18 At that time the disciples came to Jesus and asked, “Who is the greatest in the kingdom of heaven?” He called a child, whom he put among them, and said, “Truly I tell you, unless you change and become like children, you will never enter the kingdom of heaven.(A) Whoever becomes humble like this child is the greatest in the kingdom of heaven. The Dispute about Greatness

24 A dispute also arose among them as to which one of them was to be regarded as the greatest.(A) 25 But he said to them, “The kings of the gentiles lord it over them, and those in authority over them are called benefactors.(B) 26 But not so with you; rather, the greatest among you must become like the youngest and the leader like one who serves.(C) 27 For who is greater, the one who is at the table or the one who serves? Is it not the one at the table? But I am among you as one who serves.(D)

Humility and Hospitality

When he noticed how the guests chose the places of honor, he told them a parable.(A) “When you are invited by someone to a wedding banquet, do not sit down at the place of honor, in case someone more distinguished than you has been invited by your host,(B) and the host who invited both of you may come and say to you, ‘Give this person your place,’ and then in disgrace you would start to take the lowest place. 10 But when you are invited, go and sit down at the lowest place, so that when your host comes, he may say to you, ‘Friend, move up higher’; then you will be honored in the presence of all who sit at the table with you.(C) 11 For all who exalt themselves will be humbled, and those who humble themselves will be exalted.”(D)
