1 A prophecy:(A) The word(B) of the Lord to Israel through Malachi.[a]
Israel Doubts God’s Love
2 “I have loved(C) you,” says the Lord.
“But you ask,(D) ‘How have you loved us?’
“Was not Esau Jacob’s brother?” declares the Lord. “Yet I have loved Jacob,(E) 3 but Esau I have hated,(F) and I have turned his hill country into a wasteland(G) and left his inheritance to the desert jackals.(H)”
4 Edom(I) may say, “Though we have been crushed, we will rebuild(J) the ruins.”
But this is what the Lord Almighty says: “They may build, but I will demolish.(K) They will be called the Wicked Land, a people always under the wrath of the Lord.(L) 5 You will see it with your own eyes and say, ‘Great(M) is the Lord—even beyond the borders of Israel!’(N)
Breaking Covenant Through Blemished Sacrifices
6 “A son honors his father,(O) and a slave his master.(P) If I am a father, where is the honor due me? If I am a master, where is the respect(Q) due me?” says the Lord Almighty.(R)
“It is you priests who show contempt for my name.
“But you ask,(S) ‘How have we shown contempt for your name?’
7 “By offering defiled food(T) on my altar.
“But you ask,(U) ‘How have we defiled you?’
“By saying that the Lord’s table(V) is contemptible. 8 When you offer blind animals for sacrifice, is that not wrong? When you sacrifice lame or diseased animals,(W) is that not wrong? Try offering them to your governor! Would he be pleased(X) with you? Would he accept you?” says the Lord Almighty.(Y)
9 “Now plead with God to be gracious to us. With such offerings(Z) from your hands, will he accept(AA) you?”—says the Lord Almighty.
10 “Oh, that one of you would shut the temple doors,(AB) so that you would not light useless fires on my altar! I am not pleased(AC) with you,” says the Lord Almighty, “and I will accept(AD) no offering(AE) from your hands. 11 My name will be great(AF) among the nations,(AG) from where the sun rises to where it sets.(AH) In every place incense(AI) and pure offerings(AJ) will be brought to me, because my name will be great among the nations,” says the Lord Almighty.
12 “But you profane it by saying, ‘The Lord’s table(AK) is defiled,’ and, ‘Its food(AL) is contemptible.’ 13 And you say, ‘What a burden!’(AM) and you sniff at it contemptuously,(AN)” says the Lord Almighty.
“When you bring injured, lame or diseased animals and offer them as sacrifices,(AO) should I accept them from your hands?”(AP) says the Lord. 14 “Cursed is the cheat who has an acceptable male in his flock and vows to give it, but then sacrifices a blemished animal(AQ) to the Lord. For I am a great king,(AR)” says the Lord Almighty,(AS) “and my name is to be feared(AT) among the nations.(AU)

Şi voi ziceţi: ‘Cu ce ne-ai iubit?’ Nu este Esau frate cu Iacov? zice Domnul; totuşi am iubit pe Iacov(B) 3 şi am urât pe Esau, i-am prefăcut munţii(C) într-o pustietate şi moştenirea lui am dat-o şacalilor din pustie. 4 Iar dacă ar zice Edomul: ‘Suntem nimiciţi, dar vom ridica iarăşi dărâmăturile!’ aşa vorbeşte Domnul oştirilor: Să zidească ei, căci Eu voi surpa, şi se vor numi: ‘Ţara răutăţii’, şi ‘Poporul pe care S-a mâniat Domnul pentru totdeauna’! 5 Veţi vedea cu ochii voştri lucrul acesta şi veţi zice: ‘Mare(D) este Domnul dincolo de hotarele lui Israel!’ 6 Un fiu cinsteşte(E) pe tatăl său şi o slugă, pe stăpânul său. Dacă sunt Tată(F), unde este cinstea care Mi se cuvine? Dacă sunt Stăpân, unde este teama de Mine? zice Domnul oştirilor către voi, preoţilor, care nesocotiţi Numele Meu şi care ziceţi(G): ‘Cu ce am nesocotit noi Numele Tău?’ 7 Prin faptul că aduceţi pe altarul Meu bucate(H) necurate! Şi dacă ziceţi: ‘Cu ce Te-am spurcat?’ Prin faptul că aţi zis: ‘Masa Domnului este de(I) dispreţuit!’ 8 Când aduceţi(J) ca jertfă o vită oarbă, nu este rău lucrul acesta? Când aduceţi una şchioapă sau beteagă, nu este rău lucrul acesta oare? Ia adu-o dregătorului tău! Te va primi el bine pentru ea, va ţine el seama(K) de ea? zice Domnul oştirilor. 9 ‘Şi acum, vă rog, rugaţi-vă lui Dumnezeu să aibă milă de noi!’ Vă va primi El cu bunăvoinţă când mâinile voastre fac(L) astfel de lucruri? zice Domnul oştirilor. 10 Cine din voi va închide porţile ca să n-aprindeţi(M) degeaba focul pe altarul Meu? N-am nicio plăcere de voi, zice Domnul oştirilor, şi darurile de mâncare(N) din mâna voastră nu-Mi sunt plăcute! 11 Căci de la răsăritul(O) soarelui până la asfinţit, Numele Meu este mare(P) între neamuri şi pretutindeni(Q) se arde tămâie(R) în cinstea Numelui Meu şi se aduc daruri de mâncare curate, căci mare(S) este Numele Meu între neamuri, zice Domnul oştirilor. 12 Dar voi îl pângăriţi prin faptul că ziceţi: ‘Masa Domnului(T) este spurcată şi ce aduce ea este o mâncare de dispreţuit!’ 13 Voi ziceţi: ‘Ce mai osteneală!’ şi o dispreţuiţi, zice Domnul oştirilor, şi aduceţi ce este furat, şchiop sau beteag – iată darurile de mâncare pe care le aduceţi! Pot Eu(U) să le primesc din mâinile voastre? zice Domnul. 14 Nu! Blestemat(V) să fie înşelătorul care are în turma lui o vită de parte bărbătească, şi totuşi juruieşte şi jertfeşte Domnului o vită beteagă! Căci Eu sunt(W) un Împărat mare, zice Domnul oştirilor, şi Numele Meu este înfricoşat printre neamuri.

2 I have loved you, saith the Lord. Yet ye say, Wherein hast thou loved us? Was not Esau Jacob's brother? saith the Lord: yet I loved Jacob,
3 And I hated Esau, and laid his mountains and his heritage waste for the dragons of the wilderness.
4 Whereas Edom saith, We are impoverished, but we will return and build the desolate places; thus saith the Lord of hosts, They shall build, but I will throw down; and they shall call them, The border of wickedness, and, The people against whom the Lord hath indignation for ever.
5 And your eyes shall see, and ye shall say, The Lord will be magnified from the border of Israel.
6 A son honoureth his father, and a servant his master: if then I be a father, where is mine honour? and if I be a master, where is my fear? saith the Lord of hosts unto you, O priests, that despise my name. And ye say, Wherein have we despised thy name?
7 Ye offer polluted bread upon mine altar; and ye say, Wherein have we polluted thee? In that ye say, The table of the Lord is contemptible.
8 And if ye offer the blind for sacrifice, is it not evil? and if ye offer the lame and sick, is it not evil? offer it now unto thy governor; will he be pleased with thee, or accept thy person? saith the Lord of hosts.
9 And now, I pray you, beseech God that he will be gracious unto us: this hath been by your means: will he regard your persons? saith the Lord of hosts.
10 Who is there even among you that would shut the doors for nought? neither do ye kindle fire on mine altar for nought. I have no pleasure in you, saith the Lord of hosts, neither will I accept an offering at your hand.
11 For from the rising of the sun even unto the going down of the same my name shall be great among the Gentiles; and in every place incense shall be offered unto my name, and a pure offering: for my name shall be great among the heathen, saith the Lord of hosts.
12 But ye have profaned it, in that ye say, The table of the Lord is polluted; and the fruit thereof, even his meat, is contemptible.
13 Ye said also, Behold, what a weariness is it! and ye have snuffed at it, saith the Lord of hosts; and ye brought that which was torn, and the lame, and the sick; thus ye brought an offering: should I accept this of your hand? saith the Lord.
14 But cursed be the deceiver, which hath in his flock a male, and voweth, and sacrificeth unto the Lord a corrupt thing: for I am a great King, saith the Lord of hosts, and my name is dreadful among the heathen.

The Lord's Love for Israel
2 (A)“I have loved you,” says the Lord. (B)But you say, “How have you loved us?” “Is not Esau (C)Jacob's brother?” declares the Lord. “Yet (D)I have loved Jacob 3 but Esau I have hated. (E)I have laid waste his hill country and left his heritage to jackals of the desert.” 4 If Edom says, “We are shattered but we will rebuild the ruins,” the Lord of hosts says, “They may build, but I will tear down, and they will be called ‘the wicked country,’ and ‘the people with whom the Lord is angry forever.’” 5 (F)Your own eyes shall see this, and you shall say, “Great is the Lord beyond the border of Israel!”
The Priests' Polluted Offerings
6 (G)“A son honors his father, and a servant his master. If then I am (H)a father, where is my honor? And if I am (I)a master, where is my fear? says the Lord of hosts to you, O priests, who despise my name. (J)But you say, ‘How have we despised your name?’ 7 (K)By offering polluted food upon my altar. (L)But you say, ‘How have we polluted you?’ By saying that (M)the Lord's table may be despised. 8 (N)When you offer blind animals in sacrifice, is that not evil? And when you offer those that are lame or sick, is that not evil? Present that to your governor; will he accept you or show you favor? says the Lord of hosts. 9 And now (O)entreat the favor of God, that he may be gracious to us. With such a gift from your hand, (P)will he show favor to any of you? says the Lord of hosts. 10 (Q)Oh that there were one among you who would shut the doors, that you might not kindle fire on my altar in vain! I have no pleasure in you, says the Lord of hosts, (R)and I will not accept an offering from your hand. 11 For from the rising of the sun to its setting my name (S)will be[b] great among the nations, and in every place incense will be offered to my name, and a pure offering. For my name (T)will be great among the nations, says the Lord of hosts. 12 But you profane it when you say that (U)the Lord's table is polluted, and its fruit, that is, its food, may be despised. 13 But you say, (V)‘What a weariness this is,’ and you snort at it, says the Lord of hosts. Love of Jacob
2 I have loved you, says the Lord;
but you say, “How have you loved us?”
Wasn’t Esau Jacob’s brother?
says the Lord.
I loved Jacob, 3 but I rejected Esau.
I turned Esau’s mountains into desolation,
his inheritance into a wilderness for jackals.
4 Edom may say, “We are beaten down, but we will rebuild the ruins”;
but the Lord of heavenly forces proclaims:
They may build, but I will tear them down.
They will call themselves a wicked territory,
the people against whom the Lord rages forever.
5 Your eyes will see it and you will say,
“May the Lord be great beyond the borders of Israel.”
Honoring the Lord
6 A son honors a father,
and a servant honors his master.
But if I’m a father, where is my honor?
Or if I’m a master, where is my respect?
says the Lord of heavenly forces
to you priests who despise my name.
So you say, “How have we despised your name?”
7 By approaching my altar with polluted food.
But you say, “How have we polluted it[b]?”
When you say, “The table of the Lord can be despised.”
8 If you bring a blind animal to sacrifice, isn’t that evil?
If you bring a lame or sick one, isn’t that evil?
Would you bring it to your governor?
Would he be pleased with it or accept you?
says the Lord of heavenly forces.
9 So now ask God to be gracious to us.
After what you have done, will he accept you?
says the Lord of heavenly forces.
10 Who among you will shut the doors of the temple[c]
so that you don’t burn something on my altar in vain?
I take no delight in you,
says the Lord of heavenly forces.
I won’t accept a grain offering from your hand.
11 Nevertheless, from sunrise to sunset,
my name will be great among the nations.
Incense and a pure grain offering will be offered everywhere in my name,
because my name is great among the nations,
says the Lord of heavenly forces.
12 But you make my name impure when you say,
“The table of the Lord is polluted.
Its fruit, its food, is despised.”
13 But you say, “How tedious!”
and you groan about it,
says the Lord of heavenly forces.
You permit what is stolen, lame, or sick to be brought for a sacrifice,[d]
and you bring the grain offering.
Should I accept such from your hands?
says the Lord.
14 I will curse the cheater who has a healthy[e] male in his flock,
but who promises and sacrifices to the Lord that which is corrupt.
I am truly a great king,
says the Lord of heavenly forces,
and my name is feared among the nations.
