A Discussion about the Sabbath

One Sabbath day as Jesus was walking through some grainfields, his disciples broke off heads of grain, rubbed off the husks in their hands, and ate the grain. But some Pharisees said, “Why are you breaking the law by harvesting grain on the Sabbath?”

Jesus replied, “Haven’t you read in the Scriptures what David did when he and his companions were hungry? He went into the house of God and broke the law by eating the sacred loaves of bread that only the priests can eat. He also gave some to his companions.” And Jesus added, “The Son of Man[a] is Lord, even over the Sabbath.”

The Question about the Sabbath

One Sabbath[a] while Jesus[b] was going through some grain fields, his disciples plucked some heads of grain, rubbed them in their hands, and ate them.(A) But some of the Pharisees said, “Why are you doing what is not lawful[c] on the Sabbath?”(B) Jesus answered, “Have you not read what David did when he and his companions were hungry?(C) How he entered the house of God and took and ate the bread of the Presence, which it is not lawful for any but the priests to eat, and gave some to his companions?”(D) Then he said to them, “The Son of Man is lord of the Sabbath.”
