Các Nhà Thông Thái Tìm Chúa
2 Sau khi Ðức Chúa Jesus giáng sinh tại Bết-lê-hem, xứ Giu-đê, trong thời Vua Hê-rốt trị vì, này, có mấy nhà thông thái từ phương đông đến Giê-ru-sa-lem 2 và hỏi, “Vua dân Do-thái mới sinh tại đâu? Vì chúng tôi đã thấy ngôi sao Ngài bên phương đông, nên đến để bái kiến[a] Ngài.”
3 Nghe tin ấy Vua Hê-rốt bối rối, và cả Thành Giê-ru-sa-lem đều xôn xao. 4 Ông triệu tập tất cả các trưởng tế và các thầy dạy giáo luật trong dân lại và hỏi họ, “Ðấng Christ phải sinh ra tại đâu?”
5 Họ tâu, “Tại Bết-lê-hem, xứ Giu-đê, vì có đấng tiên tri đã viết như thế này,
6 ‘Còn ngươi, hỡi Bết-lê-hem của Giu-đa,
Ngươi không phải là thành nhỏ nhất trong các thành của Giu-đa đâu,
Vì từ ngươi sẽ ra một lãnh tụ,
Một Ðấng sẽ chăn dắt dân I-sơ-ra-ên của Ta.’”
7 Bấy giờ Vua Hê-rốt bí mật mời các nhà thông thái đến, để hỏi họ kỹ càng về thời điểm ngôi sao đã xuất hiện. 8 Ðoạn ông bảo họ đến Bết-lê-hem và dặn, “Các ngươi hãy đi và tìm cho kỹ về con trẻ đó. Khi tìm được, hãy báo cho ta biết, để ta cũng đến bái kiến người.”
9 Sau khi nghe vua phán, họ ra đi. Kìa, ngôi sao họ đã thấy bên phương đông đi trước họ cho đến chỗ có Hài Nhi thì dừng lại. 10 Khi thấy ngôi sao, họ rất đỗi vui mừng. 11 Vừa khi vào nhà, họ thấy Hài Nhi với Ma-ry mẹ Ngài, họ sấp mình xuống và thờ lạy Ngài. Ðoạn họ mở các hộp đựng bửu vật, lấy các lễ vật gồm vàng, nhũ hương, và mộc dược dâng lên Ngài. 12 Sau đó, vì được Ðức Chúa Trời báo mộng, bảo đừng trở lại gặp Hê-rốt, họ đi đường khác trở về xứ mình.
Chúa Tỵ Nạn Qua Ai-cập
13 Sau khi họ đi rồi, một thiên sứ của Chúa hiện đến với Giô-sép trong chiêm bao và truyền, “Hãy đứng dậy, đem Hài Nhi và mẹ Ngài lánh qua Ai-cập, và cứ ở đó cho đến khi ta bảo ngươi, vì Hê-rốt đang tìm giết Hài Nhi.”
14 Giô-sép liền thức dậy, ban đêm, đưa Hài Nhi và mẹ Ngài xuống Ai-cập, 15 rồi họ cứ ở đó cho đến khi Hê-rốt băng hà; điều đó làm ứng nghiệm lời Chúa đã phán qua đấng tiên tri rằng, “Ta đã gọi Con Ta ra khỏi Ai-cập.”
Hê-rốt Giết Các Trẻ Thơ
16 Khi Hê-rốt thấy ông đã bị các nhà thông thái lừa, ông rất giận. Ông ra lịnh cho các thuộc hạ giết tất cả các trẻ thơ trong Thành Bết-lê-hem và các vùng phụ cận, từ hai tuổi trở xuống, theo ngày tháng các nhà thông thái đã cho ông biết. 17 Thế là lời Tiên Tri Giê-rê-mi đã nói được ứng nghiệm,
18 “Người ta nghe tiếng ai oán ở Ra-ma,
Tiếng than khóc và rên rỉ rất thê lương,
Tiếng Ra-chên than khóc các con nàng,
Nàng từ chối không để ai an ủi,
Vì chúng không còn nữa.”
Chúa Từ Ai-cập Trở Về
19 Sau khi Hê-rốt chết, này, một thiên sứ của Chúa hiện ra với Giô-sép trong chiêm bao tại Ai-cập và truyền, 20 “Hãy đứng dậy, đem Ấu Nhi và mẹ Ngài trở về đất I-sơ-ra-ên, vì những kẻ tìm giết Ấu Nhi đã chết.”
21 Vậy Giô-sép đứng dậy, đưa Ấu Nhi và mẹ Ngài trở về đất I-sơ-ra-ên. 22 Nhưng khi Giô-sép nghe rằng A-chê-la-u đang trị vì ở Giu-đê, kế vị Hê-rốt cha ông, Giô-sép sợ và không muốn về đó. Nhờ được mách bảo trong chiêm bao, Giô-sép lánh về miền Ga-li-lê; 23 ông đến định cư tại một thành tên Na-xa-rét. Thế là ứng nghiệm lời các đấng tiên tri đã nói, “Ngài sẽ được gọi là người Na-xa-rét.”[b]

The Magi Visit the Messiah
2 After Jesus was born in Bethlehem in Judea,(A) during the time of King Herod,(B) Magi[a] from the east came to Jerusalem 2 and asked, “Where is the one who has been born king of the Jews?(C) We saw his star(D) when it rose and have come to worship him.”
3 When King Herod heard this he was disturbed, and all Jerusalem with him. 4 When he had called together all the people’s chief priests and teachers of the law, he asked them where the Messiah was to be born. 5 “In Bethlehem(E) in Judea,” they replied, “for this is what the prophet has written:
6 “‘But you, Bethlehem, in the land of Judah,
are by no means least among the rulers of Judah;
for out of you will come a ruler
who will shepherd my people Israel.’[b]”(F)
7 Then Herod called the Magi secretly and found out from them the exact time the star had appeared. 8 He sent them to Bethlehem and said, “Go and search carefully for the child. As soon as you find him, report to me, so that I too may go and worship him.”
9 After they had heard the king, they went on their way, and the star they had seen when it rose went ahead of them until it stopped over the place where the child was. 10 When they saw the star, they were overjoyed. 11 On coming to the house, they saw the child with his mother Mary, and they bowed down and worshiped him.(G) Then they opened their treasures and presented him with gifts(H) of gold, frankincense and myrrh. 12 And having been warned(I) in a dream(J) not to go back to Herod, they returned to their country by another route.
The Escape to Egypt
13 When they had gone, an angel(K) of the Lord appeared to Joseph in a dream.(L) “Get up,” he said, “take the child and his mother and escape to Egypt. Stay there until I tell you, for Herod is going to search for the child to kill him.”(M)
14 So he got up, took the child and his mother during the night and left for Egypt, 15 where he stayed until the death of Herod. And so was fulfilled(N) what the Lord had said through the prophet: “Out of Egypt I called my son.”[c](O)
16 When Herod realized that he had been outwitted by the Magi, he was furious, and he gave orders to kill all the boys in Bethlehem and its vicinity who were two years old and under, in accordance with the time he had learned from the Magi. 17 Then what was said through the prophet Jeremiah was fulfilled:(P)
18 “A voice is heard in Ramah,
weeping and great mourning,
Rachel(Q) weeping for her children
and refusing to be comforted,
because they are no more.”[d](R)
The Return to Nazareth
19 After Herod died, an angel(S) of the Lord appeared in a dream(T) to Joseph in Egypt 20 and said, “Get up, take the child and his mother and go to the land of Israel, for those who were trying to take the child’s life are dead.”(U)
21 So he got up, took the child and his mother and went to the land of Israel. 22 But when he heard that Archelaus was reigning in Judea in place of his father Herod, he was afraid to go there. Having been warned in a dream,(V) he withdrew to the district of Galilee,(W) 23 and he went and lived in a town called Nazareth.(X) So was fulfilled(Y) what was said through the prophets, that he would be called a Nazarene.(Z)

2 Now (A)after Jesus was born in (B)Bethlehem of Judea (C)in the days of Herod the king, behold, wise men[a] from (D)the east came to Jerusalem, 2 saying, “Where is he who has been born (E)king of the Jews? For we saw (F)his star when it rose[b] and have come to (G)worship him.” 3 When Herod the king heard this, he was troubled, and all Jerusalem with him; 4 and assembling all the chief priests and scribes of the people, he inquired of them where (H)the Christ was to be born. 5 They told him, “In Bethlehem of Judea, for so it is written by the prophet:
6 (I)“‘And you, O Bethlehem, in the land of Judah,
are by no means least among the rulers of Judah;
for from you shall come a ruler
who will (J)shepherd my people Israel.’”
7 Then Herod summoned the wise men secretly and ascertained from them what time the star had appeared. 8 And he sent them to Bethlehem, saying, “Go and search diligently for the child, and when you have found him, bring me word, that I too may come and worship him.” 9 After listening to the king, they went on their way. And behold, the star that they had seen when it rose went before them until it came to rest over the place where the child was. 10 When they saw the star, they rejoiced exceedingly with great joy. 11 And going into the house, they saw the child with Mary his mother, and they fell down and worshiped him. Then, opening their treasures, (K)they offered him gifts, (L)gold and (M)frankincense and (N)myrrh. 12 And (O)being warned (P)in a dream not to return to Herod, they departed to their own country by another way.
The Flight to Egypt
13 Now when they had departed, behold, (Q)an angel of the Lord appeared to Joseph in a dream and said, “Rise, take the child and his mother, and flee to Egypt, and remain there until I tell you, for Herod is about to search for the child, to destroy him.” 14 And he rose and took the child and his mother by night and departed to Egypt 15 and remained there until the death of Herod. (R)This was to fulfill what the Lord had spoken by the prophet, (S)“Out of Egypt I called my son.”
Herod Kills the Children
16 Then Herod, when he saw that he had been tricked by the wise men, became furious, and he sent and killed all the male children in Bethlehem and in all that region who were two years old or under, according to the time that he had ascertained from the wise men. 17 (T)Then was fulfilled what was spoken by the prophet Jeremiah:
18 (U)“A voice was heard in Ramah,
weeping and loud lamentation,
Rachel weeping for her children;
she refused to be comforted, because they (V)are no more.”
The Return to Nazareth
