Look! The day is coming, burning like a blast furnace.[a] All the arrogant and every evildoer will be stubble. The day that is coming will set them on fire, says the Lord of Armies, a day that will not leave behind a root or branch for them. But for you who fear my name, the sun of righteousness[b] will rise, and there will be healing in its wings. You will go out and jump around like calves from the stall. You will trample the wicked. They will surely be ashes under the soles of your feet on the day when I take action, says the Lord of Armies.

Remember the law of my servant Moses, which I commanded to him at Horeb to serve as statutes and judgments over all Israel.

Look! I am going to send Elijah the prophet to you before the great and fearful day of the Lord comes![c] He will turn the hearts of fathers to their children and the hearts of children to their fathers. Otherwise, I will come and strike the land with complete destruction.

Footnotes

  1. Malachi 4:1 English verses 4:1-6 are verses 3:19-24 in Hebrew.
  2. Malachi 4:2 Or the Sun of Righteousness will rise, and there will be healing in his wings. The question here is whether the words sun of righteousness are a title for the Messiah or a picture of the blessings of the Messianic era.
  3. Malachi 4:5 This is fulfilled by John the Baptist (Matthew 11:7-14 and Luke 1:17).

[a] “For look! The day is about to come, burning like an oven, and all the arrogant and every evildoer[b] will be stubble. The coming day will consume[c] them,” says Yahweh of hosts. “It will not leave behind for them root or branch. But for you who revere[d] my name, the sun of righteousness will rise, with healing in its wings, and you will go out and leap like fattened calves.[e] You will trample down the wicked, for they will be ashes under the soles of your feet on the day that I am going to act,” says Yahweh of hosts.

“Remember the instruction[f] of my servant Moses, which I commanded him at Horeb to all Israel, the rules and regulations. Look! I am going to send to you Elijah the prophet before the coming of the great and awesome day of Yahweh! And he will bring back[g] the hearts of the fathers to the sons, and the hearts of the sons to their fathers, so that I will not come and strike the land with a ban.”
