The Disciples’ Eyes Opened

28 Then they drew near to the village where they were going, and (A)He [a]indicated that He would have gone farther. 29 But (B)they constrained Him, saying, (C)“Abide with us, for it is toward evening, and the day is far spent.” And He went in to stay with them.

30 Now it came to pass, as (D)He sat at the table with them, that He took bread, blessed and broke it, and gave it to them. 31 Then their eyes were opened and they knew Him; and He vanished from their sight.

32 And they said to one another, “Did not our heart burn within us while He talked with us on the road, and while He opened the Scriptures to us?” 33 So they rose up that very hour and returned to Jerusalem, and found the eleven and those who were with them gathered together, 34 saying, “The Lord is risen indeed, and (E)has appeared to Simon!” 35 And they told about the things that had happened on the road, and how He was [b]known to them in the breaking of bread.

14 (A)Pursue peace with all people, and holiness, (B)without which no one will see the Lord: 15 looking carefully lest anyone (C)fall short of the grace of God; lest any (D)root of bitterness springing up cause trouble, and by this many become defiled; 16 lest there be any (E)fornicator or [a]profane person like Esau, (F)who for one morsel of food sold his birthright. 17 For you know that afterward, when he wanted to inherit the blessing, he was (G)rejected, for he found no place for repentance, though he sought it diligently with tears.

The Glorious Company

18 For you have not come [b]to (H)the mountain that may be touched and that burned with fire, and to blackness and [c]darkness and tempest, 19 and the sound of a trumpet and the voice of words, so that those who heard it (I)begged that the word should not be spoken to them anymore. 20 (For they could not endure what was commanded: (J)“And if so much as a beast touches the mountain, it shall be stoned [d]or shot with an arrow.” 21 And so terrifying was the sight that Moses said, (K)“I am exceedingly afraid and trembling.”)

22 But you have come to Mount Zion and to the city of the living God, the heavenly Jerusalem, to an innumerable company of angels, 23 to the [e]general assembly and church of (L)the firstborn (M)who are registered in heaven, to God (N)the Judge of all, to the spirits of just men (O)made perfect, 24 to Jesus (P)the Mediator of the new covenant, and to (Q)the blood of sprinkling that speaks better things (R)than that of Abel.

Hear the Heavenly Voice

25 See that you do not refuse Him who speaks. For (S)if they did not escape who refused Him who spoke on earth, much more shall we not escape if we turn away from Him who speaks from heaven, 26 whose voice then shook the earth; but now He has promised, saying, (T)“Yet once more I [f]shake not only the earth, but also heaven.” 27 Now this, “Yet once more,” indicates the (U)removal of those things that are being shaken, as of things that are made, that the things which cannot be shaken may remain.

28 Therefore, since we are receiving a kingdom which cannot be shaken, let us have grace, by which we [g]may (V)serve God acceptably with reverence and godly fear. 29 For (W)our God is a consuming fire.

15 The rod and rebuke give (A)wisdom,
But a child left to himself brings shame to his mother.

16 When the wicked are multiplied, transgression increases;
But the righteous will see their (B)fall.

17 Correct your son, and he will give you rest;
Yes, he will give delight to your soul.

18 (C)Where there is no [a]revelation, the people cast off restraint;
But (D)happy is he who keeps the law.

19 A servant will not be corrected by mere words;
For though he understands, he will not respond.

20 Do you see a man hasty in his words?
(E)There is more hope for a fool than for him.

21 He who pampers his servant from childhood
Will have him as a son in the end.

22 (F)An angry man stirs up strife,

23 (G)A man’s pride will bring him low,
But the humble in spirit will retain honor.

24 Whoever is a partner with a thief hates his own life;
(H)He [b]swears to tell the truth, but reveals nothing.

25 (I)The fear of man brings a snare,
But whoever trusts in the Lord shall be [c]safe.

26 (J)Many seek the ruler’s [d]favor,
But justice for man comes from the Lord.

27 An unjust man is an abomination to the righteous,
And he who is upright in the way is an abomination to the wicked.

Separated from God

59 Behold, the Lord’s hand is not (A)shortened,
That it cannot save;
Nor His ear heavy,
That it cannot hear.
But your iniquities have separated you from your God;
And your sins have hidden His face from you,
So that He will (B)not hear.
For (C)your hands are defiled with [a]blood,
And your fingers with iniquity;
Your lips have spoken lies,
Your tongue has muttered perversity.

No one calls for justice,
Nor does any plead for truth.
They trust in (D)empty words and speak lies;
(E)They conceive [b]evil and bring forth iniquity.
They hatch vipers’ eggs and weave the spider’s web;
He who eats of their eggs dies,
And from that which is crushed a viper breaks out.

(F)Their webs will not become garments,
Nor will they cover themselves with their works;
Their works are works of iniquity,
And the act of violence is in their hands.
(G)Their feet run to evil,
And they make haste to shed (H)innocent blood;
(I)Their thoughts are thoughts of iniquity;
Wasting and (J)destruction are in their paths.
The way of (K)peace they have not known,
And there is no justice in their ways;
(L)They have made themselves crooked paths;
Whoever takes that way shall not know peace.

Sin Confessed

Therefore justice is far from us,
Nor does righteousness overtake us;
(M)We look for light, but there is darkness!
For brightness, but we walk in blackness!
10 (N)We grope for the wall like the blind,
And we grope as if we had no eyes;
We stumble at noonday as at twilight;
We are as dead men in desolate places.
11 We all growl like bears,
And (O)moan sadly like doves;
We look for justice, but there is none;
For salvation, but it is far from us.
12 For our (P)transgressions are multiplied before You,
And our sins testify against us;
For our transgressions are with us,
And as for our iniquities, we know them:
13 In transgressing and lying against the Lord,
And departing from our God,
Speaking oppression and revolt,
Conceiving and uttering (Q)from the heart words of falsehood.
14 Justice is turned back,
And righteousness stands afar off;
For truth is fallen in the street,
And equity cannot enter.
15 So truth fails,
And he who departs from evil makes himself a (R)prey.

The Redeemer of Zion

Then the Lord saw it, and [c]it displeased Him
That there was no justice.
16 (S)He saw that there was no man,
And (T)wondered that there was no intercessor;
(U)Therefore His own arm brought salvation for Him;
And His own righteousness, it sustained Him.
17 (V)For He put on righteousness as a breastplate,
And a helmet of salvation on His head;
He put on the garments of vengeance for clothing,
And was clad with zeal as a cloak.
18 (W)According to their deeds, accordingly He will repay,
Fury to His adversaries,
Recompense to His enemies;
The coastlands He will fully repay.
19 (X)So shall they fear
The name of the Lord from the west,
And His glory from the rising of the sun;
When the enemy comes in (Y)like a flood,
The Spirit of the Lord will lift up a standard against him.

20 “The(Z) Redeemer will come to Zion,
And to those who turn from transgression in Jacob,”
Says the Lord.

21 “As(AA) for Me,” says the Lord, “this is My covenant with them: My Spirit who is upon you, and My words which I have put in your mouth, shall not depart from your mouth, nor from the mouth of your descendants, nor from the mouth of your descendants’ descendants,” says the Lord, “from this time and forevermore.”

The Gentiles Bless Zion

60 Arise, (AB)shine;
For your light has come!
And (AC)the glory of the Lord is risen upon you.
For behold, the darkness shall cover the earth,
And deep darkness the people;
But the Lord will arise over you,
And His glory will be seen upon you.
The (AD)Gentiles shall come to your light,
And kings to the brightness of your rising.

“Lift(AE) up your eyes all around, and see:
They all gather together, (AF)they come to you;
Your sons shall come from afar,
And your daughters shall be nursed at your side.
Then you shall see and become radiant,
And your heart shall swell with joy;
Because (AG)the abundance of the sea shall be turned to you,
The wealth of the Gentiles shall come to you.
The multitude of camels shall cover your land,
The dromedaries of Midian and (AH)Ephah;
All those from (AI)Sheba shall come;
They shall bring (AJ)gold and incense,
And they shall proclaim the praises of the Lord.
All the flocks of (AK)Kedar shall be gathered together to you,
The rams of Nebaioth shall minister to you;
They shall ascend with (AL)acceptance on My altar,
And (AM)I will glorify the house of My glory.

“Who are these who fly like a cloud,
And like doves to their roosts?
(AN)Surely the coastlands shall wait for Me;
And the ships of Tarshish will come first,
(AO)To bring your sons from afar,
(AP)Their silver and their gold with them,
To the name of the Lord your God,
And to the Holy One of Israel,
(AQ)Because He has glorified you.

10 “The(AR) sons of foreigners shall build up your walls,
(AS)And their kings shall minister to you;
For (AT)in My wrath I struck you,
(AU)But in My favor I have had mercy on you.
11 Therefore your gates (AV)shall be open continually;
They shall not be shut day or night,
That men may bring to you the wealth of the Gentiles,
And their kings in procession.
12 (AW)For the nation and kingdom which will not serve you shall perish,
And those nations shall be utterly ruined.

13 “The(AX) glory of Lebanon shall come to you,
The cypress, the pine, and the box tree together,
To beautify the place of My sanctuary;
And I will make (AY)the place of My feet glorious.
14 Also the sons of those who afflicted you
Shall come (AZ)bowing to you,
And all those who despised you shall (BA)fall prostrate at the soles of your feet;
And they shall call you The City of the Lord,
(BB)Zion of the Holy One of Israel.

15 “Whereas you have been forsaken and hated,
So that no one went through you,
I will make you an eternal excellence,
A joy of many generations.
16 You shall drink the milk of the Gentiles,
(BC)And milk the breast of kings;
You shall know that (BD)I, the Lord, am your Savior
And your Redeemer, the Mighty One of Jacob.

17 “Instead of bronze I will bring gold,
Instead of iron I will bring silver,
Instead of wood, bronze,
And instead of stones, iron.
I will also make your officers peace,
And your magistrates righteousness.
18 Violence shall no longer be heard in your land,
Neither [d]wasting nor destruction within your borders;
But you shall call (BE)your walls Salvation,
And your gates Praise.

God the Glory of His People

19 “The (BF)sun shall no longer be your light by day,
Nor for brightness shall the moon give light to you;
But the Lord will be to you an everlasting light,
And (BG)your God your glory.
20 (BH)Your sun shall no longer go down,
Nor shall your moon withdraw itself;
For the Lord will be your everlasting light,
And the days of your mourning shall be ended.
21 (BI)Also your people shall all be righteous;
(BJ)They shall inherit the land forever,
(BK)The branch of My planting,
(BL)The work of My hands,
That I may be glorified.
22 (BM)A little one shall become a thousand,
And a small one a strong nation.
I, the Lord, will hasten it in its time.”

The Good News of Salvation

61 “The (BN)Spirit of the Lord God is upon Me,
Because the Lord (BO)has anointed Me
To preach good tidings to the poor;
He has sent Me (BP)to [e]heal the brokenhearted,
To proclaim (BQ)liberty to the captives,
And the opening of the prison to those who are bound;
(BR)To proclaim the acceptable year of the Lord,
And (BS)the day of vengeance of our God;
(BT)To comfort all who mourn,
To [f]console those who mourn in Zion,
(BU)To give them beauty for ashes,
The oil of joy for mourning,
The garment of praise for the spirit of heaviness;
That they may be called trees of righteousness,
(BV)The planting of the Lord, (BW)that He may be glorified.”

And they shall (BX)rebuild the old ruins,
They shall raise up the former desolations,
And they shall repair the ruined cities,
The desolations of many generations.
(BY)Strangers shall stand and feed your flocks,
And the sons of the foreigner
Shall be your plowmen and your vinedressers.
(BZ)But you shall be named the priests of the Lord,
They shall call you the servants of our God.
(CA)You shall eat the riches of the Gentiles,
And in their glory you shall boast.
(CB)Instead of your shame you shall have double honor,
And instead of confusion they shall rejoice in their portion.
Therefore in their land they shall possess double;
Everlasting joy shall be theirs.

“For (CC)I, the Lord, love justice;
(CD)I hate robbery [g]for burnt offering;
I will direct their work in truth,
(CE)And will make with them an everlasting covenant.
Their descendants shall be known among the Gentiles,
And their offspring among the people.
All who see them shall acknowledge them,
(CF)That they are the posterity whom the Lord has blessed.”

10 (CG)I will greatly rejoice in the Lord,
My soul shall be joyful in my God;
For (CH)He has clothed me with the garments of salvation,
He has covered me with the robe of righteousness,
(CI)As a bridegroom decks himself with ornaments,
And as a bride adorns herself with her jewels.
11 For as the earth brings forth its bud,
As the garden causes the things that are sown in it to spring forth,
So the Lord God will cause (CJ)righteousness and (CK)praise to spring forth before all the nations.
