⁴⁶ “Why do you call me ‘Lord, Lord,’ and do not do what I tell you?^(A)

Corruption of the Priesthood

⁶ A son honors his father and a servant his master. If then I am a father, where is the honor due me? And if I am a master, where is the respect due me? says the Lord of hosts to you, O priests, who despise my name. You say, “How have we despised your name?”^(A)

Concerning Self-Deception

²¹ “Not everyone who says to me, ‘Lord, Lord,’ will enter the kingdom of heaven, but only the one who does the will of my Father in heaven.^{(A) 22} On that day many will say to me, ‘Lord, Lord, did we not prophesy in your name, and cast out demons in your name, and do many mighty works in your name?’^{(B) 23} Then I will declare to them, ‘I never knew you; go away from me, you who behave lawlessly.’^(C)

⁷ Do not be deceived; God is not mocked, for you reap whatever you sow.^(A)

²⁵ Once the owner of the house has got up and shut the door, and you begin to stand outside and to knock at the door, saying, ‘Lord, open to us,’ then in reply he will say to you, ‘I do not know where you come from.’^{(A) 26} Then you will begin to say, ‘We ate and drank with you, and you taught in our streets.’ ²⁷ But he will say to you, ‘I do not know where you come from; go away from me, all you evildoers!’^(B)

⁴⁴ Then they also will answer, ‘Lord, when was it that we saw you hungry or thirsty or a stranger or naked or sick or in prison and did not take care of you?’

¹³ You call me Teacher and Lord, and you are right, for that is what I am.^{(A) 14} So if I, your Lord and Teacher, have washed your feet, you also ought to wash one another’s feet.^{(B) 15} For I have set you an example, that you also should do as I have done to you.^{(C) 16} Very truly, I tell you, slaves are not greater than their master, nor are messengers^[a] greater than the one who sent them.^{(D) 17} If you know these things, you are blessed if you do them.

²⁴ Then the one who had received the one talent also came forward, saying, ‘Master, I knew that you were a harsh man, reaping where you did not sow and gathering where you did not scatter,^(A)

¹¹ Later the other young women^[a] came also, saying, ‘Lord, lord, open to us.’^(A)
