⁴⁴ “Listen carefully to what I am about to tell you: The Son of Man is going to be delivered into the hands of men.”^(A)

²³ This man was handed over to you by God’s deliberate plan and foreknowledge;^(A) and you, with the help of wicked men,^[a] put him to death by nailing him to the cross.^(B)

²² And he said, “The Son of Man^(A) must suffer many things^(B) and be rejected by the elders, the chief priests and the teachers of the law,^(C) and he must be killed^(D) and on the third day^(E) be raised to life.”^(F)

² fixing our eyes on Jesus,^(A) the pioneer^(B) and perfecter of faith. For the joy set before him he endured the cross,^(C) scorning its shame,^(D) and sat down at the right hand of the throne of God.^{(E) 3} Consider him who endured such opposition from sinners, so that you will not grow weary^(F) and lose heart.

God Disciplines His Children

⁴ In your struggle against sin, you have not yet resisted to the point of shedding your blood.^{(G) 5} And have you completely forgotten this word of encouragement that addresses you as a father addresses his son? It says,

Warning to Pay Attention

2 We must pay the most careful attention, therefore, to what we have heard, so that we do not drift away.^(A)

³ so that no one would be unsettled by these trials.^(A) For you know quite well that we are destined for them.^{(B) 4} In fact, when we were with you, we kept telling you that we would be persecuted. And it turned out that way, as you well know.^(C)

²⁷ Indeed Herod^(A) and Pontius Pilate^(B) met together with the Gentiles and the people of Israel in this city to conspire against your holy servant Jesus,^(C) whom you anointed. ²⁸ They did what your power and will had decided beforehand should happen.^(D)

¹¹ Jesus answered, “You would have no power over me if it were not given to you from above.^(A) Therefore the one who handed me over to you^(B) is guilty of a greater sin.”

⁴ I have told you this, so that when their time comes you will remember^(A) that I warned you about them. I did not tell you this from the beginning because I was with you,^(B)
