¹⁹ They replied, “Some say John the Baptist;^(A) others say Elijah; and still others, that one of the prophets of long ago has come back to life.”^(B)

²¹ They asked him, “Then who are you? Are you Elijah?”^(A)

He said, “I am not.”

“Are you the Prophet?”^(B)

He answered, “No.”

⁷ Now Herod^(A) the tetrarch heard about all that was going on. And he was perplexed because some were saying that John^(B) had been raised from the dead,^{(C) 8} others that Elijah had appeared,^(D) and still others that one of the prophets of long ago had come back to life.^(E)

¹⁵ Others said, “He is Elijah.”^(A)

And still others claimed, “He is a prophet,^(B) like one of the prophets of long ago.”^(C)

² and he said to his attendants, “This is John the Baptist;^(A) he has risen from the dead! That is why miraculous powers are at work in him.”

⁵ “See, I will send the prophet Elijah^(A) to you before that great and dreadful day of the Lord comes.^(B)

¹⁷ Then they turned again to the blind man, “What have you to say about him? It was your eyes he opened.”

The man replied, “He is a prophet.”^(A)

⁴⁰ On hearing his words, some of the people said, “Surely this man is the Prophet.”^(A)

²⁵ questioned him, “Why then do you baptize if you are not the Messiah, nor Elijah, nor the Prophet?”
