Simon vangt heel veel vis

5 Op een keer was Jezus bij het meer van Gennésaret. Een grote groep mensen drong tegen Hem op om het woord van God te horen. 2 Er lagen twee boten aan de kant van het meer. De vissers waren van boord gegaan om hun netten uit te spoelen. 3 Jezus stapte in één van de boten, de boot van Simon. En Hij vroeg Simon om een eindje het meer op te varen, niet te ver bij de kant vandaan. Toen ging hij zitten en gaf de mensen les vanuit de boot.

4 Toen Hij uitgesproken was, zei Hij tegen Simon: "Ga naar diep water en gooi je netten in het water om te vissen." 5 Simon antwoordde: "Meester, we hebben de hele nacht hard gewerkt en niets gevangen. Maar omdat Ú het zegt, zal ik de netten in het water gooien." 6 Toen ze dat hadden gedaan, vingen ze zoveel vis dat de netten bijna scheurden. 7 Ze wenkten hun vrienden in de andere boot dat ze moesten komen helpen. Samen vulden ze de twee boten met vis. De boten zaten zó vol, dat ze bijna zonken. 8 Toen Simon Petrus dat zag, liet hij zich voor Jezus op zijn knieën vallen en zei: "Ga weg van mij, Heer, want ik ben een slecht mens." 9 Want hij en de andere mannen waren geschokt dat ze zóveel vis hadden gevangen. 10 Jakobus en Johannes, de zonen van Zebedeüs, waren daar ook. En ook zij waren diep geschokt. Jezus zei tegen Simon: "Je hoeft niet bang te zijn. Vanaf vandaag zul je mensen vangen." 11 Ze trokken de boten op de kant, lieten alles achter en volgden Jezus.

Jezus geneest een man met een besmettelijke huidziekte

12 Op een keer, toen Jezus in één van de steden was, kwam er een zieke man naar Hem toe. De huid van zijn hele lichaam was ziek.[a] Toen hij Jezus zag, liet hij zich voor Hem op zijn knieën vallen. Hij smeekte Jezus: "Heer, als U het wil, kunt U mij gezond maken!" 13 Jezus stak zijn hand uit, raakte hem aan[b] en zei: "Ik wil het. Wees gezond." Onmiddellijk werd zijn huid gezond. 14 Jezus zei streng tegen de man dat hij het aan niemand mocht vertellen. Verder zei Hij: "Ga naar de priester. Laat hem zien dat je weer gezond bent. Breng dan het offer voor je genezing zoals dat moet volgens de wet van Mozes.[c] Dat zal voor de mensen het bewijs zijn dat je genezen bent."

15 Er werd steeds meer over Hem gepraat. Daardoor kwamen er grote groepen mensen naar Hem toe. Ze dromden om Hem heen om naar Hem te luisteren en om door Hem genezen te worden. 16 Maar Hij vertrok naar een eenzame plaats, om te bidden.

Jezus geneest een verlamde man

17 Op een keer was Jezus weer aan het lesgeven. Er waren ook Farizeeërs en wetgeleerden[d] naar Hem komen luisteren. Zij waren uit alle dorpen van Galilea en Judea en uit Jeruzalem naar Hem toe gekomen. En de kracht van God was er, zodat Hij mensen kon genezen. 18 Er kwamen een paar mannen met een verlamde vriend op een matras. Ze probeerden hem naar binnen te dragen, want ze wilden hem bij Jezus brengen. 19 Maar dat lukte niet doordat er te veel mensen waren. Daarom klommen ze met hem het dak op. Ze haalden een paar tegels weg om een gat te maken en lieten hem op de matras door het dak zakken. Hij kwam midden in de kamer vlak bij Jezus neer. 20 Jezus zag hun geloof en zei tegen de man: "Ik vergeef je al je ongehoorzaamheid aan God." 21 De wetgeleerden en Farizeeërs zeiden tegen elkaar: "Wie denkt Hij wel dat Hij is? Alleen God kan iemand vergeven dat hij ongehoorzaam aan Hem is geweest! Hij beledigt God!" 22 Maar Jezus wist wat ze dachten. Daarom zei Hij: "Waarom vragen jullie je af of Ik dit wel mag zeggen? 23 Wat is gemakkelijker om te zeggen: 'Ik vergeef je al je ongehoorzaamheid aan God,' of: 'Sta op en loop'? 24 Maar Ik wil dat jullie weten dat de Mensenzoon hier op de aarde de macht heeft om de mensen te vergeven dat ze ongehoorzaam aan God zijn geweest." En Hij zei tegen de verlamde man: "Daarom zeg Ik je: sta op, pak je matras op en ga naar huis." 25 Iedereen zag hoe de man onmiddellijk opstond en de matras oppakte waarop hij had gelegen. Hij ging naar huis, terwijl hij God luid prees. 26 De mensen waren geschokt. En ze prezen God en zeiden vol ontzag: "Ongelooflijk, wat we vandaag hebben gezien!"

Daarna vertrok Jezus daar.

Jezus roept Levi

27 Toen zag Jezus een belasting-ontvanger, Levi (= Matteüs), in zijn kantoortje zitten. Jezus zei tegen hem: "Volg Mij." 28 De man stond op, liet alles achter, en volgde Hem.

29 Levi liet in zijn huis een grote feestmaaltijd voor Jezus klaarmaken. Heel veel andere belasting-ontvangers en andere mensen deden aan de maaltijd mee. 30 De Farizeeërs en wetgeleerden mopperden tegen Jezus' leerlingen: "Waarom eten en drinken jullie met belasting-ontvangers en andere slechte mensen?"[e] 31 Jezus antwoordde: "Gezonde mensen hebben geen dokter nodig, maar zieke mensen wél. 32 Ik ben niet gekomen om goede mensen te roepen, maar om slechte mensen te zeggen dat ze moeten gaan leven zoals God het wil."

Oude gewoonten en nieuwe dingen

33 Toen zeiden de Farizeeërs en wetgeleerden tegen Jezus: "De leerlingen van Johannes slaan op bepaalde dagen het eten over[f] en zeggen hun gebeden op. De leerlingen van de Farizeeërs doen dat ook. Maar úw leerlingen eten en drinken altijd." 34 Jezus zei tegen hen: "Hoe kunnen de gasten op een bruiloft niets eten? Ze zijn gekomen om met de bruidegom feest te vieren. Zolang de bruidegom bij hen is, eten ze mee van de feestmaaltijd. 35 Maar er zal een tijd komen dat de Bruidegom niet meer bij hen is. Dán zullen ze niets eten."

36 Hij vertelde hun een voorbeeld om het uit te leggen: "Niemand scheurt een lap van een nieuw kledingstuk af om er een oud kledingstuk mee te repareren. Want dan maakt hij het nieuwe kledingstuk kapot. En de lap van het nieuwe zal ook niet passen bij het oude. 37 En niemand doet nieuwe wijn in oude wijnzakken. Want de wijnzakken zullen barsten door het gisten van de wijn. Dan loopt de wijn weg en de wijnzakken zijn kapot. 38 Maar nieuwe wijn moet je in nieuwe wijnzakken doen. Dan blijft de wijn bewaard en de zakken blijven heel. 39 Maar niemand die oude wijn heeft gedronken, wil jonge wijn. Want hij zegt: 'De oude wijn is beter.' "

Ze waren zelfs nog preciezer dan nodig was, want ze hielden zich ook aan de strengere regels die alleen voor de priesters golden. Ze vonden zichzelf veel beter dan het 'gewone volk' dat zich minder met de wet bezighield. Ze hielden zich daarvan op een afstand, omdat ze vonden dat ze 'onrein' werden van die mensen. De wetgeleerden bestudeerden de wet van God en leerden die aan de mensen.
  5. Lukas 5:30 Belastingontvangers hoorden bij de 'slechte mensen' en werden door de Joden gehaat. Want het waren Joden die voor de Romeinen belasting ophaalden. Ze werkten dus voor de vijand. Maar ook werden ze gehaat omdat ze over het algemeen veel meer belasting vroegen dan waar ze recht op hadden. Daar werden ze zelf rijk van. Lees Lukas 3:12 en 13 en Lukas 19:1-10.
  6. Lukas 5:33 Dat werd gedaan als teken van verdriet, of als teken van spijt over de verkeerde dingen die ze gedaan hadden.

Jesus asks some men to go with him

5 One day, Jesus was standing on the shore of Lake Gennesaret.[a] A crowd was pushing to get near to him. They were listening to him. He was speaking God's message to them.

2 Jesus saw two fishing boats at the edge of the lake. The fishermen had left the boats there and they were now washing their nets.[b]

3 One of the boats belonged to Simon. Jesus climbed into it. He asked Simon to push it away from the shore. Jesus sat in the boat and he started to teach the people.[c]

4 When Jesus had finished teaching, he said to Simon, ‘Now take the boat out into deep water. Then put the nets into the water to catch some fish.’

5 Simon replied, ‘Teacher, we worked all last night and we did not catch anything. But because you say it, I will put the nets into the water again.’ 6 So they went in their boats and they put the nets down into the water. When they did that, they caught many fish. There were so many fish that the nets began to break. 7 So they made signs to the fishermen in the other boat. They told the other fishermen to come and help. So the other men came in their boat. They filled both boats with the fish. There were so many fish that the boats began to go down under the water. 8 When Simon saw all the fish, he went down on his knees in front of Jesus. ‘Sir,’ he said, ‘I am a bad man. So please go away from me.’[d]

9 Simon and his friends were very surprised. They were all surprised because they had caught so many fish. 10 Zebedee's sons, James and John, were fishermen who worked with Simon. They were also surprised. Jesus said to Simon, ‘Do not be afraid. You have been catching fish. From now on you will catch people!’[e]

11 After that, they went and they pulled their boats up on the shore. Then they left everything behind and they went with Jesus.

A man with a bad disease of his skin

12 One day, Jesus was in a certain town. A man with a bad disease of the skin was there.[f]

When the man saw Jesus, he threw himself down on the ground in front of him. He said, ‘Sir, you can make me well again if you want to do that. Please do it.’

13 Jesus put out his hand towards the man and he touched him. He said, ‘I do want to help you. Be clean again!’ Immediately, the disease left the man. 14 ‘Do not tell anyone about this,’ Jesus said to him. ‘Instead, go and show yourself to the priest. Take a gift to him for God. Moses taught the people what gift to take to God when they are clean again after this kind of disease. This will show everyone that you are now well again.’

15 After this, more and more people started to hear the news about Jesus. Crowds were coming to hear him teach. Sick people also wanted him to make them well. 16 But Jesus would often go away from the crowd to pray in quiet places.

Jesus helps a man who cannot walk

17 One day, while Jesus was teaching in someone's house, many people were sitting there. Some of them were Pharisees.[g] Other people were teachers of God's Law. They had come from many villages in Galilee, and from Judea and Jerusalem. The power of the Lord was there with Jesus to make sick people well.

18 Then some men arrived. They were carrying a man on a mat. The man could not walk or move his legs. They tried to get into the house because they wanted to bring the man to Jesus. 19 But the house was full of people and they could not get in. So they carried the man onto the flat roof of the house. Then they made a hole in the roof. After that, they put the mat down through the hole. The man was still lying on it. He came down in the middle of the crowd, in front of Jesus. 20 Jesus saw them. He knew that they believed in him. So he said to the sick man, ‘My friend, I forgive you for the wrong things that you have done.’

21 The Pharisees and the teachers of God's Law were there. They heard what Jesus said. So they began to think among themselves, ‘Who is this man? He is speaking as if he is God. Only God can forgive people for the wrong things that they have done.’ 22 Jesus knew what these men were thinking. He told them, ‘You should not be thinking these things. 23 I said to this man, “I forgive you for the wrong things that you have done.” Instead, I could have said to him, “Stand up and walk.” Which one is easier for me to say? 24 But I want you to know this. I, the Son of Man, have authority here on earth.[h] I can forgive people for the wrong things that they have done.’

Then he said to the man who could not walk, ‘I am saying to you, “Stand up. Pick up your mat and go home!” ’

25 Immediately, the man stood up in front of them all. He picked up the mat that he had been lying on. He went home. He was praising God as he went. 26 What had happened surprised everyone. They said, ‘God is great and powerful! We have seen very strange and special things happen today.’

Jesus asks Levi to come with him

27 After this happened, Jesus went away from that house. He saw a man that took taxes from people. He was working in his office. His name was Levi. Jesus said to him, ‘Come with me and be my disciple.’ 28 So Levi got up and he went with Jesus. He left everything behind.

29 Soon after this, Levi made a large meal for Jesus at his house. Many people also came and they were eating with them there. Some of them took taxes from people, as Levi did. 30 Some Pharisees and teachers of God's Law saw them there. So they said to Jesus' disciples, ‘You eat and drink with these bad people and with men who take taxes from people. That is not right.’

31 Jesus answered them, ‘People who are well do not need a doctor. It is people who are ill that need a doctor. 32 Some people think that they always obey God. I have not come to help people like that. Some people know that they have done wrong things. I am asking those people to come to me for help. I want them to change how they live.’

33 Then the Jewish leaders said to Jesus: ‘The disciples of John the Baptist often choose to fast for a time. Then they can pray to God a lot. The disciples of the Pharisees also do that. But your disciples never do that. They continue to eat and drink every day.’[i]

34 Jesus answered them, ‘When a man marries a wife, you cannot stop his friends from eating. They will continue to eat while he is with them. 35 But there will be a time when people take that man away from his friends. Then they will decide to fast.’[j]

36 Jesus told them this story: ‘Nobody tears a piece of cloth from a new coat to mend an old coat. If he does that, he will have torn the new coat. Also, the piece of cloth from the new coat will not look the same as the old coat.[k]

37 And nobody pours new wine into old wineskins.[l] If he does that, the new wine will tear the old wineskins. He will lose the wine and the wineskins will also spoil. 38 Instead, you must put new wine into new wineskins.

39 Also, nobody wants to drink new wine after he has drunk old wine. He will say, “The old wine is much better.” ’[m]

  1. 5:1 ‘Lake Gennesaret’ is another name for the ‘Sea of Galilee’. Capernaum is a town on the shore of this lake.
  2. 5:2 A fisherman is someone who catches fish. Many of Jesus' disciples were fishermen. They included Simon Peter, Andrew, James and John. The fishermen caught fish from the lake with nets.
  3. 5:3 The boat was a good place for Jesus to sit. The people on the shore could see him and hear him.
  4. 5:8 Simon saw all the fish. Then he knew that God was with Jesus. He knew that he was not good enough to be Jesus' friend.
  5. 5:10 Jesus wanted to teach Simon, James and John about ‘catching men’. They would learn how to tell people the good news about Jesus. They had brought fish out of the water. Now they would bring people to Jesus, so that they could believe in him.
  6. 5:12 People with this bad disease of the skin could not live near to other people. They lived outside the town.
  7. 5:17 The Pharisees were a group of Jews. Many of them thought that they were obeying all God's rules. But they were also obeying many of their own rules. They did not like the things that Jesus taught. They did not like him because he did not obey all their own rules.
  8. 5:24 Jesus often spoke about himself as the Son of Man. He used this to cause people to think about some messages in the Old Testament. See Daniel 7:13-14.
  9. 5:33 John the Baptist and the Pharisees taught the people rules about prayer. They taught them to fast sometimes, so that they would have time to pray.
  10. 5:35 Jesus is teaching that his disciples will be happy while he is still with them. But he will not always be with them. Then they will be sad and they may choose to fast.
  11. 5:36 Men were teaching people about the rules that God gave to them. In this picture story the old cloth is what these men taught. The new cloth is what Jesus was teaching. God gave his rules to his people by Moses. Those that taught these rules often taught their own ideas instead. This was why Jesus so often spoke against them. He also spoke against what they taught.
  12. 5:37 Wine grows bigger while it is getting older. But old wineskins become hard. New wine would cause them to break as it gets older.
  13. 5:39 Jesus is teaching that the old rules are like old wineskins. What he is teaching is new. It needs a new wineskin.

Jesus Calls His First Disciples(A)

5 One day as Jesus was standing by the Lake of Gennesaret,[a] the people were crowding around him and listening to the word of God.(B) 2 He saw at the water’s edge two boats, left there by the fishermen, who were washing their nets. 3 He got into one of the boats, the one belonging to Simon, and asked him to put out a little from shore. Then he sat down and taught the people from the boat.(C)

4 When he had finished speaking, he said to Simon, “Put out into deep water, and let down the nets for a catch.”(D)

5 Simon answered, “Master,(E) we’ve worked hard all night and haven’t caught anything.(F) But because you say so, I will let down the nets.”

6 When they had done so, they caught such a large number of fish that their nets began to break.(G) 7 So they signaled their partners in the other boat to come and help them, and they came and filled both boats so full that they began to sink.

8 When Simon Peter saw this, he fell at Jesus’ knees and said, “Go away from me, Lord; I am a sinful man!”(H) 9 For he and all his companions were astonished at the catch of fish they had taken, 10 and so were James and John, the sons of Zebedee, Simon’s partners.

Then Jesus said to Simon, “Don’t be afraid;(I) from now on you will fish for people.” 11 So they pulled their boats up on shore, left everything and followed him.(J)

Jesus Heals a Man With Leprosy(K)

12 While Jesus was in one of the towns, a man came along who was covered with leprosy.[b](L) When he saw Jesus, he fell with his face to the ground and begged him, “Lord, if you are willing, you can make me clean.”

13 Jesus reached out his hand and touched the man. “I am willing,” he said. “Be clean!” And immediately the leprosy left him.

14 Then Jesus ordered him, “Don’t tell anyone,(M) but go, show yourself to the priest and offer the sacrifices that Moses commanded(N) for your cleansing, as a testimony to them.”

15 Yet the news about him spread all the more,(O) so that crowds of people came to hear him and to be healed of their sicknesses. 16 But Jesus often withdrew to lonely places and prayed.(P)

Jesus Forgives and Heals a Paralyzed Man(Q)

17 One day Jesus was teaching, and Pharisees and teachers of the law(R) were sitting there. They had come from every village of Galilee and from Judea and Jerusalem. And the power of the Lord was with Jesus to heal the sick.(S) 18 Some men came carrying a paralyzed man on a mat and tried to take him into the house to lay him before Jesus. 19 When they could not find a way to do this because of the crowd, they went up on the roof and lowered him on his mat through the tiles into the middle of the crowd, right in front of Jesus.

20 When Jesus saw their faith, he said, “Friend, your sins are forgiven.”(T)

21 The Pharisees and the teachers of the law began thinking to themselves, “Who is this fellow who speaks blasphemy? Who can forgive sins but God alone?”(U)

22 Jesus knew what they were thinking and asked, “Why are you thinking these things in your hearts? 23 Which is easier: to say, ‘Your sins are forgiven,’ or to say, ‘Get up and walk’? 24 But I want you to know that the Son of Man(V) has authority on earth to forgive sins.” So he said to the paralyzed man, “I tell you, get up, take your mat and go home.” 25 Immediately he stood up in front of them, took what he had been lying on and went home praising God. 26 Everyone was amazed and gave praise to God.(W) They were filled with awe and said, “We have seen remarkable things today.”

Jesus Calls Levi and Eats With Sinners(X)

27 After this, Jesus went out and saw a tax collector by the name of Levi sitting at his tax booth. “Follow me,”(Y) Jesus said to him, 28 and Levi got up, left everything and followed him.(Z)

29 Then Levi held a great banquet for Jesus at his house, and a large crowd of tax collectors(AA) and others were eating with them. 30 But the Pharisees and the teachers of the law who belonged to their sect(AB) complained to his disciples, “Why do you eat and drink with tax collectors and sinners?”(AC)

31 Jesus answered them, “It is not the healthy who need a doctor, but the sick. 32 I have not come to call the righteous, but sinners to repentance.”(AD)

Jesus Questioned About Fasting(AE)

33 They said to him, “John’s disciples(AF) often fast and pray, and so do the disciples of the Pharisees, but yours go on eating and drinking.”

34 Jesus answered, “Can you make the friends of the bridegroom(AG) fast while he is with them? 35 But the time will come when the bridegroom will be taken from them;(AH) in those days they will fast.”

36 He told them this parable: “No one tears a piece out of a new garment to patch an old one. Otherwise, they will have torn the new garment, and the patch from the new will not match the old. 37 And no one pours new wine into old wineskins. Otherwise, the new wine will burst the skins; the wine will run out and the wineskins will be ruined. 38 No, new wine must be poured into new wineskins. 39 And no one after drinking old wine wants the new, for they say, ‘The old is better.’”
