The Message
Push Out into Deep Water
5 1-3 Once when he was standing on the shore of Lake Gennesaret, the crowd was pushing in on him to better hear the Word of God. He noticed two boats tied up. The fishermen had just left them and were out scrubbing their nets. He climbed into the boat that was Simon’s and asked him to put out a little from the shore. Sitting there, using the boat for a pulpit, he taught the crowd.
4 When he finished teaching, he said to Simon, “Push out into deep water and let your nets out for a catch.”
5-7 Simon said, “Master, we’ve been fishing hard all night and haven’t caught even a minnow. But if you say so, I’ll let out the nets.” It was no sooner said than done—a huge haul of fish, straining the nets past capacity. They waved to their partners in the other boat to come help them. They filled both boats, nearly swamping them with the catch.
8-10 Simon Peter, when he saw it, fell to his knees before Jesus. “Master, leave. I’m a sinner and can’t handle this holiness. Leave me to myself.” When they pulled in that catch of fish, awe overwhelmed Simon and everyone with him. It was the same with James and John, Zebedee’s sons, coworkers with Simon.
10-11 Jesus said to Simon, “There is nothing to fear. From now on you’ll be fishing for men and women.” They pulled their boats up on the beach, left them, nets and all, and followed him.
Invitation to a Changed Life
12 One day in one of the villages there was a man covered with leprosy. When he saw Jesus he fell down before him in prayer and said, “If you want to, you can cleanse me.”
13 Jesus put out his hand, touched him, and said, “I want to. Be clean.” Then and there his skin was smooth, the leprosy gone.
14-16 Jesus instructed him, “Don’t talk about this all over town. Just quietly present your healed self to the priest, along with the offering ordered by Moses. Your cleansed and obedient life, not your words, will bear witness to what I have done.” But the man couldn’t keep it to himself, and the word got out. Soon a large crowd of people had gathered to listen and be healed of their sicknesses. As often as possible Jesus withdrew to out-of-the-way places for prayer.
17 One day as he was teaching, Pharisees and religion teachers were sitting around. They had come from nearly every village in Galilee and Judea, even as far away as Jerusalem, to be there. The healing power of God was on him.
18-20 Some men arrived carrying a paraplegic on a stretcher. They were looking for a way to get into the house and set him before Jesus. When they couldn’t find a way in because of the crowd, they went up on the roof, removed some tiles, and let him down in the middle of everyone, right in front of Jesus. Impressed by their bold belief, he said, “Friend, I forgive your sins.”
21 That set the religion scholars and Pharisees buzzing. “Who does he think he is? That’s blasphemous talk! God and only God can forgive sins.”
22-26 Jesus knew exactly what they were thinking and said, “Why all this gossipy whispering? Which is simpler: to say ‘I forgive your sins,’ or to say ‘Get up and start walking’? Well, just so it’s clear that I’m the Son of Man and authorized to do either, or both. . . .” He now spoke directly to the paraplegic: “Get up. Take your bedroll and go home.” Without a moment’s hesitation, he did it—got up, took his blanket, and left for home, giving glory to God all the way. The people rubbed their eyes, stunned—and then also gave glory to God. Awestruck, they said, “We’ve never seen anything like that!”
27-28 After this he went out and saw a man named Levi at his work collecting taxes. Jesus said, “Come along with me.” And he did—walked away from everything and went with him.
29-30 Levi gave a large dinner at his home for Jesus. Everybody was there, tax men and other disreputable characters as guests at the dinner. The Pharisees and their religion scholars came to his disciples greatly offended. “What is he doing eating and drinking with misfits and ‘sinners’?”
31-32 Jesus heard about it and spoke up, “Who needs a doctor: the healthy or the sick? I’m here inviting outsiders, not insiders—an invitation to a changed life, changed inside and out.”
33 They asked him, “John’s disciples are well-known for keeping fasts and saying prayers. Also the Pharisees. But you seem to spend most of your time at parties. Why?”
34-35 Jesus said, “When you’re celebrating a wedding, you don’t skimp on the cake and wine. You feast. Later you may need to exercise moderation, but this isn’t the time. As long as the bride and groom are with you, you have a good time. When the groom is gone, the fasting can begin. No one throws cold water on a friendly bonfire. This is Kingdom Come!
36-39 “No one cuts up a fine silk scarf to patch old work clothes; you want fabrics that match. And you don’t put wine in old, cracked bottles; you get strong, clean bottles for your fresh vintage wine. And no one who has ever tasted fine aged wine prefers unaged wine.”

5 Aconteció que, mientras las multitudes se agolpaban sobre él y escuchaban la palabra de Dios, Jesús estaba de pie junto al lago de Genesaret 2 y vio dos barcas que estaban a la orilla del lago. Los pescadores habían salido de ellas y estaban lavando sus redes. 3 Al entrar él en una de las barcas, la cual pertenecía a Simón, pidió a este que la apartara de tierra un poco. Luego se sentó y enseñaba a las multitudes desde la barca. 4 Cuando acabó de hablarles, dijo a Simón:
—Boga mar adentro, y echen sus redes para pescar.
5 Simón le respondió y dijo:
—Maestro, toda la noche hemos trabajado duro y no hemos pescado nada. Pero por tu palabra echaré la red.
6 Cuando lo hicieron, atraparon una gran cantidad de peces y sus redes se rompían. 7 Hicieron señas a sus compañeros que estaban en la otra barca para que vinieran a ayudarles. Ellos vinieron y llenaron ambas barcas de manera que se hundían. 8 Y Simón Pedro, al verlo, cayó de rodillas ante Jesús exclamando:
—¡Apártate de mí, Señor, porque soy hombre pecador!
9 Por la pesca que habían logrado, el temor se apoderó de Pedro y de todos los que estaban con él, 10 y de igual manera de Jacobo y Juan, hijos de Zebedeo, que eran socios de Simón. Entonces Jesús dijo a Simón:
—No temas; de aquí en adelante estarás pescando hombres.
11 Después de sacar las barcas a tierra, lo dejaron todo y lo siguieron.
Jesús sana a un leproso
12 Aconteció que, estando Jesús en una de las ciudades, he aquí había un hombre lleno de lepra. Él vio a Jesús y, postrándose sobre su rostro, le rogó diciendo:
—Señor, si quieres, puedes limpiarme.
13 Entonces extendió la mano y lo tocó diciendo:
—Quiero. ¡Sé limpio!
Al instante la lepra desapareció de él. 14 Y Jesús le mandó que no se lo dijera a nadie; más bien, le dijo:
—Ve y muéstrate al sacerdote y da por tu purificación la ofrenda que mandó Moisés, para testimonio a ellos.
15 Sin embargo, su fama se extendía cada vez más y se juntaban a él muchas multitudes para oírlo y para ser sanadas de sus enfermedades. 16 Pero él se apartaba a los lugares desiertos y oraba.
Jesús sana a un paralítico
17 Y aconteció en uno de esos días que Jesús estaba enseñando, y estaban sentados allí unos fariseos y maestros de la ley que habían venido de todas las aldeas de Galilea, de Judea y Jerusalén. El poder del Señor estaba con él para sanar. 18 Y he aquí, unos hombres traían sobre una camilla a un hombre que era paralítico, y procuraban llevarlo adentro y ponerlo delante de Jesús. 19 Al no encontrar cómo hacerlo a causa de la multitud, subieron encima de la casa y, juntamente con la camilla, lo bajaron por el tejado en medio, delante de Jesús. 20 Al ver la fe de ellos, Jesús le dijo:
—Hombre, tus pecados te son perdonados.
21 Entonces los escribas y los fariseos comenzaron a razonar diciendo:
—¿Quién es este que habla blasfemias? ¿Quién puede perdonar pecados sino solo Dios?
22 Pero Jesús, dándose cuenta de los razonamientos de ellos, respondió y les dijo:
—¿Qué razonan en sus corazones? 23 ¿Qué es más fácil? ¿Decir: “Tus pecados te son perdonados”, o decir: “Levántate y anda”? 24 Pero para que sepan que el Hijo del Hombre tiene autoridad en la tierra para perdonar pecados —dijo al paralítico—: A ti te digo: ¡Levántate, toma tu camilla y vete a tu casa!
25 De inmediato se levantó en presencia de ellos, tomó la camilla en que estaba recostado y se fue a su casa glorificando a Dios. 26 El asombro se apoderó de todos, y glorificaban a Dios. Fueron llenos de temor y decían:
—¡Hoy hemos visto maravillas!
El llamamiento de Leví
27 Después de esto, Jesús salió y vio a un publicano llamado Leví sentado en el lugar de los tributos públicos. Y le dijo:
—¡Sígueme!
28 Él, dejándolo todo, se levantó y lo siguió.
29 Entonces Leví le hizo un gran banquete en su casa, y había un gran número de publicanos y otros que estaban a la mesa con ellos. 30 Los fariseos y los escribas murmuraban contra los discípulos de él, diciendo:
—¿Por qué comen y beben con los publicanos y pecadores?
31 Respondiendo Jesús, les dijo:
—Los sanos no tienen necesidad de médico sino los que están enfermos. 32 No he venido a llamar a justos sino a pecadores al arrepentimiento.
Preguntas sobre el ayuno
33 Entonces ellos le dijeron:
—Los discípulos de Juan ayunan muchas veces y hacen oraciones, igual que los de los fariseos, pero los tuyos comen y beben.
34 Jesús les dijo:
—¿Acaso ustedes pueden hacer que los que están de bodas ayunen mientras el novio está con ellos? 35 Pero vendrán días cuando el novio les será quitado. Entonces, en aquellos días ayunarán.
36 Les decía también una parábola:
—Nadie corta un parche de un vestido nuevo para remendar un vestido viejo. De otra manera, el vestido nuevo se rompe y el parche tomado del nuevo no armoniza con lo viejo. 37 Ni nadie echa vino nuevo en odres viejos. De otra manera, el vino nuevo romperá los odres, el vino se derramará y los odres se perderán. 38 Pero el vino nuevo debe ser echado en odres nuevos[a]. 39 Y ninguno que bebe lo añejo quiere el nuevo porque dice: “Lo añejo es lo mejor”.

5 Một ngày kia, khi Ðức Chúa Jesus đang đứng bên bờ Hồ Ghê-nê-sa-rết, đoàn dân đông chen lấn nhau quanh Ngài để nghe lời Ðức Chúa Trời. 2 Ngài thấy hai chiếc thuyền đang đậu bên bờ hồ; các ngư phủ đã rời khỏi thuyền và đang giặt lưới. 3 Ngài bước vào một trong hai thuyền ấy, đó là chiếc thuyền của Si-môn, rồi Ngài xin ông cho thuyền dang xa bờ một chút. Ngài ngồi xuống và giảng dạy cho dân từ trên thuyền.
4 Khi giảng dạy xong, Ngài nói với Si-môn, “Hãy chèo thuyền ra chỗ nước sâu và thả lưới xuống đánh cá.”
5 Si-môn đáp, “Thưa Thầy, chúng con đã đánh cá vất vả suốt đêm và không bắt được con nào. Nhưng bây giờ Thầy bảo vậy, con sẽ thả các lưới xuống.”
6 Khi thả lưới xuống, họ bắt được rất nhiều cá đến nỗi các lưới gần đứt. 7 Vì thế họ phải ra dấu cho các bạn chài ở chiếc thuyền khác đến giúp họ. Những người ấy đến, phụ kéo lưới lên, và đổ cá đầy hai thuyền, đến nỗi cả hai đều gần chìm.
8 Khi Si-môn Phi-rơ thấy vậy, ông quỳ xuống nơi chân Ðức Chúa Jesus và nói, “Lạy Chúa, xin lìa khỏi con, vì con là một kẻ tội lỗi.” 9 Số là ông và các bạn chài của ông đều quá kinh ngạc về mẻ lưới cá họ vừa bắt được. 10 Cả Gia-cơ và Giăng hai con của Xê-bê-đê, tức các đồng bạn của Si-môn, cũng kinh ngạc như vậy.
Ðức Chúa Jesus nói với Si-môn, “Ðừng sợ. Từ nay trở đi ngươi sẽ thành tay đánh lưới người.”
11 Sau khi kéo thuyền lên bờ, họ bỏ tất cả mà theo Ngài.
Chúa Chữa Lành Người Phung

12 Một ngày nọ Ngài đang ở trong một thành kia; này, tại đó có một người mình đầy phung hủi. Khi thấy Ðức Chúa Jesus, người ấy sấp mặt xuống đất và cầu xin Ngài, “Lạy Chúa, nếu Ngài muốn, Ngài có thể chữa cho con được sạch.”
13 Ngài đưa tay, chạm vào người ông, và nói, “Ta muốn. Hãy sạch đi.” Ngay lập tức bịnh phung biến mất. 14 Ngài bảo ông, “Ðừng nói cho ai biết, nhưng hãy đi, trình diện với tư tế, và dâng một của lễ cho sự thanh sạch của ngươi theo như Môi-se đã truyền để làm chứng cho họ.”
15 Tuy nhiên tin tức về Ngài đã được đồn ra khắp nơi. Nhiều đoàn dân đông kéo đến để nghe Ngài giảng dạy và để được Ngài chữa lành bịnh tật. 16 Còn chính Ngài, Ngài thường rút lui vào những nơi hoang vắng để cầu nguyện.
Chúa Chữa Lành Người Bại

17 Một ngày kia Ngài đang giảng dạy, có những người Pha-ri-si và các thầy dạy giáo luật ngồi gần đó, những vị ấy từ các làng trong miền Ga-li-lê, miền Giu-đê, và từ Thành Giê-ru-sa-lem đến. Quyền năng của Chúa ở trong Ngài để Ngài chữa bịnh. 18 Này, người ta khiêng đến một người bị bại nằm trên cáng; họ tìm cách đem người ấy vào và đặt trước mặt Ngài. 19 Nhưng sau khi không tìm được cách nào vì đoàn dân quá đông, họ bèn lên mái nhà, gỡ tấm bửng ra, và dòng người bại nằm trên cáng xuống giữa đám đông, ngay trước mặt Ðức Chúa Jesus. 20 Thấy đức tin họ, Ngài phán, “Hỡi con, tội lỗi con đã được tha rồi.” [a]
21 Bấy giờ những thầy dạy giáo luật và những người Pha-ri-si bắt đầu thắc mắc, “Người này là ai mà lộng ngôn như thế? Ngoại trừ một mình Ðức Chúa Trời, ai có quyền tha tội?”
22 Nhưng Ðức Chúa Jesus biết ý tưởng họ, Ngài trả lời và nói với họ, “Tại sao tâm trí các ngươi thắc mắc như vậy? 23 Ðiều nào dễ hơn, nói ‘Tội lỗi của ngươi đã được tha,’ hay nói ‘Hãy đứng dậy và bước đi’? 24 Nhưng để các ngươi biết Con Người có quyền tha tội ở thế gian” –Ngài phán với người bại– “Ta bảo ngươi, hãy đứng dậy, vác cáng của ngươi, và đi về nhà.”
25 Ngay lập tức người ấy đứng dậy trước mặt họ, vác chiếc cáng ông đã nằm, đi về nhà, và tôn vinh Ðức Chúa Trời.
26 Mọi người đều kinh ngạc. Họ tôn vinh Ðức Chúa Trời và kinh hãi nói với nhau, “Hôm nay chúng ta đã thấy những việc thật lạ lùng.”
Chúa Kêu Gọi Lê-vi
(Mat 9:9; Mác 2:13-14)
27 Sau đó, Ðức Chúa Jesus đi ra và thấy một người thu thuế tên là Lê-vi, đang ngồi ở trạm thu thuế. Ngài nói với ông, “Hãy theo Ta.” 28 Ông bỏ mọi sự, đứng dậy, và theo Ngài.
Chúa Dùng Bữa với Những Kẻ Tội Lỗi
(Mat 9:10-13; Mác 2:15-17)
29 Bấy giờ Lê-vi tổ chức một tiệc thật linh đình tại nhà ông để thết đãi Ngài. Có rất đông người thu thuế và những người khác ngồi ăn với họ. 30 Những người Pha-ri-si và các thầy dạy giáo luật phàn nàn với các môn đồ Ngài rằng, “Tại sao các ông lại ăn uống với bọn thu thuế và phường tội lỗi như thế?”
31 Nhưng Ðức Chúa Jesus trả lời họ, “Không phải những người mạnh khỏe cần y sĩ nhưng những người bịnh. 32 Ta đến không phải để gọi những người công chính nhưng để gọi những kẻ tội lỗi ăn năn.”
Chúa Dạy về Sự Kiêng Ăn
(Mat 9:14-17; Mác 2:18-22)
33 Bấy giờ họ nói với Ngài, “Các môn đồ của Giăng thường kiêng ăn và cầu nguyện, các môn đồ của những thầy Pha-ri-si cũng làm thế, nhưng các môn đồ của Thầy thì vẫn ăn và uống như thường.”
34 Ðức Chúa Jesus trả lời họ, “Không lẽ các ngươi bắt các quan khách đến dự tiệc cưới phải kiêng ăn trong khi chàng rể vẫn còn ở với họ sao? 35 Sẽ có ngày chàng rể phải ra đi, bấy giờ họ sẽ kiêng ăn.”
36 Kế đó Ngài kể cho họ một ngụ ngôn, “Không ai xé một miếng vải từ chiếc áo mới để vá vào chiếc áo cũ, vì như thế áo mới sẽ rách, và miếng vải mới sẽ không hợp với chiếc áo cũ.
37 Không ai đổ rượu mới vào bầu da cũ, vì như thế rượu mới sẽ làm nứt bầu da, rượu sẽ chảy ra, và bầu rượu sẽ hư. 38 Nhưng rượu mới phải được chứa trong bầu da mới. 39 Cũng không ai sau khi uống rượu cũ lại đòi rượu mới, vì sẽ bảo, ‘Rượu cũ ngon hơn.’”

Jesus Calls His First Disciples(A)
5 One day as Jesus was standing by the Lake of Gennesaret,[a] the people were crowding around him and listening to the word of God.(B) 2 He saw at the water’s edge two boats, left there by the fishermen, who were washing their nets. 3 He got into one of the boats, the one belonging to Simon, and asked him to put out a little from shore. Then he sat down and taught the people from the boat.(C)
4 When he had finished speaking, he said to Simon, “Put out into deep water, and let down the nets for a catch.”(D)
5 Simon answered, “Master,(E) we’ve worked hard all night and haven’t caught anything.(F) But because you say so, I will let down the nets.”
6 When they had done so, they caught such a large number of fish that their nets began to break.(G) 7 So they signaled their partners in the other boat to come and help them, and they came and filled both boats so full that they began to sink.
8 When Simon Peter saw this, he fell at Jesus’ knees and said, “Go away from me, Lord; I am a sinful man!”(H) 9 For he and all his companions were astonished at the catch of fish they had taken, 10 and so were James and John, the sons of Zebedee, Simon’s partners.
Then Jesus said to Simon, “Don’t be afraid;(I) from now on you will fish for people.” 11 So they pulled their boats up on shore, left everything and followed him.(J)
Jesus Heals a Man With Leprosy(K)
12 While Jesus was in one of the towns, a man came along who was covered with leprosy.[b](L) When he saw Jesus, he fell with his face to the ground and begged him, “Lord, if you are willing, you can make me clean.”
13 Jesus reached out his hand and touched the man. “I am willing,” he said. “Be clean!” And immediately the leprosy left him.
14 Then Jesus ordered him, “Don’t tell anyone,(M) but go, show yourself to the priest and offer the sacrifices that Moses commanded(N) for your cleansing, as a testimony to them.”
15 Yet the news about him spread all the more,(O) so that crowds of people came to hear him and to be healed of their sicknesses. 16 But Jesus often withdrew to lonely places and prayed.(P)
Jesus Forgives and Heals a Paralyzed Man(Q)
17 One day Jesus was teaching, and Pharisees and teachers of the law(R) were sitting there. They had come from every village of Galilee and from Judea and Jerusalem. And the power of the Lord was with Jesus to heal the sick.(S) 18 Some men came carrying a paralyzed man on a mat and tried to take him into the house to lay him before Jesus. 19 When they could not find a way to do this because of the crowd, they went up on the roof and lowered him on his mat through the tiles into the middle of the crowd, right in front of Jesus.
20 When Jesus saw their faith, he said, “Friend, your sins are forgiven.”(T)
21 The Pharisees and the teachers of the law began thinking to themselves, “Who is this fellow who speaks blasphemy? Who can forgive sins but God alone?”(U)
22 Jesus knew what they were thinking and asked, “Why are you thinking these things in your hearts? 23 Which is easier: to say, ‘Your sins are forgiven,’ or to say, ‘Get up and walk’? 24 But I want you to know that the Son of Man(V) has authority on earth to forgive sins.” So he said to the paralyzed man, “I tell you, get up, take your mat and go home.” 25 Immediately he stood up in front of them, took what he had been lying on and went home praising God. 26 Everyone was amazed and gave praise to God.(W) They were filled with awe and said, “We have seen remarkable things today.”
Jesus Calls Levi and Eats With Sinners(X)
27 After this, Jesus went out and saw a tax collector by the name of Levi sitting at his tax booth. “Follow me,”(Y) Jesus said to him, 28 and Levi got up, left everything and followed him.(Z)
29 Then Levi held a great banquet for Jesus at his house, and a large crowd of tax collectors(AA) and others were eating with them. 30 But the Pharisees and the teachers of the law who belonged to their sect(AB) complained to his disciples, “Why do you eat and drink with tax collectors and sinners?”(AC)
31 Jesus answered them, “It is not the healthy who need a doctor, but the sick. 32 I have not come to call the righteous, but sinners to repentance.”(AD)
Jesus Questioned About Fasting(AE)
33 They said to him, “John’s disciples(AF) often fast and pray, and so do the disciples of the Pharisees, but yours go on eating and drinking.”
34 Jesus answered, “Can you make the friends of the bridegroom(AG) fast while he is with them? 35 But the time will come when the bridegroom will be taken from them;(AH) in those days they will fast.”
36 He told them this parable: “No one tears a piece out of a new garment to patch an old one. Otherwise, they will have torn the new garment, and the patch from the new will not match the old. 37 And no one pours new wine into old wineskins. Otherwise, the new wine will burst the skins; the wine will run out and the wineskins will be ruined. 38 No, new wine must be poured into new wineskins. 39 And no one after drinking old wine wants the new, for they say, ‘The old is better.’”
