39 Now He also spoke a parable to them: “(A)A person who is blind cannot guide another who is blind, can he? Will they not both fall into a pit? 40 (B)A [a]student is not above the teacher; but everyone, when he has been fully trained, will be like his teacher. 41 Why do you look at the [b]speck that is in your brother’s eye, but do not notice the log that is in your own eye? 42 How can you say to your brother, ‘Brother, let me take out the [c]speck that is in your eye,’ when you yourself do not see the log that is in your own eye? You hypocrite, first take the log out of your own eye, and then you will see clearly to take out the [d]speck that is in your brother’s eye. 43 (C)For there is no good tree that bears bad fruit, nor, [e]on the other hand, a bad tree that bears good fruit. 44 (D)For each tree is known by its own fruit. For people do not gather figs from thorns, nor do they pick grapes from a briar bush. 45 (E)The good person out of the good [f]treasure of his heart brings forth what is good; and the evil person out of the evil treasure brings forth what is evil; (F)for his mouth speaks from [g]that which fills his heart.
The Parable of the Builders
46 “Now (G)why do you call Me, ‘Lord, Lord,’ and do not do what I say? 47 (H)Everyone who comes to Me and hears My words and [h]acts on them, I will show you whom he is like: 48 he is like a man building a house, who [i]dug deep and laid a foundation on the rock; and when there was a flood, the river burst against that house and yet it could not shake it, because it had been well built. 49 But the one who has heard and has not acted accordingly is like a man who built a house on the ground without a foundation; and the river burst against it and it immediately collapsed, and the ruin of that house was great.”
Jesus Heals a Centurion’s Slave
7 (I)When He had completed all His [j]teaching in the hearing of the people, (J)He went to Capernaum.
2 Now a centurion’s slave, who was highly regarded by him, was sick and about to die. 3 When he heard about Jesus, (K)he sent some [k]Jewish elders to Him, asking Him to come and save the life of his slave. 4 When they came to Jesus, they strongly urged Him, saying, “He is worthy for You to grant this to him; 5 for he loves our nation, and it was he who built us our synagogue.” 6 Now Jesus started on His way with them; but already, when He was not yet far from the house, the centurion sent friends, saying to Him, “[l]Lord, do not trouble Yourself further, for I am not worthy for You to enter under my roof; 7 for that reason I did not even consider myself worthy to come to You; but just [m]say the word, and my servant [n]shall be healed. 8 For I also am a man placed under authority, with soldiers under myself; and I say to this one, ‘Go!’ and he goes, and to another, ‘Come!’ and he comes, and to my slave, ‘Do this!’ and he does it.” 9 Now when Jesus heard this, He was amazed at him, and turned and said to the crowd that was following Him, “I say to you, (L)not even in Israel have I found such great faith.” 10 And when those who had been sent returned to the house, they found the slave in good health.

39 He also told them this parable: “Can the blind lead the blind? Will they not both fall into a pit?(A) 40 The student is not above the teacher, but everyone who is fully trained will be like their teacher.(B)
41 “Why do you look at the speck of sawdust in your brother’s eye and pay no attention to the plank in your own eye? 42 How can you say to your brother, ‘Brother, let me take the speck out of your eye,’ when you yourself fail to see the plank in your own eye? You hypocrite, first take the plank out of your eye, and then you will see clearly to remove the speck from your brother’s eye.
A Tree and Its Fruit(C)
43 “No good tree bears bad fruit, nor does a bad tree bear good fruit. 44 Each tree is recognized by its own fruit.(D) People do not pick figs from thornbushes, or grapes from briers. 45 A good man brings good things out of the good stored up in his heart, and an evil man brings evil things out of the evil stored up in his heart. For the mouth speaks what the heart is full of.(E)
The Wise and Foolish Builders(F)
46 “Why do you call me, ‘Lord, Lord,’(G) and do not do what I say?(H) 47 As for everyone who comes to me and hears my words and puts them into practice,(I) I will show you what they are like. 48 They are like a man building a house, who dug down deep and laid the foundation on rock. When a flood came, the torrent struck that house but could not shake it, because it was well built. 49 But the one who hears my words and does not put them into practice is like a man who built a house on the ground without a foundation. The moment the torrent struck that house, it collapsed and its destruction was complete.”
The Faith of the Centurion(J)
7 When Jesus had finished saying all this(K) to the people who were listening, he entered Capernaum. 2 There a centurion’s servant, whom his master valued highly, was sick and about to die. 3 The centurion heard of Jesus and sent some elders of the Jews to him, asking him to come and heal his servant. 4 When they came to Jesus, they pleaded earnestly with him, “This man deserves to have you do this, 5 because he loves our nation and has built our synagogue.” 6 So Jesus went with them.
He was not far from the house when the centurion sent friends to say to him: “Lord, don’t trouble yourself, for I do not deserve to have you come under my roof. 7 That is why I did not even consider myself worthy to come to you. But say the word, and my servant will be healed.(L) 8 For I myself am a man under authority, with soldiers under me. I tell this one, ‘Go,’ and he goes; and that one, ‘Come,’ and he comes. I say to my servant, ‘Do this,’ and he does it.”
9 When Jesus heard this, he was amazed at him, and turning to the crowd following him, he said, “I tell you, I have not found such great faith even in Israel.” 10 Then the men who had been sent returned to the house and found the servant well.
