A Centurion’s Faith
7 When he had concluded saying all this to the people who were listening, he entered Capernaum.(A) 2 A centurion’s servant, who was highly valued by him, was sick and about to die. 3 When the centurion heard about Jesus, he sent some Jewish elders to him, requesting him to come and save the life of his servant. 4 When they reached Jesus, they pleaded with him earnestly, saying, “He is worthy for you to grant this, 5 because he loves our nation and has built us a synagogue.”(B)
6 Jesus went with them, and when he was not far from the house, the centurion sent friends to tell him, “Lord, don’t trouble yourself, since I am not worthy to have you come under my roof. 7 That is why I didn’t even consider myself worthy to come to you. But say the word, and my servant will be healed.[a](C) 8 For I too am a man placed under authority, having soldiers under my command. I say to this one, ‘Go,’ and he goes; and to another, ‘Come,’ and he comes; and to my servant, ‘Do this,’ and he does it.”
9 Jesus heard this and was amazed at him, and turning to the crowd following him, he said, “I tell you, I have not found so great a faith even in Israel.” 10 When those who had been sent returned to the house, they found the servant in good health.
A Widow’s Son Raised to Life
11 Afterward he was on his way to a town called Nain. His disciples and a large crowd were traveling with him. 12 Just as he neared the gate of the town, a dead man was being carried out. He was his mother’s only son, and she was a widow.(D) A large crowd from the town was also with her. 13 When the Lord saw her, he had compassion on her(E) and said, “Don’t weep.” 14 Then he came up and touched the open coffin, and the pallbearers stopped. And he said, “Young man, I tell you, get up!”(F)
15 The dead man sat up and began to speak, and Jesus gave him to his mother.(G) 16 Then fear[b] came over everyone,(H) and they glorified God,(I) saying, “A great prophet has risen among us,”(J) and “God has visited[c] his people.”(K) 17 This report about him went throughout Judea and all the vicinity.
In Praise of John the Baptist
18 Then John’s disciples told him about all these things.(L) So John summoned two of his disciples 19 and sent them to the Lord, asking, “Are you the one(M) who is to come, or should we expect someone else?”
20 When the men reached him, they said, “John the Baptist sent us to ask you, ‘Are you the one who is to come, or should we expect someone else?’”
21 At that time Jesus healed many people of diseases,(N) afflictions, and evil spirits,(O) and he granted sight to many blind people.(P) 22 He replied to them, “Go and report to John what you have seen and heard: The blind receive their sight, the lame walk, those with leprosy[d] are cleansed, the deaf hear,(Q) the dead are raised, and the poor are told the good news,(R) 23 and blessed is the one who isn’t offended by me.”
24 After John’s messengers left, he began to speak to the crowds about John: “What did you go out into the wilderness to see? A reed swaying in the wind? 25 What then did you go out to see? A man dressed in soft clothes? See, those who are splendidly dressed and live in luxury are in royal palaces. 26 What then did you go out to see? A prophet?(S) Yes, I tell you, and more than a prophet. 27 This is the one about whom it is written:
28 I tell you, among those born of women no one is greater than John,[f] but the least in the kingdom of God is greater than he.”
29 (And when all the people, including the tax collectors, heard this, they acknowledged God’s way of righteousness, because they had been baptized with John’s baptism.(U) 30 But since the Pharisees and experts in the law(V) had not been baptized by him, they rejected the plan of God for themselves.(W))
An Unresponsive Generation
31 “To what then should I compare the people of this generation, and what are they like? 32 They are like children sitting in the marketplace and calling to each other:
We played the flute for you,
but you didn’t dance;
we sang a lament,
but you didn’t weep!
33 For John the Baptist did not come eating bread or drinking wine,(X) and you say, ‘He has a demon!’ 34 The Son of Man has come eating and drinking, and you say, ‘Look, a glutton and a drunkard, a friend of tax collectors and sinners!’(Y) 35 Yet wisdom is vindicated by all her children.”
Much Forgiveness, Much Love
36 Then one of the Pharisees invited him to eat with him. He entered the Pharisee’s house and reclined at the table.(Z) 37 And a woman in the town who was a sinner found out that Jesus was reclining at the table in the Pharisee’s house.(AA) She brought an alabaster jar of perfume 38 and stood behind him at his feet, weeping, and began to wash his feet with her tears. She wiped his feet with her hair, kissing them and anointing them with the perfume.(AB)
39 When the Pharisee who had invited him saw this, he said to himself, “This man, if he were a prophet, would know who and what kind of woman this is who is touching him—she’s a sinner!” (AC)
40 Jesus replied to him, “Simon, I have something to say to you.”
He said, “Say it, teacher.”
41 “A creditor had two debtors. One owed five hundred denarii,[g](AD) and the other fifty. 42 Since they could not pay it back,(AE) he graciously forgave them both. So, which of them will love him more?”
43 Simon answered, “I suppose the one he forgave more.”
“You have judged correctly,” he told him. 44 Turning to the woman, he said to Simon, “Do you see this woman? I entered your house; you gave me no water for my feet,(AF) but she, with her tears, has washed my feet and wiped them with her hair. 45 You gave me no kiss,(AG) but she hasn’t stopped kissing my feet since I came in. 46 You didn’t anoint my head with olive oil,(AH) but she has anointed my feet with perfume. 47 Therefore I tell you, her many sins have been forgiven; that’s why she loved much. But the one who is forgiven little, loves little.” 48 Then he said to her, “Your sins are forgiven.”(AI)
49 Those who were at the table with him began to say among themselves, “Who is this man who even forgives sins?” (AJ)

Jesus Heals a Centurion’s Servant(A)
7 Now when He concluded all His sayings in the hearing of the people, He (B)entered Capernaum. 2 And a certain centurion’s servant, who was dear to him, was sick and ready to die. 3 So when he heard about Jesus, he sent elders of the Jews to Him, pleading with Him to come and heal his servant. 4 And when they came to Jesus, they begged Him earnestly, saying that the one for whom He should do this was deserving, 5 “for he loves our nation, and has built us a synagogue.”
6 Then Jesus went with them. And when He was already not far from the house, the centurion sent friends to Him, saying to Him, “Lord, do not trouble Yourself, for I am not worthy that You should enter under my roof. 7 Therefore I did not even think myself worthy to come to You. But (C)say the word, and my servant will be healed. 8 For I also am a man placed under (D)authority, having soldiers under me. Jesus Raises the Son of the Widow of Nain
11 Now it happened, the day after, that He went into a city called Nain; and many of His disciples went with Him, and a large crowd. 12 And when He came near the gate of the city, behold, a dead man was being carried out, the only son of his mother; and she was a widow. And a large crowd from the city was with her. 13 When the Lord saw her, He had (E)compassion on her and said to her, (F)“Do not weep.” 14 Then He came and touched the open coffin, and those who carried him stood still. And He said, “Young man, I say to you, (G)arise.” 15 So he who was dead (H)sat up and began to speak. And He (I)presented him to his mother.
16 (J)Then fear [b]came upon all, and they (K)glorified God, saying, (L)“A great prophet has risen up among us”; and, (M)“God has visited His people.” 17 And this report about Him went throughout all Judea and all the surrounding region.
John the Baptist Sends Messengers to Jesus(N)
18 (O)Then the disciples of John reported to him concerning all these things. 19 And John, calling two of his disciples to him, sent them to [c]Jesus, saying, “Are You (P)the Coming One, or [d]do we look for another?”
20 When the men had come to Him, they said, “John the Baptist has sent us to You, saying, ‘Are You the Coming One, or do we look for another?’ ” 21 And that very hour He cured many of [e]infirmities, afflictions, and evil spirits; and to many blind He gave sight.
22 (Q)Jesus answered and said to them, “Go and tell John the things you have seen and heard: (R)that the blind (S)see, the lame (T)walk, the lepers are (U)cleansed, the deaf (V)hear, the dead are raised, (W)the poor have the gospel preached to them. 23 And blessed is he who is not [f]offended because of Me.”
24 (X)When the messengers of John had departed, He began to speak to the multitudes concerning John: “What did you go out into the wilderness to see? A reed shaken by the wind? 25 But what did you go out to see? A man clothed in soft garments? Indeed those who are gorgeously appareled and live in luxury are in kings’ courts. 26 But what did you go out to see? A prophet? Yes, I say to you, and more than a prophet. 27 This is he of whom it is written:
(Y)‘Behold, I send My messenger before Your face,
Who will prepare Your way before You.’
28 For I say to you, among those born of women there is [g]not a (Z)greater prophet than John the Baptist; but he who is least in the kingdom of God is greater than he.”
29 And when all the people heard Him, even the tax collectors [h]justified God, (AA)having been baptized with the baptism of John. 30 But the Pharisees and [i]lawyers rejected (AB)the will of God for themselves, not having been baptized by him.
31 [j]And the Lord said, (AC)“To what then shall I liken the men of this generation, and what are they like? 32 They are like children sitting in the marketplace and calling to one another, saying:

We mourned to you,

A Sinful Woman Forgiven
36 (AH)Then one of the Pharisees asked Him to eat with him. And He went to the Pharisee’s house, and sat down to eat. 37 And behold, a woman in the city who was a sinner, when she knew that Jesus sat at the table in the Pharisee’s house, brought an alabaster flask of fragrant oil, 38 and stood at His feet behind Him weeping; and she began to wash His feet with her tears, and wiped them with the hair of her head; and she kissed His feet and anointed them with the fragrant oil. 39 Now when the Pharisee who had invited Him saw this, he spoke to himself, saying, (AI)“This Man, if He were a prophet, would know who and what manner of woman this is who is touching Him, for she is a sinner.”
40 And Jesus answered and said to him, “Simon, I have something to say to you.”
So he said, “Teacher, say it.”
41 “There was a certain creditor who had two debtors. One owed five hundred (AJ)denarii, and the other fifty. 42 And when they had nothing with which to repay, he freely forgave them both. Tell Me, therefore, which of them will love him more?”
43 Simon answered and said, “I suppose the one whom he forgave more.”
And He said to him, “You have rightly judged.” 44 Then He turned to the woman and said to Simon, “Do you see this woman? I entered your house; you gave Me no (AK)water for My feet, but she has washed My feet with her tears and wiped them with the hair of her head. 45 You gave Me no (AL)kiss, but this woman has not ceased to kiss My feet since the time I came in. 46 (AM)You did not anoint My head with oil, but this woman has anointed My feet with fragrant oil. 47 (AN)Therefore I say to you, her sins, which are many, are forgiven, for she loved much. Người mẹ, là một bà góa, vừa mất đứa con trai một. Người từ thành ấy đưa xác rất đông cùng với bà mẹ, trong khi người ta đang khiêng quan tài cậu ra. 13 Nhìn thấy bà, Chúa động lòng thương. Ngài bảo, “Bà đừng khóc nữa.” 14 Ngài bước đến rờ nắp quan tài, thì những người khiêng dừng lại. Chúa Giê-xu gọi, “Cậu em ơi, ta bảo cậu hãy ngồi dậy!” 15 Cậu liền ngồi nhỏm dậy và bắt đầu nói chuyện. Chúa Giê-xu liền giao cậu lại cho bà mẹ.
16 Toàn thể dân chúng vô cùng kinh ngạc và bắt đầu ca ngợi Thượng Đế. Họ nói, “Có một đấng tiên tri lớn đã xuất hiện giữa chúng ta! Thượng Đế đã đến viếng thăm dân Ngài.”

36 Có một người Pha-ri-xi mời Chúa Giê-xu dùng bữa tại nhà, nên Ngài đi đến nhà ông và ngồi ở bàn. 37 Một người đàn bà tội lỗi trong tỉnh nghe tin Chúa Giê-xu đang dùng bữa ở nhà người Pha-ri-xi, thì chị liền mang một bình bằng ngọc đầy nước hoa 38 đến, đứng đàng sau nơi chân Chúa Giê-xu khóc nức nở. Chị lấy nước mắt rửa chân Chúa Giê-xu rồi lấy tóc mình mà lau và hôn chân Ngài nhiều lần, đồng thời xức nước hoa nơi chân Ngài. 39 Khi người Pha-ri-xi, là người mời Ngài đến nhà, thấy vậy mới thầm nghĩ, “Nếu ông Giê-xu nầy thật là nhà tiên tri, thì hẳn ông ta phải biết rằng người đàn bà đang đụng đến mình là người xấu xa!”
40 Chúa Giê-xu bảo người Pha-ri-xi, “Xi-môn, tôi có chuyện muốn nói với ông.”
Xi-môn thưa, “Thưa thầy, xin cứ nói.”
41 Chúa Giê-xu nói, “Có hai người mắc nợ một chủ cho vay tiền. Một người thiếu năm trăm quan tiền, người kia thiếu năm chục. 42 Vì họ không có tiền trả, nên chủ cho vay tha nợ cho cả hai. Thế thì người nào yêu chủ nợ hơn?”
43 Xi-môn, người Pha-ri-xi đáp, “Tôi nghĩ người mắc nợ nhiều hơn.”
Chúa Giê-xu nói với Xi-môn, “Ông nói rất đúng.”
44 Quay sang phía thiếu phụ, Chúa Giê-xu bảo Xi-môn, “Ông có thấy chị nầy không? Khi tôi vào nhà ông, ông không thèm mang nước cho tôi rửa chân, còn chị nầy đã rửa chân tôi bằng nước mắt và lấy tóc mình mà lau. 45 Ông không chào đón tôi bằng cái hôn, nhưng từ khi tôi vào, chị hôn chân tôi hoài. 46 Ông không xức dầu trên đầu tôi nhưng chị nầy đã đổ nước hoa xức chân tôi. 47 Tôi bảo ông rằng chị nầy tuy có tội nhiều lắm nhưng được tha thứ hết nên chị tỏ tình thương nhiều. Còn người được tha ít thì yêu ít.”
48 Rồi Ngài nói với chị, “Tội chị đã được tha rồi.”
49 Những người ngồi cùng bàn bắt đầu hỏi nhau, “Ông nầy là ai mà cũng tha tội?”
50 Chúa Giê-xu bảo thiếu phụ, “Vì chị có lòng tin, nên chị đã được cứu khỏi tội. Thôi chị hãy yên tâm mà về.”
