Chúa Giê-xu về thăm quê nhà(A)
6 Chúa Giê-xu rời nơi ấy trở về thăm quê nhà, có các môn đệ cùng đi. 2 Đến ngày Sa-bát, Ngài vào hội đường dạy dỗ. Nhiều người nghe Ngài thì sững sờ hỏi nhau, “Ông ta học những điều nầy ở đâu? Ai cho ông ta sự khôn ngoan như thế? Ông ta lấy quyền ở đâu mà làm phép lạ? 3 Ông ta chẳng qua chỉ là thợ mộc, con của Ma-ri và anh của Gia-cơ, Giô-xép, Giu-đa và Xi-môn. Còn chị em ông ta vẫn sống ở giữa chúng ta đây mà.” Cho nên họ bực dọc về Ngài.
4 Chúa Giê-xu bảo họ, “Nhà tiên tri nào cũng được khắp nơi kính trọng, chỉ trừ quê quán và họ hàng mình.” 5 Cho nên Chúa Giê-xu không thể làm phép lạ ở đó được. Ngài chỉ đặt tay chữa lành một vài người bệnh thôi. 6 Ngài lấy làm ngạc nhiên vì nhiều người chẳng có lòng tin gì cả. Rồi Chúa Giê-xu vào các làng khác trong vùng ấy để giảng dạy.
Chúa Giê-xu gởi các sứ đồ đi truyền giáo(B)
7 Ngài gọi mười hai môn đệ lại và chuẩn bị sai họ đi ra từng đôi để giảng đạo, đồng thời cho họ quyền trừ tà ma. 8 Chúa Giê-xu căn dặn họ: “Đừng mang gì theo khi đi đường ngoài cây gậy. Đừng mang theo bánh mì, bao bị hoặc tiền trong túi. 9 Hãy mang dép nhưng chỉ đem đủ đồ mặc mà thôi. 10 Khi các con vào nhà ai thì cứ ở đó cho tới khi ra đi. 11 Nếu dân chúng nơi nào không chịu tiếp đón hoặc nghe các con, thì hãy rời khỏi nơi đó, phủi bụi [a] nơi chân các con, để làm dấu cảnh cáo họ.”
12 Các sứ đồ đi ra giảng dạy và khuyên dân chúng ăn năn. 13 Họ đuổi quỉ, xức dầu ô-liu [b] và chữa lành nhiều người bệnh.
Vua Hê-rốt lầm tưởng Chúa Giê-xu là Giăng Báp-tít(C)
14 Vua Hê-rốt nghe đồn về Chúa Giê-xu, vì lúc ấy Ngài đã nổi danh. Vài người bảo, “Ông ta là Giăng Báp-tít, người đã sống lại từ trong kẻ chết nên mới có thể làm những phép lạ như thế nầy.”
15 Kẻ khác nói, “Ông ta là Ê-li.”
Người khác lại nói, “Ông ta là nhà tiên tri cũng như các tiên tri thời xưa.”
16 Khi Hê-rốt nghe vậy liền bảo, “Ta đã chém đầu Giăng, bây giờ ông ta đã sống lại từ trong đám người chết!”
Giăng Báp-tít bị giết
17 Số là Hê-rốt ra lệnh cho quân sĩ dưới quyền tống giam Giăng, để làm vừa lòng vợ là Hê-rô-đia. Bà nầy trước kia là vợ của Phi-líp, em Hê-rốt, nhưng Hê-rốt lại lấy bà. 18 Giăng đã can ngăn Hê-rốt, “Lấy vợ của em mình là không phải lẽ.” 19 Vì thế Hê-rô-đia thù Giăng và muốn giết ông, nhưng không được 20 vì Hê-rốt sợ Giăng nên tìm cách che chở ông ta. Hê-rốt biết Giăng là người tốt và thánh thiện. Càng nghe Giăng bao nhiêu, Hê-rốt càng khó chịu bấy nhiêu, thế mà vua vẫn thích nghe.
21 Nhưng cơ hội tốt đã đến để Hê-rô-đia giết Giăng. Vào dịp sinh nhật Hê-rốt, vua làm tiệc thết đãi các đại quan văn võ trong triều đình, cùng các nhân vật quan trọng miền Ga-li-lê. 22 Lúc con gái Hê-rô-đia vào nhảy múa, Hê-rốt và các khách dự tiệc rất thích.
Nên vua bảo cô gái, “Con muốn xin điều gì bây giờ cha cũng cho hết.” 23 Vua còn hứa thêm, “Xin cái gì cũng được—dầu cho xin nửa vương quốc của cha, cha cũng cho.”
24 Cô gái chạy vào hỏi mẹ, “Con xin cái gì bây giờ hả mẹ?”
Bà mẹ đáp, “Con hãy xin cái đầu của Giăng Báp-tít.”
25 Cô gái vội vàng trở vào thưa với vua, “Con muốn xin cái đầu của Giăng Báp-tít để trên mâm ngay bây giờ.”
26 Vua rất buồn rầu nhưng vì đã trót hứa, mọi khách dự tiệc đều nghe, nên vua không muốn từ chối điều cô gái xin. 27 Vua liền truyền lệnh cho một người lính đi mang đầu Giăng đến. Người lính đi chém đầu Giăng trong ngục 28 để trên mâm mang vào. Người lính đưa mâm cho cô gái, cô gái mang vào đưa cho mẹ. 29 Các môn đệ Giăng nghe tin ấy liền đến lấy xác ông đem đi chôn cất.
Thết đãi hơn năm ngàn người(D)
30 Các môn đệ nhóm lại quanh Chúa Giê-xu và thuật lại cho Ngài nghe những gì họ làm và dạy. 31 Dân chúng kẻ đến người đi tấp nập đến nỗi Chúa Giê-xu và các môn đệ không có thì giờ để ăn. Chúa Giê-xu bảo các môn đệ, “Thôi chúng ta hãy đi tìm chỗ nào vắng vẻ để nghỉ ngơi.”
32 Nên họ xuống thuyền đi đến chỗ vắng, xa quần chúng. 33 Nhưng nhiều người trông thấy thì biết, vì thế dân chúng từ đủ các tỉnh liền chạy bộ đến chỗ Ngài sắp tới và đến trước Chúa Giê-xu cùng các môn đệ. 34 Vừa tới nơi, Ngài thấy dân chúng đang đợi. Ngài cảm thương họ vì họ như chiên không có người chăn nên Chúa Giê-xu dạy dỗ họ nhiều điều.
35 Xế chiều các môn đệ đến thưa với Ngài, “Chỗ nầy vắng vẻ mà trời đã xế chiều rồi. 36 Xin thầy cho họ về để họ đi vào vùng quê và làng mạc quanh đây mua thức ăn.”
37 Nhưng Chúa Giê-xu đáp, “Các con phải cho họ ăn.”
Các môn đệ thưa, “Chúng con phải dùng nguyên một năm lương mới đủ tiền mua thức ăn cho chừng nầy người!”
38 Chúa Giê-xu hỏi họ, “Các con có bao nhiêu ổ bánh? Đi xem thử đi.”
Sau khi đã kiểm điểm họ trình, “Dạ có năm ổ bánh và hai con cá.”
39 Chúa Giê-xu bảo các môn đệ cho dân chúng ngồi từng nhóm trên cỏ xanh. 40 Họ liền ngồi từng nhóm năm chục, nhóm một trăm. 41 Chúa Giê-xu cầm năm ổ bánh và hai con cá, ngước mắt lên trời tạ ơn Thượng Đế. Ngài bẻ bánh ra đưa cho các môn đệ phân phát cho dân chúng. Rồi Ngài cũng phát cá nữa. 42 Tất cả mọi người đều ăn uống no nê. 43 Các môn đệ gom được đầy mười hai giỏ bánh và cá thừa. 44 Trong số người ăn có hơn năm ngàn người đàn ông.
Chúa Giê-xu đi trên mặt nước(E)
45 Chúa Giê-xu liền bảo các môn đệ xuống thuyền, qua thành Bết-sai-đa ở bờ bên kia trước Ngài. Còn Ngài thì ở lại để giải tán dân chúng. 46 Sau khi họ về rồi, Chúa Giê-xu lên núi cầu nguyện.
47 Đêm xuống, thuyền đã đến giữa hồ rồi mà Chúa Giê-xu vẫn còn ở một mình trên bờ. 48 Ngài thấy các môn đệ chèo chống rất cực nhọc vì gặp gió ngược. Vào khoảng ba đến sáu giờ sáng, Chúa Giê-xu đi trên mặt nước đến với họ và Ngài định đi qua mặt thuyền. 49 Khi các môn đệ thấy Ngài đi trên mặt nước, thì tưởng thấy ma, nên la lên. 50 Người nào cũng nhìn thấy, nên sợ hoảng. Nhưng Chúa Giê-xu lập tức trấn an họ, “Đừng sợ, ta đây mà.” 51 Lúc Ngài bước vào thuyền với họ thì gió lặng. Các môn đệ vô cùng kinh ngạc. 52 Họ không hiểu ý nghĩa phép lạ về năm ổ bánh vì trí họ còn tối tăm.
Chúa Giê-xu chữa bệnh cho nhiều người(F)
53 Sau khi băng qua hồ thì họ đến bờ Ghê-nê-xa-rét rồi buộc thuyền tại đó. 54 Chúa Giê-xu vừa bước ra khỏi thuyền thì dân chúng nhận ra Ngài. 55 Quần chúng khắp nơi đổ xô đến, hễ nghe Ngài đi đâu là người ta khiêng những người bệnh nằm trên cáng đến đó. 56 Bất cứ chỗ nào Ngài đi, từ làng mạc, thành thị hay vùng quê, dân chúng cũng đều đưa những người bệnh đến đó, vào trong phố chợ. Họ nài nỉ xin được rờ ven áo Ngài. Hễ ai rờ đều được lành cả.

Jesús en Nazaret(A)
6 De allí, Jesús se fue a su tierra, y sus discípulos lo siguieron. 2 Cuando llegó el día de reposo, comenzó a enseñar en la sinagoga. Al escuchar a Jesús, muchos se preguntaban admirados: «¿De dónde sabe éste todo esto? ¿Qué clase de sabiduría ha recibido? ¿Cómo es que con sus manos puede hacer estos milagros? 3 ¿Acaso no es éste el carpintero, hijo de María y hermano de Jacobo, José, Judas y Simón? ¿Acaso no están sus hermanas aquí, entre nosotros?» Y les resultaba muy difícil entenderlo. 4 Pero Jesús les dijo: «No hay profeta sin honra, excepto en su propia tierra,(B) entre sus parientes, y en su familia.» 5 Y Jesús no pudo realizar allí ningún milagro, a no ser sanar a unos pocos enfermos y poner sobre ellos las manos; 6 y aunque se quedó asombrado de la incredulidad de ellos, siguió recorriendo las aldeas de alrededor para seguir enseñando.
Misión de los doce discípulos(C)
7 Jesús llamó a los doce y comenzó a enviarlos de dos en dos. Les dio autoridad sobre los espíritus impuros, 8 y les mandó(D) que no llevaran nada para el camino. Aparte de un bastón, no debían llevar mochila, ni pan, ni dinero en el cinto. 9 También podían llevar sandalias, pero no dos mudas de ropa. 10 Les dijo: «Cuando ustedes lleguen a una casa, quédense allí hasta que salgan de ese lugar. 11 Si en algún lugar no los reciben ni los escuchan, salgan de allí y sacúdanse el polvo de los pies, como un testimonio contra ellos.»(E) [De cierto les digo que, en el día del juicio, el castigo para los de Sodoma y Gomorra será más tolerable que para aquella ciudad.][a] 12 Los doce salieron e iban predicando a la gente que se arrepintiera. 13 También expulsaban muchos demonios, y ungían con aceite a muchos enfermos y los sanaban.(F)
Muerte de Juan el Bautista(G)
14 Como la fama de Jesús había llegado a ser muy notoria, el rey Herodes supo acerca de él y dijo: «¡Juan el Bautista ha resucitado de los muertos! ¡Por eso operan en él estos poderes!» 15 Algunos decían: «Es Elías.» Pero otros más afirmaban: «Es un profeta, o alguno de ellos.»(H) 16 Cuando Herodes oyó esto, dijo: «Éste es Juan, al que yo mandé que le cortaran la cabeza. ¡Ahora ha resucitado de los muertos!» 17 Y es que por causa de Herodías, la mujer de su hermano Felipe, que Herodes había tomado por mujer, Herodes mismo había mandado que aprehendieran a Juan y lo encadenaran en la cárcel. 18 Juan le había dicho a Herodes: «No te es lícito tener a la mujer de tu hermano.»(I) 19 Por eso Herodías le guardaba rencor, y deseaba matarlo; pero no podía 20 porque Herodes temía a Juan, pues sabía que era un hombre justo y santo. Y aunque lo que Juan le decía lo dejaba confundido, lo escuchaba de buena gana y lo protegía. 21 Pero llegó la oportunidad. En la fiesta de su cumpleaños, Herodes ofreció una cena a sus príncipes y tribunos, y a la gente importante de Galilea. 22 Entonces la hija de Herodías se presentó en la fiesta y bailó, y tanto agradó esto a Herodes y a los que estaban con él a la mesa, que el rey le dijo a la muchacha: «Pídeme lo que quieras, y yo te lo daré.» 23 Y bajo juramento le dijo: «Yo te daré todo lo que me pidas, ¡aun si me pides la mitad de mi reino!» 24 Ella salió y le preguntó a su madre: «¿Qué debo pedirle?» Y su madre le respondió: «¡Pídele la cabeza de Juan el Bautista!» 25 Enseguida ella entró corriendo y le dijo al rey: «Quiero que me des ahora mismo, en un plato, la cabeza de Juan el Bautista.» 26 Esto entristeció mucho al rey, pero por causa del juramento y de los que estaban con él a la mesa, no quiso desairarla. 27 Enseguida, el rey ordenó a un soldado de la guardia que le trajeran la cabeza de Juan. 28 El soldado fue a la cárcel y lo decapitó, y llevó su cabeza en un plato, se la entregó a la muchacha, y ésta se la entregó a su madre. 29 Cuando los discípulos de Juan supieron esto, fueron a reclamar el cuerpo para darle sepultura.
Alimentación de los cinco mil(J)
30 Los apóstoles se reunieron con Jesús y le contaron todo lo que habían hecho y enseñado. 31 Jesús les dijo: «Vengan conmigo ustedes solos, a un lugar apartado, y descansen un poco.» Y es que tanta gente iba y venía, que ellos no tenían tiempo ni para comer. 32 Así que se fueron solos en una barca a un lugar apartado. 33 Pero muchos que los vieron partir los reconocieron y los siguieron a pie desde las ciudades. Llegaron antes que ellos, y se reunieron con él. 34 Cuando Jesús salió de la barca y vio a tanta gente, tuvo compasión de ellos, porque parecían ovejas sin pastor,(K) y comenzó entonces a enseñarles muchas cosas. 35 El tiempo pasó y se hizo tarde, así que sus discípulos se acercaron a él y le dijeron: «Ya es muy tarde, y en este lugar no hay nada. 36 Despide a esta gente, para que vayan a los campos y aldeas cercanas, y compren algo de comer.» 37 Jesús les respondió: «Denles ustedes de comer.» Pero ellos le dijeron: «¿Quieres que vayamos a comprar pan y les demos de comer? ¡Eso costaría como doscientos denarios!» 38 Jesús les dijo: «Vayan a ver cuántos panes tienen ustedes.» Cuando lo averiguaron, le dijeron: «Tenemos cinco panes y dos pescados.» 39 Jesús les mandó entonces que hicieran que la gente se recostara por grupos sobre la hierba verde, 40 y ellos así lo hicieron, formando grupos de cien y de cincuenta personas. 41 Jesús tomó entonces los cinco panes y los dos pescados, y levantando los ojos al cielo los bendijo. Luego partió los panes y se los dio a sus discípulos para que los repartieran entre la gente, y también repartió entre todos los dos pescados. 42 Todos comieron y quedaron satisfechos, 43 y con lo que sobró del pan y los pescados llenaron doce cestas. 44 Los que comieron fueron como cinco mil hombres.
Jesús camina sobre las aguas(L)
45 Enseguida, hizo que sus discípulos subieran a la barca y que se adelantaran a la otra orilla, a Betsaida, mientras que él despedía a la multitud, 46 pero después de despedirlos se fue al monte a orar. 47 Cuando llegó la noche, la barca ya estaba a la mitad del lago, y Jesús estaba en tierra solo; 48 pero cerca del amanecer fue hacia ellos caminando sobre las aguas, pues los vio remar con mucha dificultad porque tenían el viento en contra. Hizo el intento de pasar de largo, 49 pero ellos, al verlo caminar sobre las aguas, pensaron que era un fantasma y comenzaron a gritar, 50 pues todos lo vieron y se asustaron. Pero él enseguida habló con ellos y les dijo: «¡Ánimo! ¡Soy yo! ¡No tengan miedo!» 51 Al subir a la barca con ellos, el viento se calmó. Y ellos estaban muy asombrados. 52 Más bien, su corazón estaba endurecido, y aún no habían entendido lo de los panes.
Jesús sana a los enfermos en Genesaret(M)
53 Terminada la travesía, llegaron a la orilla y tocaron tierra en Genesaret. 54 Tan pronto como bajaron de la barca, la gente reconoció a Jesús, 55 y a medida que recorrían todos los alrededores, en cuanto sabían donde estaba Jesús comenzaron a llevar de todas partes enfermos en sus lechos. 56 Dondequiera que él entraba, ya fueran aldeas, ciudades o campos, ponían en las calles a los que estaban enfermos, y le rogaban que les permitiera tocar siquiera el borde de su manto. ¡Y todos los que lo tocaban quedaban sanos!

A Prophet Without Honor(A)
6 Jesus left there and went to his hometown,(B) accompanied by his disciples. 2 When the Sabbath came,(C) he began to teach in the synagogue,(D) and many who heard him were amazed.(E)
“Where did this man get these things?” they asked. “What’s this wisdom that has been given him? What are these remarkable miracles he is performing? 3 Isn’t this the carpenter? Isn’t this Mary’s son and the brother of James, Joseph,[a] Judas and Simon?(F) Aren’t his sisters here with us?” And they took offense at him.(G)
4 Jesus said to them, “A prophet is not without honor except in his own town, among his relatives and in his own home.”(H) 5 He could not do any miracles there, except lay his hands on(I) a few sick people and heal them. 6 He was amazed at their lack of faith.
Jesus Sends Out the Twelve(J)
Then Jesus went around teaching from village to village.(K) 7 Calling the Twelve to him,(L) he began to send them out two by two(M) and gave them authority over impure spirits.(N)
8 These were his instructions: “Take nothing for the journey except a staff—no bread, no bag, no money in your belts. 9 Wear sandals but not an extra shirt. 10 Whenever you enter a house, stay there until you leave that town. 11 And if any place will not welcome you or listen to you, leave that place and shake the dust off your feet(O) as a testimony against them.”
12 They went out and preached that people should repent.(P) 13 They drove out many demons and anointed many sick people with oil(Q) and healed them.
John the Baptist Beheaded(R)(S)
14 King Herod heard about this, for Jesus’ name had become well known. Some were saying,[b] “John the Baptist(T) has been raised from the dead, and that is why miraculous powers are at work in him.”
15 Others said, “He is Elijah.”(U)
And still others claimed, “He is a prophet,(V) like one of the prophets of long ago.”(W)
16 But when Herod heard this, he said, “John, whom I beheaded, has been raised from the dead!”
17 For Herod himself had given orders to have John arrested, and he had him bound and put in prison.(X) He did this because of Herodias, his brother Philip’s wife, whom he had married. 18 For John had been saying to Herod, “It is not lawful for you to have your brother’s wife.”(Y) 19 So Herodias nursed a grudge against John and wanted to kill him. But she was not able to, 20 because Herod feared John and protected him, knowing him to be a righteous and holy man.(Z) When Herod heard John, he was greatly puzzled[c]; yet he liked to listen to him.
21 Finally the opportune time came. On his birthday Herod gave a banquet(AA) for his high officials and military commanders and the leading men of Galilee.(AB) 22 When the daughter of[d] Herodias came in and danced, she pleased Herod and his dinner guests.
The king said to the girl, “Ask me for anything you want, and I’ll give it to you.” 23 And he promised her with an oath, “Whatever you ask I will give you, up to half my kingdom.”(AC)
24 She went out and said to her mother, “What shall I ask for?”
“The head of John the Baptist,” she answered.
25 At once the girl hurried in to the king with the request: “I want you to give me right now the head of John the Baptist on a platter.”
26 The king was greatly distressed, but because of his oaths and his dinner guests, he did not want to refuse her. 27 So he immediately sent an executioner with orders to bring John’s head. The man went, beheaded John in the prison, 28 and brought back his head on a platter. He presented it to the girl, and she gave it to her mother. 29 On hearing of this, John’s disciples came and took his body and laid it in a tomb.
Jesus Feeds the Five Thousand(AD)(AE)
30 The apostles(AF) gathered around Jesus and reported to him all they had done and taught.(AG) 31 Then, because so many people were coming and going that they did not even have a chance to eat,(AH) he said to them, “Come with me by yourselves to a quiet place and get some rest.”
32 So they went away by themselves in a boat(AI) to a solitary place. 33 But many who saw them leaving recognized them and ran on foot from all the towns and got there ahead of them. 34 When Jesus landed and saw a large crowd, he had compassion on them, because they were like sheep without a shepherd.(AJ) So he began teaching them many things.
35 By this time it was late in the day, so his disciples came to him. “This is a remote place,” they said, “and it’s already very late. 36 Send the people away so that they can go to the surrounding countryside and villages and buy themselves something to eat.”
37 But he answered, “You give them something to eat.”(AK)
They said to him, “That would take more than half a year’s wages[e]! Are we to go and spend that much on bread and give it to them to eat?”
38 “How many loaves do you have?” he asked. “Go and see.”
When they found out, they said, “Five—and two fish.”(AL)
39 Then Jesus directed them to have all the people sit down in groups on the green grass. 40 So they sat down in groups of hundreds and fifties. 41 Taking the five loaves and the two fish and looking up to heaven, he gave thanks and broke the loaves.(AM) Then he gave them to his disciples to distribute to the people. He also divided the two fish among them all. 42 They all ate and were satisfied, 43 and the disciples picked up twelve basketfuls of broken pieces of bread and fish. 44 The number of the men who had eaten was five thousand.
Jesus Walks on the Water(AN)(AO)
45 Immediately Jesus made his disciples get into the boat(AP) and go on ahead of him to Bethsaida,(AQ) while he dismissed the crowd. 46 After leaving them, he went up on a mountainside to pray.(AR)
47 Later that night, the boat was in the middle of the lake, and he was alone on land. 48 He saw the disciples straining at the oars, because the wind was against them. Shortly before dawn he went out to them, walking on the lake. He was about to pass by them, 49 but when they saw him walking on the lake, they thought he was a ghost.(AS) They cried out, 50 because they all saw him and were terrified.
Immediately he spoke to them and said, “Take courage! It is I. Don’t be afraid.”(AT) 51 Then he climbed into the boat(AU) with them, and the wind died down.(AV) They were completely amazed, 52 for they had not understood about the loaves; their hearts were hardened.(AW)
53 When they had crossed over, they landed at Gennesaret and anchored there.(AX) 54 As soon as they got out of the boat, people recognized Jesus. 55 They ran throughout that whole region and carried the sick on mats to wherever they heard he was. 56 And wherever he went—into villages, towns or countryside—they placed the sick in the marketplaces. They begged him to let them touch even the edge of his cloak,(AY) and all who touched it were healed.

6 Then (B)He went out from there and came to His own country, and His disciples followed Him. 2 And when the Sabbath had come, He began to teach in the synagogue. And what wisdom is this which is given to Him, that such mighty works are performed by His hands! 3 Is this not the carpenter, the Son of Mary, and (E)brother of James, Joses, Judas, and Simon? Sending Out the Twelve(K)
7 (L)And He called the twelve to Himself, and began to send them out (M)two by two, and gave them power over unclean spirits. 8 He commanded them to take nothing for the journey except a staff—no bag, no bread, no copper in their money belts— 9 but (N)to wear sandals, and not to put on two tunics.
10 (O)Also He said to them, “In whatever place you enter a house, stay there till you depart from that place. 11 (P)And [a]whoever will not receive you nor hear you, when you depart from there, (Q)shake off the dust under your feet as a testimony against them. [b]Assuredly, I say to you, it will be more tolerable for Sodom and Gomorrah in the day of judgment than for that city!”
12 So they went out and preached that people should repent. 13 And they cast out many demons, (R)and anointed with oil many who were sick, and healed them.
John the Baptist Beheaded(S)
14 (T)Now King Herod heard of Him, for His name had become well known. And he said, “John the Baptist is risen from the dead, and therefore (U)these powers are at work in him.”
15 (V)Others said, “It is Elijah.”
And others said, “It is [c]the Prophet, (W)or like one of the prophets.”
16 (X)But when Herod heard, he said, “This is John, whom I beheaded; he has been raised from the dead!” 17 For Herod himself had sent and laid hold of John, and bound him in prison for the sake of Herodias, his brother Philip’s wife; for he had married her. 18 Because John had said to Herod, (Y)“It is not lawful for you to have your brother’s wife.”
19 Therefore Herodias [d]held it against him and wanted to kill him, but she could not; 20 for Herod (Z)feared John, knowing that he was a just and holy man, and he protected him. And when he heard him, he [e]did many things, and heard him gladly.
21 (AA)Then an opportune day came when Herod (AB)on his birthday gave a feast for his nobles, the high officers, and the chief men of Galilee. 22 And when Herodias’ daughter herself came in and danced, and pleased Herod and those who sat with him, the king said to the girl, “Ask me whatever you want, and I will give it to you.” 23 He also swore to her, (AC)“Whatever you ask me, I will give you, up to half my kingdom.”
24 So she went out and said to her mother, “What shall I ask?”
And she said, “The head of John the Baptist!”
25 Immediately she came in with haste to the king and asked, saying, “I want you to give me at once the head of John the Baptist on a platter.”
26 (AD)And the king was exceedingly sorry; yet, because of the oaths and because of those who sat with him, he did not want to refuse her. 27 Immediately the king sent an executioner and commanded his head to be brought. And he went and beheaded him in prison, 28 brought his head on a platter, and gave it to the girl; and the girl gave it to her mother. 29 When his disciples heard of it, they came and (AE)took away his corpse and laid it in a tomb.
Feeding the Five Thousand(AF)
30 (AG)Then the apostles gathered to Jesus and told Him all things, both what they had done and what they had taught. 31 (AH)And He said to them, “Come aside by yourselves to a deserted place and rest a while.” For (AI)there were many coming and going, and they did not even have time to eat. 32 (AJ)So they departed to a deserted place in the boat by themselves.
33 But [f]the multitudes saw them departing, and many (AK)knew Him and ran there on foot from all the cities. They arrived before them and came together to Him. 34 (AL)And Jesus, when He came out, saw a great multitude and was moved with compassion for them, because they were like (AM)sheep not having a shepherd. So (AN)He began to teach them many things. 35 (AO)When the day was now far spent, His disciples came to Him and said, “This is a deserted place, and already the hour is late. 36 Send them away, that they may go into the surrounding country and villages and buy themselves [g]bread; for they have nothing to eat.”
37 But He answered and said to them, “You give them something to eat.”
And they said to Him, (AP)“Shall we go and buy two hundred denarii worth of bread and give them something to eat?”
38 But He said to them, “How many loaves do you have? Go and see.”
And when they found out they said, (AQ)“Five, and two fish.”
39 Then He (AR)commanded them to make them all sit down in groups on the green grass. 40 So they sat down in ranks, in hundreds and in fifties. 41 And when He had taken the five loaves and the two fish, He (AS)looked up to heaven, (AT)blessed and broke the loaves, and gave them to His disciples to set before them; and the two fish He divided among them all. 42 So they all ate and were filled. 43 And they took up twelve baskets full of fragments and of the fish. 44 Now those who had eaten the loaves were [h]about five thousand men.
Jesus Walks on the Sea(AU)
45 (AV)Immediately He [i]made His disciples get into the boat and go before Him to the other side, to Bethsaida, while He sent the multitude away. 46 And when He had sent them away, He (AW)departed to the mountain to pray. 47 Now when evening came, the boat was in the middle of the sea; and He was alone on the land. 48 Then He saw them straining at rowing, for the wind was against them. Now about the fourth watch of the night He came to them, walking on the sea, and (AX)would have passed them by. 49 And when they saw Him walking on the sea, they supposed it was a (AY)ghost, and cried out; 50 for they all saw Him and were troubled. But immediately He talked with them and said to them, (AZ)“Be[j] of good cheer! It is I; do not be (BA)afraid.” 51 Then He went up into the boat to them, and the wind (BB)ceased. And they were greatly (BC)amazed in themselves beyond measure, and marveled. 52 For (BD)they had not understood about the loaves, because their (BE)heart was hardened.
Many Touch Him and Are Made Well(BF)
53 (BG)When they had crossed over, they came to the land of Gennesaret and anchored there. 54 And when they came out of the boat, immediately [k]the people recognized Him, 55 ran through that whole surrounding region, and began to carry about on beds those who were sick to wherever they heard He was. 56 Wherever He entered, into villages, cities, or the country, they laid the sick in the marketplaces, and begged Him that (BH)they might just touch the (BI)hem of His garment. And as many as touched Him were made well.
