16 Người Pha-ri-si và Sa-đu-sê đến xin Đức Giê-su cho họ xem một dấu lạ từ trời để thử Ngài.
2 Nhưng Ngài trả lời: “Khi chiều xuống các ông nói rằng: ‘Chiều ráng đỏ thì trời nắng.’[a] 3 Vào buổi sáng sớm, các ông nói: ‘Sáng ráng đỏ thì trời mưa.’[b] Các ông biết nhìn bầu trời để tiên đoán thời tiết, nhưng sao lại không biết phân biệt các dấu lạ của thời đại? 4 Thế hệ gian ác và bất trung này tìm kiếm một dấu lạ, nhưng sẽ không được dấu lạ nào ngoại trừ dấu lạ của Giô-na.” Thế rồi Ngài lìa họ mà đi.

5 Khi qua bên kia bờ hồ, các môn đệ quên đem bánh theo. 6 Đức Giê-su bảo: “Hãy cẩn thận, coi chừng men của người Pha-ri-si và Sa-đu-sê.”
7 Các môn đệ nói với nhau: “Tại chúng ta không đem bánh theo.”
8 Đức Giê-su biết thế và bảo: “Hỡi những kẻ ít đức tin! Sao lại nói với nhau rằng mình không đem theo bánh? 9 Các con chưa hiểu sao? Các con không nhớ năm cái bánh cho năm ngàn người ăn sao? Các con thu được bao nhiêu giỏ bánh thừa? 10 Hay bảy cái bánh cho bốn ngàn người ăn; các con thu được bao nhiêu giỏ bánh thừa? 11 Sao các con không hiểu rằng Ta không nói về bánh? Hãy coi chừng men của người Pha-ri-si và Sa-đu-sê.” 12 Lúc ấy các môn đệ mới hiểu rằng Ngài không bảo coi chừng về men làm bánh nhưng về sự dạy dỗ của người Pha-ri-si và Sa-đu-sê.
Phê-rơ Tuyên Xưng Đức Giê-su(C)
13 Khi Đức Giê-su vào địa phận Sê-sa-rê Phi-líp, Ngài hỏi các môn đệ: “Theo như người ta nói thì Con Người là ai?”
14 Các môn đệ thưa: “Một số người nói Thầy là Giăng Báp-tít, một số khác nói là Ê-li, một số khác nói là Giê-rê-mi hay một tiên tri nào đó.”
15 Ngài hỏi các môn đệ: “Còn chính các con thì cho rằng Ta là ai?”
16 Si-môn Phê-rơ thưa: “Thầy là Chúa Cứu Thế, Con Đức Chúa Trời hằng sống.”
17 Đức Giê-su phán: “Phước cho con, Si-môn con Giô-na! Vì không phải xác thịt và huyết bày tỏ cho con, mà chính Cha Ta ở trên trời.” 18 Còn Ta, Ta bảo con: “Con là Phê-rơ, Ta sẽ xây dựng Hội Thánh Ta trên vầng đá này và các cửa Âm Phủ sẽ không thắng nổi hội đó. 19 Ta sẽ cho con chìa khóa của Nước Thiên Đàng; bất cứ điều gì con buộc dưới đất, điều đó cũng sẽ được buộc ở trên trời; bất cứ điều gì con mở dưới đất, điều đó cũng sẽ được mở ở trên trời.” 20 Sau đó Ngài truyền lệnh cho các môn đệ không được tiết lộ Ngài là Chúa Cứu Thế.

21 Từ đó, Đức Giê-su bắt đầu bày tỏ cho các môn đệ biết rằng Ngài phải đi lên Giê-ru-sa-lem và phải chịu nhiều đau khổ bởi các trưởng lão, các thượng tế và các giáo sư Kinh Luật; Ngài phải bị giết, đến ngày thứ ba, Ngài sẽ sống lại.
22 Phê-rơ đem Ngài riêng ra và nói: “Chúa ơi, Đức Chúa Trời nào nỡ vậy! Thầy sẽ không bị như thế đâu!”
23 Nhưng Đức Giê-su quay lại bảo Phê-rơ: “Hỡi Sa-tan, hãy lui ra sau Ta. Con làm cớ vấp phạm cho Ta, vì con không nghĩ đến việc của Đức Chúa Trời, mà chỉ nghĩ đến việc của loài người.”
24 Kế đó, Đức Giê-su phán với các môn đệ: “Nếu người nào muốn theo Ta, hãy từ bỏ chính mình, vác thập tự giá mình và theo Ta.[c] 25 Vì hễ ai muốn cứu sự sống mình thì sẽ mất, nhưng ai vì Ta mà mất sự sống thì sẽ tìm lại được. 26 Vì người nào dù được cả thế giới mà mất linh hồn mình, người ấy được ích gì? Hay có ai lấy gì để đánh đổi được linh hồn mình không? 27 Vì Con Người sẽ trở lại trong vinh quang của Cha Ngài cùng với các thiên sứ. Bấy giờ, Ngài sẽ báo trả cho mỗi người tùy theo công việc họ làm. 28 Thật, Ta bảo các con, một vài người đang đứng tại đây sẽ không chết trước khi thấy Con Người đến trong nước Ngài.”

The Pharisees and Sadducees Demand Signs
16 (A)And the Pharisees and Sadducees came, and (B)to test him (C)they asked him to show them (D)a sign from heaven. 2 He answered them,[a] (E)“When it is evening, you say, ‘It will be fair weather, for the sky is red.’ 3 And in the morning, ‘It will be stormy today, for the sky is red and threatening.’ (F)You know how to interpret the appearance of the sky, but you cannot interpret (G)the signs of the times. 4 (H)An evil and adulterous generation seeks for a sign, but no sign will be given to it except the sign of Jonah.” So (I)he left them and departed.
The Leaven of the Pharisees and Sadducees
5 When the disciples reached the other side, they had forgotten to bring any bread. 6 Jesus said to them, “Watch and (J)beware of (K)the leaven of the Pharisees and Sadducees.” 7 And they began discussing it among themselves, saying, “We brought no bread.” 8 But (L)Jesus, aware of this, said, (M)“O you of little faith, why are you discussing among yourselves the fact that you have no bread? 9 (N)Do you not yet perceive? Do you not remember (O)the five loaves for the five thousand, and how many baskets you gathered? 10 Or (P)the seven loaves for the four thousand, and how many baskets you gathered? 11 How is it that you fail to understand that I did not speak about bread? (Q)Beware of the leaven of the Pharisees and Sadducees.” 12 (R)Then they understood that he did not tell them to beware of the leaven of bread, but of (S)the teaching of the Pharisees and Sadducees.
Peter Confesses Jesus as the Christ
13 (T)Now when Jesus came into the district of Caesarea Philippi, he asked his disciples, “Who do people say that the Son of Man is?” 14 And they said, “Some say (U)John the Baptist, others say (V)Elijah, and others Jeremiah or one of the prophets.” 15 He said to them, “But who do you say that I am?” 16 Simon Peter replied, (W)“You are (X)the Christ, (Y)the Son of (Z)the living God.” 17 And Jesus answered him, (AA)“Blessed are you, (AB)Simon Bar-Jonah! For (AC)flesh and blood has not revealed this to you, (AD)but my Father who is in heaven. 18 And I tell you, (AE)you are Peter, and (AF)on this rock[b] I will build my church, and (AG)the gates of (AH)hell[c] shall not prevail against it. 19 I will give you (AI)the keys of the kingdom of heaven, and (AJ)whatever you bind on earth shall be bound in heaven, and whatever you loose on earth shall be loosed[d] in heaven.” 20 (AK)Then he strictly charged the disciples to tell no one that he was the Christ.
Jesus Foretells His Death and Resurrection
21 (AL)From that time Jesus began to show his disciples that (AM)he must go to Jerusalem and (AN)suffer many things from the elders and chief priests and scribes, and be killed, and on (AO)the third day be raised. 22 And Peter took him aside and began to rebuke him, saying, “Far be it from you, Lord![e] This shall never happen to you.” 23 But he turned and said to Peter, (AP)“Get behind me, Satan! You are (AQ)a hindrance[f] to me. For you (AR)are not setting your mind on the things of God, but on the things of man.”
Take Up Your Cross and Follow Jesus
24 Then Jesus told his disciples, “If anyone would come after me, let him (AS)deny himself and (AT)take up his cross and follow me. 25 For (AU)whoever would save his life[g] will lose it, but whoever loses his life for my sake will find it. 26 For (AV)what will it profit a man if he gains the whole world and forfeits his soul? Or (AW)what shall a man give in return for his soul? 27 (AX)For the Son of Man is going to come with (AY)his angels in the glory of his Father, and (AZ)then he will repay each person according to what he has done. 28 Truly, I say to you, there are some standing here who will not (BA)taste death (BB)until they see the Son of Man (BC)coming in his kingdom.”

Religious Leaders Demand Signs
16 Now the Pharisees and Sadducees came up, and testing Yeshua, they asked Him to show them a sign from heaven. 2 But He replied to them, “When evening comes, you say, ‘Fair weather coming, for the sky is red,’ 3 and in the morning, ‘Stormy weather today, for the sky is red and gloomy.’ You know how to discern the appearance of the sky, but you cannot discern the signs of the times! 4 An evil and adulterous generation clamors for a sign, yet no sign will be given to it except the sign of Jonah.”[a] And leaving them behind, He went away.
5 Now when the disciples came to the other side of the sea, they had forgotten to take bread. 6 “Watch out,” Yeshua said to them, “and beware of the hametz of the Pharisees and Sadducees.”
7 And they began to discuss among themselves, saying, “We didn’t bring any bread.”
8 But knowing this, Yeshua said, “O you of little faith, why do you discuss among yourselves that you have no bread? 9 You still don’t get it? Don’t you remember the five loaves for the five thousand, and how many baskets of leftovers you gathered? 10 Or how about the seven loaves for the four thousand and all the baskets of leftovers you gathered? 11 How is it that you don’t understand that I wasn’t talking to you about bread? Now beware of the hametz of the Pharisees and Sadducees!” 12 Then they understood that He wasn’t talking about the hametz in the bread, but about the teaching of the Pharisees and Sadducees.
The Father Reveals His Son
13 When Yeshua came into the region of Caesarea Philippi, He asked His disciples, “Who do people say that the Son of Man is?”
14 They answered, “Some say John the Immerser, others say Elijah, and still others say Jeremiah or one of the other prophets.”
15 He said, “But who do you say I am?”
16 Simon Peter answered, “You are the Messiah, the Son of the living God.”
17 Yeshua said to him, “Blessed are you, Simon son of Jonah, because flesh and blood did not reveal this to you, but My Father who is in heaven! 18 And I also tell you that you are Peter, and upon this rock I will build My community[b]; and the gates of Sheol will not overpower it. 19 I will give you the keys of the kingdom of heaven. Whatever you forbid on earth will have been forbidden in heaven and what you permit on earth will have been permitted in heaven.” 20 Then He ordered the disciples not to tell anyone that He was the Messiah.
First Prediction: Death and Resurrection
21 From that time on, Yeshua began to show His disciples that He must go to Jerusalem and suffer many things from the elders and ruling kohanim and Torah scholars, and be killed, and be raised on the third day.
22 Peter took Him aside and began to rebuke Him, saying, “Never, Master! This must never happen to You!”
23 But He turned and said to Peter, “Get behind Me, satan! You are a stumbling block to Me, for you are not setting your mind on the things of God, but the things of men.”
24 Then Yeshua said to His disciples, “If anyone wants to follow after Me, he must deny himself, take up his cross, and follow Me. 25 For whoever wants to save his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life for My sake will find it. 26 For what will it profit a man if he gains the whole world but forfeits his soul? Or what will a man give in exchange for his soul? 27 For the Son of Man is about to come in the glory of His Father with His angels, and then ‘He will repay everyone according to his deeds.’ [c] 28 Amen, I tell you, there are some standing here who will not taste death until they see the Son of Man coming in His kingdom.”

28 Verily I say unto you, There be some standing here, which shall not taste of death, till they see the Son of man coming in his kingdom.
