5 And it came to pass, that, as the people pressed upon him to hear the word of God, he stood by the lake of Gennesaret,
2 And saw two ships standing by the lake: but the fishermen were gone out of them, and were washing their nets.
3 And he entered into one of the ships, which was Simon's, and prayed him that he would thrust out a little from the land. And he sat down, and taught the people out of the ship.
4 Now when he had left speaking, he said unto Simon, Launch out into the deep, and let down your nets for a draught.
5 And Simon answering said unto him, Master, we have toiled all the night, and have taken nothing: nevertheless at thy word I will let down the net.
6 And when they had this done, they inclosed a great multitude of fishes: and their net brake.
7 And they beckoned unto their partners, which were in the other ship, that they should come and help them. And they came, and filled both the ships, so that they began to sink.
8 When Simon Peter saw it, he fell down at Jesus' knees, saying, Depart from me; for I am a sinful man, O Lord.
9 For he was astonished, and all that were with him, at the draught of the fishes which they had taken:
10 And so was also James, and John, the sons of Zebedee, which were partners with Simon. And Jesus said unto Simon, Fear not; from henceforth thou shalt catch men.
11 And when they had brought their ships to land, they forsook all, and followed him.
12 And it came to pass, when he was in a certain city, behold a man full of leprosy: who seeing Jesus fell on his face, and besought him, saying, Lord, if thou wilt, thou canst make me clean.
13 And he put forth his hand, and touched him, saying, I will: be thou clean. And immediately the leprosy departed from him.
14 And he charged him to tell no man: but go, and shew thyself to the priest, and offer for thy cleansing, according as Moses commanded, for a testimony unto them.
15 But so much the more went there a fame abroad of him: and great multitudes came together to hear, and to be healed by him of their infirmities.
16 And he withdrew himself into the wilderness, and prayed.
17 And it came to pass on a certain day, as he was teaching, that there were Pharisees and doctors of the law sitting by, which were come out of every town of Galilee, and Judaea, and Jerusalem: and the power of the Lord was present to heal them.
18 And, behold, men brought in a bed a man which was taken with a palsy: and they sought means to bring him in, and to lay him before him.
19 And when they could not find by what way they might bring him in because of the multitude, they went upon the housetop, and let him down through the tiling with his couch into the midst before Jesus.
20 And when he saw their faith, he said unto him, Man, thy sins are forgiven thee.
21 And the scribes and the Pharisees began to reason, saying, Who is this which speaketh blasphemies? Who can forgive sins, but God alone?
22 But when Jesus perceived their thoughts, he answering said unto them, What reason ye in your hearts?
23 Whether is easier, to say, Thy sins be forgiven thee; or to say, Rise up and walk?
24 But that ye may know that the Son of man hath power upon earth to forgive sins, (he said unto the sick of the palsy,) I say unto thee, Arise, and take up thy couch, and go into thine house.
25 And immediately he rose up before them, and took up that whereon he lay, and departed to his own house, glorifying God.
26 And they were all amazed, and they glorified God, and were filled with fear, saying, We have seen strange things to day.
27 And after these things he went forth, and saw a publican, named Levi, sitting at the receipt of custom: and he said unto him, Follow me.
28 And he left all, rose up, and followed him.
29 And Levi made him a great feast in his own house: and there was a great company of publicans and of others that sat down with them.
30 But their scribes and Pharisees murmured against his disciples, saying, Why do ye eat and drink with publicans and sinners?
31 And Jesus answering said unto them, They that are whole need not a physician; but they that are sick.
32 I came not to call the righteous, but sinners to repentance.
33 And they said unto him, Why do the disciples of John fast often, and make prayers, and likewise the disciples of the Pharisees; but thine eat and drink?
34 And he said unto them, Can ye make the children of the bridechamber fast, while the bridegroom is with them?
35 But the days will come, when the bridegroom shall be taken away from them, and then shall they fast in those days.
36 And he spake also a parable unto them; No man putteth a piece of a new garment upon an old; if otherwise, then both the new maketh a rent, and the piece that was taken out of the new agreeth not with the old.
37 And no man putteth new wine into old bottles; else the new wine will burst the bottles, and be spilled, and the bottles shall perish.
38 But new wine must be put into new bottles; and both are preserved.
39 No man also having drunk old wine straightway desireth new: for he saith, The old is better.

5 ある日、イエスがゲネサレ湖（ガリラヤ湖）のほとりで教えておられると、群衆が神のことばを聞こうと押し寄せました。 2-3 見ると、水ぎわの二そうの小舟のそばで、漁師たちが網を洗っています。イエスはそのうちの一そうに乗り込んで、持ち主のシモンに少しこぎ出してもらい、舟の中に座ったまま群衆に教えられました。 4 話が終わると、イエスはシモンに言われました。「さあ、もっと沖へこぎ出して、網をおろしてごらんなさい。」 5 「でも先生。私たちは夜通し一生懸命働きましたが、雑魚一匹とれなかったのです。でも、せっかくのおことばですから、もう一度やってみましょう。」 6 するとどうでしょう。今度は網が破れるほどたくさんの魚がとれたのです。 7 あまりに多くて、手がつけられません。大声で助けを求めました。仲間の舟が来ましたが、二そうとも魚でいっぱいになり、今にも沈みそうになりました。 8 シモン・ペテロは、あわててイエスの前にひれ伏し、「先生。どうぞ私みたいな者から離れてください。私は罪深い人間で、とてもおそばには寄れません」と叫びました。 9 あまりの大漁に、ペテロも仲間たちも恐ろしくなったからです。 10 仲間には、ゼベダイの息子のヤコブとヨハネもいました。イエスはシモンに、「こわがることはありません。あなたは今からは人間をとる漁師になるのです」と言われました。
11 岸へ上がると、彼らはすべてを捨てて、イエスに従いました。
病気を治す
12 イエスがある村におられた時のことです。そこに、ツァラアトに全身を冒された男がいました。彼はイエスを見るや、その前にひれ伏し、額を地面にこすりつけて頼みました。「主よ。お願いでございます。どうぞ私の体をもとどおりにしてください。お気持ちひとつで治るのですから。」 13 イエスは手を伸ばして男にさわり、「治してあげましょう。さあ、もう大丈夫です」と言われました。すると驚いたことに、ツァラアトはたちまち消え去り、あとかたもなくなったのです。 14 「このことをだれにも話してはいけません。すぐに祭司のところへ行って、体を調べてもらい、モーセの律法どおりのささげ物をしなさい。そうすれば、治ったことがみんなの前で証明されるのです。」しかし、 15 イエスのうわさはあっという間に広まり、多くの人が、教えを聞こう、病気を治してもらおうと集まって来ました。 16 しかしイエスは、何度も荒野に身を避け、祈っておられました。
17 ある日、イエスが教えておられると、パリサイ人（特におきてを守ることに熱心なユダヤ教の一派）と律法の専門家たちもそばに座っていました〔ガリラヤやユダヤの村々、またエルサレムから来た人たちです〕。イエスには、病気を治す神の力がありました。 18-19 その時、数人の人がやって来ました。見ると、中風（脳出血などによる半身不随、手足のまひ等の症状）の男を、それも床のままかついでいます。彼らは何とか群衆をかき分けてイエスのところへ行こうとしましたが、人が多くて、とても近づけたものではありません。しかたなく彼らは屋根にのぼり、天井に穴をあけ、病人をふとんごと、人々の真ん中に立っておられるイエスの目の前につり降ろしました。 20 イエスはこれほどまでの信仰を見て、病人に、「あなたの罪は赦されました」と宣言なさいました。 21 すると、「なんと罰あたりなことばだ！ いったい自分をだれだと思ってるのか。明らかに神への冒瀆だ！ 罪を赦すことなど、神にしかできないことなのに」と、パリサイ人や律法の専門家たちは、心の中で強く反発しました。 22 それを見抜いたイエスは、「なぜ、わたしのことばが神を汚すことになるのですか。 23-24 この人に、『あなたの罪は赦されました』と言うのと、『起きて歩きなさい』と言うのと、どちらがむずかしいですか。わたしは病気を治す力も、罪を赦す権威も持っているのです。それを証明してみせましょう」と言い、中風の男に、「さあ、起きなさい。床をたたんで、家に帰りなさい」とお命じになりました。 25 男はすぐにはね起き、床をたたむと、並み居る人をしり目に、神を賛美しながら帰って行きました。 26 居合わせた人たちは、みな恐れに満たされて、「不思議だ。まるで考えられないことだ」と幾度もくり返しては、神をほめたたえました。
27 このあと、イエスが町を出ようとされた時、一人の取税人が税金取立所に座っているのが見えました。その男の名はレビ（マタイ）と言いました。「さあ、ついて来て、わたしの弟子になりなさい。」 28 イエスの誘いに、レビは何もかも捨てて立ち上がり、あとに従いました。
29 まもなくレビは、家で、イエスのために盛大な歓迎会を催しました。取税人仲間をはじめ、大ぜいの人が招かれました。
パリサイ人たちの言いがかり
30 ところが、パリサイ人や律法の専門家たちはこの光景を見て、弟子たちに激しい非難をあびせました。「あなたたちは、どうしてこんなくずのような連中といっしょに食事をするのか。」 31 イエスは、お答えになりました。「医者が必要なのは病人で、健康な人ではありません。 32 わたしは、自分を正しいと思う人を招くためではなく、罪人を招いて、罪を悔い改めさせるために来たのです。」 33 彼らも負けてはいません。今度は違った面から、詰め寄りました。「バプテスマのヨハネの弟子たちは、いつも断食して祈っている。パリサイ人の弟子たちも同様だ。なのに、あなたの弟子たちときたら、平気で飲み食いしている。そのわけを聞かせてもらいたい。」 34 イエスは言われました。「幸せな人が断食しますか。結婚披露宴で、花婿の招待客がお腹をすかせたままでいることがあるでしょうか。もちろん、ありえません。 35 しかし、花婿が彼らから引き離される日が来ます。その時こそ断食するのです。」
36 続いて、もう一つのたとえを話されました。「古い着物に継ぎを当てるのに、新しい着物から布切れを切り取る人がいるでしょうか。そんなことをしたら、新しい着物もだめになるし、古い着物も継ぎ目が破れて、結局どちらもだいなしです。 37 また、新しいぶどう酒を古い皮袋に入れる人がいるでしょうか。そんなことをしたら、古い皮袋は新しいぶどう酒の圧力で張り裂け、ぶどう酒もこぼれてしまいます。 38 新しいぶどう酒は、新しい皮袋に入れるものです。 39 こうも言えます。だれでも古いぶどう酒を飲んだあとで、新しいぶどう酒を口にしたいとは思わないでしょう。『古い物は良い』と言われるとおりです。」

Jesus Calls His First Disciples(A)
5 One day as Jesus was standing by the Lake of Gennesaret,[a] the people were crowding around him and listening to the word of God.(B) 2 He saw at the water’s edge two boats, left there by the fishermen, who were washing their nets. 3 He got into one of the boats, the one belonging to Simon, and asked him to put out a little from shore. Then he sat down and taught the people from the boat.(C)
4 When he had finished speaking, he said to Simon, “Put out into deep water, and let down the nets for a catch.”(D)
5 Simon answered, “Master,(E) we’ve worked hard all night and haven’t caught anything.(F) But because you say so, I will let down the nets.”
6 When they had done so, they caught such a large number of fish that their nets began to break.(G) 7 So they signaled their partners in the other boat to come and help them, and they came and filled both boats so full that they began to sink.
8 When Simon Peter saw this, he fell at Jesus’ knees and said, “Go away from me, Lord; I am a sinful man!”(H) 9 For he and all his companions were astonished at the catch of fish they had taken, 10 and so were James and John, the sons of Zebedee, Simon’s partners.
Then Jesus said to Simon, “Don’t be afraid;(I) from now on you will fish for people.” 11 So they pulled their boats up on shore, left everything and followed him.(J)
Jesus Heals a Man With Leprosy(K)
12 While Jesus was in one of the towns, a man came along who was covered with leprosy.[b](L) When he saw Jesus, he fell with his face to the ground and begged him, “Lord, if you are willing, you can make me clean.”
13 Jesus reached out his hand and touched the man. “I am willing,” he said. “Be clean!” And immediately the leprosy left him.
14 Then Jesus ordered him, “Don’t tell anyone,(M) but go, show yourself to the priest and offer the sacrifices that Moses commanded(N) for your cleansing, as a testimony to them.”
15 Yet the news about him spread all the more,(O) so that crowds of people came to hear him and to be healed of their sicknesses. 16 But Jesus often withdrew to lonely places and prayed.(P)
Jesus Forgives and Heals a Paralyzed Man(Q)
17 One day Jesus was teaching, and Pharisees and teachers of the law(R) were sitting there. They had come from every village of Galilee and from Judea and Jerusalem. And the power of the Lord was with Jesus to heal the sick.(S) 18 Some men came carrying a paralyzed man on a mat and tried to take him into the house to lay him before Jesus. 19 When they could not find a way to do this because of the crowd, they went up on the roof and lowered him on his mat through the tiles into the middle of the crowd, right in front of Jesus.
20 When Jesus saw their faith, he said, “Friend, your sins are forgiven.”(T)
21 The Pharisees and the teachers of the law began thinking to themselves, “Who is this fellow who speaks blasphemy? Who can forgive sins but God alone?”(U)
22 Jesus knew what they were thinking and asked, “Why are you thinking these things in your hearts? 23 Which is easier: to say, ‘Your sins are forgiven,’ or to say, ‘Get up and walk’? 24 But I want you to know that the Son of Man(V) has authority on earth to forgive sins.” So he said to the paralyzed man, “I tell you, get up, take your mat and go home.” 25 Immediately he stood up in front of them, took what he had been lying on and went home praising God. 26 Everyone was amazed and gave praise to God.(W) They were filled with awe and said, “We have seen remarkable things today.”
Jesus Calls Levi and Eats With Sinners(X)
27 After this, Jesus went out and saw a tax collector by the name of Levi sitting at his tax booth. “Follow me,”(Y) Jesus said to him, 28 and Levi got up, left everything and followed him.(Z)
29 Then Levi held a great banquet for Jesus at his house, and a large crowd of tax collectors(AA) and others were eating with them. 30 But the Pharisees and the teachers of the law who belonged to their sect(AB) complained to his disciples, “Why do you eat and drink with tax collectors and sinners?”(AC)
31 Jesus answered them, “It is not the healthy who need a doctor, but the sick. 32 I have not come to call the righteous, but sinners to repentance.”(AD)
Jesus Questioned About Fasting(AE)
33 They said to him, “John’s disciples(AF) often fast and pray, and so do the disciples of the Pharisees, but yours go on eating and drinking.”
34 Jesus answered, “Can you make the friends of the bridegroom(AG) fast while he is with them? 35 But the time will come when the bridegroom will be taken from them;(AH) in those days they will fast.”
36 He told them this parable: “No one tears a piece out of a new garment to patch an old one. Otherwise, they will have torn the new garment, and the patch from the new will not match the old. 37 And no one pours new wine into old wineskins. Otherwise, the new wine will burst the skins; the wine will run out and the wineskins will be ruined. 38 No, new wine must be poured into new wineskins. 39 And no one after drinking old wine wants the new, for they say, ‘The old is better.’”
