Förbundets ängel
3 Se, jag skall sända min budbärare
och han skall bereda vägen för mig.
Och den Herre som ni söker
skall plötsligt komma till sitt tempel,
förbundets ängel som ni längtar efter.
Se, han kommer,
säger Herren Sebaot.
2 Men vem kan uthärda den dag då han kommer,
och vem kan bestå när han uppenbarar sig?
Ty han är som en guldsmeds eld
och som en tvättares såpa.
3 Likt en guldsmed skall han sätta sig ner och rena silvret.
Han skall rena Levi söner,
luttra dem som guld och silver,
så att de kan bära fram åt Herren
en offergåva i rättfärdighet.
4 Då skall offergåvorna från Juda och Jerusalem behaga Herren
som i forna dagar och gångna år.
5 Jag skall komma till er och hålla dom.
Jag skall snabbt träda upp som vittne
mot trollkarlar och äktenskapsbrytare,
mot dem som svär falskt,
mot dem som undanhåller arbetaren hans lön
och förtrycker änkan och den faderlöse,
mot dem som vränger rätten för främlingen
och inte fruktar mig,
säger Herren Sebaot.
Israel inser inte sin synd
6 Jag, Herren, har inte förändrat mig,
och ni, Jakobs barn, har inte utplånats.
7 Alltsedan era fäders dagar har ni vikit av
från mina stadgar och inte hållit dem.
Vänd om till mig
så skall jag vända om till er,
säger Herren Sebaot.
Men ni frågar: "Varför skall vi vända om?"
8 Får en människa stjäla från Gud?
Ändå stjäl ni från mig.
Ni säger: "Vad har vi stulit från dig?"
Tionde och offergåvor.
9 Förbannelse har drabbat er,
ty ni och hela folket stjäl ifrån mig.
10 För in allt tionde i förrådshuset,
så att det finns mat i mitt hus.
Pröva mig nu i detta,
säger Herren Sebaot,
om jag inte kommer att öppna för er himlens fönster
och låta välsignelse strömma ut över er i rikt mått.
11 Och för er skull skall jag näpsa gräshopporna[a]
så att de inte fördärvar frukten på marken.
Inte heller skall vinstocken på fältet bli utan frukt,
säger Herren Sebaot.
12 Och alla folk skall prisa er lyckliga,
ty ni skall vara ett ljuvligt land,
säger Herren Sebaot.
13 Ni har talat hårda ord mot mig,
säger Herren.
Men ni säger: "Vad har vi talat mot dig?"
14 Ni har sagt: "Det är meningslöst att tjäna Gud.
Vad vinner vi på att hålla hans bud
och gå sörjande inför Herren Sebaot?"
15 Nu prisar vi de högmodiga lyckliga.
De som handlar ogudaktigt uppmuntras,
de sätter Gud på prov och slipper ändå undan.
En minnesbok
16 Men då talade de som fruktar Herren med varandra,
och Herren gav akt och lyssnade.
En minnesbok blev skriven inför honom
för dem som fruktar Herren
och ärar hans namn.
17 De skall vara mina, säger Herren Sebaot,
min egendom på den dag då jag utför mitt verk.
Jag skall visa medömkan med dem
så som en man visar medömkan med sin son som tjänar honom.
18 Då skall ni åter se skillnaden
mellan den rättfärdige och den ogudaktige,
mellan den som tjänar Gud och den som inte tjänar honom.

3 «Yo estoy por enviar a mi mensajero para que prepare el camino delante de mí. De pronto vendrá a su Templo el Señor a quien ustedes buscan; vendrá el mensajero del pacto, a quien ustedes desean» —dice el Señor de los Ejércitos.
2 Pero ¿quién podrá soportar el día de su venida? ¿Quién podrá mantenerse en pie cuando él aparezca? Porque será como fuego de fundidor o jabón de lavandero. 3 Se sentará como fundidor y purificador de plata; purificará a los levitas y los refinará como se refinan el oro y la plata. Entonces traerán al Señor ofrendas conforme a la justicia, 4 y las ofrendas de Judá y Jerusalén serán aceptables al Señor, como en tiempos antiguos, como en años pasados.
5 «De modo que me acercaré a ustedes para juicio. Estaré presto a testificar contra los hechiceros, los adúlteros y los perjuros, contra los que explotan a sus jornaleros; contra los que oprimen a las viudas, a los huérfanos y niegan el derecho del extranjero, sin mostrarme ningún temor —dice el Señor de los Ejércitos—.
Fidelidad en las ofrendas
6 »Yo, el Señor, no cambio. Por eso ustedes, descendientes de Jacob, no han sido exterminados. 7 Desde la época de sus antepasados se han apartado de mis estatutos y no los han guardado. Vuélvanse a mí y yo me volveré a ustedes —dice el Señor de los Ejércitos—.
»Pero ustedes preguntan: “¿En qué sentido tenemos que volvernos?”.
8 »¿Acaso roba el ser humano a Dios? ¡Ustedes me están robando!
»Y todavía preguntan: “¿En qué te robamos?”.
»En los diezmos y en las ofrendas. 9 Ustedes —la nación entera—, están bajo gran maldición, pues es a mí a quien están robando.
10 »Traigan íntegro el diezmo a la tesorería del Templo; así habrá alimento en mi casa. Pruébenme en esto —dice el Señor de los Ejércitos—, y vean si no abro las compuertas del cielo y derramo sobre ustedes bendición hasta que sobreabunde. 11 Reprenderé al devorador para que no arruine sus cultivos y las vides en los campos no pierdan su fruto —dice el Señor de los Ejércitos—. 12 Entonces todas las naciones los llamarán dichosos, porque ustedes tendrán una tierra maravillosa —dice el Señor de los Ejércitos—.
Insolencia de Judá
13 »Ustedes profieren insolencias contra mí —dice el Señor—.
»Y encima preguntan: “¿Qué hemos dicho contra ti?”.
14 »Ustedes han dicho: “Servir a Dios no vale la pena. ¿Qué ganamos con cumplir sus órdenes y vestirnos de luto delante del Señor de los Ejércitos? 15 Por eso llamamos dichosos a los soberbios, pues prosperan los que hacen lo malo e incluso cuando desafían a Dios escapan ilesos”».
16 Los que temían al Señor hablaron entre sí, entonces él los escuchó y les prestó atención. Entonces se escribió en su presencia un libro de memorias de aquellos que temen al Señor y honran su nombre. 17 «El día que yo actúe ellos serán mi propiedad exclusiva —dice el Señor de los Ejércitos—. Tendré compasión de ellos, como se compadece un hombre del hijo que le sirve. 18 Y ustedes volverán a distinguir entre el justo y el malvado, entre el que sirve a Dios y el que no le sirve.

3 “I will send my messenger,(A) who will prepare the way before me.(B) Then suddenly the Lord(C) you are seeking will come to his temple; the messenger of the covenant,(D) whom you desire,(E) will come,” says the Lord Almighty.
2 But who can endure(F) the day of his coming?(G) Who can stand(H) when he appears? For he will be like a refiner’s fire(I) or a launderer’s soap.(J) 3 He will sit as a refiner and purifier of silver;(K) he will purify(L) the Levites and refine them like gold and silver.(M) Then the Lord will have men who will bring offerings in righteousness,(N) 4 and the offerings(O) of Judah and Jerusalem will be acceptable to the Lord, as in days gone by, as in former years.(P)
5 “So I will come to put you on trial. I will be quick to testify against sorcerers,(Q) adulterers(R) and perjurers,(S) against those who defraud laborers of their wages,(T) who oppress the widows(U) and the fatherless, and deprive the foreigners(V) among you of justice, but do not fear(W) me,” says the Lord Almighty.
Breaking Covenant by Withholding Tithes
6 “I the Lord do not change.(X) So you, the descendants of Jacob, are not destroyed.(Y) 7 Ever since the time of your ancestors you have turned away(Z) from my decrees and have not kept them. Return(AA) to me, and I will return to you,”(AB) says the Lord Almighty.
“But you ask,(AC) ‘How are we to return?’
8 “Will a mere mortal rob(AD) God? Yet you rob me.
“But you ask, ‘How are we robbing you?’
“In tithes(AE) and offerings. 9 You are under a curse(AF)—your whole nation—because you are robbing me. 10 Bring the whole tithe(AG) into the storehouse,(AH) that there may be food in my house. Test me in this,” says the Lord Almighty, “and see if I will not throw open the floodgates(AI) of heaven and pour out(AJ) so much blessing(AK) that there will not be room enough to store it.(AL) 11 I will prevent pests from devouring(AM) your crops, and the vines in your fields will not drop their fruit before it is ripe,(AN)” says the Lord Almighty. 12 “Then all the nations will call you blessed,(AO) for yours will be a delightful land,”(AP) says the Lord Almighty.(AQ)
Israel Speaks Arrogantly Against God
13 “You have spoken arrogantly(AR) against me,” says the Lord.
“Yet you ask,(AS) ‘What have we said against you?’
14 “You have said, ‘It is futile(AT) to serve(AU) God. What do we gain by carrying out his requirements(AV) and going about like mourners(AW) before the Lord Almighty? 15 But now we call the arrogant(AX) blessed. Certainly evildoers(AY) prosper,(AZ) and even when they put God to the test, they get away with it.’”
The Faithful Remnant
16 Then those who feared the Lord talked with each other, and the Lord listened and heard.(BA) A scroll(BB) of remembrance was written in his presence concerning those who feared(BC) the Lord and honored his name.
17 “On the day when I act,” says the Lord Almighty, “they will be my(BD) treasured possession.(BE) I will spare(BF) them, just as a father has compassion and spares his son(BG) who serves him. 18 And you will again see the distinction between the righteous(BH) and the wicked, between those who serve God and those who do not.(BI)
