Jesus Heals a Centurion’s Slave
7 After Jesus[a] had finished all his sayings in the hearing of the people, he entered Capernaum.(A) 2 A centurion there had a slave whom he valued highly and who was ill and close to death. 3 When he heard about Jesus, he sent some Jewish elders to him, asking him to come and heal his slave. 4 When they came to Jesus, they appealed to him earnestly, saying, “He is worthy to have you do this for him, 5 for he loves our people, and it is he who built our synagogue for us.” 6 And Jesus went with them, but when he was not far from the house, the centurion sent friends to say to him, “Lord, do not trouble yourself, for I am not worthy to have you come under my roof; 7 therefore I did not presume to come to you. But only speak the word, and let my servant be healed. 8 For I also am a man set under authority, with soldiers under me, and I say to one, ‘Go,’ and he goes, and to another, ‘Come,’ and he comes, and to my slave, ‘Do this,’ and the slave does it.” 9 When Jesus heard this he was amazed at him, and, turning to the crowd following him, he said, “I tell you, not even in Israel have I found such faith.”(B) 10 When those who had been sent returned to the house, they found the slave in good health.
Jesus Raises the Widow’s Son at Nain
11 Soon afterward[b] he went to a town called Nain, and his disciples and a large crowd went with him.(C) 12 As he approached the gate of the town, a man who had died was being carried out. He was his mother’s only son, and she was a widow, and with her was a large crowd from the town. 13 When the Lord saw her, he was moved with compassion for her and said to her, “Do not cry.”(D) 14 Then he came forward and touched the bier, and the bearers stopped. And he said, “Young man, I say to you, rise!”(E) 15 The dead man sat up and began to speak, and Jesus[c] gave him to his mother. 16 Fear seized all of them, and they glorified God, saying, “A great prophet has risen among us!” and “God has visited his people!”(F) 17 This word about him spread throughout the whole of Judea and all the surrounding region.
Messengers from John the Baptist
18 The disciples of John reported all these things to him. So John summoned two of his disciples 19 and sent them to the Lord to ask, “Are you the one who is to come, or are we to expect someone else?” 20 When the men had come to him, they said, “John the Baptist has sent us to you to ask, ‘Are you the one who is to come, or are we to expect someone else?’ ” 21 Jesus[d] had just then cured many people of diseases, afflictions, and evil spirits and had given sight to many who were blind.(G) 22 And he answered them, “Go and tell John what you have seen and heard: the blind receive their sight; the lame walk; those with a skin disease are cleansed; the deaf hear; the dead are raised; the poor have good news brought to them.(H) 23 And blessed is anyone who takes no offense at me.”
24 When John’s messengers had gone, Jesus[e] began to speak to the crowds about John:[f] “What did you go out into the wilderness to look at? A reed shaken by the wind? 25 What, then, did you go out to see? Someone[g] dressed in soft robes? Look, those who put on fine clothing and live in luxury are in royal palaces. 26 What, then, did you go out to see? A prophet? Yes, I tell you, and more than a prophet. 27 This is the one about whom it is written,
‘See, I am sending my messenger ahead of you,
who will prepare your way before you.’
28 “I tell you, among those born of women no one is greater than John, yet the least in the kingdom of God is greater than he.” 29 (And all the people who heard this, including the tax collectors, acknowledged the justice of God,[h] having been baptized with John’s baptism.(I) 30 But the Pharisees and the experts in the law, not having been baptized by him, rejected God’s purpose for themselves.)(J)
31 “To what, then, will I compare the people of this generation, and what are they like? 32 They are like children sitting in the marketplace and calling to one another,
‘We played the flute for you, and you did not dance;
we wailed, and you did not weep.’
33 “For John the Baptist has come eating no bread and drinking no wine, and you say, ‘He has a demon’;(K) 34 the Son of Man has come eating and drinking, and you say, ‘Look, a glutton and a drunkard, a friend of tax collectors and sinners!’(L) 35 Nevertheless, wisdom is vindicated by all her children.”
A Sinful Woman Forgiven
36 One of the Pharisees asked Jesus[i] to eat with him, and when he went into the Pharisee’s house he reclined to dine.(M) 37 And a woman in the city who was a sinner, having learned that he was eating in the Pharisee’s house, brought an alabaster jar of ointment. 38 She stood behind him at his feet, weeping, and began to bathe his feet with her tears and to dry them with her hair, kissing his feet and anointing them with the ointment. 39 Now when the Pharisee who had invited him saw it, he said to himself, “If this man were a prophet, he would have known who and what kind of woman this is who is touching him, that she is a sinner.”(N) 40 Jesus spoke up and said to him, “Simon, I have something to say to you.” “Teacher,” he replied, “speak.” 41 “A certain moneylender had two debtors; one owed five hundred denarii, and the other fifty.(O) 42 When they could not pay, he canceled the debts for both of them. Now which of them will love him more?” 43 Simon answered, “I suppose the one for whom he canceled the greater debt.” And Jesus[j] said to him, “You have judged rightly.” 44 Then turning toward the woman, he said to Simon, “Do you see this woman? I entered your house; you gave me no water for my feet, but she has bathed my feet with her tears and dried them with her hair.(P) 45 You gave me no kiss, but from the time I came in she has not stopped kissing my feet. 46 You did not anoint my head with oil, but she has anointed my feet with ointment.(Q) 47 Therefore, I tell you, her many sins have been forgiven; hence she has shown great love. But the one to whom little is forgiven loves little.” 48 Then he said to her, “Your sins are forgiven.”(R) 49 But those who were at the table with him began to say among themselves, “Who is this who even forgives sins?” 50 But he said to the woman, “Your faith has saved you; go in peace.”(S)

7 耶穌向群眾講完這一切話，就進了迦百農。 2 有百夫長所重用的一個奴僕，病得快要死了。 3 百夫長聽見耶穌的事，就打發猶太人中幾個長老到他那裡，求他去醫治他的奴僕。 4 長老們就來見耶穌，懇切地求他說：“你給他行這事，是他配得的， 5 因為他愛我們的人民，給我們建造會堂。” 6 耶穌就和他們同去。離那家不遠的時候，百夫長派幾個朋友來說：“主啊，不必勞駕，因為你到舍下來，我實在不敢當， 7 我也覺得沒有資格去見你；只要你說一句話，我的僕人就必好了。 8 因為我自己是在別人的權下，也有兵在我以下；我對這個說：‘去！’他就去；對另一個說：‘來！’他就來；對我的僕人說：‘作這個！’他就作。” 9 耶穌聽見這些話，就很驚奇，轉身對跟隨的眾人說：“我告訴你們，這樣的信心，我在以色列中從來沒有見過。” 10 奉派的人回到家裡，見那奴僕已經好了。
使拿因城寡婦的兒子復活
11 後來耶穌往拿因城去，與他同去的有門徒和一大群人。 12 他走近城門的時候，有人把一個死人抬出來，是個獨生子，他母親又是個寡婦。城裡有一大群人陪著她。 13 主看見了，就憐憫她，對她說：“不要哭！” 14 於是上前按著槓子，抬的人就站住。他說：“青年人，我吩咐你起來！” 15 那死人就坐起來，開口說話，耶穌就把他交給他母親。 16 眾人都驚懼，頌讚 神說：“有偉大的先知在我們中間興起來了！”又說：“ 神眷顧他的子民了！” 17 於是這話傳遍了猶太和周圍各地。

36 有一個法利賽人，請耶穌同他吃飯，他就到法利賽人家去赴席。 37 那城裡有一個女人，是個罪人，知道他在法利賽人家裡吃飯，就拿著一瓶香膏， 38 站在耶穌背後，挨近他的腳哭，眼淚滴濕他的腳，又用自己的頭髮擦乾，不住地吻他的腳，並且抹上香膏。 39 請他的法利賽人看見了，心裡說：“這人若是先知，必定知道摸他的是誰，是怎樣的女人，因為她是個罪人！” 40 耶穌對他說：“西門，我有句話要對你說。”他說：“老師，請說。” 41 耶穌說：“一個債主有兩個債戶，一個欠五百銀幣，一個欠五十。 42 他們都無力償還，債主就把兩人豁免了。他們之中哪一個更愛他呢？” 43 西門回答：“我想是那個多得恩免的。”耶穌說：“你判斷對了。” 44 於是轉身向著那女人，對西門說：“你看見這女人嗎？我進了你的家，你沒有給我水洗腳，但這女人用眼淚濕了我的腳，用頭髮擦乾。 45 你沒有和我親吻；但這女人，自從我進來，就不住地親我的腳。 46 你沒有用油抹我的頭；但這女人用香膏抹我的腳。 47 所以我告訴你，她許多罪都蒙赦免了，因為她的愛多；那赦免少的，愛就少。” 48 耶穌就對她說：“你的罪赦免了。” 49 跟他一起吃飯的人心裡說：“這是誰，竟然赦罪呢？” 50 耶穌對那女人說：“你的信救了你，平安地去吧！”

7 Now when he had ended all his sayings in the audience of the people, he entered into Capernaum.
2 And a certain centurion's servant, who was dear unto him, was sick, and ready to die.
3 And when he heard of Jesus, he sent unto him the elders of the Jews, beseeching him that he would come and heal his servant.
4 And when they came to Jesus, they besought him instantly, saying, That he was worthy for whom he should do this:
5 For he loveth our nation, and he hath built us a synagogue.
6 Then Jesus went with them. And when he was now not far from the house, the centurion sent friends to him, saying unto him, Lord, trouble not thyself: for I am not worthy that thou shouldest enter under my roof:
7 Wherefore neither thought I myself worthy to come unto thee: but say in a word, and my servant shall be healed.
8 For I also am a man set under authority, having under me soldiers, and I say unto one, Go, and he goeth; and to another, Come, and he cometh; and to my servant, Do this, and he doeth it.
9 When Jesus heard these things, he marvelled at him, and turned him about, and said unto the people that followed him, I say unto you, I have not found so great faith, no, not in Israel.

12 Now when he came nigh to the gate of the city, behold, there was a dead man carried out, the only son of his mother, and she was a widow: and much people of the city was with her.
13 And when the Lord saw her, he had compassion on her, and said unto her, Weep not.

21 And in that same hour he cured many of their infirmities and plagues, and of evil spirits; and unto many that were blind he gave sight.
22 Then Jesus answering said unto them, Go your way, and tell John what things ye have seen and heard; how that the blind see, the lame walk, the lepers are cleansed, the deaf hear, the dead are raised, to the poor the gospel is preached.
23 And blessed is he, whosoever shall not be offended in me.
24 And when the messengers of John were departed, he began to speak unto the people concerning John, What went ye out into the wilderness for to see? A reed shaken with the wind?
25 But what went ye out for to see? A man clothed in soft raiment? Behold, they which are gorgeously apparelled, and live delicately, are in kings' courts.
26 But what went ye out for to see? A prophet? Yea, I say unto you, and much more than a prophet.
27 This is he, of whom it is written, Behold, I send my messenger before thy face, which shall prepare thy way before thee.
28 For I say unto you, Among those that are born of women there is not a greater prophet than John the Baptist: but he that is least in the kingdom of God is greater than he.
29 And all the people that heard him, and the publicans, justified God, being baptized with the baptism of John.
30 But the Pharisees and lawyers rejected the counsel of God against themselves, being not baptized of him.
31 And the Lord said, Whereunto then shall I liken the men of this generation? and to what are they like?
32 They are like unto children sitting in the marketplace, and calling one to another, and saying, We have piped unto you, and ye have not danced; we have mourned to you, and ye have not wept.
33 For John the Baptist came neither eating bread nor drinking wine; and ye say, He hath a devil.
34 The Son of man is come eating and drinking; and ye say, Behold a gluttonous man, and a winebibber, a friend of publicans and sinners!
35 But wisdom is justified of all her children.
36 And one of the Pharisees desired him that he would eat with him. And he went into the Pharisee's house, and sat down to meat.
37 And, behold, a woman in the city, which was a sinner, when she knew that Jesus sat at meat in the Pharisee's house, brought an alabaster box of ointment,

41 There was a certain creditor which had two debtors: the one owed five hundred pence, and the other fifty.
42 And when they had nothing to pay, he frankly forgave them both. Tell me therefore, which of them will love him most?
43 Simon answered and said, I suppose that he, to whom he forgave most. And he said unto him, Thou hast rightly judged.
44 And he turned to the woman, and said unto Simon, Seest thou this woman? I entered into thine house, thou gavest me no water for my feet: but she hath washed my feet with tears, and wiped them with the hairs of her head.
45 Thou gavest me no kiss: but this woman since the time I came in hath not ceased to kiss my feet.
46 My head with oil thou didst not anoint: but this woman hath anointed my feet with ointment.
47 Wherefore I say unto thee, Her sins, which are many, are forgiven; for she loved much: but to whom little is forgiven, the same loveth little.
48 And he said unto her, Thy sins are forgiven.

Der Hauptmann von Kapernaum
7 Nachdem er aber vor den Ohren des Volkes alle seine Reden beendet hatte, ging er hinein nach Kapernaum.
2 Und ein Knecht eines Hauptmanns, den jener schätzte, lag krank und war am Sterben.
3 Als er aber von Jesus hörte, sandte er Älteste der Juden zu ihm mit der Bitte, er möge kommen und seinen Knecht retten.
4 Als diese zu Jesus kamen, baten sie ihn eindringlich und sprachen: Er ist es wert, dass du ihm dies gewährst;
5 denn er hat unser Volk lieb, und er hat uns die Synagoge erbaut.
6 Da ging Jesus mit ihnen hin. Und als er schon nicht mehr fern von dem Haus war, schickte der Hauptmann Freunde zu ihm und ließ ihm sagen: Herr, bemühe dich nicht; denn ich bin nicht wert, dass du unter mein Dach kommst!
7 Darum hielt ich auch mich selbst nicht für würdig, zu dir zu kommen; sondern sprich nur ein Wort, so wird mein Knecht gesund!
8 Denn auch ich bin ein Mensch, der unter Vorgesetzten steht, und habe Kriegsknechte unter mir; und wenn ich zu diesem sage: Geh hin!, so geht er; und zu einem anderen: Komm her!, so kommt er; und zu meinem Knecht: Tu das!, so tut er"s.
9 Als Jesus das hörte, verwunderte er sich über ihn und wandte sich um und sprach zu der Menge, die ihm nachfolgte: Ich sage euch: Einen so großen Glauben habe ich in Israel nicht gefunden!
10 Und als die Abgesandten in das Haus zurückkamen, fanden sie den kranken Knecht gesund.
Die Auferweckung des Jünglings von Nain
11 Und es begab sich am folgenden Tag, dass er in eine Stadt namens Nain ging, und mit ihm zogen viele seiner Jünger und eine große Volksmenge.
12 Wie er sich aber dem Stadttor näherte, siehe, da wurde ein Toter herausgetragen, der einzige Sohn seiner Mutter, und sie war eine Witwe; und viele Leute aus der Stadt begleiteten sie.
13 Und als der Herr sie sah, erbarmte er sich über sie und sprach zu ihr: Weine nicht!
14 Und er trat hinzu und rührte den Sarg an; die Träger aber standen still. Und er sprach: Junger Mann, ich sage dir: Steh auf!
15 Und der Tote setzte sich auf und fing an zu reden; und er gab ihn seiner Mutter.
16 Da wurden sie alle von Furcht ergriffen und priesen Gott und sprachen: Ein großer Prophet ist unter uns aufgestanden, und: Gott hat sein Volk heimgesucht!
17 Und diese Rede über ihn verbreitete sich in ganz Judäa und in der ganzen Umgegend.
Jesus und Johannes der Täufer
18 Und die Jünger des Johannes berichteten ihm von dem allem.
19 Und Johannes rief zwei seiner Jünger zu sich, sandte sie zu Jesus und ließ ihn fragen: Bist du derjenige, der kommen soll,[a] oder sollen wir auf einen anderen warten?
20 Als nun die Männer zu ihm kamen, sprachen sie: Johannes der Täufer hat uns zu dir gesandt und lässt dich fragen: Bist du es, der kommen soll, oder sollen wir auf einen anderen warten?
21 Zu derselben Stunde aber heilte er viele von Krankheiten und Plagen und bösen Geistern und schenkte vielen Blinden das Augenlicht.
22 Und Jesus antwortete und sprach zu ihnen: Geht hin und berichtet dem Johannes, was ihr gesehen und gehört habt: Blinde werden sehend, Lahme gehen, Aussätzige werden rein, Taube hören, Tote werden auferweckt, Armen wird das Evangelium verkündigt.
23 Und glückselig ist, wer nicht Anstoß nimmt an mir!
24 Und als die Boten des Johannes weggegangen waren, fing er an, zu der Volksmenge über Johannes zu reden: Was seid ihr in die Wüste hinausgegangen zu sehen? Ein Rohr, das vom Wind bewegt wird?
25 Oder was seid ihr hinausgegangen zu sehen? Einen Menschen, mit weichen Kleidern bekleidet? Siehe, die in herrlicher Kleidung und Üppigkeit leben, sind an den Königshöfen!
26 Oder was seid ihr hinausgegangen zu sehen? Einen Propheten? Ja, ich sage euch: einen, der mehr ist als ein Prophet!
27 Dieser ist"s, von dem geschrieben steht: »Siehe, ich sende meinen Boten vor deinem Angesicht her, der deinen Weg vor dir bereiten soll«.[b]
28 Denn ich sage euch: Unter denen, die von Frauen geboren sind, gibt es keinen größeren Propheten als Johannes den Täufer; doch der Kleinste im Reich Gottes ist größer als er.
29 Und das ganze Volk, das ihn hörte, und die Zöllner gaben Gott recht, indem sie sich taufen ließen mit der Taufe des Johannes;
30 die Pharisäer aber und die Gesetzesgelehrten verwarfen den Ratschluss Gottes, sich selbst zum Schaden, indem sie sich nicht von ihm taufen ließen.
31 Und der Herr sprach: Wem soll ich nun die Menschen dieses Geschlechts vergleichen? Und wem sind sie gleich?
32 Sie sind Kindern gleich, die am Markt sitzen und einander zurufen und sprechen: Wir haben euch aufgespielt, und ihr habt nicht getanzt; wir haben euch Klagelieder gesungen, und ihr habt nicht geweint!
33 Denn Johannes der Täufer ist gekommen, der aß kein Brot und trank keinen Wein; da sagt ihr: Er hat einen Dämon!
34 Der Sohn des Menschen ist gekommen, der isst und trinkt; da sagt ihr: Siehe, wie ist der Mensch ein Fresser und Weinsäufer, ein Freund der Zöllner und Sünder!
35 Und doch ist die Weisheit gerechtfertigt worden von allen ihren Kindern.
Die Salbung Jesu im Haus des Pharisäers
36 Es bat ihn aber einer der Pharisäer, mit ihm zu essen. Und er ging in das Haus des Pharisäers und setzte[c] sich zu Tisch.
37 Und siehe, eine Frau war in der Stadt, die war eine Sünderin; als sie hörte, dass er in dem Haus des Pharisäers zu Gast war, da brachte sie ein Alabasterfläschchen voll Salböl,
38 und sie trat hinten zu seinen Füßen, weinte und fing an, seine Füße mit Tränen zu benetzen; und sie trocknete sie mit den Haaren ihres Hauptes, küsste seine Füße und salbte sie mit der Salbe.
39 Als aber der Pharisäer, der ihn eingeladen hatte, das sah, sprach er bei sich selbst: Wenn dieser ein Prophet wäre, so wüsste er doch, wer und was für eine Frau das ist, die ihn anrührt, dass sie eine Sünderin ist!
40 Da antwortete Jesus und sprach zu ihm: Simon, ich habe dir etwas zu sagen. Er sprach: Meister, sprich!
41 Ein Gläubiger hatte zwei Schuldner. Der eine war 500 Denare schuldig, der andere 50.
42 Da sie aber nichts hatten, um zu bezahlen, schenkte er es beiden. Sage mir: Welcher von ihnen wird ihn nun am meisten lieben?
43 Simon aber antwortete und sprach: Ich vermute der, dem er am meisten geschenkt hat. Und er sprach zu ihm: Du hast richtig geurteilt!
44 Und indem er sich zu der Frau wandte, sprach er zu Simon: Siehst du diese Frau? Ich bin in dein Haus gekommen, und du hast mir kein Wasser für meine Füße gegeben; sie aber hat meine Füße mit Tränen benetzt und mit den Haaren ihres Hauptes getrocknet.
45 Du hast mir keinen Kuss gegeben; sie aber hat, seit ich hereingekommen bin, nicht aufgehört, meine Füße zu küssen.
46 Du hast mein Haupt nicht mit Öl gesalbt, sie aber hat meine Füße mit Salbe gesalbt.
47 Deshalb sage ich dir: Ihre vielen Sünden sind vergeben worden, darum hat sie viel Liebe erwiesen; wem aber wenig vergeben wird, der liebt wenig.
48 Und er sprach zu ihr: Dir sind deine Sünden vergeben!

The Faith of the Centurion(A)
7 When Jesus had finished saying all this(B) to the people who were listening, he entered Capernaum. 2 There a centurion’s servant, whom his master valued highly, was sick and about to die. 3 The centurion heard of Jesus and sent some elders of the Jews to him, asking him to come and heal his servant. 4 When they came to Jesus, they pleaded earnestly with him, “This man deserves to have you do this, 5 because he loves our nation and has built our synagogue.” 6 So Jesus went with them.
He was not far from the house when the centurion sent friends to say to him: “Lord, don’t trouble yourself, for I do not deserve to have you come under my roof. 7 That is why I did not even consider myself worthy to come to you. But say the word, and my servant will be healed.(C) 8 For I myself am a man under authority, with soldiers under me. I tell this one, ‘Go,’ and he goes; and that one, ‘Come,’ and he comes. I say to my servant, ‘Do this,’ and he does it.”
9 When Jesus heard this, he was amazed at him, and turning to the crowd following him, he said, “I tell you, I have not found such great faith even in Israel.” 10 Then the men who had been sent returned to the house and found the servant well.
Jesus Raises a Widow’s Son(D)
11 Soon afterward, Jesus went to a town called Nain, and his disciples and a large crowd went along with him. 12 As he approached the town gate, a dead person was being carried out—the only son of his mother, and she was a widow. And a large crowd from the town was with her. 13 When the Lord(E) saw her, his heart went out to her and he said, “Don’t cry.”
14 Then he went up and touched the bier they were carrying him on, and the bearers stood still. He said, “Young man, I say to you, get up!”(F) 15 The dead man sat up and began to talk, and Jesus gave him back to his mother.
16 They were all filled with awe(G) and praised God.(H) “A great prophet(I) has appeared among us,” they said. “God has come to help his people.”(J) 17 This news about Jesus spread throughout Judea and the surrounding country.(K)
Jesus and John the Baptist(L)
18 John’s(M) disciples(N) told him about all these things. Calling two of them, 19 he sent them to the Lord to ask, “Are you the one who is to come, or should we expect someone else?”
20 When the men came to Jesus, they said, “John the Baptist sent us to you to ask, ‘Are you the one who is to come, or should we expect someone else?’”
21 At that very time Jesus cured many who had diseases, sicknesses(O) and evil spirits, and gave sight to many who were blind. 22 So he replied to the messengers, “Go back and report to John what you have seen and heard: The blind receive sight, the lame walk, those who have leprosy[a] are cleansed, the deaf hear, the dead are raised, and the good news is proclaimed to the poor.(P) 23 Blessed is anyone who does not stumble on account of me.”
24 After John’s messengers left, Jesus began to speak to the crowd about John: “What did you go out into the wilderness to see? A reed swayed by the wind? 25 If not, what did you go out to see? A man dressed in fine clothes? No, those who wear expensive clothes and indulge in luxury are in palaces. 26 But what did you go out to see? A prophet?(Q) Yes, I tell you, and more than a prophet. 27 This is the one about whom it is written:
28 I tell you, among those born of women there is no one greater than John; yet the one who is least in the kingdom of God(S) is greater than he.”
29 (All the people, even the tax collectors, when they heard Jesus’ words, acknowledged that God’s way was right, because they had been baptized by John.(T) 30 But the Pharisees and the experts in the law(U) rejected God’s purpose for themselves, because they had not been baptized by John.)
31 Jesus went on to say, “To what, then, can I compare the people of this generation? What are they like? 32 They are like children sitting in the marketplace and calling out to each other:
“‘We played the pipe for you,
and you did not dance;
we sang a dirge,
and you did not cry.’
33 For John the Baptist came neither eating bread nor drinking wine,(V) and you say, ‘He has a demon.’ 34 The Son of Man came eating and drinking, and you say, ‘Here is a glutton and a drunkard, a friend of tax collectors and sinners.’(W) 35 But wisdom is proved right by all her children.”
Jesus Anointed by a Sinful Woman(X)(Y)
36 When one of the Pharisees invited Jesus to have dinner with him, he went to the Pharisee’s house and reclined at the table. 37 A woman in that town who lived a sinful life learned that Jesus was eating at the Pharisee’s house, so she came there with an alabaster jar of perfume. 38 As she stood behind him at his feet weeping, she began to wet his feet with her tears. Then she wiped them with her hair, kissed them and poured perfume on them.
39 When the Pharisee who had invited him saw this, he said to himself, “If this man were a prophet,(Z) he would know who is touching him and what kind of woman she is—that she is a sinner.”
40 Jesus answered him, “Simon, I have something to tell you.”
“Tell me, teacher,” he said.
41 “Two people owed money to a certain moneylender. One owed him five hundred denarii,[c] and the other fifty. 42 Neither of them had the money to pay him back, so he forgave the debts of both. Now which of them will love him more?”
43 Simon replied, “I suppose the one who had the bigger debt forgiven.”
“You have judged correctly,” Jesus said.
44 Then he turned toward the woman and said to Simon, “Do you see this woman? I came into your house. You did not give me any water for my feet,(AA) but she wet my feet with her tears and wiped them with her hair. 45 You did not give me a kiss,(AB) but this woman, from the time I entered, has not stopped kissing my feet. 46 You did not put oil on my head,(AC) but she has poured perfume on my feet. 47 Therefore, I tell you, her many sins have been forgiven—as her great love has shown. But whoever has been forgiven little loves little.”
48 Then Jesus said to her, “Your sins are forgiven.”(AD)
49 The other guests began to say among themselves, “Who is this who even forgives sins?”
50 Jesus said to the woman, “Your faith has saved you;(AE) go in peace.”(AF)
