A Discussion about the Sabbath

One Sabbath day as Jesus was walking through some grainfields, his disciples broke off heads of grain, rubbed off the husks in their hands, and ate the grain. But some Pharisees said, “Why are you breaking the law by harvesting grain on the Sabbath?”

Jesus replied, “Haven’t you read in the Scriptures what David did when he and his companions were hungry? He went into the house of God and broke the law by eating the sacred loaves of bread that only the priests can eat. He also gave some to his companions.” And Jesus added, “The Son of Man[a] is Lord, even over the Sabbath.”

Lord of the Sabbath

(A)Now it happened that on a Sabbath He was passing through some grainfields, and His disciples (B)were picking and eating the heads of grain, rubbing them in their hands. But some of the Pharisees said, “Why do you do what (C)is not lawful on the Sabbath?” And Jesus answered and said to them, “Have you never read (D)what David did when he was hungry, he and those who were with him, how he entered the house of God, and took and ate the [a]consecrated bread which (E)is not lawful for any to eat except the priests alone, and gave it to his companions?” And He was saying to them, “The Son of Man is Lord of the Sabbath.”
