^5 (A)“But before the great and terrible day of the Lord comes, I will send you the prophet Elijah.

^10 (A)Then the disciples asked Jesus, “Why do the teachers of the Law say that Elijah has to come first?”

^11 (B)“Elijah is indeed coming first,” answered Jesus, “and he will get everything ready. ^12 (C)But I tell you that Elijah has already come and people did not recognize him, but treated him just as they pleased. In the same way they will also mistreat the Son of Man.”

¹³ Then the disciples understood that he was talking to them about John the Baptist.

^11 (A)And they asked Jesus, “Why do the teachers of the Law say that Elijah has to come first?”

^12 (B)His answer was, “Elijah is indeed coming first in order to get everything ready. Yet why do the Scriptures say that the Son of Man will suffer much and be rejected? ¹³ I tell you, however, that Elijah has already come and that people treated him just as they pleased, as the Scriptures say about him.”
