²⁹ (^(A)When all the people heard this, and ^(B)the tax collectors too, they declared God just,^{[a] (C)}having been baptized with ^(D)the baptism of John,

^12 (A)Tax collectors also came to be baptized and said to him, “Teacher, ^(B)what shall we do?”

³⁵ Yet ^(A)wisdom is justified by all her children.”

⁵ And I heard the angel in charge of the waters^[a] say,

³ And they sing ^(A)the song of Moses, ^(B)the servant of God, and the song of the Lamb, saying,

³ For, being ignorant of ^(A)the righteousness of God, and seeking to establish their own, they did not submit to God's righteousness.

⁴ By no means! ^(A)Let God be true though ^(B)every one were a liar, as it is written,

⁵ But if our unrighteousness serves to show the righteousness of God, what shall we say? That God is unrighteous to inflict ^(E)wrath on us? (^(F)I speak in a human way.) ⁶ By no means! For then how could ^(G)God judge the world?

³ And he said, ^(A)“Into what then were you baptized?” They said, “Into ^(B)John's baptism.”

²⁵ He had been instructed in ^(A)the way of the Lord. And ^(B)being fervent in spirit,^[a] he spoke and taught accurately the things concerning Jesus, though he knew only ^(C)the baptism of John.
