8 Lần khác có một đám đông đi theo Chúa Giê-xu mà không có gì ăn nên Ngài gọi các môn đệ lại bảo, 2 “Ta tội nghiệp đoàn dân nầy, vì họ đã ở với ta hơn ba ngày nay mà không có gì ăn. 3 Nếu ta cho họ về trong khi bụng đói thế nầy chắc có người sẽ bị xỉu dọc đường, vì một số đã đến từ những nơi khá xa.”
4 Các môn đệ Ngài thưa, “Làm sao chúng ta có đủ bánh cho chừng nầy người ăn? Nơi đây cũng không gần thị trấn nào.”
5 Chúa Giê-xu hỏi, “Các con có bao nhiêu ổ bánh?”
Họ thưa, “Dạ có bảy ổ.”
6 Chúa Giê-xu bảo dân chúng ngồi xuống đất. Rồi Ngài cầm bảy ổ bánh, cảm tạ Thượng Đế và bẻ bánh ra. Ngài trao bánh cho các môn đệ để phân phát cho dân chúng. 7 Các môn đệ cũng có vài con cá nhỏ. Sau khi cảm tạ Thượng Đế về mấy con cá, Ngài bảo các môn đệ phát cho dân chúng luôn. 8 Mọi người ăn uống no nê. Các môn đệ gom được bảy giỏ đầy những miếng thừa. 9 Có khoảng bốn ngàn người đàn ông ăn lần đó. Sau khi ăn xong, Ngài cho họ về. 10 Rồi Ngài cùng các môn đệ xuống thuyền đi qua miền Đan-ma-nu-tha.
Các nhà cầm quyền muốn xem một phép lạ(B)
11 Các người Pha-ri-xi đến gặp Chúa Giê-xu và bắt đầu gạn hỏi Ngài. Vì chủ tâm gài bẫy Ngài, nên họ yêu cầu Chúa Giê-xu làm một phép lạ từ trời cho họ xem. 12 Chúa Giê-xu thở dài bảo họ, “Sao các ông muốn xem phép lạ? Ta bảo thật, các ông sẽ không nhận được dấu lạ nào cả.” 13 Rồi Ngài bỏ họ, xuống thuyền sang bờ hồ bên kia.
Thận trọng về những lời giáo huấn sai lạc(C)
14 Các môn đệ chỉ đem theo có một ổ bánh trong thuyền; đáng lẽ họ phải mang theo nhiều hơn. 15 Chúa Giê-xu bảo họ, “Các con phải thận trọng về men của người Pha-ri-xi và men của Hê-rốt.”
16 Các môn đệ thảo luận với nhau về ý nghĩa của lời Ngài nói. Họ bảo, “Thầy nói vậy là vì chúng ta quên mang bánh theo.”
17 Biết họ bàn như thế nên Chúa Giê-xu hỏi, “Sao các con nói tại vì không mang bánh theo? Các con cũng còn chưa thấy và chưa hiểu sao? Trí óc các con vẫn còn tối tăm sao? 18 Các con có mắt mà vẫn không thấy, có tai mà không nghe. Các con còn nhớ những lần 19 ta chia năm ổ bánh cho năm ngàn người sao? Các con thu lại được bao nhiêu giỏ bánh thừa?”
Họ thưa, “Dạ, mười hai giỏ.”
20 “Còn khi ta phát bảy ổ bánh cho bốn ngàn người, các con gom được bao nhiêu giỏ bánh thừa?”
Họ thưa, “Dạ, bảy giỏ.”
21 Chúa Giê-xu bảo họ rằng, “Đến bây giờ các con cũng chưa hiểu sao?”
Chúa Giê-xu chữa lành người mù
22 Chúa Giê-xu cùng các môn đệ đến thành Bết-sai-đa. Người ta mang tới cho Ngài một người mù và xin Ngài đặt tay trên anh. 23 Chúa Giê-xu cầm tay người mù, dắt ra khỏi làng. Sau khi nhổ nước miếng lên mắt và đặt tay trên anh, Ngài hỏi, “Bây giờ anh thấy được chưa?”
24 Anh ngước lên thưa, “Dạ, tôi thấy người ta nhưng họ đi giống như cây cối.”
25 Chúa Giê-xu lại đặt tay lên mắt anh. Anh mở mắt ra thì mắt được sáng, thấy rõ ràng tất cả. 26 Chúa Giê-xu bảo anh đi về nhà và dặn, “Đừng trở vào thành.”
Phia-rơ tuyên xưng Chúa Giê-xu là Đấng Cứu Thế(D)
27 Chúa Giê-xu cùng môn đệ đi đến các thành quanh vùng Xê-xa-rê Phi-líp. Đang đi đường, Ngài hỏi các môn đệ, “Dân chúng nói ta là ai?”
28 Các môn đệ thưa, “Có người nói thầy là Giăng Báp-tít. Người khác nói thầy là Ê-li, còn người khác nữa thì cho thầy là một trong các nhà tiên tri.”
29 Nhưng Chúa Giê-xu hỏi, “Còn các con nói ta là ai?”
Phia-rơ đáp, “Thầy là Đấng Cứu Thế.”
30 Chúa Giê-xu nghiêm cấm các môn đệ không được nói cho người nào biết Ngài là ai.
Chúa Giê-xu nói trước về cái chết của Ngài(E)
31 Rồi Chúa Giê-xu bắt đầu dạy họ rằng, “Con Người phải chịu khổ nhiều, còn bị các bô lão Do-thái, các giới trưởng tế cùng các giáo sư luật loại ra.” Ngài cũng cho biết thêm là Con Người sẽ bị giết, nhưng sau ba ngày sẽ sống lại từ trong kẻ chết. 32 Chúa Giê-xu nói rõ ràng cho các môn đệ biết những sự việc sẽ xảy ra. Phia-rơ liền mang Ngài riêng ra và trách Ngài. 33 Nhưng Chúa Giê-xu quay lại nhìn các môn đệ rồi quở Phia-rơ. Ngài bảo, “Nầy Sa-tăng [a], hãy đi khỏi mặt ta! Con không nghĩ đến việc Thượng Đế mà chỉ nghĩ đến những việc loài người thôi.”
34 Sau đó Chúa Giê-xu gọi quần chúng và các môn đệ lại, bảo rằng, “Ai muốn theo ta phải từ bỏ chính mình và vác thập tự giá mình mà theo ta. 35 Ai tìm cách giữ mạng sống mình, sẽ bị mất nó, nhưng ai chịu mất mạng mình vì ta và vì Tin Mừng thì sẽ giữ được mạng sống. 36 Nếu ai được cả thế giới mà mất linh hồn mình thì ích lợi gì? 37 Lấy gì mà đánh đổi linh hồn mình? 38 Ai xấu hổ về ta và lời dạy dỗ của ta giữa thế hệ dâm ô và tội lỗi nầy thì Con Người cũng sẽ xấu hổ về người ấy khi Ngài hiện đến trong vinh quang của Cha Ngài cùng với các thiên sứ thánh.”

Jesus Feeds More than Four Thousand People(A)
8 At that time, after a large crowd again had gathered together with nothing to eat, Jesus[a] called his disciples and told them, 2 “I have compassion for the crowd, because they’ve already been with me for three days and have nothing to eat. 3 If I send them away to their homes hungry, they’ll faint on the road. Some of them have come a long distance.”
4 His disciples answered him, “Where could anyone get enough bread to feed these people out here in the wilderness?”
5 He asked them, “How many loaves of bread do you have?”
“Seven,” they said.
6 So he ordered the crowd to sit down on the ground. Then he took the seven loaves and gave thanks. He broke them in pieces and kept giving them to his disciples to distribute. So they served them to the crowd. 7 They also had a few small fish. He blessed them and said that the fish[b] should also be distributed. 8 The people[c] ate and were filled. Then the disciples[d] picked up the leftover pieces—seven large baskets full. 9 Now about 4,000 men were there. Then he sent them on their way. 10 Immediately he got into a boat with his disciples and went to the region of Dalmanutha.[e]
Interpreting the Time(B)
11 The Pharisees arrived and began arguing with Jesus.[f] They tested him by demanding from him a sign from heaven. 12 He sighed deeply in his spirit and remarked, “Why do those living today[g] demand a sign? I tell all of you[h] with certainty, no sign will be given to this generation.” 13 Leaving them, he got into a boat again and crossed to the other side.
The Yeast of the Pharisees and Sadducees(C)
14 Now the disciples[i] had forgotten to take any bread along, but they had one loaf with them in the boat. 15 Jesus[j] had been warning them, “Watch out! Beware of the yeast of the Pharisees and the yeast of Herod!”[k]
16 So they were discussing with one another the fact that they didn’t have any bread. 17 Knowing this, Jesus[l] asked them, “Why are you discussing the fact that you don’t have any bread? Don’t you understand or perceive yet? Are your hearts hardened? 18 Do you have eyes, but fail to see? Do you have ears, but fail to hear?[m] Don’t you remember? 19 When I broke the five loaves for the 5,000, how many baskets did you fill with leftover pieces?”
They told him, “Twelve.”
20 “When I broke[n] the seven loaves[o] for the 4,000, how many large baskets did you fill with the leftover pieces?”
They told him, “Seven.”
21 Then he asked them, “Don’t you understand yet?”
Jesus Heals a Blind Man in Bethsaida
22 As they came to Bethsaida, some people[p] brought a blind man to Jesus[q] and begged him to touch him.[r] 23 Jesus[s] took the blind man by the hand and led him out of the village. He spit into his eyes, placed his hands on him, and asked him, “Do you see anything?”
24 The man[t] looked up and said, “I see people, but they look like trees walking around.” 25 Then Jesus[u] placed his hands on the man’s[v] eyes again, and he saw clearly. His sight was restored, and he saw everything perfectly, even from a distance.
26 Then Jesus[w] sent him home, saying, “Don’t go into the village or tell anyone in the village.”[x]
Peter Declares His Faith in Jesus(D)
27 Then Jesus and his disciples set out for the villages around Caesarea Philippi. On the way he was asking his disciples, “Who do people say I am?”
28 They answered him, “Some say[y] John the Baptist, others Elijah, and still others one of the prophets.”
29 Then he began to ask them, “But who do you say I am?”
Peter answered him, “You are the Messiah!”[z] 30 Jesus[aa] sternly ordered them not to tell anyone about him.
Jesus Predicts His Death and Resurrection(E)
31 Then he began to teach them that the Son of Man would have to suffer a great deal and be rejected by the elders, the high priests, and the scribes. Then he would be killed, but after three days he would rise again. 32 He was speaking about this matter quite openly.
Peter took him aside and began to rebuke him. 33 But turning and looking at his disciples, Jesus[ab] rebuked Peter, saying, “Get behind me, Satan, because you’re not thinking God’s thoughts, but human thoughts!”
34 Then Jesus[ac] called the crowd to himself along with his disciples and told them, “If anyone wants to follow me, he must deny himself, pick up his cross, and follow me continuously, 35 because whoever wants to save his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life for my sake and for the gospel will save it. 36 What profit will a person have if he gains the whole world and forfeits his life? 37 Indeed, what can a person give in exchange for his life? 38 If anyone is ashamed of me and my words in this adulterous and sinful generation, the Son of Man will be ashamed of him when he comes with the holy angels in his Father’s glory.”

8 In those days the multitude being very great, and having nothing to eat, Jesus called his disciples unto him, and saith unto them,
2 I have compassion on the multitude, because they have now been with me three days, and have nothing to eat:
3 And if I send them away fasting to their own houses, they will faint by the way: for divers of them came from far.
4 And his disciples answered him, From whence can a man satisfy these men with bread here in the wilderness?

12 And he sighed deeply in his spirit, and saith, Why doth this generation seek after a sign? verily I say unto you, There shall no sign be given unto this generation.
13 And he left them, and entering into the ship again departed to the other side.
14 Now the disciples had forgotten to take bread, neither had they in the ship with them more than one loaf.
15 And he charged them, saying, Take heed, beware of the leaven of the Pharisees, and of the leaven of Herod.
16 And they reasoned among themselves, saying, It is because we have no bread.
17 And when Jesus knew it, he saith unto them, Why reason ye, because ye have no bread? perceive ye not yet, neither understand? have ye your heart yet hardened?
18 Having eyes, see ye not? and having ears, hear ye not? and do ye not remember?
19 When I brake the five loaves among five thousand, how many baskets full of fragments took ye up? They say unto him, Twelve.
20 And when the seven among four thousand, how many baskets full of fragments took ye up? And they said, Seven.
21 And he said unto them, How is it that ye do not understand?
22 And he cometh to Bethsaida; and they bring a blind man unto him, and besought him to touch him.
23 And he took the blind man by the hand, and led him out of the town; and when he had spit on his eyes, and put his hands upon him, he asked him if he saw ought.
24 And he looked up, and said, I see men as trees, walking.
25 After that he put his hands again upon his eyes, and made him look up: and he was restored, and saw every man clearly.
26 And he sent him away to his house, saying, Neither go into the town, nor tell it to any in the town.
27 And Jesus went out, and his disciples, into the towns of Caesarea Philippi: and by the way he asked his disciples, saying unto them, Whom do men say that I am?
28 And they answered, John the Baptist; but some say, Elias; and others, One of the prophets.
29 And he saith unto them, But whom say ye that I am? And Peter answereth and saith unto him, Thou art the Christ.
30 And he charged them that they should tell no man of him.
31 And he began to teach them, that the Son of man must suffer many things, and be rejected of the elders, and of the chief priests, and scribes, and be killed, and after three days rise again.
32 And he spake that saying openly. And Peter took him, and began to rebuke him.
33 But when he had turned about and looked on his disciples, he rebuked Peter, saying, Get thee behind me, Satan: for thou savourest not the things that be of God, but the things that be of men.
34 And when he had called the people unto him with his disciples also, he said unto them, Whosoever will come after me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross, and follow me.
35 For whosoever will save his life shall lose it; but whosoever shall lose his life for my sake and the gospel's, the same shall save it.
36 For what shall it profit a man, if he shall gain the whole world, and lose his own soul?
37 Or what shall a man give in exchange for his soul?
38 Whosoever therefore shall be ashamed of me and of my words in this adulterous and sinful generation; of him also shall the Son of man be ashamed, when he cometh in the glory of his Father with the holy angels.
