²³ Then he said to them all, “If any wish to come after me, let them deny themselves and take up their cross daily and follow me.^(A)

³⁸ and whoever does not take up the cross and follow me is not worthy of me.^{(A) 39} Those who find their life will lose it, and those who lose their life for my sake will find it.^(B)

²⁶ “Whoever comes to me and does not hate father and mother, wife and children, brothers and sisters, yes, and even life itself, cannot be my disciple.^{(A) 27} Whoever does not carry the cross and follow me cannot be my disciple.^(B)

³⁴ He called the crowd with his disciples and said to them, “If any wish to come^[a] after me, let them deny themselves and take up their cross and follow me.^{(A) 35} For those who want to save their life will lose it, and those who lose their life for my sake, and for the sake of the gospel,^[b] will save it.^{(B) 36} For what will it profit them to gain the whole world and forfeit their life? ³⁷ Indeed, what can they give in return for their life? ³⁸ Those who are ashamed of me and of my words^[c] in this adulterous and sinful generation, of them the Son of Man will also be ashamed when he comes in the glory of his Father with the holy angels.”^(C)

¹³ for if you live according to the flesh, you will die, but if by the Spirit you put to death the deeds of the body, you will live.^(A)

²⁵ Those who love their life lose it, and those who hate their life in this world will keep it for eternal life.^{(A) 26} Whoever serves me must follow me, and where I am, there will my servant be also. Whoever serves me, the Father will honor.^(B)

¹² training us to renounce impiety and worldly passions and in the present age to live lives that are self-controlled, upright, and godly,^(A)

⁵ Put to death, therefore, whatever in you is earthly: sexual immorality, impurity, passion, evil desire, and greed (which is idolatry).^(A)

¹² Indeed, all who want to live a godly life in Christ Jesus will be persecuted.^(A)

²² And Peter took him aside and began to rebuke him, saying, “God forbid it, Lord! This must never happen to you.” ²³ But he turned and said to Peter, “Get behind me, Satan! You are a hindrance^[a] to me, for you are setting your mind not on divine things but on human things.”

The Cross and Self-Denial
