Jesus Heals a Centurion’s Servant
7 After Jesus[a] had finished all his sayings in the hearing of the people, he entered Capernaum. 2 A centurion there had a slave whom he valued highly, and who was ill and close to death. 3 When he heard about Jesus, he sent some Jewish elders to him, asking him to come and heal his slave. 4 When they came to Jesus, they appealed to him earnestly, saying, ‘He is worthy of having you do this for him, 5 for he loves our people, and it is he who built our synagogue for us.’ 6 And Jesus went with them, but when he was not far from the house, the centurion sent friends to say to him, ‘Lord, do not trouble yourself, for I am not worthy to have you come under my roof; 7 therefore I did not presume to come to you. But only speak the word, and let my servant be healed. 8 For I also am a man set under authority, with soldiers under me; and I say to one, “Go”, and he goes, and to another, “Come”, and he comes, and to my slave, “Do this”, and the slave does it.’ 9 When Jesus heard this he was amazed at him, and turning to the crowd that followed him, he said, ‘I tell you, not even in Israel have I found such faith.’ 10 When those who had been sent returned to the house, they found the slave in good health.
Jesus Raises the Widow’s Son at Nain
11 Soon afterwards[b] he went to a town called Nain, and his disciples and a large crowd went with him. 12 As he approached the gate of the town, a man who had died was being carried out. He was his mother’s only son, and she was a widow; and with her was a large crowd from the town. 13 When the Lord saw her, he had compassion for her and said to her, ‘Do not weep.’ 14 Then he came forward and touched the bier, and the bearers stood still. And he said, ‘Young man, I say to you, rise!’ 15 The dead man sat up and began to speak, and Jesus[c] gave him to his mother. 16 Fear seized all of them; and they glorified God, saying, ‘A great prophet has risen among us!’ and ‘God has looked favourably on his people!’ 17 This word about him spread throughout Judea and all the surrounding country.
Messengers from John the Baptist
18 The disciples of John reported all these things to him. So John summoned two of his disciples 19 and sent them to the Lord to ask, ‘Are you the one who is to come, or are we to wait for another?’ 20 When the men had come to him, they said, ‘John the Baptist has sent us to you to ask, “Are you the one who is to come, or are we to wait for another?”’ 21 Jesus[d] had just then cured many people of diseases, plagues, and evil spirits, and had given sight to many who were blind. 22 And he answered them, ‘Go and tell John what you have seen and heard: the blind receive their sight, the lame walk, the lepers[e] are cleansed, the deaf hear, the dead are raised, the poor have good news brought to them. 23 And blessed is anyone who takes no offence at me.’
24 When John’s messengers had gone, Jesus[f] began to speak to the crowds about John:[g] ‘What did you go out into the wilderness to look at? A reed shaken by the wind? 25 What then did you go out to see? Someone[h] dressed in soft robes? Look, those who put on fine clothing and live in luxury are in royal palaces. 26 What then did you go out to see? A prophet? Yes, I tell you, and more than a prophet. 27 This is the one about whom it is written,
“See, I am sending my messenger ahead of you,
who will prepare your way before you.”
28 I tell you, among those born of women no one is greater than John; yet the least in the kingdom of God is greater than he.’ 29 (And all the people who heard this, including the tax-collectors, acknowledged the justice of God,[i] because they had been baptized with John’s baptism. 30 But by refusing to be baptized by him, the Pharisees and the lawyers rejected God’s purpose for themselves.)
31 ‘To what then will I compare the people of this generation, and what are they like? 32 They are like children sitting in the market-place and calling to one another,
“We played the flute for you, and you did not dance;
we wailed, and you did not weep.”
33 For John the Baptist has come eating no bread and drinking no wine, and you say, “He has a demon”; 34 the Son of Man has come eating and drinking, and you say, “Look, a glutton and a drunkard, a friend of tax-collectors and sinners!” 35 Nevertheless, wisdom is vindicated by all her children.’
A Sinful Woman Forgiven
36 One of the Pharisees asked Jesus[j] to eat with him, and he went into the Pharisee’s house and took his place at the table. 37 And a woman in the city, who was a sinner, having learned that he was eating in the Pharisee’s house, brought an alabaster jar of ointment. 38 She stood behind him at his feet, weeping, and began to bathe his feet with her tears and to dry them with her hair. Then she continued kissing his feet and anointing them with the ointment. 39 Now when the Pharisee who had invited him saw it, he said to himself, ‘If this man were a prophet, he would have known who and what kind of woman this is who is touching him—that she is a sinner.’ 40 Jesus spoke up and said to him, ‘Simon, I have something to say to you.’ ‘Teacher,’ he replied, ‘speak.’ 41 ‘A certain creditor had two debtors; one owed five hundred denarii,[k] and the other fifty. 42 When they could not pay, he cancelled the debts for both of them. Now which of them will love him more?’ 43 Simon answered, ‘I suppose the one for whom he cancelled the greater debt.’ And Jesus[l] said to him, ‘You have judged rightly.’ 44 Then turning towards the woman, he said to Simon, ‘Do you see this woman? I entered your house; you gave me no water for my feet, but she has bathed my feet with her tears and dried them with her hair. 45 You gave me no kiss, but from the time I came in she has not stopped kissing my feet. 46 You did not anoint my head with oil, but she has anointed my feet with ointment. 47 Therefore, I tell you, her sins, which were many, have been forgiven; hence she has shown great love. But the one to whom little is forgiven, loves little.’ 48 Then he said to her, ‘Your sins are forgiven.’ 49 But those who were at the table with him began to say among themselves, ‘Who is this who even forgives sins?’ 50 And he said to the woman, ‘Your faith has saved you; go in peace.’

7 Now when he had ended all his sayings in the audience of the people, he entered into Capernaum.
2 And a certain centurion's servant, who was dear unto him, was sick, and ready to die.
3 And when he heard of Jesus, he sent unto him the elders of the Jews, beseeching him that he would come and heal his servant.
4 And when they came to Jesus, they besought him instantly, saying, That he was worthy for whom he should do this:
5 For he loveth our nation, and he hath built us a synagogue.
6 Then Jesus went with them. And when he was now not far from the house, the centurion sent friends to him, saying unto him, Lord, trouble not thyself: for I am not worthy that thou shouldest enter under my roof:
7 Wherefore neither thought I myself worthy to come unto thee: but say in a word, and my servant shall be healed.
8 For I also am a man set under authority, having under me soldiers, and I say unto one, Go, and he goeth; and to another, Come, and he cometh; and to my servant, Do this, and he doeth it.
9 When Jesus heard these things, he marvelled at him, and turned him about, and said unto the people that followed him, I say unto you, I have not found so great faith, no, not in Israel.
10 And they that were sent, returning to the house, found the servant whole that had been sick.
11 And it came to pass the day after, that he went into a city called Nain; and many of his disciples went with him, and much people.
12 Now when he came nigh to the gate of the city, behold, there was a dead man carried out, the only son of his mother, and she was a widow: and much people of the city was with her.
13 And when the Lord saw her, he had compassion on her, and said unto her, Weep not.
14 And he came and touched the bier: and they that bare him stood still. And he said, Young man, I say unto thee, Arise.
15 And he that was dead sat up, and began to speak. And he delivered him to his mother.
16 And there came a fear on all: and they glorified God, saying, That a great prophet is risen up among us; and, That God hath visited his people.
17 And this rumour of him went forth throughout all Judaea, and throughout all the region round about.
18 And the disciples of John shewed him of all these things.
19 And John calling unto him two of his disciples sent them to Jesus, saying, Art thou he that should come? or look we for another?
20 When the men were come unto him, they said, John Baptist hath sent us unto thee, saying, Art thou he that should come? or look we for another?
21 And in that same hour he cured many of their infirmities and plagues, and of evil spirits; and unto many that were blind he gave sight.
22 Then Jesus answering said unto them, Go your way, and tell John what things ye have seen and heard; how that the blind see, the lame walk, the lepers are cleansed, the deaf hear, the dead are raised, to the poor the gospel is preached.
23 And blessed is he, whosoever shall not be offended in me.
24 And when the messengers of John were departed, he began to speak unto the people concerning John, What went ye out into the wilderness for to see? A reed shaken with the wind?
25 But what went ye out for to see? A man clothed in soft raiment? Behold, they which are gorgeously apparelled, and live delicately, are in kings' courts.
26 But what went ye out for to see? A prophet? Yea, I say unto you, and much more than a prophet.
27 This is he, of whom it is written, Behold, I send my messenger before thy face, which shall prepare thy way before thee.
28 For I say unto you, Among those that are born of women there is not a greater prophet than John the Baptist: but he that is least in the kingdom of God is greater than he.
29 And all the people that heard him, and the publicans, justified God, being baptized with the baptism of John.
30 But the Pharisees and lawyers rejected the counsel of God against themselves, being not baptized of him.
31 And the Lord said, Whereunto then shall I liken the men of this generation? and to what are they like?
32 They are like unto children sitting in the marketplace, and calling one to another, and saying, We have piped unto you, and ye have not danced; we have mourned to you, and ye have not wept.
33 For John the Baptist came neither eating bread nor drinking wine; and ye say, He hath a devil.
34 The Son of man is come eating and drinking; and ye say, Behold a gluttonous man, and a winebibber, a friend of publicans and sinners!
35 But wisdom is justified of all her children.
36 And one of the Pharisees desired him that he would eat with him. And he went into the Pharisee's house, and sat down to meat.
37 And, behold, a woman in the city, which was a sinner, when she knew that Jesus sat at meat in the Pharisee's house, brought an alabaster box of ointment,
38 And stood at his feet behind him weeping, and began to wash his feet with tears, and did wipe them with the hairs of her head, and kissed his feet, and anointed them with the ointment.
39 Now when the Pharisee which had bidden him saw it, he spake within himself, saying, This man, if he were a prophet, would have known who and what manner of woman this is that toucheth him: for she is a sinner.
40 And Jesus answering said unto him, Simon, I have somewhat to say unto thee. And he saith, Master, say on.
41 There was a certain creditor which had two debtors: the one owed five hundred pence, and the other fifty.
42 And when they had nothing to pay, he frankly forgave them both. Tell me therefore, which of them will love him most?
43 Simon answered and said, I suppose that he, to whom he forgave most. And he said unto him, Thou hast rightly judged.
44 And he turned to the woman, and said unto Simon, Seest thou this woman? I entered into thine house, thou gavest me no water for my feet: but she hath washed my feet with tears, and wiped them with the hairs of her head.
45 Thou gavest me no kiss: but this woman since the time I came in hath not ceased to kiss my feet.
46 My head with oil thou didst not anoint: but this woman hath anointed my feet with ointment.
47 Wherefore I say unto thee, Her sins, which are many, are forgiven; for she loved much: but to whom little is forgiven, the same loveth little.
48 And he said unto her, Thy sins are forgiven.
49 And they that sat at meat with him began to say within themselves, Who is this that forgiveth sins also?
50 And he said to the woman, Thy faith hath saved thee; go in peace.

Časnikov sluga
(Mt 8,5-13; Iv 4,43-54)
7 Nakon što je narodu rekao sve to, uputio se u Kafarnaum. 2 Tamo je živio neki časnik čiji je sluga bio jako bolestan, na pragu smrti, a časniku je bio vrlo drag. 3 Kad je časnik čuo za Isusa, poslao je židovske starješine da ga zamole da dođe i spasi život njegovom slugi. 4 Kad su stigli k Isusu, počeli su ga usrdno moliti: »On zaslužuje da mu to učiniš 5 jer voli naš narod i sagradio nam je sinagogu.«
6 Isus je otišao s njima i, kad je već bio blizu kuće, časnik mu je poslao ususret svoje prijatelje s porukom: »Gospodine, nemoj se zamarati jer nisam dostojan da dođeš pod moj krov. 7 Zato i nisam došao pred tebe, ali reci riječ i moj će sluga ozdraviti. 8 Jer, kao što sam i sâm podređen drugima, tako i ja imam vojnike pod sobom. Jednome kažem: ‘Idi!’ i on ode, a drugome: ‘Dođi!’ i on dođe. I svojem slugi kažem: ‘Učini to!’ i on posluša.«
9 Kad je Isus to čuo, ostao je zadivljen. Okrenuo se gomili koja ga je slijedila i rekao im: »Kažem vam, nisam naišao na ovakvu vjeru ni u Izraelu.«
10 A kad su se oni što ih je časnik poslao vratili, našli su slugu zdravog.
Mladić iz Naina
11 Isus je zatim otišao u grad koji se zvao Nain. Slijedili su ga učenici i mnoštvo ljudi. 12 Kad se približio gradskim vratima, ugledao je pogrebnu povorku. Neka je udovica pokapala sina jedinca. S njom je bilo i mnogo ljudi iz grada. 13 Kad ju je Gospodin ugledao, sažalio se nad njom i rekao joj: »Nemoj plakati!« 14 Prišao je i dotaknuo lijes, a oni koji su ga nosili zaustavili su se. Tada je rekao: »Mladiću, tebi govorim, ustani!« 15 I mrtvac je ustao i progovorio, a Isus ga je predao njegovoj majci.
16 Sve je obuzelo strahopoštovanje i počeli su slaviti Boga: »Među nama se pojavio veliki prorok« i »Bog je došao upomoć svom narodu!«
17 Vijest o Isusu proširila se po cijeloj Judeji i okolici.
Isus i Ivan Krstitelj
(Mt 11,2-19)
18 Ivanovi su učenici sve to ispričali Ivanu. 19 On je tada pozvao dvojicu svojih učenika i poslao ih Gospodinu da ga upitaju: »Jesi li ti onaj koji treba doći ili trebamo čekati drugoga?«
20 Kad su došli k Isusu, rekli su mu: »Ivan Krstitelj nas je poslao da te pitamo: ‘Jesi li ti onaj koji treba doći ili trebamo čekati drugoga?’«
21 U to je vrijeme ozdravio mnoge od bolesti, muka i zlih duhova, a mnogim je slijepima vratio vid. 22 Zato im je odgovorio: »Idite i recite Ivanu što ste vidjeli i čuli: slijepi vide, hromi hodaju, gubavci ozdravljaju, gluhi čuju, mrtvi oživljavaju, a siromašnima se propovijeda Radosna vijest. 23 Blago onomu tko se zbog mene ne pokoleba.«
24 Nakon što su Ivanovi glasnici otišli, počeo je mnoštvu govoriti o Ivanu: »Što ste išli vidjeti u pustinji? Trsku koja se savija na vjetru? 25 Ne? Što ste onda išli vidjeti? Čovjeka odjevenog u finu odjeću? Ne, ljudi koji nose finu odjeću i žive u raskoši nalaze se u kraljevskim palačama. 26 Pa što ste onda išli vidjeti? Proroka? Da, kažem vam, i više od proroka. 27 On je onaj o kojem je pisano:
‘Gledaj, šaljem svoga glasnika ispred tebe.
On će pred tobom pripremiti put.’[a]
28 Kažem vam, među rođenima od žene nitko nije veći od Ivana. Pa, ipak, i onaj najmanji u Božjem kraljevstvu veći je od njega.«
29 Svi koji su to čuli priznali su da je Božji nauk ispravan, čak i neki poreznici. To su bili oni koje je krstio Ivan. 30 No farizeji i učitelji Zakona odbacili su plan koji je Bog imao za njih tako što su odbili da ih Ivan krsti.
31 »S čime ću usporediti ljude ovog vremena? Kakvi su oni? 32 Oni su kao djeca koja sjede na tržnici i jedni drugima dovikuju:
‘Svirali smo vam,
ali niste plesali;
pjevali smo vam tužaljku,
ali niste plakali.’
33 Jer, Ivan Krstitelj došao je i nije jeo kruha niti je pio vina, a vi govorite: ‘U njemu je zli duh.’ 34 Sin je Čovječji, pak, došao, jede i pije, a vi kažete: ‘Gledajte, ovaj je proždrljivac i pijanac, prijatelj poreznika i grešnika!’ 35 No mudrost se pokazuje ispravnom na onima koji je prihvaćaju.«
Šimun farizej
36 Neki je farizej pozvao Isusa k sebi na objed. Isus je otišao u farizejevu kuću i smjestio se za stol. 37 U tom je gradu živjela neka žena koja je bila javna grešnica. Kad je doznala da Isus jede u farizejevoj kući, došla je i donijela alabastrenu posudu s mirisnim uljem. 38 Stajala je iza Isusa, do njegovih nogu, i jecajući mu počela prati noge svojim suzama, brisati ih kosom, ljubiti i mazati ih mirisnim uljem. 39 Kad je to vidio farizej, koji ga je pozvao k sebi, rekao je u sebi: »Da je ovaj čovjek prorok, znao bi tko je i kakva je ovo žena koja ga dodiruje. Znao bi da je grešnica.«
40 Isus mu je rekao: »Šimune, moram ti nešto reći.« Šimun je odgovorio: »Samo reci, učitelju!«
41 »Nekom su vjerovniku dugovala dvojica; jedan mu je dugovao petsto srebrnjaka, a drugi pedeset. 42 Budući da mu nisu mogli vratiti, on im je obojici velikodušno oprostio dug. Koji će ga od njih sada više voljeti?«
43 Šimun je odgovorio: »Pretpostavljam onaj kojemu je oprošten veći dug.«
»Dobro si prosudio«, odgovorio mu je Isus. 44 Na to se okrenuo prema ženi i rekao Šimunu: »Vidiš li ovu ženu? Ja sam došao u tvoju kuću i ti mi nisi dao vode da operem noge. A ona mi ih je oprala svojim suzama i obrisala svojom kosom. 45 Ti me nisi dočekao poljupcem, a ona mi, otkako sam ušao, nije prestala ljubiti noge. 46 Ti mi nisi pomazao glavu uljem, a ona mi je mirisnim uljem namazala noge. 47 I zato ti kažem da su joj oprošteni mnogi grijesi jer je pokazala puno ljubavi. A onaj komu se malo prašta, malo i ljubi.«
48 Onda je rekao ženi: »Grijesi su ti oprošteni.«
49 Na to su oni koji su jeli s njim počeli govoriti jedan drugome: »Tko je ovaj da čak i grijehe oprašta?«
50 A on joj je rekao: »Tvoja te vjera spasila. Idi u miru!«
