7 (A)Now (B)Herod the tetrarch heard of all that was happening, and he was greatly perplexed, because it was said by some that (C)John had risen from the dead, 8 and by some that (D)Elijah had appeared, and by others that one of the prophets of old had risen again. 9 And Herod said, “I myself had John beheaded, but who is this man about whom I hear such things?” And (E)he kept trying to see Him.

7 Herod the ruler[a] heard about everything that was happening. He was confused because some people were saying that John had been raised from the dead, 8 others that Elijah had appeared, and still others that one of the ancient prophets had come back to life. 9 Herod said, “I beheaded John, so now who am I hearing about?” Herod wanted to see him.
