⁵ Then, as they were afraid and bowed their faces to the earth, they said to them, “Why do you seek the living among the dead? ⁶ He is not here, but is risen! ^(A)Remember how He spoke to you when He was still in Galilee, ⁷ saying, ‘The Son of Man must be ^(B)delivered into the hands of sinful men, and be crucified, and the third day rise again.’ ”

⁸ And ^(C)they remembered His words.

The Road to Emmaus^(A)

^13 (B)Now behold, two of them were traveling that same day to a village called Emmaus, which was ^[a]seven miles from Jerusalem. ¹⁴ And they talked together of all these things which had happened. ¹⁵ So it was, while they conversed and reasoned, that ^(C)Jesus Himself drew near and went with them. ¹⁶ But ^(D)their eyes were restrained, so that they did not know Him.

¹⁷ And He said to them, “What kind of conversation is this that you have with one another as you ^[b]walk and are sad?”

²⁵ Then He said to them, “O foolish ones, and slow of heart to believe in all that the prophets have spoken! ^26 (A)Ought not the Christ to have suffered these things and to enter into His ^(B)glory?” ²⁷ And beginning at ^(C)Moses and ^(D)all the Prophets, He ^[a]expounded to them in all the Scriptures the things concerning Himself.

³² And they said to one another, “Did not our heart burn within us while He talked with us on the road, and while He opened the Scriptures to us?” ³³ So they rose up that very hour and returned to Jerusalem, and found the eleven and those who were with them gathered together,

³⁵ And they told about the things that had happened on the road, and how He was ^[a]known to them in the breaking of bread.

Jesus Appears to His Disciples^(A)

^36 (B)Now as they said these things, Jesus Himself stood in the midst of them, and said to them, “Peace to you.”

The Scriptures Opened

⁴⁴ Then He said to them, ^(A)“These are the words which I spoke to you while I was still with you, that all things must be fulfilled which were written in the Law of Moses and the Prophets and the Psalms concerning Me.” ⁴⁵ And ^(B)He opened their understanding, that they might comprehend the Scriptures.

⁴⁶ Then He said to them, ^(A)“Thus it is written, ^[a]and thus it was necessary for the Christ to suffer and to rise from the dead the third day, ⁴⁷ and that repentance and ^(B)remission of sins should be preached in His name ^(C)to all nations, beginning at Jerusalem. ⁴⁸ And ^(D)you are witnesses of these things. ^49 (E)Behold, I send the Promise of My Father upon you; but tarry in the city ^[b]of Jerusalem until you are endued with power from on high.”

The Ascension^(F)

⁵⁰ And He led them out ^(G)as far as Bethany, and He lifted up His hands and blessed them. ^51 (H)Now it came to pass, while He blessed them, that He was parted from them and carried up into heaven. ^52 (I)And they worshiped Him, and returned to Jerusalem with great joy, ⁵³ and were continually ^(J)in the temple ^[c]praising and blessing God. ^[d]Amen.
