheat me. And anyone who cheats me is under my curse. After all, I am a great king,” says the Lord who rules over all. “The other nations have respect for my name. So why don’t you respect it?
