Jesus Heals an Army Officer's Servant

(Matthew 8.5-13; John 4.43-54)

After Jesus had finished teaching the people, he went to Capernaum. In this town an army officer's servant was sick and about to die. The officer liked his servant very much. And when he heard about Jesus, he sent some Jewish leaders to ask him to come and heal the servant.

The leaders went to Jesus and begged him to do something. They said, “This man deserves your help! He loves our nation and even built us a synagogue.” So Jesus went with them.

When Jesus wasn't far from the house, the officer sent some friends to tell him, “Lord, don't go to any trouble for me! I am not good enough for you to come into my house. And I am certainly not worthy to come to you. Just say the word, and my servant will get well. I have officers who give orders to me, and I have soldiers who take orders from me. I can say to one of them, ‘Go!’ and he goes. I can say to another, ‘Come!’ and he comes. I can say to my servant, ‘Do this!’ and he will do it.”

When Jesus heard this, he was so surprised that he turned and said to the crowd following him, “In all of Israel I've never found anyone with this much faith!”

10 The officer's friends returned and found the servant well.

A Widow's Son

11 Soon Jesus and his disciples were on their way to the town of Nain, and a big crowd was going along with them. 12 As they came near the gate of the town, they saw people carrying out the body of a widow's only son. Many people from the town were walking along with her.

13 When the Lord saw the woman, he felt sorry for her and said, “Don't cry!”

14 Jesus went over and touched the stretcher on which the people were carrying the dead boy. They stopped, and Jesus said, “Young man, get up!” 15 The boy sat up and began to speak. Jesus then gave him back to his mother.

16 Everyone was frightened and praised God. They said, “A great prophet is here with us! God has come to his people.”

17 News about Jesus spread all over Judea and everywhere else in that part of the country.

John the Baptist

(Matthew 11.1-19)

18-19 John's followers told John everything that was being said about Jesus. So he sent two of them to ask the Lord, “Are you the one we should be looking for? Or must we wait for someone else?”

20 When these messengers came to Jesus, they said, “John the Baptist sent us to ask, ‘Are you the one we should be looking for? Or are we supposed to wait for someone else?’ ”

21 At that time Jesus was healing many people who were sick or in pain or were troubled by evil spirits, and he was giving sight to a lot of blind people. 22 (A) Jesus said to the messengers sent by John, “Go and tell John what you have seen and heard. Blind people are now able to see, and the lame can walk. People who have leprosy[a] are being healed, and the deaf can now hear. The dead are raised to life, and the poor are hearing the good news. 23 God will bless everyone who doesn't reject me because of what I do.”

24 After John's messengers had gone, Jesus began speaking to the crowds about John:

What kind of person did you go out to the desert to see? Was he like tall grass blown about by the wind? 25 What kind of man did you really go out to see? Was he someone dressed in fine clothes? People who wear expensive clothes and live in luxury are in the king's palace. 26 What then did you go out to see? Was he a prophet? He certainly was! I tell you that he was more than a prophet. 27 (B) In the Scriptures, God calls John his messenger and says, “I am sending my messenger ahead of you to get things ready for you.” 28 No one ever born on this earth is greater than John. But whoever is least important in God's kingdom is greater than John.

29 (C) Everyone had been listening to John. Even the tax collectors[b] had obeyed God and had done what was right by letting John baptize them. 30 But the Pharisees and the experts in the Law of Moses refused to obey God and be baptized by John.

31 Jesus went on to say:

What are you people like? What kind of people are you? 32 You are like children sitting in the market and shouting to each other,

“We played the flute,
    but you would not dance!
We sang a funeral song,
    but you would not cry!”

33 John the Baptist did not go around eating and drinking, and you said, “John has a demon in him!” 34 But because the Son of Man goes around eating and drinking, you say, “Jesus eats and drinks too much! He is even a friend of tax collectors and sinners.” 35 Yet Wisdom is shown to be right by what its followers do.

Simon the Pharisee

36 A Pharisee invited Jesus to have dinner with him. So Jesus went to the Pharisee's home and got ready to eat.[c]

37 (D) When a sinful woman in that town found out that Jesus was there, she bought an expensive bottle of perfume. 38 Then she came and stood behind Jesus. She cried and started washing his feet with her tears and drying them with her hair. The woman kissed his feet and poured the perfume on them.

39 The Pharisee who had invited Jesus saw this and said to himself, “If this man really were a prophet, he would know what kind of woman is touching him! He would know that she is a sinner.”

40 Jesus said to the Pharisee, “Simon, I have something to say to you.”

“Teacher, what is it?” Simon replied.

41 Jesus told him, “Two people were in debt to a moneylender. One of them owed him 500 silver coins, and the other owed him 50. 42 Since neither of them could pay him back, the moneylender said that they didn't have to pay him anything. Which one of them will like him more?”

43 Simon answered, “I suppose it would be the one who had owed more and didn't have to pay it back.”

“You are right,” Jesus said.

44 He turned toward the woman and said to Simon, “Have you noticed this woman? When I came into your home, you didn't give me any water so I could wash my feet. But she has washed my feet with her tears and dried them with her hair. 45 You didn't greet me with a kiss, but from the time I came in, she has not stopped kissing my feet. 46 You didn't even pour olive oil on my head,[d] but she has poured expensive perfume on my feet. 47 So I tell you that all her sins are forgiven, and that is why she has shown great love. But anyone who has been forgiven for only a little will show only a little love.”

48 Then Jesus said to the woman, “Your sins are forgiven.”

49 Some other guests started saying to one another, “Who is this who dares to forgive sins?”

50 But Jesus told the woman, “Because of your faith, you are now saved.[e] May God give you peace!”

Jesus Heals a Centurion’s Servant From Afar By Speaking The Word

After He completed all His words in the hearing of the people, He entered into Capernaum. And a certain centurion’s[a] slave, who was precious[b] to him, being ill, was about to come-to-an-end[c]. But having heard about Jesus, he sent-forth elders of the Jews to Him, asking Him so that having come, He might restore his slave. And the ones having come to Jesus were appealing-to Him earnestly, saying that “He for whom You will grant this is worthy. For he loves our nation, and he built the synagogue for us”. Now Jesus was proceeding with them. And He already being not far distant from the house, the centurion sent friends, saying to Him, “Master, do not be troubling Yourself. For I am not fit that You should come in under my roof. For this reason I did not even consider myself worthy to come to You. But speak it in a word[d], and let my servant be healed. For I also am a man being placed under authority, having soldiers under myself. And I say to this one, ‘Go!’, and he goes; and to another, ‘Come!’, and he comes; and to my slave, ‘Do this!’, and he does it”. And having heard these things, Jesus marveled-at him. And having turned to the crowd following Him, He said, “I say to you, not even in Israel did I find so great a faith”. 10 And having returned to the house, the ones having been sent found the slave being healthy.

Jesus Raises a Woman’s Only Son From The Dead

11 And it came about afterwards[e] that He proceeded to a city being called Nain. And His disciples and a large crowd were proceeding-with Him. 12 Now when He drew-near to the gate of the city, and behold— one having died was being carried out, an only-born son to his mother. And she was a widow. And a considerable crowd from the city was with her. 13 And having seen her, the Lord felt-deep-feelings [of compassion] for her. And He said to her, “Do not be weeping”. 14 And having come to it, He touched the funeral-bed. And the ones bearing it stopped. And He said, “Young-man, I say to you, arise!” 15 And the dead one sat up and began to speak. And He gave him to his mother. 16 And awe seized everyone. And they were glorifying God, saying that “A great prophet arose among us”, and that “God visited His people”. 17 And this statement concerning Him went out in all Judea and in all the surrounding-region.

John The Baptist Asks, Are You The One? Jesus Points Him To His Miraculous Works

18 And his disciples reported to John about all these things. And having summoned a certain two of his disciples, John 19 sent them to the Lord, saying, “Are You the One coming, or should we be looking-for another one?” 20 And having come to Him, the men said, “John the Baptist sent us forth to You, saying, ‘Are You the One coming[f], or should we be looking for another one?’” 21 At that hour, He cured many from diseases and scourges and evil spirits. And He granted seeing to many blind ones. 22 And having responded, He said to them, “Having gone, report to John the things which you saw[g] and heard— blind ones are seeing-again, lame ones are walking, lepers are being cleansed. And deaf ones are hearing, dead ones are being raised, poor ones are having-good-news-announced[h] to them. 23 And blessed is whoever does not take-offense[i] in Me”.

John Is The One Preparing The Way For The Messiah In Fulfillment of Malachi

24 And the messengers of John having departed, He began to speak to the crowds about John. “What[j] did you go out into the wilderness to look-at? A reed being shaken by the wind? 25 But what did you go out to see? A man having been dressed in soft garments? Behold— the ones being[k] in glorious[l] clothing and luxury are in the royal palaces! 26 But what did you go out to see? A prophet? Yes, I say to you, and more than a prophet. 27 This one is about whom it has been written [in Mal 3:1]: ‘Behold— I am sending forth My messenger ahead of Your presence[m], who will make Your way ready in front of You’. 28 I say to you— no one is greater[n] among ones born of women than John. But the least one in the kingdom of God is greater than he. 29 And all the people having heard him[o], even the tax collectors, vindicated[p] God, having been baptized with the baptism of John. 30 But the Pharisees and the Law-experts rejected the purpose of God for themselves, not having been baptized by him.

But This Generation Rejects Both The One Preparing And He Who Came

31 To what then will I liken the people of this generation, and to what are they like? 32 They are like children sitting in the marketplace and calling to one another, who say ‘We played the flute for you and you did not dance. We lamented[q] and you did not weep’. 33 For John the Baptist has come not eating bread nor drinking wine, and you say ‘He has a demon’. 34 The Son of Man has come eating and drinking, and you say ‘Behold— a man who is a glutton and drunkard[r], a friend of tax-collectors and sinners’. 35 And wisdom was vindicated[s] by all her children”.

Jesus Is Anointed By a Sinful Woman. A Pharisee Objects

36 And one of the Pharisees was asking Him to eat with him. And having entered into the house of the Pharisee, He laid-down [to eat]. 37 And behold— there was a woman in the city who was a sinner. And having learned that He is reclining [to eat] at the house of the Pharisee, having brought an alabaster-jar of perfume[t], 38 and having stood behind Him at His feet weeping— she began to wet His feet with the tears, and was wiping them with the hair of her head. And she was kissing His feet, and anointing them with the perfume. 39 And having seen it, the Pharisee having invited Him spoke within himself, saying, “If this One were a prophet, He would know who and what-kind-of person the woman is who is touching Him— that she is a sinner”.

The One Forgiven Much Loves Much. Jesus Forgives Her Sins

40 And having responded, Jesus said to him, “Simon, I have something to speak to you”. And the one says, “Teacher, speak”. 41 “There were two debtors to a certain lender. The one was owing five-hundred denarii[u], and the other, fifty. 42 They not having the means to pay, he forgave both. So which of them will love him more?” 43 And having responded, Simon said, “I assume that it is to whom he forgave the more”. And the One said to him, “You judged correctly”. 44 And having turned toward the woman, He said to Simon, “Do you see this woman? I entered into your house— You did not give Me water for My feet. But this one wet My feet with her tears and wiped them with her hair. 45 You did not give Me a kiss. But this one did not stop kissing My feet from which hour I came-in. 46 You did not anoint My head with oil. But this one anointed My feet with perfume. 47 For which reason I say to you— her many sins have been forgiven, because she loved much. But he to whom little is forgiven, loves little”. 48 And He said to her, “Your sins have been forgiven”. 49 And the ones reclining-back-with Him [to eat] began to say among themselves, “Who is this One, Who even forgives sins?” 50 And He said to the woman, “Your faith has saved you. Go in peace”.

So when he[c] heard about Jesus, he sent Jewish elders to him, asking him that he would come and[d] cure his slave. And when they[e] came to Jesus, they began imploring[f] him earnestly, saying, “He is worthy that you grant this for him, because he loves our nation and he himself built the synagogue for us.” So Jesus went with them. Now by this time he was not far away from the house, and[g] the centurion sent friends, saying to him, “Lord, do not trouble yourself, for I am not worthy that you should come in under my roof. For this reason neither did I consider myself worthy to come to you. But say the word and my slave must be healed. For I also am a man placed under authority, who has soldiers under me, and I say to this one, ‘Go!’ and he goes, and to another one, ‘Come!’ and he comes, and to my slave, ‘Do this!’ and he does it.”[h]

And when[i] Jesus heard these things, he marveled at him, and turning around to the crowd that was following him, he said, “I tell you, not even in Israel have I found such great faith!” 10 And when they[j] returned to the house, those who had been sent found the slave healthy.

Behold, those who are in splendid clothing and luxury are in the royal palaces. 26 But what did you go out to see? A prophet? Yes, I tell you, and even more than a prophet! 27 It is this man about whom it is written:

‘Behold, I am sending my messenger before your face,

28 I tell you, there is no one greater among those born of women than John, but the one who is least in the kingdom of God is greater than he. 29 (And all the people, when they[x] heard this[y]—even the tax collectors—affirmed the righteousness of God, because they[z] had been baptized with the baptism of John, 30 but the Pharisees and the legal experts rejected the purpose of God for themselves, because they[aa] had not been baptized by him.)

A Sinful Woman Anoints Jesus’ Feet

36 Now one of the Pharisees asked him to eat with him, and he entered into the house of the Pharisee and[ab] reclined at the table. 37 And behold, a woman in the town who was a sinner, when she[ac] learned that he was dining in the Pharisee’s house, brought an alabaster flask of perfumed oil, 38 and standing behind him at his feet weeping, she began to wet his feet with her tears and was wiping them[ad] with the hair of her head and was kissing his feet and anointing them[ae] with the perfumed oil. 39 Now when[af] the Pharisee who invited him saw this,[ag] he spoke to himself, saying, “If this man were a prophet, he would have known who and what kind of woman this is who is touching him, that she is a sinner.” 40 And Jesus answered and[ah] said to him, “Simon, I have something to say to you.” And he said, “Teacher, say it.”[ai] 41 “There were two debtors who owed a certain creditor. One owed five hundred denarii and the other fifty. 42 When[aj] they were not able to repay him,[ak] he forgave the debts[al] of both. Now which of them will love him more?” 43 Simon answered and[am] said, “I suppose that it is the one to whom he forgave more.” And he said to him, “You have judged correctly.” 44 And turning toward the woman, he said to Simon, “Do you see this woman? The Faith of the Centurion(A)

When Jesus had finished saying all this(B) to the people who were listening, he entered Capernaum. There a centurion’s servant, whom his master valued highly, was sick and about to die. The centurion heard of Jesus and sent some elders of the Jews to him, asking him to come and heal his servant. When they came to Jesus, they pleaded earnestly with him, “This man deserves to have you do this, because he loves our nation and has built our synagogue.” So Jesus went with them.

He was not far from the house when the centurion sent friends to say to him: “Lord, don’t trouble yourself, for I do not deserve to have you come under my roof. That is why I did not even consider myself worthy to come to you. But say the word, and my servant will be healed.(C) For I myself am a man under authority, with soldiers under me. I tell this one, ‘Go,’ and he goes; and that one, ‘Come,’ and he comes. I say to my servant, ‘Do this,’ and he does it.”

When Jesus heard this, he was amazed at him, and turning to the crowd following him, he said, “I tell you, I have not found such great faith even in Israel.” 10 Then the men who had been sent returned to the house and found the servant well.

Jesus Raises a Widow’s Son(D)

11 Soon afterward, Jesus went to a town called Nain, and his disciples and a large crowd went along with him. 12 As he approached the town gate, a dead person was being carried out—the only son of his mother, and she was a widow. And a large crowd from the town was with her. 13 When the Lord(E) saw her, his heart went out to her and he said, “Don’t cry.”

14 Then he went up and touched the bier they were carrying him on, and the bearers stood still. He said, “Young man, I say to you, get up!”(F) 15 The dead man sat up and began to talk, and Jesus gave him back to his mother.

16 They were all filled with awe(G) and praised God.(H) “A great prophet(I) has appeared among us,” they said. “God has come to help his people.”(J) 17 This news about Jesus spread throughout Judea and the surrounding country.(K)

18 John’s(M) disciples(N) told him about all these things. Calling two of them, 19 he sent them to the Lord to ask, “Are you the one who is to come, or should we expect someone else?”

20 When the men came to Jesus, they said, “John the Baptist sent us to you to ask, ‘Are you the one who is to come, or should we expect someone else?’”

21 At that very time Jesus cured many who had diseases, sicknesses(O) and evil spirits, and gave sight to many who were blind. 22 So he replied to the messengers, “Go back and report to John what you have seen and heard: The blind receive sight, the lame walk, those who have leprosy[a] are cleansed, the deaf hear, the dead are raised, and the good news is proclaimed to the poor.(P) 23 Blessed is anyone who does not stumble on account of me.”

24 After John’s messengers left, Jesus began to speak to the crowd about John: “What did you go out into the wilderness to see? A reed swayed by the wind? 25 If not, what did you go out to see? A man dressed in fine clothes? No, those who wear expensive clothes and indulge in luxury are in palaces. 26 But what did you go out to see? A prophet?(Q) Yes, I tell you, and more than a prophet. 27 This is the one about whom it is written:

“‘I will send my messenger ahead of you,
    who will prepare your way before you.’[b](R)

28 I tell you, among those born of women there is no one greater than John; yet the one who is least in the kingdom of God(S) is greater than he.”

29 (All the people, even the tax collectors, when they heard Jesus’ words, acknowledged that God’s way was right, because they had been baptized by John.(T) 30 But the Pharisees and the experts in the law(U) rejected God’s purpose for themselves, because they had not been baptized by John.)

31 Jesus went on to say, “To what, then, can I compare the people of this generation? What are they like? 32 They are like children sitting in the marketplace and calling out to each other:

“‘We played the pipe for you,
    and you did not dance;
we sang a dirge,
    and you did not cry.’

33 For John the Baptist came neither eating bread nor drinking wine,(V) and you say, ‘He has a demon.’ 34 The Son of Man came eating and drinking, and you say, ‘Here is a glutton and a drunkard, a friend of tax collectors and sinners.’(W) 35 But wisdom is proved right by all her children.”

Jesus Anointed by a Sinful Woman(X)(Y)

36 When one of the Pharisees invited Jesus to have dinner with him, he went to the Pharisee’s house and reclined at the table. 37 A woman in that town who lived a sinful life learned that Jesus was eating at the Pharisee’s house, so she came there with an alabaster jar of perfume. 38 As she stood behind him at his feet weeping, she began to wet his feet with her tears. Then she wiped them with her hair, kissed them and poured perfume on them.

39 When the Pharisee who had invited him saw this, he said to himself, “If this man were a prophet,(Z) he would know who is touching him and what kind of woman she is—that she is a sinner.”

40 Jesus answered him, “Simon, I have something to tell you.”

“Tell me, teacher,” he said.

41 “Two people owed money to a certain moneylender. One owed him five hundred denarii,[c] and the other fifty. 42 Neither of them had the money to pay him back, so he forgave the debts of both. Now which of them will love him more?”

43 Simon replied, “I suppose the one who had the bigger debt forgiven.”

“You have judged correctly,” Jesus said.

44 Then he turned toward the woman and said to Simon, “Do you see this woman? I came into your house. You did not give me any water for my feet,(AA) but she wet my feet with her tears and wiped them with her hair. 45 You did not give me a kiss,(AB) but this woman, from the time I entered, has not stopped kissing my feet. 46 You did not put oil on my head,(AC) but she has poured perfume on my feet. 47 Therefore, I tell you, her many sins have been forgiven—as her great love has shown. But whoever has been forgiven little loves little.”

48 Then Jesus said to her, “Your sins are forgiven.”(AD)

49 The other guests began to say among themselves, “Who is this who even forgives sins?”

50 Jesus said to the woman, “Your faith has saved you;(AE) go in peace.”(AF)
