⁵⁵ But he turned and rebuked them.^[a]

^19 (A)Those whom I love, I reprove and discipline, so be zealous and repent.

^9 (A)Do not repay evil for evil or reviling for reviling, but on the contrary, ^(B)bless, for ^(C)to this you were called, that you may obtain a blessing.

¹⁰ But he said to her, “You speak as one of the ^(A)foolish women would speak. ^(B)Shall we receive good from God, and shall we not receive evil?”^{[a] (C)}In all this Job did not ^(D)sin with his lips.

^9 (A)“I myself was convinced that I ought to do many things in opposing the name of ^(B)Jesus of Nazareth. ^10 (C)And I did so in Jerusalem. I not only locked up many of the saints in prison after receiving authority ^(D)from the chief priests, but ^(E)when they were put to death I cast my vote against them. ¹¹ And ^(F)I punished them often in all the synagogues and tried to make them ^(G)blaspheme, and ^(H)in raging fury against them I ^(I)persecuted them even to foreign cities.

³ Then Paul said to him, “God is going to strike you, you ^(A)whitewashed ^(B)wall! Are you sitting to judge me according to the law, and yet ^(C)contrary to the law you ^(D)order me to be struck?” ⁴ Those who stood by said, “Would you revile ^(E)God's high priest?” ⁵ And Paul said, ^(F)“I did not know, brothers, that he was the high priest, for it is written, ^(G)‘You shall not speak evil of a ruler of your people.’”

⁵¹ And behold, one of those who were with Jesus stretched out his hand and drew his ^(A)sword and struck the servant^[a] of the high priest and cut off his ear.
