24 (A)“But woe to you who are rich, (B)for you (C)have received your consolation.

Warning to the Rich

Come now, (A)you rich, weep and howl for the (B)miseries that are coming upon you. (C)Your riches have rotted and (D)your garments are moth-eaten. Your gold and silver have corroded, and their corrosion will be evidence against you and will eat your flesh like fire. (E)You have laid up treasure (F)in the last days. Behold, (G)the wages of the laborers who mowed your fields, which you kept back by fraud, are crying out against you, and (H)the cries of the harvesters have reached the ears of (I)the Lord of hosts. (J)You have lived on the earth in luxury and (K)in self-indulgence. You have fattened your hearts in (L)a day of slaughter. You have condemned and (M)murdered (N)the righteous person. He does not resist you.

17 As for the rich in (A)this present age, charge them (B)not to be haughty, nor (C)to set their hopes on (D)the uncertainty of riches, but on God, (E)who richly provides us with everything to enjoy.

(A)“Thus, when you give to the needy, sound no trumpet before you, as the hypocrites do in the synagogues and in the streets, that they may (B)be praised by others. Truly, I say to you, they have (C)received their reward.

those who (A)trust in their wealth
and boast of the abundance of their riches?
Truly no man (B)can ransom another,
or (C)give to God (D)the price of his life,

But you (A)have dishonored the poor man. Are not the rich the ones who oppress you, and the ones who (B)drag you (C)into court?

23 (A)But when he heard these things, he became very sad, for he was extremely rich. 24 Jesus, seeing that he had become sad, said, (B)“How difficult it is for those who have wealth to enter (C)the kingdom of God! 25 For it is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle than for a rich person to enter (D)the kingdom of God.”

16 Be not afraid when a man becomes rich,
when the glory of his house increases.
17 (A)For when he dies he will (B)carry nothing away;
his glory will not go down after him.
18 For though, while he lives, he counts himself (C)blessed
—and though you get praise when you do well for yourself—
19 his soul will (D)go to the generation of his fathers,
who will never again (E)see light.

Woe to Those at Ease in Zion

(A)“Woe to those who are at ease in Zion,
and to those who feel secure on (B)the mountain of Samaria,
(C)the notable men of (D)the first of the nations,
to whom the house of Israel comes!
Pass over to (E)Calneh, and see,
    and from there go to (F)Hamath the great;
then go down to (G)Gath of the Philistines.
(H)Are you better than these kingdoms?
Or is their territory greater than your territory,
(I)O you who put far away the day of disaster
(J)and bring near the seat of violence?

“Woe to those (K)who lie on (L)beds of ivory
(M)and stretch themselves out on their couches,
and eat lambs from the flock
(N)and calves from the midst of the stall,
(O)who sing idle songs to the sound of the harp
and like David (P)invent for themselves instruments of music,
(Q)who drink wine in bowls
and (R)anoint themselves with the finest oils,
but are not grieved over the ruin of Joseph!

The Rich Man and Lazarus

19 “There was a rich man who was clothed in (A)purple and fine linen and (B)who feasted sumptuously every day. 20 And at his gate (C)was laid a poor man named Lazarus, covered with sores, 21 who desired to be fed with (D)what fell from the rich man's table. Moreover, even the dogs came and licked his sores. 22 The poor man died and was carried by (E)the angels (F)to Abraham's side.[a] The rich man also died and was buried, 23 and in (G)Hades, being in torment, he lifted up his eyes and (H)saw Abraham far off and Lazarus (I)at his side. 24 And he called out, (J)‘Father Abraham, have mercy on me, and send Lazarus to dip the end of his finger in water and (K)cool my tongue, for (L)I am in anguish in this flame.’ 25 But Abraham said, ‘Child, remember that (M)you in your lifetime received your good things, and Lazarus in like manner bad things; but now he is comforted here, and you are in anguish.

15 And he said to them, (A)“Take care, and be on your guard against all covetousness, for one's life does not consist in the abundance of his possessions.” 16 And he told them a parable, saying, (B)“The land of a rich man produced plentifully, 17 and he thought to himself, (C)‘What shall I do, for I have nowhere to store my crops?’ 18 And he said, ‘I will do this: I will tear down my (D)barns and build larger ones, and there I will store all my grain and my goods. 19 And I will say to my soul, “Soul, you have ample goods laid up (E)for many years; relax, (F)eat, drink, be merry.”’ 20 But God said to him, (G)‘Fool! (H)This night (I)your soul is required of you, and the things you have prepared, (J)whose will they be?’ 21 So is the one (K)who lays up treasure for himself and is not rich toward God.”
