⁴⁷ I will show you what someone is like who comes to me, hears my words, and acts on them.^(A)

²² But be doers of the word and not merely hearers who deceive themselves.^{(A) 23} For if any are hearers of the word and not doers, they are like those who look at themselves^[a] in a mirror;^{(B) 24} for they look at themselves and, on going away, immediately forget what they were like. ²⁵ But those who look into the perfect law, the law of liberty, and persevere, being not hearers who forget but doers who act—they will be blessed in their doing.^(C)

Hearers and Doers

²⁴ “Everyone, then, who hears these words of mine and acts on them will be like a wise man who built his house on rock.^{(A) 25} The rain fell, the floods came, and the winds blew and beat on that house, but it did not fall because it had been founded on rock. ²⁶ And everyone who hears these words of mine and does not act on them will be like a foolish man who built his house on sand. ²⁷ The rain fell, and the floods came, and the winds blew and beat against that house, and it fell—and great was its fall!”

²⁸ But he said, “Blessed rather are those who hear the word of God and obey it!”^(A)

¹⁷ Anyone, then, who knows the right thing to do and fails to do it commits sin.^(A)

The Promise of the Holy Spirit

¹⁵ “If you love me, you will keep^[a] my commandments.^(A)

⁷ to those who by patiently doing good seek for glory and honor and immortality, he will give eternal life, ⁸ while for those who are self-seeking and who obey not the truth but injustice, there will be wrath and fury.^{(A) 9} There will be affliction and distress for everyone who does evil, both the Jew first and the Greek,^{(B) 10} but glory and honor and peace for everyone who does good, both the Jew first and the Greek.

⁵⁰ For whoever does the will of my Father in heaven is my brother and sister and mother.”^(A)

²¹ They who have my commandments and keep them are those who love me, and those who love me will be loved by my Father, and I will love them and reveal myself to them.”^{(A) 22} Judas (not Iscariot) said to him, “Lord, how is it that you will reveal yourself to us and not to the world?” ²³ Jesus answered him, “Those who love me will keep my word, and my Father will love them, and we will come to them and make our home with them.^{(B) 24} Whoever does not love me does not keep my words, and the word that you hear is not mine but is from the Father who sent me.^(C)

⁴ Come to him, a living stone, though rejected by mortals yet chosen and precious in God’s sight, and
