Jesus Raises the Son of the Widow of Nain

11 Now it happened, the day after, that He went into a city called Nain; and many of His disciples went with Him, and a large crowd. 12 And when He came near the gate of the city, behold, a dead man was being carried out, the only son of his mother; and she was a widow. And a large crowd from the city was with her. 13 When the Lord saw her, He had (A)compassion on her and said to her, (B)“Do not weep.” 14 Then He came and touched the open coffin, and those who carried him stood still. And He said, “Young man, I say to you, (C)arise.” 15 So he who was dead (D)sat up and began to speak. And He (E)presented him to his mother.

16 (F)Then fear [a]came upon all, and they (G)glorified God, saying, (H)“A great prophet has risen up among us”; and, (I)“God has visited His people.” 17 And this report about Him went throughout all Judea and all the surrounding region.

The Parable of the Persistent Widow

18 Then He spoke a parable to them, that men (A)always ought to pray and not lose heart, saying: “There was in a certain city a judge who did not fear God nor [a]regard man. Now there was a widow in that city; and she came to him, saying, [b]‘Get justice for me from my adversary.’ And he would not for a while; but afterward he said within himself, ‘Though I do not fear God nor regard man, (B)yet because this widow troubles me I will [c]avenge her, lest by her continual coming she weary me.’ ”

Then the Lord said, “Hear what the unjust judge said. And (C)shall God not avenge His own elect who cry out day and night to Him, though He bears long with them? I tell you (D)that He will avenge them speedily. Nevertheless, when the Son of Man comes, will He really find faith on the earth?”

The Widow’s Two Mites(A)

21 And He looked up (B)and saw the rich putting their gifts into the treasury, and He saw also a certain (C)poor widow putting in two (D)mites.[a] So He said, “Truly I say to you (E)that this poor widow has put in more than all; for all these out of their abundance have put in offerings [b]for God, but she out of her poverty put in (F)all the livelihood that she had.”
